Game PreviewLiberty looks to record its first victory of the season and the RitchieMcKay era Tuesday night when it hosts Coker. Tip is set for 7 p.m.,inside the Vines Center. The game will mark the first home game of theseason for the Flames, who played three games over the weekend inCalifornia, as part of Fresno State’s World Vision Classic.
Tuesday’s contest will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL88.3 FM) with Jerry Edwards providing play-by-play. Liberty UpdateLiberty returns home after dropping three games at Fresno State’s WorldVision Classic. The Flames battled tournament champion, San DiegoState tough on Friday night, falling 62-50. Liberty was pitted against hostFresno State on Saturday, losing 71-62. On Sunday, Liberty went upagainst West Coast Conference foe Portland, losing 73-62.
Alex McLean was named to the all-tournament team for his accomplish-ments. McLean averaged a double-double (11.7 points and 10.3rebounds) over the three games.
Rell Porter equaled a career best 14 points on Friday versus San Diego State.
B.J. Jenkins equaled his career high16 points on Saturday versus
Fresno State.TeeJay Bannister set a
career high with 17 points on Sundayversus Portland. Bannister’s previous
best was 15 points, which heaccomplished twice while at Virginia.
Bannister scored 15 against WakeForest and Georgia Tech.
HEAD COACH RITCHIE McKAY
Ritchie McKay was namedthe seventh men’s basket-ball head coach on March26, 2007.Liberty marks McKay’s fifth
head coaching stint, and hisfirst east of the Mississippi,after stops in the Big Sky,
Mountain West, Pac-10 and WAC confer-ences. McKay, 42, comes to Liberty from New
Mexico, where he spent five seasons at thehelm of the Lobos’ basketball program(2003-07), highlighted by a Mountain WestConference (MWC) championship in 2005.With a 26-7 record, the conference champi-onship earned New Mexico its first NCAATournament appearance in six years andthe program’s first conference title since1996. Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an
82-69 coaching record over five seasons,including the 2005 campaign, where theteam’s 26 victories were the second-high-est total in program’s 103-year history. McKay posted a 37-23 record (.627) at
Colorado State, which included a 1999National Invitational Tournament (NIT)berth. The Rams defeated Mississippi Stateand in-state rival Colorado at the event,before losing to eventual NIT Tournamentchampion California. The 1999-2000 season featured the first
year of play for CSU in the Mountain WestConference, and the Rams logged an 18-12 record and a fourth-place conferencefinish. A pair of victories over nationally-rankedopponents - the first time the program hadaccomplished the feat at Colorado State ina decade - and capturing the title at thesecond annual Pearl Harbor Classic inHawaii were some of the highlights duringthe season. College Hoops Insider maga-zine noticed the success of the 2000 Ramsand tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach ofthe Year. Before arriving on the Colorado State cam-
pus, McKay began his head coachingcareer when he was named the headcoach at Portland State. McKay started withthe Vikings in 1995, helping revive a pro-gram which had been dormant for 15years. McKay led the program to nine victo-ries in the school's first season of competi-tion (1996-97) since the early 1980s. After the initial season at Portland State,McKay was named one of six finalists forthe Clair Bee Award, given annually to thecoach with the most influence and innova-tion in the game of basketball. Two otherfinalists for the honor that year were DeanSmith of North Carolina and MikeKrzyzewski of Duke. The 1997-98 PortlandState team followed with a 15-12 mark anda third-place finish in the Big SkyConference.

Midnight TravelersThe Flames’ flight out of Fresno on Sunday night was canceled. The trav-el party broke up into three groups in order to return to Lynchburg. Thetravel party went their sperate ways once getting to Las Vegas at 11:30p.m., local time. One group boarded a plane for Baltimore, one toCharlotte and one group spent the night in Las Vegas. The Baltimoregroup landed at 7 a.m., on Monday morning and bused to Lynchburg.Assistant coach Dale Layer was the only member of the Charlotte group,because his car was at the Charlotte airport. The group that spentSunday night in Las Vegas arrived in Lynchburg at 5:30 p.m., on Mondayevening.
Flames Facing New Foes This YearLiberty's season opener against San Diego State was the first game offour this season versus an opponent that Liberty had never previouslyfaced. In addition to the Aztecs, Liberty’s non-conference schedule pitsthe Flames up against Portland, Coker and Nyack, all first-time Libertyopponents on the hardwood.

Liberty Versus Schools From CaliforniaLiberty’s contests against San Diego State and Fresno State marks thesixth and seventh time the Flames have faced a school from theSunshine State. Playing Sweet MusicSenior Alex McLean did not play basketball in high school. Standingonly at 6-2 as a high school senior, the Bay Shore, N.Y., native playedbass, piano and drums in the school band. McLean is a concert bassistwho turned down the opportunity to study music at numerous schoolson scholarship, including Cal-Berkley and Hofstra, as well as, receivinginterest from Julliard, in favor of basketball.
Anthony Smith Chosen to Honor a VisionaryJunior Anthony Smith was one of 10 student-athletes who served as anhonorary pallbearer for the late Liberty University Founder andChancellor, Dr. Jerry Falwell. Ten Liberty University student-athletesserved as honorable pallbearers at the May 22 funeral, reflecting on Dr.Falwell’s love for athletics.
Road WoesThe Flames have lost 26 of their last 29 road games, dating back to thestart of the 2005-06 season. The three wins during that span all camelast season. Liberty lost its seventh-straight seasonopener as San Diego State got hot at theright time to defeat the Flames, 62-50, onthe opening evening of Fresno State’sWorld Vision Classic, at the World VisionClassic. The contest started out as a defen-sive juggernaut. San Diego staked them-selves to a 7-4 lead on a three-point basketby Tim Shelton at the 16:31 mark. Neitherteam added to its point total over the nexttwo minutes until Rell Porter hit the first endof two free throws for the Flames, cuttingthe lead to 7-5 at 14:43. Billy White hit ajumper on the next possession to push thelead to 9-5 for the Aztecs. Once again, nei-ther squad could find the basket until the9:48 mark when Anthony Smith hit a three-point bucket, cutting the lead to 9-8 with9:48 left in the opening period.Smith thenstole the ball from Kyle Spain, which led toTeeJay Bannister dishing an assist toPorter to give Liberty its first lead of thegame, 10-9, with 8:55 remaining. SanDiego State bounced back with six-straightpoints, with the run being capped by a BillyWhite dunk to take a 15-10 lead with 5:59remaining. Liberty cut the lead back to twopoints, 15-13, on a Kyle Ohman three-pointbasket on the very next position. TheAztecs then made a push near the end ofthe half, taking a 10-point advantage, 27-17, courtesy of a 12-4 spurt, finished by athree-point bucket by Lorrenzo Wade with45 seconds left in the first half. FresnoState got hot to start the second half, goingon a 14-3 run capped by a Ryan Amorosojumper, extending its lead to 43-22, with12:50 remaining. The Aztecs and theFlames went back and forth for the remain-der of the game, concluding with a Liberty6-0 run to finish the game, 62-50. TheFlames were led by Porter who tied acareer-best with 14 points. Smith assistedwith 11 points, while Bannister chipped inseven points in the losing cause. AlexMcLean led all rebounders with seven car-oms.

Liberty kept the game close throughout, butwas never able to completely overcomehomestanding Fresno State, falling to theBulldogs, 71-62, at the Save Mart Centeron the second day of the World VisionClassic. Liberty started the evening hot, asthey jumped out to a seven-point advan-tage, 15-8, courtesy of an Alex McLeanbucket at the 10:36 mark. Fresno Stateregained the lead, 16-15, after a HectorHernandez bucket off a Kevin Bell passwith 6:53 remaining, capping a 7-0 run. TheBulldogs extended their narrow lead to fourpoints, 21-17, after a Bryan Harvey three-point basket with 5:43 remaining. Libertypulled back within one point after anAnthony Smith jumper and a Rell Porterbucket at the 3:25 mark, cutting the lead,22-21. Fresno State exploded and endedthe half on an 8-2 run, including two three-point baskets by Eddie Miller, going into theintermission with a 30-23 lead. FresnoState came out of the break and extendedits lead to 12, courtesy of a Dwight O’Neillay-up with 17:25 left in the contest, givingthe Bulldogs the 37-25 advantage. Libertycontinued to keep the game close, cuttingthe lead back down to five, 55-50, in frontof the home standing crowd, when B.J.Jenkins hit the front end of a two-shot freethrow. The made shot from the charity stripcapped an 8-2 run with 3:44 remaining inthe game. Fresno State bounced rightback, thanks in part to the free throw shoot-ing of Bell and Harvey. The duo went 11-of-12 from the line to close out the game on16-7 run, giving Fresno Stats the 71-62win. Smith led the Flames with 17 points on7-of-14 shooting, and Jenkins added 16points and a team-high four assists.McLean collected his first double-double ofthe season and 13th of his career, scoring10 points and grabbing a game-high 14rebounds.

Liberty fell in its final game of FresnoState’s World Vision Classic to the PortlandPilots, 73-62, inside the Save Mart Center. In a closely play first half, the Pilots heldthe advantage on the scoreboard themajority of the period. The Pilots drew firstblood, taking a quick 4-0 lead after a LukeSikma jumper at 17:47. After pushing theled to 8-4 at the 16:18 mark on anotherSikma basket, Liberty tied the game, 8-8,for the first time since the opening tip-off,when TeeJay Bannister scored coming outof the first media timeout, with 15:17remaining in the opening stanza. After aturnover by Portland’s Kramer Knutson,guard Anthony Smith gave Liberty its firstlead of the contest with a driving lay-up at14:35, for a 10-8 Flames’ advantage. ThePilots came roaring back with a 12-3 run, totake a 20-13 lead, capped by a wide-openthree-point bucket by Nik Raivio at 11:01. The Flames fought back on the heels of a13-5 run, cutting the lead to 32-31 with 3:12remaining. Two Robin Smeulders’ freethrows with 35 seconds left sent the Pilotsinto intermission with a 34-31 advantage. Sloppy play by the Flames, including threeturnovers, helped the Pilots extend its leadto nine points, 53-44, with 10:58 remaining.Portland later extended its lead to 63-50 ona three-point bucket by Jared Stohl, with7:58 remaining. Liberty was able to trim thePilot lead back to nine points, 66-57, on aSmith layup with 2:32 remaining. It was asclose as the Flames would get in the con-test’s closing minutes, as Portland closedout the game with a double-digit victory, 73-62. McLean led the Flames by collectinghis second-straight double-double with 19points and 10 rebounds.
