Annual Report 2007/2008

Page 2: 2007-08 Annual Report

Trace back our footprints . . . thirteen years ago, a child with a life-threatening illness would have nowhere to turn for the care offered at Canuck Place. Today, families from across BC can access a world class program to cope with the greatest challenge any of us could face.

Our founders, including the Vancouver Canucks, and hundreds of donors, supporters and community partners shared the dream of delivering vital, specialized services free of charge to children and families facing very difficult times. We are indebted to them for taking those crucial first steps.

In 2007/08 we received an unprecedented 15,994 gifts from 10,839 donors. This was used to keep Canuck Place a home-like environment where children and families can fully embrace life and make the most of the time they have. These funds have allowed parents many nights of much-needed sleep, helped ease the pain of children suffering from a devastating illness, and provided siblings with special moments to create lasting memories.

Each child and family that has come through our doors has left an imprint behind. But there are still many more that need to be reached – so many steps yet to take.

This year, we completed the first phase of a study that confirmed that Canuck Place is only serving at the most 25% of the children in the province that could benefit from our care.

Based on a regional feasibility review, we have begun work to expand into Kelowna and Victoria. Beginning with counselling support services, we will progress to visiting clinics over the next few years. We will work closely with existing community organizations and regional health authorities as we extend our reach into these regions.

In Vancouver, more nurses were recruited and funding was secured for a new Hospice bed which will open the door to 100 more admissions each year for children in need.

Whether you participated in the Gift of Time Gala, Adventure Challenge, or Radiothon, made a one-time or monthly donation, or volunteered time, you too have left a valuable footprint.

We want to thank our partner the Vancouver Canucks, Canucks for Kids Fund, for their outstanding contribution of over $1.7 million this year. We are grateful to the Aquilini family, the management, coaches, staff and players for their ongoing commitment to Canuck Place as we strive to reach more children across BC.

We want to recognize the BC Government for their financial assistance and for their work with us to refine our funding model to reflect the growing demand for our services. We are pleased to have such a strong partnership with them.

In addition, we want to sincerely thank our community partners who show us such unwavering support. Your belief in us inspires us to provide the highest level of accountability and transparency in putting our donors’ gifts into action.

Just as those first steps were taken over a decade ago with energy, drive and purpose, we are confident that we are moving forward on the right path with equal determination. With your support of our committment to excellence, we embrace the road ahead.

2008 Year in Review

Highlighted are a few of the things your thoughtful support has made possible in the past year. Thank you for keeping Canuck Place available to the children and families in their time of need.

Page 4: 2007-08 Annual Report

The financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008 reflect Canuck Place’s commitment to provide a world class pediatric palliative care system to the children and families of British Columbia and the continued support of our valued stakeholders. During this fiscal year Canuck Place implemented leading edge financial management practices to further enable the organization to deliver high quality accountability reports to the Audit Committee, Board and other stakeholders, including the conversion of the reporting structure to a strategic accountability framework which directly aligns financial reporting and accountability with the organization’s strategic plan.

The tremendous level of ongoing support is reflected in revenues that exceeded $9 million for the first time. Donations from individual and corporate donors amounted to $4.55 million and make up our largest and most diverse revenue source. Of particular note, is $1 million proceeds received from an insurance policy where Canuck Place was named as beneficiary. Canuck Place continues to value and depend on the support of the Vancouver Canucks and the Canucks for Kids Fund, who contributed $1.8 million (20% of revenue). We also thank the Provincial Government for funding of $2.4 million, or 27% of total revenue.

Expenses increased in the 2008 fiscal year as a result of investment in expansion initiatives that will enable us to provide enhanced services to children and families in the Fraser Valley, the BC Interior and on Vancouver Island. The organization undertook feasibility studies for expanding services outside the Greater Vancouver area and conducted an epidemiology study of the pediatric palliative care population in BC. We also invested in gearing up operations to take on the addition of a 9th bed, a 12.5% increase in operational capacity, allowing

up to 100 new admissions each year without any impact on the excellent care or safety of our children and families. The 9th bed opened in April 2008. In addition to operating costs, we invested in a redesigned website which increases our ability to effectively communicate relevant and timely information to families, donors, volunteers, Board members and the general public.

The Statement of Financial Position reflects a healthy and stable net asset position at March 31, 2008. Cash reserves include the organization’s short term operating reserve and surplus investment funds which were transferred to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Foundation in July 2008 ($2.2 million). Our commitment to directing surplus funds into building our endowment will ensure that Canuck Place is not dependant on any single source of funding to be able to continue to provide services indefinitely to the children and families of BC.

Canuck Place continues to strive for excellence and world-class quality in all areas of operations, including business, financial and human resource practices. We believe it is this commitment that enables us to attract and retain top quality staff and be a global leader in pediatric hospice palliative care.
