Our students perform well above national averages on both exams. Table 4 gives a summary of FE performance, and both exams’ results are presented in detail in Chapter X of this report. Table 4. Employment opportunities for our graduates continue to remain strong. The primary difficulty in tracking graduate employment is in reporting - students leave after they graduate and are surprisingly hard to locate! The following table shows estimates of our placement record, with the caveat that we have not been able to query all graduates, so many are placed in the “unknown” category with respect to first employment after graduation. LTAP Montana LTAP’s Activities for 2007-08 LTAP's Mission Statement: To foster a safe, effective and environmentally sound roadway system by improving the skills, knowledge and understanding of local transportation providers and users through training, technical assistance and technology transfer. LTAP partners with Montana Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Rocky Mountain Chapter of APWA, Montana Association of Counties, National Association of County Engineers, League of Cities and Towns, Montana Association of County Road Supervisors, and other transportation entities who share in this mission. Areas of emphasis include Work Zone Safety, Worker Safety, Winter Survival, Winter Maintenance, Equipment Safety, and Roadway Design Safety. Our focus areas include safety, workforce development, infrastructure management, and organizational excellence. LTAP Staff •Steven V. LTAP library materials and workshop handouts provided over 12,000 participants with various printed materials. Almost 3,000 constituents viewed LTAP Library’s safety videos and DVD's. Over fifty percent of LTAP staff's time was devoted to assisting the transportation workforce via phone calls, e-mails, and faxes. Workshops/Training Sessions The variety of participants at LTAP's training sessions included local, state, federal and private individuals. Topics trained included: Finger Safety; Slips, Trips, & Falls, Forklift Operations and Fundamentals; Loader Equipment Safety; Surveying; Winter Safety; Emergency Preparedness; Winter Survival; Work Zone Traffic Control Technician I; Traffic Control Supervisor; Train the Trainer; Sign Vandalism; Preventative Maintenance of Road and Lawsuits; Safety Design; County Road Standards; Gravel Roads; Signing and Liability; Safety Engineering; Finer Points of an Unpaved Road. LTAP provided 15 topics, 46 sessions and trained 1,546 participants. Our Roads Scholar program awarded 23 Level I scholars.

IV. STUDENT CHAPTER AWARDS AND ACTIVITIES We have many active student organizations in the department. These range from student chapters of national professional societies (ASCE, ITE and AGC) to honor societies (Chi Epsilon) to state or local societies (MARLS and BREN Student Club). The following are summaries of the year’s activities for these vital and inspiring groups: AGC 2007-08 AGC activities included: Hot dog sales each Friday noon in Cobleigh Hall to partially fund the Reno competition trip. Attended the MCA Annual Convention in Kalispell, MT where Montana Contractors once again supported student chapter activities with their auction. Traveled to Reno, NV to participate in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) annual estimating competition…this year three teams attended representing commercial; heavy civil; and LEED. Our Heavy Civil team took Region 6 First Place then went on to compete at the National ASC/AGC competition in Las Vegas, NV in March and took second place at the National level. The Montana State University ASCE Student Chapter had a busy year, culminating with a trip to the regional student conference in Portland, Oregon in April 2008. Eight students and three faculty members were hosted by Portland State University, with a focus on the steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions. The steel bridge team competed well, while the chapter did not field a concrete canoe. The trip included fieldtrip stops at the first cable-stayed bridge in the U.S. (in the Tri-Cities, WA) and the Multnomah Falls State Park in Oregon.

The year consisted of much more than the regional conference. The chapter had monthly member meetings, with the fall semester 2007 presentations on LEED, Unique Construction Projects in the Seattle Area, and ITS/Roadway Design. The spring semester 2008 speaker schedule included presentations on the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, the structural engineering firm of KPFF, and the Cody Airport Expansion. The chapter assisted with the Southwest MathCounts contest in February, as well as a gumdrop bridge event in connection with MSU’s Engineerathon in March.

Much effort was put forth to prepare for the 2009 PNW ASCE Student Regional Conference, which MSU will co-host with Carroll College. Kyle Applebury was the recipient of the ASCE Student Chapter Contribution Award for the 2007-2008 school-year. Britney Singh was the winner of the ASCE Senior of the Year Award.

For spring fundraising, the chapter co-sponsored/organized the 2008 Spring Engineering Festival with ITE and BREN Club. The annual event was a large success, with all the proceeds from the festival going

towards student activities, conference registrations and travel. The student chapter is as always very appreciative of the continuous support from the Montana (Professional) Section of ASCE. The BREN club is an organization on campus composed mainly of students pursuing the Bio-Resources Engineering option under the Civil Engineering curriculum, but is open to any student interested in further studies of an environmental nature. The club has monthly meetings with different guest speakers that provide a presentation over dinner. The club performs a public service twice annual clean-up of the Sheep Mountain Fishing Access Site as part of the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks adopt a fishing site program. The BREN club attended the 2007 meeting of the Center for Riverine Science and Stream Re-naturalization in Missoula, Montana. This adventure was a great way for students to witness real-world engineering problems and breakthroughs, outside of a scholastic situation. BREN Club students also maintain the stream gauging equipment on Mandeville Creek, and participate in the Spring Engineering Festival. BREN 2007-08 Officers Faculty Advisors: Joel Cahoon and Otto Stein President: Jessica Potter Vice President: Aaron Johnson Chi Epsilon 2007-08 The Montana State University Chapter of Chi Epsilon has been active in student support this past year. We provide several programs many engineering students find helpful; the prominent programs being Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) review sessions and a weekly tutoring program. The FE Review sessions have been our most successful program. Our chapter examined the FE exam specifications and determined nine general topic areas and five civil specific areas that could be reviewed. Our chapter then contacted various professors within the College of Engineering at Montana State University. These Professors then donated their time to develop and present a review lecture for students planning to take the FE to help them become familiar with the exam topic areas. As detailed in the 2007-2008 MSU-ITE Student Chapter Annual Report, this year’s Officers delivered another full and well-balanced program of promotion, technical presentations, technical projects, field trips, public service and social activities that built upon the successes achieved by MSU-ITE in previous years. This year, the MSU-ITE Student Chapter successfully maintained their active involvement in technical projects. In September 2007, the chapter helped the Western Transportation Institute with traffic data collection during the football game event. Data was collected in Bozeman, Montana on two consecutive Saturdays to analyze the effects of football game traffic. Three types of data was collected: travel times for three specific routes in Bozeman, turning movement counts at key intersections, and a questionnaire survey that targeted football game attendees. In October 2007, the Chapter helped Engineering Inc., a local engineering firm, in collecting turning movement counts at residential neighborhoods in Belgrade, Montana. These two data collection activities also helped the chapter to raise some funds. Further, the MSU ITE Chapter organized several technical presentations on campus through inviting guest speakers from the transportation profession from Montana and other states. EXCELLENE IN TEACHING AWARD

The MSU College of Engineering is soliciting nominations for the College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence in teaching as demonstrated through application of new and innovative teaching methods and engagement of students in scholarship. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and is announced at the College’s Annual Awards Ceremony luncheon held in May. Anyone may nominate an individual for this award; an individual may not nominate himself/herself. Criteria: The Award is open to any individual engaged in teaching (including adjunct faculty and instructors). The nomination should be grounded on an extraordinary record of teaching and related scholarly excellence. Examples of teaching activities for consideration include, but are not limited to, the following:

Evidence of lecture or laboratory/recitation activities that promote inquiry and synthesis of information.

Excellent student evaluations (letters or standardized instruments). Positive peer evaluations of teaching excellence/creativity. Outstanding scholarship relative to pedagogy (established through publications of

books, invited lectures, grantsmanship, and/or publication in teaching related journals).

Superior integration of research in instruction. Nomination Guidelines: The required nomination packet should consist of the following materials:

Nomination letter that includes a brief summary (limited to two pages) describing the accomplishments of the nominee relative to the criteria above

One letter of support from any appropriate source (limited to two pages) Current Vita (limited to five pages)

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

The MSU College of Engineering is soliciting nominations for the College of Engineering Classified Employee Award for Excellence, which recognizes exemplary service or contribution to the Department, the College, or to the University. Two recipients will be selected and each will receive a $350 Lump Sum Bonus at the College’s Annual Awards Ceremony luncheon held in May. Anyone may nominate an individual for this award; an individual may not nominate himself/herself. Criteria: All permanent classified staff members are eligible for consideration. According to the MUS Pay Plan, in order to qualify for a Lump Sum Bonus an individual must have demonstrated exceptional performance in all of the following areas:

Effort ~ The effort of work greatly exceeds expectations. Consistency ~ The individual must maintain a consistent level of satisfactory or

higher job performance on a recurring basis over a significant period of time. Quality ~ The service, project or product is of the highest quality and greatly

exceeds typical job performance expectations.

In addition, the individual must have demonstrated exceptional performance in one of the following areas: Quantity ~ The amount of work produced clearly exceeds standard expectations

for others. Originality ~ The service, product, or project is exceptionally creative and

innovative. Cost Savings/Revenue Generation ~ The product or service will create a

substantial, documented cost-saving or revenue-generating effort. Efficiency ~ Efficiency of operations is measurably enhanced by the employee’s

work. Life Safety/Safety of Working Conditions ~ Action(s) taken by the employee

results in the prevention of serious property damage and/or physical injury and is outside the scope of the employee’s regularly assigned job duties and responsibilities.

2007-2008 Senior Exit Interview Summary

Senior exit interviews occurred on two occasions during the year. Civil Engineering students in the CE458 capstone course were interviewed in December of 2007 and May of 2008. The interviews were conducted by the department head and emphasized the total four year experience. During the interview, students were first asked to introduce themselves, and then tell where they were from and where they were going after graduation. A summary of where the graduating students were going is included the table below.
