Religion Is AboutRelationship
By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult MinistriesIn the epic Greek poem by Homer, Odyssey,
Mentor is the male guardian and tutor of Telema-
chus, the son of Odysseus. While Odysseus is away
at Troy fighting a battle, Mentor raises Telemachus
to manhood. Throughout the story, Mentor seems
to be associated with peacekeeping, arbitration, andpreserving community.
While mentoring, discipling, and
coaching mean different things to dif-
ferent people, each can be defined in
terms of relationship with another.
Just as your spiritual life
is defined in terms of your
relationship with God through
Jesus, your spiritual growth is
impacted by your relationship
with others.
Men, you cannot growspiritually in isolation. You
need others to help you along
your spiritual journey. This is
what you will find at the 2008
FFC Mens Retreat!
Of course, there are paved
biking and walking trails,
volleyball, flag football and
paintball, a climbing wall,
ample fishing and other water
activities. Most important,
there will be other men like
you who need a comrade withwhom to grow.
Take advantage of this op-
portunity by registering today
in the foyer!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Wednesday Night MealsLooking for a place to serve at FFC this fall? Join the
Wednesday Night Meals Ministry Team! Many volunteers are
needed to help shop, cook, serve or clean up. This is a great
service opportunity for individuals as well as any small group.
Contact Harr iet Labertew at 276.1980 or Tammy Claiborne at
282.8505 for information.
Beaverdale ParadeSaturday Morning, September 20
Would you like to be a good neighbor to the community
around FFC? We are entering two floats this year, one general
FFC and the other featuring the worship band from The River.
Candy! Candy! Candy!
We need all kinds of wrapped candy tohand out at the parade. Buckets will be set up
for collection this week (and then throughout
the rest of September and October for Fall Fun
Night candy donations).
Day of ParadeWe need people next Saturday to be hosts at our refreshment
table outside, and inside directing visitors to the bathrooms
(8:00AM). We also want about 90 people, of all ages, to walk
alongside the floats handing out candy and flyers promoting FFC
and our current 3-service format (9AM-Noon).
Please call John Porter at the church office with any questions.
Back-2-School Bash BlessedNearly 1000 people were blessed by the Back-2-School Bash
in the Oakridge neighborhood on August 16.
More than 200 volunteers from five Des Moines churches
(First Assembly, Lutheran Church of Hope, New Life Christian
Assembly, Elim Christian Fellowship, and First Federated).
joined together to provide an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and
faith encouragement. Additionally, 218 back packs were given to
Oakridge children preparing to begin the school year. The Back-2-School Bash is part of a larger ministry we
have in the Oakridge neighborhood. From 11:00AM to noon
we host a weekly Saturday ministry at
Oakridge. This is a great opportunity for you to play a part in
the efforts to bring the truth of eternal life through Jesus to this
diverse neighborhood. Volunteers serve once or twice a month
as lesson teacher, helpers, game coordinators, and facilitators
of music and crafts. You can become part of this important
ministry by contacting the Childrens Ministry office (255.2122 |
The Back-2-School Bash and theweekly ministry have established two im-
portant connections. One is the connection
weve made with other Des Moines
churches. These relationships offer
the opportunity to work together with
other believers to multiply the impact
of our ministry in Des Moines.
Additionally, as our relationship
grows with the staff and residents at
Oakridge, we continue to see additional
opportunities to minister to the residents
living there.
Watch for further details of programs
for parents of all these children weve just
blessed.

Establishing Financial MarginAs Pastor Mike mentioned in his message on financialfaithfulness, faithful stewardship of the financial resources
God has entrusted to your care requires establishing financial
margin.
A solid way to equip you to do this is the Good Sense
course. This course will help you determine your current
situation and then establish a budget and goals to help you get
(and keep) your finances in order.
To participate in this Wednesday evening group, begin-
ning September 24, register in the foyer or indicate your
interest on the Care & Communication Card.

the Des Moines metro area to package Meals from the Heartland.
The September 19 event,

in surpassing the 3 million
mark by packaging more than 4
million meals! These meals go
to both international and local
families and children, most of
whom have less than one meal
per day.
This tremendous outpouring
of love is a wonderful and
tangible demonstration of the
love of Jesus being offered to those in need. Congratulations to
all who took the opportunity to give their time, resources, and
effort to this important community effort!

MISSION ONE Reaching others for Jesus ChristVaughn & JenniferClosed Country
This is Day 14 of Ramadan (conveniently this year, it coincides
with the days of September). Are you remembering to pray
for our cousins, the spiritual descendants of Ishmael? We
are meeting in our home each evening, during the evening
prayer time at the mosque, which is 8pm (8am central time
in the US.)
Every day of the year, Muslims pray five times, and the times
are based on the local times of sunrise and sunset. During
Ramadan, they wake up to eat a meal before the first prayer
time. Then they go without food and water until the sunset
prayer time. After they eat and pray at home, they are
expected to go to the mosque for prayers for about an hour.
In the evening, they do extra reading of the Quran. It is a
challenging time, intended to help Muslims identify with the
poor and heighten their spiritually.
Pray for the people here and Muslims around the world to de-
velop a deep hunger and thirst to have their sins completelyforgiven. Pray they will desire to know the full story of Isa
Al Masih, Jesus Christ, who is the perfect and complete
sacrifice for their sins. Pray that Christ will reveal this truth
to their spirits!

Ramadan30 Days Muslim Prayer FocusSeptember 130, 2008
The word Islam simply means submission to God, anda Muslim is one who follows the laws and practices of Islam.
Muslims say Islam has its origins with
Adam, but they revere Mohammed as the
greatest prophet of the religion. Moham-
med is not just a name, but a title which
means The Praised One.
This week pray for Muslims who have
turned to Christ, many face persecution
from government authorities and even
their own families. Here are some ques-
tions that they deal with as new believers.
How can we honor Christ in daily life,
marriage, and raising children in a predominately Muslim soci-ety? What does one do when it is not legal to follow Christ? How
can new believers find a partner and celebrate their marriage as
followers of Christ in the local community? Where and how can
one be buried?
Pray for cultural sensitivity and respect as we interact with
Muslims right here in Des Moines, IA.
Pray for wisdom, creativity, confidence and opportunities for
us to share our faith as we encounter Muslims in our community.

OTHER NEWS
Thank YouThank you to all in our church family who sent cards, visited,
called or prayed for us during the weeks prior to my mothers
Heaven-going when she was in the hospital and hospice, and af-
terward. What a source of comfort and encouragement. A special
thanks to Bill and Clarice Green and Pastor Howie for their many
visits to the hospital. Love in Christ,Eloise Gardner and family
My family and I thank you for your gestures of kindness
during the time of my heart surgery and recovery. Your prayers,
cards, calls, and visits have been a encouragement to all of us.
Gods blessing be yours, Robert Goldman and family
Did You Know? When someone from our congregation passes away, our
church provides a funeral lunch for the family and friends.
This ministry of compassion has been a blessing to many in
our church family and also a wonderful quiet witness to others
outside our church family during their time of loss.
Barb McCargar and Carole Olson coordinate a team of
volunteers for each lunch. These volunteers grocery shop, preparea delicious hot meal, and do the set up and clean up for the lunch.
Others donate salads and desserts to complete the meals. Typi-
cally it takes the participation of 2540 people for each meal.
The Deaconesses who oversee this ministry would like to
thank Barb and Carole as well as the many others who have gra-
ciously contributed their time and talents to this ministry. Thank
you also to Lois Grove for creating beautiful table coverings to
be used for the lunches in Fellowship Hall.
We are currently updating our list of people willing to assist
with funeral lunches, either by helping with the meal at the
church or by donating food. If you would like to be a part of this
important ministry, check the Care and Communication Card.
(Even if youve been on the list for years, please check the box
again.) Our goal is to have such an extensive list that each person
would only be called upon a few times a year.
