2008-09 SEASON OUTLOOKUnder the guidance of new head coach Stephanie Smith and led by

junior All-South Atlantic Conference performer Andi Winney, the 2008-2009 Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball team will look tomake marked improvement on last year’s 3-11 conference record.

Stephanie Smith brought in Christian Papp as her lead assistant.Papp joins the LMU team after spending the past four years coaching atValparaiso University and, most recently, Indiana University.Rounding out Smith’s staff are Tristan McCray, who played at Bethune-Cookman, and Dawn Skelcher, who remains with the program for her eighthseason.

Smith will rely on junior forward Andi Winney this season. Winney, who led the team in scoring and field goal percentage, averaged 14 pointsand 6.7 rebounds per game while leading the conference in field goalpercentage (66 percent). “Andi has really impressed me with her workethic and desire to be a leader to the team,” says Smith. “Herambidexterity is a real advantage for a post player, and our post coachhas called her the best finisher he’s worked with. We’d like to see Andi getto the free throw line more and add to her rebounding stats this year.”

Helping Winney will be returningsophomore guard Stephanie Wagner.Wagner was named to the SAC All-Freshman Team after averaging 9.8 points and shooting 37 percent from the arc.

The Lady Railsplitters will have to replace the scoring and rebounding ofShawna Nichols and Heather Benton and will look to the remainder of the cast tofill the holes. Sure to help is senior guard Kara Harris (11.1 ppg). Harris started25 of the Lady Splitters' 28 games last year and will be looked to not only for herscoring punch, but as a defensive stopper for LMU. Megan Davis (6.7 ppg. 4.5rpg.), a 6-0 forward, also looks to be a key contributor. “Megan provides us lengthwhen defending on the perimeter. She’s a competitor and took 21 charges lastseason. It’s that type of sacrifice that will not only put Megan into a position to playa large number of minutes, but help our team be the best they can be.”

Coach Smith has to be very excited about the prospects for success withinthe conference, as guard Amberly O’Dell will be eligible to begin playing after thefirst semester. O’Dell, a transfer from Division I Central Michigan, is a 5-6 sophomorethat was recruited hard by LMU during high school. “Amberly can knock down thethree and get to the basket, but perhaps her greatest attribute is her naturalconfidence. When she gets a few games under

her belt, she will emerge as a force in the conference.”Last year, the Lady Railsplitters had only eight healthy players at many

practices. This year Smith looks to her team’s depth as a strength. “We’re lookingto push the ball more and associate more excitement with LMU women’s basketball. My teams have always been up-tempo,” says Smith.

Among those having recovered from injury and looking to contribute will bereturning forwards Bonnie DeBusk and Kelly Youhas, as well as guards WhitneyVannoy, Sarah Harrison and Brittney Craney.

Coach Smith brought in several junior college transfers over the summerthat she expects big things from, as well as signing two freshman perimeters thatwill make the team more athletic. “I’m not used to losing!” says Smith. “I expect usto work as hard as any team and to be competitive with the top teams in theconference this year. We’re going to improve on our fundamentals and bringintensity to everything, whether it’s an offensive possession or a defensive stop.As far as team play goes, we want to maximize the number of easy baskets we getin transition. On defense, I’m big on pressure, whether it’s with our half-court man-to-man or pressing full court.”

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

KEY DATES IN SAC HISTORY 1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed

when six schools broke from the North CarolinaIntercollegiate Athletic Conference

1961 – Newberry joins league. Conferencechanges name to Carolinas Intercollegiate AthleticConference (CIAC)

1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed asfootball league with eight schools, called the SAC-8.

1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry 1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference 1996 – Newberry rejoins conference 1998 – Tusculum joins conference 2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference 2007 – Brevard admitted as provisional member

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 32nd yearof athletic tradition and excellence. The conference hasenjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people buildinga premier athletic conference throughout its history.

The distant forerunner of the South AtlanticConference was the North State Intercollegiate AtlanticConference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the“Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North CarolinaIntercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These chartermembers included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian,Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and HighPoint University.

The North State continued to grow over the next30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina(1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change becamenecessary when the league accepted Newberry as its firstSouth Carolina member in 1961. The league took on thename Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC)on May 20th of that year.

The CIAC saw several changes in the followingyears as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962.Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference.

The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975solely as a football conference. The league received itsname from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman ofGreensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-NewmanCollege, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-WebbUniversity, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College,Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. FredBentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league presidentfor its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

After the first season of play in the SAC-8, theBears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first footballtitle.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, theSouth Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conferencesponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’sbasketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conferencegrew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soccer(1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) andwomen’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference wascomposed of the same eight member institutions from 1975until 1988, when Wingate University replaced NewberryCollege as the eighth member institution. Newberry laterrejoined the conference in 1996.

Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and athleticphilosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division IIpostseason play in 1993, the league has sent representativesfrom all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tournaments.

Tusculum College was admitted as a member ofthe league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial Universitybecame the league’s newest member. Brevard College wasadmitted in 2007 as a provisional member.

The league membership now includes BrevardCollege in Brevard, NC; Carson-Newman College inJefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC;Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln MemorialUniversity in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in MarsHill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; TusculumCollege in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University inWingate, NC.

The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the homeof the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Sincethen, it has become known as one of the top basketballfacilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced theMary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home ofLMU basketball since 1948.

The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 forbasketball contests with another 1,000 portable seatsavailable for other events. The distance from the playingfloor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-storybuilding. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space.

The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym containsbatting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams.

Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMUspring and fall commencement services and pinning cer-emonies have been held there since 1991.

LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lowerlevel, with the exception of cross country, softball andvolleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletictraining offices, the university press and the universitypost office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, theTurner Room and a classroom are also located on thelower level and are often used by campus and commu-nity groups for meetings and other functions.

The recently refurbished athletic training room andthe weight room are located on the lower level within easyaccess of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressingrooms.

The upper level contains a ticket office and otheroffices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which

houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upperconcourse also is open to the public as a walking track and isextremely popular with the local community.

Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to thearena (handicap access is available on both levels).

The arena was named after former LMU football standoutB. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds for it’s construc-tion. Work on the multi-million dollar facility began on May 7,1988, and on February 2, 1991, the Railsplitters and LadyRailsplitters held their first contests in the facility when theyhosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a doubleheader. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and hisphilosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from anoccasion in the fall of 1863 when the Presidentwas meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard todiscuss military operations in and around theCumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. ThePresident expressed his appreciation for the loyaltythat the people of the region had shown to theUnion during this time of Civil War. Pointing to thearea on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard,if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do somethingfor these people who have been shut out from theworld all these years. If I live, I will do all I can toaid you and between us we may do them the justicethey deserve. Please remember, and if God is goodto us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled,

but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot thosewords. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academythat was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with theMyers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring theslain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplifythe life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide forUniversity programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which wereexemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges andresponsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people;personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the commonpeople; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2008 enrollment was 3,365 students and there were153 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The maincampus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one ofthe largest Lincoln collections in the country.
