UNIVERSITY OF MAINE President Paul Ferguson

Paul W. Ferguson became the 19th president of the University of Maine in July 2011.

A Southern California native, President Ferguson is a Whittier College graduate who earned a Ph.D. in pharma-cology and toxicology at the University of California, Davis in 1981. He is an accomplished health scientist with a 30-year record of scholarship as an award-winning professor in the fields of toxicology and public health. President Ferguson rose through the academic ranks, leading research and outreach efforts in four states to assess and reduce potential health risks from chemical exposures. During this time, Dr. Ferguson also worked as a senior toxicologist for Unocal Corporation, a Los Angeles-based international energy resources company.

Since 1993, Dr. Ferguson has progressed through academic administration, initially serving as vice provost and dean of graduate studies and research at the University of Louisiana, Monroe. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he was vice president for research and graduate studies. Prior to joining the University of Maine, Dr. Ferguson was at the Edwardsville campus of Southern Illinois University, where he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

As a campus leader highly regarded for his commitment to engagement, inclusivity and quality, President Ferguson has a demonstrated record of university transformations in the areas of increased research and economic development, university-community partnerships, student success, faculty development and academic quality.

Currently, President Ferguson is leading an inclusive, campus-wide planning and implementation process to elevate the University of Maine to new levels of excellence as the most distinctive 21st-century land-grant university of its kind in the nation.

Director of Athletics Steve Abbott

Steve Abbott was named Director of Athletics at the University of Maine on August 20, 2010. He comes to Maine with a wealth of knowledge of Black Bear athletics. Abbott grew up in Orono and his father, Walt, was a professor, head football coach and athletic administrator at Maine for 50 years.

Formerly an attorney for Pierce Atwood, northern New England’s largest law firm, Abbott served as Chief of Staff for Senator Susan Collins from 1997 through 2009. He was the top advisor to Senator Collins from her first year through her rise to prominence in the Senate, including her Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Com-mittee. Abbott managed her Washington office and her six Maine offices. He supervised a staff of more than fifty and worked extensively with Maine constituents including business, state and academic leaders.

Abbott is a 1985 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in history. He was captain of the Harvard football team in 1984. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. He also studied Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts.

University of Maine President Paul Ferguson has officially released a strategic plan that creates a blueprint for the state’s flagship public university to become one of the most distinctive universities in the country for student achievement and com-munity engagement.

The plan, “The Blue Sky Project: Reaffirming Public Higher Education at Maine’s Flagship University,” was accepted by the University of Maine System trustees at their board meeting in Bangor July 9.

“This plan isn’t just about making the University of Maine a bigger, better and more financially sustainable institution,” says Ferguson. “It also is about reconnect-ing the university to the people of Maine so that we can have a major impact on the future growth and prosperity of our state in the 21st century.”

The plan is centered around investing in UMaine’s existing areas of distinction and launching a number of new initiatives to better align the university’s resources and programs with the needs of the state. It outlines five strategic pathways, sum-marized as the “Five M’s,” and a series of related initiatives and strategies to trans-form UMaine in the next five years:

Maine’s Renewal – Ensure that UMaine teaching, research, outreach, work-force and economic development program excellence are in close alignment with Maine’s priority needs. Initiatives include increasing campus/private sector partner-ships by 50 percent in the next five years, and aligning technology and educational programs with Maine’s economic infrastructure needs.

Money and Management – Optimize operating efficiencies and control ex-penditures within a financially sustainable business model, and seek new and en-trepreneurial revenue sources. Initiatives include a new enrollment management unit and a plan to potentially increase enrollment to 15,000 (from 11,168 in 2012), increasing the number of out-of-state and international students, and increasing academic partnerships with Maine’s community colleges.

Morale and Marketing – Invest in faculty and staff professional develop-ment, refresh the UMaine brand and improve communication among all constitu-encies. Initiatives include establishing consistent and high-quality brand standards to better promote UMaine, harnessing the goodwill of alumni for student intern-ships and career networking, and promoting UMaine’s role in athletics as the state’s only NCAA Division I school.

Mentoring and Modeling – Promote undergraduate and graduate oppor-tunities for student success, including value-added residential life, research fel-lowships, internships, and more effective advising and learning environments. Initiatives include developing new models for learning to better prepare graduates for meaningful jobs and lives, establishing an outcomes-based assessment of all academic programs, and increasing the number of externally funded opportunities for hands-on student research.

Master Plan and Maintenance – Restore and create UMaine’s physical plant and technology infrastructure to ensure a vibrant place of learning and discovery. Initiatives include a Total Cost of Ownership (TOC) approach to managing UMaine’s $1 billion in infrastructure and real estate, fully funding appropriate levels of cam-pus upkeep and beautification, and continuing to implement campus sustainability initiatives.

Ferguson, who came to UMaine in July 2011 and was formally inaugurated as the 19th president this past April, began the “Blue Sky” project shortly after arriv-ing on campus. From November 2011 to April of this year, a 26-member leadership team, made up of faculty, staff, students and alumni, met weekly to develop the plan. More than 30 informational meetings attracted hundreds of participants and more than 250 contributors submitted “blue sky ideas.”

“This has been a comprehensive, inclusive process that has united the entire University community around a renewed sense of pride, purpose and commitment to serving the people of Maine,” Ferguson says. “There is much work to be done, but we see blues skies ahead for this great University and the State of Maine.”

>> TOP-RATE MEDICAL STAFFThe Maine sports medicine team includes six certified athletic trainers and one gradu-ate assistant certified athletic trainer, a team physician, an orthopedic physician, a wide variety of medical specialists and student-athletic trainers. Other specialists on the Maine athletic health care team include an optometrist, a chiropractor and a dentist.

>> MIKE KESSOCK SPORTS MEDICINE CENTERThe Mike Kessock Sports Medicine Center, in Memorial Gymnasium, houses some of the newest technology in the field of sports medicine. This facility provides injury pre-vention, treatment and rehabilitation for student-athletes.

>> SPEED, STRENGTH and CONDITIONINGMaine Speed, Strength and Conditioning is a performance-based program focused on achieving success in athletic events and maintaining an injury-free environment. Phi-losophy: 1. Developing a mentally and physi-cally challenging training environment that will allow athletes to maximize their ability; 2. Increase performance in athletic events; 3. Decrease the risk of injury through the teach-ing of progressive strength and power devel-opment exercises; 4. Identify dysfunctional movement patterns and correct the pattern. Life Skills>> LIFE SKILLSSeminars: Student-athletes work with the life skills coordinator and campus members to design and participate in workshops covering a variety of areas: ca-reer development, team building, alcohol and drug education and nutrition.Multicultural Programs: The University and its Athletic Department have a com-mitment to supporting diversity in the campus community. A liaison relation-ship involving full-time staff members has developed between the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Athletics to promote an appreciation of diversity and to serve the athletes of dif-ferent cultures.Student-Athlete Advisory Commit-tee: Members from each of the intercol-legiate sports teams meet with athletic and academic administrators regularly to help promote efficient communication between the Athletics Department and the student-athlete population.

Community Involvement:Black Bear student-athletes do not just receive tremendous support. They also return

the support to the local community. Events that student-athletes took part in last season included: Martin Luther King Diversity Day, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Opera-tion Christmas Child, Play4Kay, volunteering numerous hours at both the Ronald McDonald House and the Old Town YMCA, Cub Tracks Triathlon, Warms Heads Warm Hearts, Skate with

the Bears, Black Bear Mentors, Skating Strides and many more activities! Maine athletics donates thousands of dollars worth of tickets to nonprofits each year!

The women’s basketball team raised $10,255 for its annual Play4Kay Breast Cancer awareness fundraiser game. Since the $10k goal was met, Coach Barron lived up to his word, having his head shaved.


Historic Achievements>> Maine has celebrated two NCAA championships in men’s ice hock-ey. Maine defeated Lake Superior State, 5-4, to capture the school’s first crown in 1993, and then knocked off New Hampshire, 3-2, to win the school’s second title in 1999.

>> Every year since 1986, at least one Black Bear team or indi-vidual has competed in an NCAA Championship event.

>> The Black Bear baseball team has made seven appear-ances in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

• UMaine has won two NCAA Division I National Championships in men’s ice hockey in addition to 18 NCAA appearances and 11 Frozen Four appearances.

• Alfond Arena recognized as the college hockey rink with the “Best Atmosphere” by the Wall Street Journal (2011).

•Two Hobey Baker Award winners from UMaine (Scott Pellerin and Paul Kariya), rec-ognized as the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player.

•46 former Black Bears play in the NHL. John Tortorella is head coach of the New York Rangers. Garth Snow is general manager of the New York Islanders.

• UMaine baseball has seven College World Series appearances and 16 NCAA regional appearances. Baseball has won seven conference titles, including the 2011 champi-onship.

• UMaine baseball has had seven major league players in addition to coaches Brian Butterfield and Carl “Stump” Merrill.

• UMaine women’s basketball has won 13 conference titles and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. Four All-Americans have combined for 14 All-American honors.

• UMaine football has won 11 conference titles and made six NCAA Tournament appear-ances, including three NCAA Final Eight appearances in the last 10 years. Maine played in the 1965 Tangerine Bowl.

• UMaine football has had 43 players in NFL camps. There are currently eight players listed on NFL rosters. UMaine football has produced 35 All-Americans (2012).

• Three Black Bears have played in the Super Bowl.

• UMaine softball has won three conference titles and made UMaine’s first NCAA appear-ance by a women’s team in 1994.

• Former UMaine men’s basketball player Rick Carlisle led the Dallas Mavericks to a 2011 NBA Championship win, while Jim Boylan is an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers.

• UMaine field hockey received its highest national ranking ever in 2011 when it was ranked 10th in the nation.

• Track and field great Viktoria Rybalko competed in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olym-pics and recently returned to UMaine as an assistant coach.

• UMaine track has garnered three All-America honors in the last two years.


Scott Atherley, Maine’s all-time winningest coach, returns for his 14th season with the Black Bears. He led Maine to a berth in the 2010 America East Title game, the fifth time in school history that the Black Bears have played in the championship game.

Last season, Maine finished 5-9-1 with victories over Charleston Southern, Holy Cross and Rhode Island early in the season. Fresh-men Jordan Pellerin and Camille Varin-Tremblay each earned a spot on the America East All-Rookie Team.

The Black Bears continued to excel in the classroom, leading all America East women’s soccer teams with a 3.42 grade point average. Eighteen student-athletes were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll, with 11 receiving Commissioner’s Honors for obtaining a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

In 2010, Maine finished with a record of 9-9 and a mark of 3-5 in America East play. The Black Bears finished sixth in the America East regular season standings, but became the first team in conference history to win back-to-back road games to earn a berth in the title game. Maine defeated Hartford 1-0 in the quarterfinals, before downing second seeded Stony Brook 3-1 in the semifinals.

Maine lost to Boston University in the championship game, but the run left them hungry for a return in 2011. It was the fifth time that Maine had played in the title game. Hannah Breton, Kaitlyn MacIsaac and Kelsey Wilson all earned a spot on the America East Al-Tournament Team.

Wilson earned a spot on the America East Second Team, while Lisa Bijman was an All-Rookie Team choice. Maine placed four on the America East All-Academic team, including Wilson who was named to the CoSIDA / Capital One All-District Second Team.

Atherley led the Black Bears to a 9-5-3 record, including a 5-2-1 mark in conference play and its seventh straight America East playoff berth in 2009.

The Black Bears’ earned a spot in the America East semifinal game after a 2-1 overtime victory over New Hampshire. It was the sixth time in the last seven years that Maine advanced to at least the semi-finals.

Maine received several honors, including Anjelica Hodgson and Laura Martel being named to the America East All-Championship Team. Mar-tel was also named America East Striker of the Year after scoring 13 goals. Martel and Hodgson were also named first-team All-Conference. Christina Di lesi was named to the second team, while Meagan Price-Leibenzeder was named to the All-Rookie squad. The Black Bears also had 16 players named to the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Atherley led the Black Bears to a 6-6-7 record in 2008, including a 3-3-2 mark in conference play and an America East playoff berth. The

Maine received several honors in 2008, including Jasmine Phillips and Kim Stephenson being named to the America East All-Championship Team, Stephenson and Cristina Di Iesi were being named to the America East Second Team, and Stephenson and Anjelica Hodgson being named to the America East All-Academic Team. In addition, Hodgson was also named to the prestigious ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-Academic District I Team. The Black Bears also had 17 players named to the America East Academic Honor Roll and had a combined GPA of 3.35.

In 2006, the Black Bears finished 14-4-2 on the season and 5-3-0 in America East play. Maine set a school record for wins in a season and competed in its fourth straight America East Title game. Atherley led Maine to its first-ever NSCAA top-25 ranking. In addition, the Black Bears were ranked in the top-6 in the NSCAA Northeast Region Poll every week. Maine allowed just eight goals on the season. The Black Bears never allowed more than one goal in a game and never allowed a goal in the first half of a game. Maine’s 14 wins were tops in America East.

Canuel and Harper were both selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas NCAA Division I Women’s Northeast All-Region Team. Canuel was selected to the First Team, while Harper received Second Team honors. Harper and keeper Jasmine Phillips were each named to the Soccer Buzz Northeast

Region Second Team. In addition, Bouchard, Canuel, Harper and Pekrul were all selected to the America East All-Academic squad. Canuel and Harper were each named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team.

In 2004, The Black Bears earned a share of the 2004 America East regular sea-son title and played in the America East title game for the second year in a row. Marie-Andree Canuel was named America East Rookie of the Year and a freshman All-American, the first in program history. Maine had seven players honored by America East in 2004. The Black Bears earned the NCSAA /adidas Team Academic Award and Emily Stevens and Allison Kelly were both named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. Maine finished fifth in the nation in shutout percentage and eighth in GAA, the highest ranking in school history. The Black Bears also set school records for most shutouts (12), fewest goals allowed (11) and lowest GAA (0.65).

In 2003, Maine advanced to the America East Championship game in its first-ever postseason appearance, and finished in a 0-0 tie with Boston University. The Terriers advanced to the NCAA Tournament via penalty kicks. The Black Bears rewrote the record books after compiling a record of 13-3-3. Atherley led Maine to 13 wins, five more than the previous high set in 1996. Maine also set school records for most shutouts (11), most goals scored (40), fewest goals allowed (13) and fewest losses (3). The Black Bears allowed just 0.65 goals per contest.

Atherley saw three of his players earn America East First Team honors, while two were named to the Second Team. Linda Consolante was a member of the Canadian World Cup Team and earned a silver medal in the Pan Am Games with Team Canada. His squad continued to have success in the classroom as they earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Academic Award for the third year in a row for maintaining at least a 3.0 grade point average. Jen Buckley was named an Academic All-American.

In 2002, the Black Bears were recognized as the top academic women’s soccer team in the America East Conference. The team boasted a 3.31 GPA, while 13 players were named to the America East Honor Roll. In 2000, Atherley’s first with the responsibility for only the women’s program at UMaine after serving as coach of both the men’s and women’s teams in 1999, he recruited a freshman class ranked among the top 50 in the nation by Soccer Buzz online magazine. Among his recruits were the first high school All-American in program history, and four players with Canadian National Team experience. Atherley then proceeded to guide the Black Bears to the

most wins since 1997.

Atherley served as coach of the UMaine men’s soccer team for seven seasons. In 1995, he led the team to 10 wins, the most by the Black Bears since 1990 and five conference wins, the most in school history. His squad received the 1995 NEISL Fair Play Award for sportsmanship.

In 1994, Atherley was named Maine Collegiate Coach of the Year when he led the team to its first conference tournament appearance since 1990, the 1994 Diadora Classic title, and tied the school mark for consecutive wins with six. The Black Bears recorded a 1-0 win over nationally ranked Brown.

A native of Andover, Conn., Atherley was a standout player for the Black Bears during his career. He was a four-year letterwinner at UMaine, serving as team captain his final season where he was selected to the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) All-Star and Maine Collegiate All-State teams.

A 1988 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical edu-cation, Atherley also earned his master’s from UMaine in exercise physiology in 1991. Atherley resides in Bangor, with his wife, Lynn. He has a son, Carson, and two daughters, Teagan and Kyelin.


Linda Hathorn begins her second season as assistant coach with the University of Maine women’s soccer program. Hathorn, a former standout with the Black Bears and Hall of Famer, is a two-time America East Defender of the Year. Hathorn has a wealth ofcoaching and playing experience that will be an asset to the Black Bears.

Prior to coming to the University of Maine, Hathorn was the assistant coach at Valparaiso University in Indiana, and at Regis University in Colorado, and at Northern Arizona University where she assisted the head coach in all aspects of directing the women’s soccer programs. This included team training, recruiting, scouting, travel, summer camps and clinics along with academic monitoring and compliance.

Hathorn began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University from July 2006 through May 2009. In 2007, the team attained its first .500 season in school history. In 2008, the team posted its first winning season in school history, won the Big Sky Conference Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to collegiate coaching experience, Hathorn also has national coaching experience with various Canadian Youth National Team. She is currently the assistant coach for the Under 17 Canadian Women’s National Team. Who recently finished second at the 2012 CONCA-CAF Finals in Guatemala and will be competing at the U17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan. In 2010 she was a member of the staff of the U17 Canadian National Team that won the U17 CONCACAF Finals in Costa Rica. She has also served as a consultant for the Canadian Soccer Association National Teams. She provides technical support and assistance for Dartfish Video Analysis Software within the Canadian Soccer Association.

Hathorn entered the coaching ranks after a stellar playing career. She was on the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team in 2003 and 2004. She played in the Women’s World Cup in 2003. Hathorn also played in the Pan American games. She played for theOttawa Fury W-League from 2003-2006.

As a University of Maine Black Bear, Hathorn had a great career from 2001 through 2005. She was a two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year. She was an All-Rookie team selection in 2001 and earned a spot on the All-Conference team in 2002, 2003 and 2005. She was also an All-Academic selection from 2001 through 2005.

Former Maine men’s soccer head coach and Maine Maritime Athletic Director, Jim Dyer, will be assisting the Maine women’s soccer program for the second straight season. Dyer, who coached current head coach Scott Atherley, will be primarily in-volved with coaching the goalkeepers and assisting coach Atherley at practice and games. Dyer has had an impressive career coaching collegiate soccer for over 25 years, serving as an Assistant Director of Athletics at UMaine for 11 years, and AD at Maine Maritime Academy for seven years before retiring from the post prior to the start of the 2010 season. He also served on a number of committees while he was a head coach including serving as the chair of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Committee. Dyer was also a member of the board of directors for the National Soc-cer Coaches’ Association of America. “I am thrilled that Jim has decided to join our staff, and rejoin the Black Bear community,” said Atherley. “The fact that he will be around to share his knowledge, wisdom, and experiences with our players enriches their experience as members of our program, considerably. Jim has such a positive presence, and his perspective about life, school, and soccer will help our players realize their full potential as citizens, students, and players. Our relationship extends over three decades, and I can honestly say that there are very few people I trust and admire more than Jim.” Dyer was elected into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Starting with the 2007-08 academic year, the confer-ence has seen 25 teams win NCAA games, produced two individual national champions and had 120 student-athletes earn All-America recognition. In the classroom, hundreds of student-athletes have earned national or regional academic honors while America East’s Academic Progress Rate has improved every year since 2004-05 and ranks among the top three conference’s in the country. America East has also sponsored programs aimed at improving its mem-bers’ communities, partnering with Newman’s Own Foundation for the Campus Community Challenge each of the past three years as well as teaming up with College For Every Student on student service projects each of the past two years. Under the leadership of new commissioner Amy Huchthausen, America East is positioned for even more success in the years ahead.

2011-12 was a banner year for America East. Four of the conference’s champions combined for nine NCAA wins, the most ever for the league in a single year. Those nine wins included six by Stony Brook in the NCAA Baseball Championship as the Seawolves became the first America East team to reach the College World Series since the conference started sponsoring the sport in 1990 and ended the year ranked seventh nationally. Additionally, University of Vermont beat Lamar in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, earning the confer-ence’s first NCAA win since 2005 and seventh overall, while Boston University’s women’s soccer team beat Harvard in the first round of the NCAA Championship and finished the season ranked 17th nationally. Boston U.’s softball team became the first America East team to earn a No. 3 seed for the NCAA tournament and beat Iona in NCAA regional play, earning America East’s sixth tournament win since 2007. On top of the NCAA success in team sports, Stony Brook’s Lucy Van Dalen became the conference’s third-ever national champion, winning the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. RPI, Boston University winning the closest Commis-sioner’s Cup race in conference history, finishing just two points ahead of Albany and 30 student-athletes receiving All-America recognition.

Off the field, America East posted the third-highest APR in the country, trailing only the Ivy and Patriot Leagues, and 31 of its teams received NCAA public recognition awards. Additionally, 17 student-athletes received national academic honors. For the third straight year, America East partnered with Newman’s Own Founda-tion to encourage community service among students through the NOF Campus Community Challenge, which awarded over $100,000 in grants to support student groups engaged in philanthropy and commu-nity service in America East communities. America East also partnered with College for Every Student (CFES), a national non-profit that helps underserved kids attend college, on a national service month.

Leadership…

• For the second straight year, America East partnered with Newman’s Own Foundation to encourage commu-nity service among students through the NOF Campus Community Challenge. Nine grants of $7,500 to $25,000 were awarded to honor and support student groups engaged in philanthropy and community service. In total, more than $100,000 was given to America East student groups. Top selections were: University at Albany, The Giving Circle ($25,000) Binghamton University, Boys and Girls Clubs ($15,000) Boston University, Commu-nity Servings, Inc. ($10,000) University of New Hampshire, Girl Scouts ($10,000)

• America East and College for Every Student (CFES), a national non-profit that helps underserved kids at-tend college, held a on April 9. Student-athletes from America East schools partnered with CFES Scholars at participating schools for a community service project, ranging from beautifying school property to collecting food and shoes for charity drives.

• Members of the America East Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), with at least one representative from each of the nine America East schools, volunteered their time to clean up and paint at the Heading Home Family Shelter in Boston as part of “Make a Difference Day.”

• University at Albany women’s lacrosse standout Nikki Branchini was selected the 2011 America East Woman of the Year for a distinguished career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

• Student-athletes who competed in the America East Swimming & Diving Championship and University at Albany’s men’s basketball team were named the 2011 America East Sportsmanship Award winners.

• Five America East institutions are ranked among the top 105 national universities according to the U.S News and World Report America’s Best College Guide and UMBC was recognized as the top “Up-and-Coming” university in the country for the second straight year.
