Over 300 participants took the time to share their opinions on kosher establishments in the second annual Baltimore Area Kosher Community Survey – a 50% increase over last year’s participation. Baltimore’s kosher consumers are interested in making themselves heard and Kosher Community Surveys helps them do so. This year’s survey provides a foundation for some expected changes in the area’s kosher market this year, including new ownership at the Brasserie (now Amanda’s), the opening of a kosher Subway, the opening of a Dougie’s Express, and the closing of Liebes Deli. We encourage you to congratulate the winners of this year’s survey (shown on pages 2-4) as well as give words of encouragement to the other establishments that serve the community. Kosher Community Surveys looks forward to next year’s survey! Happy (Kosher) Eating, Neil Rosenbaum

Best of Kosher Baltimore Category Winners

Notes on the Awards:

In order to qualify for winning recognition, an establishment must have received at least 75 evaluations. For the category winners, the top establishments were determined by adding together the percentage of customers who ranked the establishment “good” or “excellent” in the each category. For the overall winners, the good and excellent percentages of all the categories were totaled together. In the Bakeries category, because Krispy Kreme has a very limited product selection (i.e., only donuts), it was deemed ineligible to receive an award.

Shlomo's Kosher Meat Market Poor Fair Good V.Good Excellent

Number of respondents for this store: 94 Summary of Comments: Customers appreciate that Shlomo’s carries both fish and meat products (of good quality, too). The establishment’s staff is seen as friendly and relatively helpful. Shlomo’s delivery service is seen as a definite plus. Apparently, delivery allows customers to avoid the store itself which survey participants report as dirty and where service is slow (e.g., orders are not ready on time).

Price 11% 22% 32% 26% 7%

Number of respondents for this store: 264 Summary of Comments: Strengths of Seven Mile Market include its ability to offer one-stop kosher shopping; providing a good selection of products; and carrying some unique items not sold in other stores. A major area in need of improvement is customer service. One aspect mentioned many times by customers is the attitude and unfriendliness of cashiers. Customers also suggest more effort be put into cleaning the store and into considering a new store layout that would be less cramped. Finally, patrons request more attention to removing dated items still on the shelves.

Wasserman & Lemberger Poor Fair Good V.Good Excellent

Service quality 1% 4% 11% 39% 46%

Environment (Cleanliness/layout) 3% 7% 27% 36% 27%

Price 4% 9% 31% 42% 14%

Number of respondents for this store: 158 Summary of Comments: A number of survey respondents labeled this store as the “best in Baltimore.” Written comments focus on two strengths: service and meat. The quality of customer service is mentioned a number of times. In particular, patrons describe the staff as helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The quality of the meat is characterized as very good (albeit on the expensive side). Even with good service, it appears that one cannot avoid long lines – customers recommend calling ahead with your order, even then expect to wait.

Number of respondents for this store: 203 Summary of Comments: Overall, customers appear to enjoy their experience at Accents. Written comments include good remarks about menu selection, quality of food, and service. Regarding service, the quality appears to vary: many people said good, while others noted OK, and others had negative experiences. Customers focus on one particular negative aspect of this establishment – the system for ordering and waiting for food. Customer flow feels disorganized and unmanaged. Patrons are not allowed to order deli on the “main line” at certain times. Take out and sit-down have the same counter and therefore the same wait. Having wait staff take orders from seated customers would be an improvement. Speed of service could be improved as well.

David Chu's China Bistro Poor Fair Good V.Good Excellent

Number of respondents for this store: 235 Summary of Comments: Overall, written comments praised the restaurant’s food and service. Phrases used by customers were “Best in Baltimore,” “great food,” and “professionally run.” People actually enjoy eating at the restaurant – because of the pleasant décor and environment. At the same time, some customers feel the surroundings are too crowded at times. The restaurant has some service hiccups: some people have negative experiences with wait staff, particularly regarding feeling rushed to finish a meal. While David Chu’s quantitative scores and written comments were overwhelmingly positive, there is a significant minority of people who feel that the restaurant has headed in negative direction under new management.

Number of respondents for this store: 142 Summary of Comments: Baltimore consumers very much appreciate the pleasant environment of the Eden Café, particularly the nice space. The food is described as generally good, albeit on the expensive side. One main critique of this establishment is the speed of service. People feel that there is not enough staff either on front end or in the kitchen. Customers have to wait long time to give orders and get food cooked. Another area for improvement is the limited selection of food.

Value 3% 5% 35% 40% 17%

Number of respondents for this store: 180 Summary of Comments: Given that this establishment has the word “bagel” in its name, it is fortunate that customers consistently give this baked goods provider’s bagels very good remarks. Some of the sandwiches received positive marks written comments as well. With a brand new location this year, Goldberg’s Bagels may remedy many common deficiencies noted by its customers, including not enough space, lines not being well organized, and insufficient cleanliness. Customers also have observed that not all staff is properly trained in efficient, attentive customer service. Service can be slow and one particular staff member appears to make inappropriate remarks to customers. Finally, consumers also request that Goldberg’s consider staying open more hours.

Some consider this place to have the “best subs in town.” Shabbat take-out is highly recommended. Customers remarked that the Knish Shop has good customer service with a friendly, positive approach. While the establishment is considered to have fair prices for many items, some dishes are seen as too expensive.

Number of respondents for this store: 179 Summary of Comments: In their written comments, customers of this establishment recommended the schwarma as well as noting that KosherBite has a good selection of wines. Some patrons have noted that the restaurant has been redecorated somewhat. At the same time, consumers have a number of suggestions for improvement. First, a more concerted effort to keep the establishment clean would be appreciated -- tables are not always cleaned, the floor is often not swept, bathrooms are not clean, and the back entrance is also quite dirty. Second, counter staff is generally not viewed positively – they are seen to offer slow service and have a negative attitude toward customers. Customers recommend to other kosher consumers to use available coupons to make the cost of the food more reasonable.
