In six seasons at LSU, Yvette Girouard’s effect on the Tiger

softball program has been powerful. With each year, she contin-

ues to add to her legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the his-

tory of women's softball by helping LSU maintain its place among

the nation's elite in the collegiate ranks.

Girouard, who was inducted into the Louisiana Softball

Coaches Association Hall of Fame in June 2002 and the National

Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December 2005,

ranks fifth among the career leaders in NCAA Division I wins and

fourth in winning percentage; and fifth among the active NCAA

Division I coaching leaders in wins and third in winning percent-

age.

With 25-straight winning seasons to her credit, she has guid-

ed her athletes to 37 All-America honors, including nine while at

LSU, 15 Academic All-America honors and taken her teams to 15

NCAA Regionals.

No stranger to Oklahoma City, Girouard became just the third

coach in NCAA history to take two programs to the Women’s

College World Series after leading ULL to three WCWS appear-

ances in the 1990s and LSU in 2001 and 2004.

While her influence has been a catalyst for the growth of the

game in the state and nationally for many years, her impact in just

five years in Baton Rouge has been no less significant. Becoming

the first coach in Southeastern Conference history to lead a team

to back-to-back tournament championships, Girouard made a

clean sweep of the three major league titles (SEC Western

Division, SEC Championship, SEC Tournament Championship) in

three of her first four seasons as a Tiger.

HEALTH OF THE TIGERSJunior second baseman Shannon Stein broke the pinkie on her left (glove) hand last week and underwent successful sur-

gery on Thursday, March 1 to place a pin in it to speed the healing. Junior third baseman Tayl’r Hollis broke a finger in herleft (glove) hand on a play at the plate against Louisiana Tech on Feb. 23 in the Easton Purple & Gold Challenge. Freshmanthird baseman Lindsey Hope broke a finger on her right (throwing) hand in practice the week before the Houston CrownePlaza Invitational.

PLAYING AROUNDWith all the injuries in the infield for the Tigers this season, several players have had to make some adjustments to their

normal positions. With the loss of both Tayl’r Hollis and Lindsey Hope to broken fingers at third base, utility player ErikaSluss spent several games at the hot corner in relief. Sluss has now played in a total of 17 games at third base in her career, including six as a freshman and 11 as a junior, while spending eight games at second and 10 games in the outfield in her career. When she came down with a leg infection, that forced starting left fielder Rachel Mitchell to make the move to third base, aposition she had never previously played. With Mitchell’s position in left field open, Jazz Jackson stepped into that role. Slusshas since been able to return to third.

With the loss of Shannon Stein at second and the shift of Sluss to third, starting first baseman Vanessa Soto made themove to second base, where she had played the previous two seasons. That left a vacancy at first base, which was filled bycatcher Kristen Hobbs. It marks the second foray into the field for Hobbs, who played third base in two games against OleMiss in 2004 after Julie Wiese was injured.

WALK IT OUT!Against Missouri State on Feb. 16, freshman Rachel Mitchell broke the LSU single-game record for walks with four. The

left fielder recorded her first walk on six pitches, taking the full count to the limit, in the first inning. Her second walk camecourtesy of a four-pitch at-bat in inning two. Her third at-bat was by far the longest as she went from 1-2 before earning thewalk in the third inning. In the process, it took nine pitches to reach base. The record walk came in the fifth inning as Mitchellagain took a full count for a walk, using six pitches to reach for the fourth time. The four walks broke the previous record ofthree, set 19 times, including once by Mitchell against Memphis on Feb. 11.

STREAKING...Dee Dee Henderson currently has the longest hitting streak of the year for the Tigers, with a streak at 11 games. She is

just four games off of the school record for hitting streaks, which is currently held by Leslie Klein and Stephanie Hill fromthe 2004 season. Henderson’s streak began against Louisiana Tech on Feb. 23 and has continued over the course of 15 totalgames (during four of those games, she did not record an at-bat). During her streak, she has gone 16-for-28 (.571) with twowalks, one RBI, 11 stolen bases and 16 runs scored.

Leslie Klein and Jazz Jackson tied for the second longest hitting streak of the year for the Tigers, with a streak at 10games each. Klein’s streak began against Missouri on Feb. 10 and continued until Feb. 23 against Southern Miss. During herstreak, she went 16-for-35 (.457) with five doubles, a triple, two home runs, 11 RBIs, six stolen bases and nine runs scored.Jackson’s streak began against Southern Illinois on Feb. 18 and continued until March 3 against Portland State. During herstreak, she went 19-for-32 (.594) with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and 16 runs scored. In addition, she was 6-for-6 instolen bases with four walks.

IT TAKES A THIEFIn 28 games this season, LSU is fourth in the SEC with 53 stolen bases, which averages out to almost two stolen bases a

game. In addition, the Tigers are 53-for-58, for a .914 percentage. Three Tigers have stolen 10 bases with 10 players havingstolen at least one base. Dee Dee Henderson leads the team with a 16-for-17 mark, while Leslie Klein is 13-of-14 and JazzJackson is 10-for-11.

EYES ON THE TIGERS

2001 • 2006 SEC COACH OF THE YEAR2006 SEC COACH OF THE YEAR • 2002

Junior Killian Roessner earned ASA Women’s Major Fastpitch All-American honors the last two summers while playing with the Stratford Brakettes. Hitting .500 for the summer, Roessner posted seven dou-

bles, four triples and five home runs with a team-best 37 RBIs and 22 runs scored. Sophomore Dani Hofer and former Tiger Lauren Castle were also members of the Brakettes with Roessner last summer

that won the ASA Women’s Major National Championship.

Sophomore Dani Hofer was a guest on ESPN’s “Cold Pizza” on June 8, 2005, where she was presented with the Gatorade National High School Softball Player of the Year award, becoming the first player from

the East Coast to win the prestigious award. Later in the program, she went out onto the street and pitched at a target, without warm-up, that triggered water balloons over the head of ESPN commenta-

tors Dana Jacobsen, Jay Crawford and Woody Paige. She hit the target every time and proceeded to get the entire cast wet.

In the nine-year history of LSU softball, 16-of-18 four-year Tiger letterwinners have gone on to earn their collegiate degrees for a 88.9-percent graduation rate (the two non-graduates completed eligibility

in 2006). In addition, 36-of-37 previous letterwinners, who have reached the NCAA standard of six years for graduation, went on to earn diplomas for a 97.3-percent graduation rate. In addition, three for-

mer LSU softball non-letterwinners went on to earn their degrees, making it 39-of-42 former Tiger players to have earned collegiate diplomas (92.9-percent).

In LSU softball history, the Tigers have run-ruled opponents 127 times and been run-ruled just nine:

- vs. No. 4 South Carolina, 8-0 (6), April 13, 1997

- vs. No. 22 USL, 11-2 (5), April 29, 1997

- vs. No. 4 Washington, 9-0 (5), May 16, 1998

- vs. No. 4 Texas, 8-0 (6), May 16, 2003

- vs. No. 10 Alabama, 13-0 (5), March 26, 2005

- vs. No. 21 Auburn, 8-0 (5), April 24, 2005

- vs. No. 13 Georgia, 11-0 (5), March 18, 2006

- vs. No. 6 Tennessee, 10-1 (5), May 6, 2006
