Many hours of diligent work by consultants, board members, and the staff resulted in a solid road map thatwe are all very proud of and confident will guide us well into the next decade.

Established in 1966, Fresno Regional Foundation is a nonprofitcommunity foundation serving California’s Central San JoaquinValley. We work to improve lives in our community by encouragingphilanthropy. Mrs. Evelyn Ducoff opened an endowed Donor Advised Fund with the intention of recommending grants to the Chawanakee

Unified School District in Madera County to support art and education programs. After her husband, George Ducoff, passed

away, Mrs. Ducoff wanted to leave a permanent legacy in both their names that benefited the community they deeply love.

Working with her accountant, she found that making a gift to the

tax savings, but also allow her to enjoy being actively involved in

making grants to support art and education in the Chawanakee

Bob Mathias lived anextraordinary and fulfillinglife that has inspired manyto persevere against greatodds. In 1948, at theyoung age of 17, Mathiasmade a name for himselfwinning the Olympicdecathlon gold medal inLondon, England. In 1952,

at the Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, he repeated his victoryand set an Olympic and world record.Among many other great achievements Mathias servedfour years in the U.S. House of Representatives, wasawarded the Theodore Roosevelt Award, graduated fromStanford with a B.A. in Education, and starred in fourmajor motion pictures.Mathias grew up in the Central Valley and is a graduate ofTulare High School.On September 2, 2006, Bob Mathias passed away in hishome in Fresno, CA.In memory of Bob Mathias, his family and friends haveestablished the Bob Mathias Scholarship Fund at theFresno Regional Foundation.

The James Irvine Foundation, a private foundation with assets of $1.8 billion,

has been a longtime partner for the Fresno Regional Foundation, most

recently investing more than $1 million to strengthen the community founda-

tion to serve the San Joaquin Valley region more effectively.

The Fresno Regional Foundation is one of nine small community foundations

across the state which received substantial Irvine grants to support their

operations and growth as part of Irvine’s Community Foundations Initiative II.

The Fresno Regional

Foundation received a

nearly $600,000 grant in

2005, and was awarded

another three-year

$600,000 grant in June

2008 as part of the second

phase of the initiative.

With Irvine support for core

operations, capacity building

and regranting, the Fresno

Regional Foundation has

focused on growing its assets,

enhancing its visibility and

reputation in the community,

and building a high-quality

grantmaking program.

Some of the results:

■ Assets have more than doubled in the last three years

■ The community foundation has grown at an annual rate of 37% (compared to 14% for similar US community foundations)

■ Grants awarded to local organizations have increased 4% to $4.1 million in 2007

■ Nearly 90% of grants were awarded to organizations in the San Joaquin Valley

THE WILLIAM AND FLORA HEWLETTFOUNDATION

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, a private

foundation with assets of $8.9 billion, awarded a grant

to the Fresno Regional Foundation in 2007 of $1.4

million over three years to tackle two pressing issues in

the Central San Joaquin Valley; teen pregnancy and

air quality. The grant will also support organizational

development of Fresno Regional Foundation. Over

three years, the Fresno Regional Foundation will

disperse the bulk of this grant to local non-profit

organizations committed to reducing teen pregnancy

and improving air quality throughout the central San

Joaquin Valley’s urban and rural communities. These

funds will be awarded to local agencies through a

competitive application process which was publicized in

early 2008.

As part of the Hewlett Foundation’scommitment to serving disad-

vantaged communities in the SanFrancisco Bay Area and the CentralValley, we are pleased to supportFresno Regional Foundation. We lookforward to working with our colleaguesin Fresno to have a positive impacton the region,” said Paul Brest,President of the Hewlett Foundation.
