dianthia FoRd-Kee enters her fourth year as Director of Athletics at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania having successfully navigated Lincoln’s Athletic Department to active membership in NCAA Division II and return to the CIAA. Ford-Kee comes to Lincoln from Shaw University

where she spent 18 years working in athletic administration and coaching. Ford-Kee, was named the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) NCAA Division II Female Athletic Administrator of the Year in 2006 while serving as Shaw’s Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. Ford-Kee has been appointed to serve on the NCAA Minority Opportunity & Interest Committee and the CIAA Executive Committee as the Vice President for the Northern Division. She currently serves on the NCAA Division II Project Team to Review Issues Related to Diversity and the NCAA DII Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Selection, NCAA DII Women’s Basketball Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee, Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce, Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce. Previous committee service includes: NCAA Division II Management Council as the CIAA Conference representative from 1999-2005, Committee on Women’s Athletics, Division II Nominating Committee, and NCAA Woman of the Year.

Most recently, Ford-Kee was honored by the Black Women in Sports Foundation for her accompliments at Lincoln University and in the field of athlet-ics with the Legends Award. Ford-Kee has received several honors in the state of North Carolina, she was a 1998 inductee in the Wake County Academy for Women for Athletics and a 1999 nominee of the Governor’s Distinguished Woman Award for Athletics. Recently, in October of 2009, she was honored and the recipient of the Northern Illinois University’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Golden Anniversary Alumni Award for she was 1 of the 50 alumni who has distinguished themselves in their careers that have contributed to the worlds of education, science, scholarship, business, law, medicine, community leadership and engagement, philanthropy and government service. At Shaw, Ford-Kee’s responsibilities included financial planning and budgeting; special events planning, contract negotiations, compliance; and serv-ing as representative to University committees and community activities. She also served as the advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and liaison to the University Gender Equity Committee. Ford-Kee’s volleyball teams played for the conference championship four times, winning the 1995 CIAA Volleyball Championship. Ford-Kee was a two-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1995 and 2001). Since the conference realignment in 1997, the Lady Bears won the Eastern Division Championship five times and shared the divisional championship in 1998. Under Ford-Kee, Shaw compiled an overall Eastern Division record of 57-3, a conference mark of 203-66 and an overall record of247-158. Ford-Kee has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success with her softball program. Her team members have won NCAA national statistical honors as well as NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships. Shaw won the CIAA Softball Championship three times (1994, 1996 and 2003). Ford-Kee was named CIAA Softball Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 2003. The 1996 team was undefeated in the CIAA and compiled an overall seasonal record of 39-9. Ford-Kee led Shaw to a conference record of 212-86 and an overall mark of 309-207. While competing in the sports of basketball and softball as a student at Fayetteville State University she was a member of the 1979 CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship Team and the 1982 CIAA Softball Championship Team. Ford-Kee earned several All Conference and Tournament Team honors and was selected MVP of the 1982 Softball Championship Tournament. In 1982 she was selected Fayetteville State University’s Athlete of the Year and was the youngest inductee into Fayetteville State University’s Athletic Hall of Fame (1997). Ford-Kee also taught Public Administration courses at Shaw for 10 years. Among some of the courses she taught during a 10-year period at Shaw included Public Personnel Administration, Organized Theory & Behavior, Introduction to Public Administration and Human Resources. A native of Lawrenceville, New Jersey Ford-Kee was inducted into the inaugural class of Lawrence High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 as the first athlete in the history of the high school to score over 1000 points playing only 3 years of high school basketball. She currently holds basketball records that have not been broken at Lawrence High School in Lawrenceville, NJ in its 43 years of existence. Ford-Kee earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Fayetteville State University in 1982 and a master’s degree in Public Affairs from Northern Illinois University in 1984. She is married to Preston Kee, Jr. and the mother of three, Brandon and Fannezha Ford and Iman Kee.

Robert R. Jennings became the thirteenth President of Lincoln University on January 2, 2012. Dr. Jennings brings with him many years of experience in strategic planning, operational and financial management, program and policy development, fundraising, research (grants/con-

tracts) development/management, and student affairs. His career in higher education includes serving as the tenth President of Alabama A&M University as well as serving in various executive-level positions at Wake Forest University, North Carolina A&T State University, Albany State University, Norfolk State University and Atlanta University. In addition to his extensive record of service and accomplishment in higher education, Dr. Jennings has served as a Loaned Executive to the Reagan administration and was assigned to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He has also served as a consultant to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Services, the U.S. Department of Treasury and was a Lead Trainer for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Dr. Jennings is a dissertation advisor for educational and public administration majors at the Union Graduate School in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the owner of Gems Loving Care, personal care homes that cater to the elderly in metro-Atlanta. Since 1985, he has traveled and/or studied in more than 35 foreign

countries. In 1999, he served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of State, where he trained the Rector and his staff in the areas of strategic plan-ning and external relations at the University of Niamey in Niger, Africa. In 2001, Dr. Jennings was tapped by the Government of Rwanda and served as a consultant to the Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management. Currently, he is Chief Consultant to the Macon County School System in Oglethorpe, Georgia and is Chief Facilitator on a Kellogg Grant to strengthen race relations in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has also served as a consultant to the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Active in both his community and his profession, Dr. Jennings held a five-year term as chairman of the NAACP Education Legal Advisory Board, served a five-year term on the Board of Directors of the University of Virginia’s Council on Minority Research in Special Education, and completed a three-year term as a charter member of the Commission on Philanthropy for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. A former member of the Board of Trustees of Atlanta University, Southwestern Christian College and Leadership Foundation of Atlanta, he completed a four-year term on the Joint Com-mission on Faculty Accountability for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of Girl Scouts, Inc. The recipient of more than 30 major citations and awards, he was selected as a Regional Finalist for a White House Fellowship. He is listed in several major publications including Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Outstanding Young Men of America, Outstanding Per-sonalities of the South, International Register of Profiles, Who’s Who Among Black Americans, Who’s Who Among Special Educators, Who’s Who in the South and the International Directory of Distinguished Leaders. In great demand as a speaker and trainer, Dr. Jennings has published articles in several scholarly journals; served as a columnist for Minority Health Today and edited a book on the State of Black Men in America in 1994. Dr. Jennings is a graduate of Morehouse College where he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Atlanta University where he received the Masters degree in Educational Psychology/Elementary Education, a Specialist degree in Interrelated Learning and a Doctor of Education degree in Administration and Policy Studies. He also holds Masters Certification in Adult Basic Education from the University of Georgia and Masters Certification in Curriculum and Instruction and Gifted Education from Georgia State University. He has studied as a Charles Merrill Fellow at the University of Ghana in West Africa, as a Fulbright Fellow in Recife, Brazil and as an Oxford Roundtable Scholar in Oxford, England.

since its founding in 1854, Lincoln University, the nation’s first de-gree-granting Historically Black University, has had an internation-

ally recognized commitment to excellence in scholarship and service. Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts. In addition to our more visible graduates – Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ’30, poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29, the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30, and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah ‘39 - Lincoln University and its graduates have achieved the fol-lowing additional distinctions: participated in the founding of eight universi-ties in the United States and abroad, created the organization (Crossroads Africa) which served as the model for the U.S. Peace Corps, and published the first Alumni Magazine of any college or university (1884). Lincoln gradu-ates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the first African American female rear ad-miral in the U.S. Navy, Lillian Fishburne ’71. The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its founder, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey, his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson, and the first two students - James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. Lin-coln University was initial-ly chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Je-hudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln Univer-sity in 1866 after the as-sassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and interna-tional enrollment from the surrounding community and region, and around the world. The Univer-sity admitted women students in 1952, and formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeduca-tional university. A total of 15,500 students have graduated from Lincoln since its founding in 1854. Lincoln University has had 12 presidents that have made distinctive and significant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. They include Dickey (1853-78); John Pym Carter (1856-61); John Wynne Martin (1861-65); Isaac Norton Rendall (1856-1906); John Ballard Rendall (1906-24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1924-26; 1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57); Marvin Wachman (1962-69); Her-man Russell Branson (1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98) and Ivory V. Nelson (1999-present). Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Lin-coln University offers forty (40) academic majors, six (6) pre-professional programs, and five (5) graduate programs to 2,450 students from 24 states and 35 foreign countries. The University has five programs of excellence in Sciences (Chemis-try, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science), Teacher Education, Business and Technology (Accounting and Finance), Mass Communications and the Lincoln-Barnes Center of Excel-lence in Visual Arts. Currently, Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, computer and information sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its undergraduate degrees awarded are in biology, chem-istry, physics, mathematics and computer science. In addition, Lincoln Uni-versity has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates (1989 to

2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. Under Ivory Nelson’s presidency, the Board of Trustees approved chang-es that redefined the core curriculum and curriculum structure to keep pace with the ever changing face of higher education and prepare Lincoln’s stu-dents for success in graduate and professional studies and high potential career aspirations. Currently, Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of Af-rican Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, com-puter and information sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its undergraduate degrees awarded are in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. In addition, Lincoln University has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates (1989 to 2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lincoln also operates a 200,000 square foot Center for Graduate Studies and Continuing Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2000, the University began massive programmatic and physical plant upgrades. In the eight years that followed, Lincoln University secured $275

million to enhance the physical facilities and re-design the campus’ infra-structure. These funds allowed the University to construct a new High-Tech Science and General Classroom Building as well as a state-of-the-art Interna-tional Cultural Center. In addition to new con-struction, several major renovation projects of the University’s existing buildings were under-taken, including Ware Center, University Hall, Grim Hall, Wright Hall, the Langston Hughes Memorial Library, the Student Union Build-ing and the University’s Center for Graduate and Continuing Education in Philadelphia.

It was also during this time that Lincoln achieved its first ever investment grade rating (A-3 rating from Moody’s Investor’s Service) that resulted in the sale of $40 million in bonds to construct a new 409-bed, air-conditioned residence hall to house its students. In April of 2006, Lincoln University continued its commitment to enhance the quality education and campus life experience for its student body, with the reinstatement of a football program and marching band to commence in fall 2008. The proposed move from Division III to Division II in 2006 also required the addition of a women’s softball team to the athletic offerings. In recent years, Lincoln has provided its male and female students the opportunity to participate in collegiate competition in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, cross country and volleyball. The Lincoln University track and field athletes have compiled an outstanding record of achieve-ment in NCAA competition, capturing a total of 17 men’s and women’s na-tional championships. In celebrating Lincoln University’s historic past and promising future, we recognize and honor Lincoln’s three historic purposes: 1. The Academic Affairs division has a core mission of sustaining a nurturing learning environment capable of transforming its learners into academic achievers, professional contributors, and leaders in their fields of interest. The academic year brought continued progress in Lincoln University’s commitment to produce the caliber of graduates who can thrive in the cul-turally diverse, technological and global society in which they will live and work. The division is proud of its enduring legacy of outstanding teach-ing and mentoring of a wide cross-section of students. Approximately 2300 from within the United States and 100 from international origins. The university welcomed the class of 2010, the first freshmen cohort to study under a new, more academically rigorous undergraduate curricu-lum with its more compact, interdisciplinary core. The revised curriculum enhances the recently established five Centers of Excellence, including the new Lincoln-Barnes Visual Arts major in the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies. With selected minor concentrations in Museum and Collections Studies, Museum Education, Museum Communications and Professional Studio, the Barnes partnership seeks to create leaders in the cultural arts and mu-seum genre through a unique educational experience. Unlike any other art program in the nation, the Barnes partnership has the core component of enabling students to study at a museum and come face-to-face with a col-lection of paintings by world famous artists. The School of Social Sciences and Behavioral Studies continues the ad-vancement of its Center of Excellence in Business and Information Technol-ogy, which is equipping its banking, management, and accounting majors in all facets of enterprise resource planning, management, and entre-preneurial development. The unique-ness of this center provides students at Lincoln University the prospect of transforming an idea into a marketable product to create employment oppor-tunities and wealth. The Center of Excellence in Teach-er Education and Urban Pedagogy focuses on enhancing the ability of Lincoln University to help reverse the declining number of teachers in kin-dergarten through high school. This will be achieved by equipping students with the skills to provide young learn-ers with the knowledge and tools to be successful in institutions of higher education or the workforce. Under the guidance of the faculty of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Center of Excel-lence in Computational Science at Lincoln University will endeavor to be a key player in resolving the most important and complex scientific questions of the 21st Century. The center will concentrate on applications in environ-mental science, material science and biomedical science. This will enable graduates of Lincoln University to join the ranks of professionals engaged in understanding the complexities of alternative energy and biotechnology and resolving problems that are impossible by theory and physical experi-mentation alone. Now completing its third year of operation, Lincoln’s Excellent Academic Program in Science (L.E.A.P.S.), a $2.4 million program funded by the Na-tional Science Foundation, identifies and provides a pre-freshman summer bridge program for talented high schools seniors (31 in 2006-07) and is a retention-building centerpiece of this Center of Excellence. This pro-gram will position Lincoln University to significantly increase the number of science and mathematics majors enrolling in graduate and professional schools. In the area of student research, science majors regularly participate in summer research internships and Lincoln’s annual science fair as well as poster sessions sponsored by the Philadelphia Alliance for Minority Partici-pation and the University of Florida. Furthermore, Lincoln’s School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has

concluded a major agreement with the School of Engineering of Morgan State University to begin a dual degree program in civil and industrial engi-neering. Participants will receive a bachelor’s degree in physics from Lincoln and in engineering from Morgan in a three-two format (three years at Lincoln and two at Morgan). Other achievements during the year included approval of Lincoln’s Teacher Certification Programs by the Pennsylvania Department of Educa-tion. Those programs are Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education with English, Spanish, French, Music, History, Po-litical Science, Social Studies Certification, Mathematics, and Biology as cognate areas. Graduate Reading, Elementary Education, and Early Child-hood Education also received approval. Significantly, Lincoln University was the only institution—state-related or private independent—to join a consortium of the fourteen state-owned universities and fourteen community colleges to undertake a major “articu-lation” project. Its purpose is to define general education, course credit equivalency among the schools to ease the transfer of students between the schools. Continuing through 2007-2008, the project will evaluate over

a thousand courses in the building of a database of courses (managed by AcademyOne) that are immediately transferable among the 29 participat-ing institutions. Faculty and students continued to distinguish themselves, increasing national recognition for the univer-sity. Dr. Kenneth VanDover, of the English and Mass Communications Department, spent a year lecturing on detective fiction and theory and the development of the novel in the University of Vienna in Austria as a Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Emmanuel Babatunde, of the Sociology and Anthropology Department, was ap-pointed a Fulbright Senior Specialist and lectured on anthropology at the Eduardo Mondland University in Mo-zambique, Africa. Recipients of the Board of Trust-ees Distinguished Faculty Awards were Dr. Jeffrey Hoogeveen, winner of the Hildrus S. Poindexter Distin-guished Faculty Award for Research; Dr. Babatunde, winner of the Sora-ya M. Coley Distinguished Faculty Award for Service; and Dr. Goro Na-gase, winner of the Henry Cornwall

Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. Dr. Marilyn Button, chair of the Department of English and Mass Communications, received the Christian R. and Mary Lindback Outstanding Teaching Award. Members of the faculty were engaged in continuous research efforts while a $4.2 million award from the Pennsylvania Department of Health was won to study colorectal cancer among residents in Northeast Pennsylvania. Drs. Anna Hull and Karen Baskerville will collaborate on the study. Additionally, the university was awarded a pair of $500,000 grants, one from the Department of Defense to investigate protein dynamics by using a single molecule spectroscope and another from NASA and the Depart-ment of Defense to recruit and retain minority physics and pre-engineering majors. Dr. Derrick Swinton will investigate protein dynamics and Dr. Willie Williams is the principal investigator for the grant from NASA and the De-partment of Defense. Students, on the other hand, achieved national recognition in a com-petitive academic arena. Senior accounting major Rumbi Tabvuma won first place in a national oratorical contest held in Indianapolis, Ind. Meanwhile, Briquel Sherman, Anthony Sherland and Talisha Cook were among winners at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students held in Anaheim, Calif.

student aFFaiRs & enRoLLMent ManageMent In its continuing effort to enhance the quality of the living and learning environment at Lincoln, the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Man-agement (SAEM) continued to augment the numerous programs, activities and services available to students at the university. Life outside the class-room is more vibrant and stimulating perhaps than anytime before in the his-tory of the university, given the numerous new initiatives that are currently occurring on the campus. With each passing year, Lincoln becomes more popular as witnessed by the record number of applications for admission that we are receiving annu-ally. In 2006-07, both the undergraduate and graduate admissions offices achieved new enrollment records by enrolling the largest number of new undergraduate and graduate students in university history. With these re-cords, the university also broke its previous year’s record for overall student enrollment by enrolling a total of 2,423 students for the academic year.The university continues also to set records for Open House attendance and the number of visitors to the campus annually. In addition to the great admissions news, Lincoln’s retention rate for first-time freshman increased, showing that not only are more students matriculating, more students are also staying to take advantage of the full Lincoln experience. The division of SAEM continued to offer students a wide array of co-curricular academic support programs and experiential learning experiences via the Learn-ing Resource Center and Act 101 Achievement Program, the Office of International Programs and Services (including study abroad), the Office of Minority Male Health and the Of-fice of Student Life and Develop-ment. The LRC and Act 101 Achieve-ment Program continued to offer supplemental instruction and tutor-ing in reading, writing and math for all students enrolled in develop-mental courses and provided spe-cialized counseling and programs for students enrolled in the Act 101 program. The study abroad and service learning numbers continue to rise as students continue to study in virtually every continent with new programs in Argentina, Ireland, Ecuador and Cambodia, as well as increased en-rollment at the university-sponsored program in Japan. The Office of Minority Male Health continued community outreach efforts on and off campus as it daily demonstrated a concern for the health and welfare of our students and local community residents. The office started a mentoring program with local middle school students and continued to offer its LU Fitness Challenge programs. In addition, the Upward Bound program continued its SMARTS (Stay Motivated and Reduce Teen Smoking) initiative and the Women’s Center and Student Health Services conducted a massive HIV and AIDS campaign and made available on campus rapid testing for students on two occasions during the academic year. The Office of Student Life and Development and Department of Resi-dence Life engaged in collegial competition as it sought to bring new and requested programs to the students of Lincoln University. The office continued to operate the New Student Orientation and Transi-tion Week program and its First Year Experience Program for new students, which is undoubtedly one of the key mechanisms in the increased first-year student retention rate. To augment the positive retention data on first year students, the Office of Student Services began the planning and develop-ment of a Sophomore Experience Program, with implementation set for the 2008-09 academic year. One of the greatest areas of achievement within the division has been the provision of services to all students enrolled at the University. During the 2006-07 academic year, safety and security received a major boost with the significant capital purchase of a CCTV camera surveillance system for the entire campus. With the implementation of over 120 cameras throughout the campus, many with point, tilt and zoom capability, the De-partment of Public Safety is able to visually patrol all 422 acres of the univer-sity campus. The immediate payback for this system was seen throughout the academic year as department personnel were able to use this system to prevent and solve numerous cases on campus.

The student body and university community continue to be excited about the passage and implementation of the Student Enhancement Initiative, a Board of Trustees approved resolution that returns football and a marching band to the campus and allows Lincoln to transfer from NCAA Division III to Division II intercollegiate athletics and affiliating with the Central Intercol-legiate Athletic Association. All academic buildings on campus have or soon will be renovated. In 2006-07, a $12 million renovation project began on the Student Union Build-ing as well as Phase I of making the campus wireless. To augment all that is happening programmatically, the university is continuing to renovate and build facilities to meet the needs and desires of current students and to at-tract new students. The year represented another step in sustained determination by the divi-sion to make Lincoln University one of the most student-centered campuses in the nation.

Major renovations and input for design, quality control and coordination on the many Commonwealth-funded construction projects took place on

the main campus. During the year, Physical Plant personnel provided assistance of capital projects in prog-ress. The maintenance and upgrade of our facilities during this period in-cluded:

• LLC Auxiliary Boiler • University Hall Renovations and Furniture/Fixtures/ Equipment• Ware Center and Furniture/Fix tures/ Equipment • Back-up Generator• HVAC Systems and Controls• Asbestos Abatement• Roof Upgrades• Life Science Ventilation Upgrades

The university is in the planning stages of additional upgrades or new construction. They include a $40.5 million General Classroom and Technology Building, an International

Center and renovations of Langston Hughes Memorial Library and Wright Hall. Additionally, plans are under way to con-struct a tennis court and softball field and an academic center for learning and counseling. All of these efforts contributed to a new look and the air of anticipation as most academic buildings and the campus landscape will undergo modernization or be supplanted by larger, new structures and a dynamic new vista. In addition the Graduate Center campus is undergoing a dramatic trans-formation. An outside developer is investing $29 million to completely reno-vate and modernize the building. The university will occupy two floors in the renovated facility. The building will house efficient, all new equipment and interiors at one of the premier locations in Philadelphia. Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, risk management, disaster recovery and improved administrative systems were the issues driving the direction of the University’s Information Technology department. Many upgrades supported the renovation of the new buildings including replacement of the University’s voice mail system, completely new equip-ment and furniture for renovated buildings, expansion of the wireless net-work, conversion to a new, renumbered direct dial phone system for bet-ter security, new security cameras, a new administrative LionCard to allow electronic payment across the campus for auxiliary enterprises, including laundry, books, meals and copying in the library. New pianos also have been purchased and Smartboards have been placed in classrooms. The implementation of the new Datatel COLLEAGUE system for general ledger, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, budgets, admissions, billing, student housing and registrar remained at the forefront of IT operations. During the year, all relevant users began intensive Datatel training to pre-pare for the upstart and smooth transition to the new system. The upgrades in IT and refurbishments in Physical Plant highlighted the university’s efforts to provide a safe and efficient work environment and maintain our facilities and support services at a level conducive to learning.

The Division of Development and External Rela-tions sustained its momentum of increasing do-nations from various sources and winning friends for the university through a well-conceived ap-proach. The division supported the initiatives of the president to enhance national and international awareness of the university’s growing impact on teaching, research and community outreach. The division played a key role in the institution’s suc-cessful effort to establish an academic partner-ship with the University of Science and Technol-ogy in Rivers State, Nigeria. Moreover, the division supported the newly formed collaboration with The Barnes Foundation to implement a bachelor of arts degree program. The Barnes Foundation collaboration is the first of its kind in the nation and has gained the status as a Center of Excellence. The division has been actively involved in pro-moting the high achievements of faculty, staff, students and alumni in the various media. For ex-ample, articles on some aspect on the university appeared in Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Ebony and Jet magazines. The Office of Public Relations made special effort to keep university

constituents, including alumni and major donors, aware of new developments primarily through two publications, The Lincoln Review and The Lincoln Lion. Throughout the year, students gained firsthand knowledge about current issues and future trends in business and industry from senior executives of Fortune 500 companies under the leadership of the Executive in Residence program. This pro-gram also features personal interaction between students and senior level executives.

Among executives participating in the pro-gram was former Emmy awarding winning CNN anchor Valerie Morris, Shannon Moore, a region-al Vice President with Enterprise Rent-a-Car and John O’Brien, vice president of Emerging Brands at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. In an enduring commitment to assist students in workforce preparedness, the division again sponsored a career fair for undergraduate stu-dents that attracted 90 representatives from vari-ous business and educational entities. Additionally, the division conducted career fairs for graduate students interested in pursuing a career in medicine and law. Over 600 students took advantage of the opportunities to learn more about advanced degrees in areas where African-Americans and other minorities are underrepre-sented. A remarkable achievement was the overall in-crease of contributions from the university’s vari-ous constituents. With the aid of 264 first-time donors, alumni giving increased from $426,007 a year ago to $478,580. There was also a significant increase in overall contributions, which nearly tripled from $1,938,493 to $3,335,349.

Harding, on June 6, 1921 addressed the graduat-ing class and dedicated the Alumni Arch, a me-morial to Lincoln men who served in World War I, and the front gateway to campus; and Gerald Ford toured the campus in 1978.

• First group of Peace Corps trainees arrived on Lincoln’s campus for their training session on February 7, 1963.

• Lincoln’s track and field programs have won an unprecedented 17 NCAA Division III champion-ships.

• Nnamdi Azikiwe, first president of Nigeria (1963), Lincoln class of 1930.

• Harry W. Bass, First African American to be elected to the Pennsylvania legislature (1910), an 1886 Lincoln graduate.

Brian Howard enters his first year as Sports Information and Media Specialist at Lincoln University.Before coming Lincoln University, Howard spent a year as Sports Information Director at Young Harris

College in Young Harris, Ga., and a year at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Prior to taking over duties at LeTourneau University, Howard spent nearly two years covering Gulf South Conference action at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. As Sports Information Direc-tor, he was in charge of 14 varsity sports. In his first season at Ouachita Baptist, Howard covered three NCAA Division II regional tournaments, including women’s soccer and men’s basketball in Tampa, Fla. One of the biggest highlights came in the spring of 2008 when he was a part of the Ouachita Baptist baseball program, which won the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship and finished runner-up in the National Championships. Before taking the job at Ouachita Baptist, Howard spent a year and a half covering Gulf South Confer-ence action at the University of West Alabama. While in Livingston, Ala., and covering West Alabama, his duties included being a contact for various sports, primarily volleyball, women’s basketball and softball. Other duties included producing media guides, writing press releases, maintaining the athletic web site

and being the public address announcer for home baseball and softball games. Howard has been around sports his entire life, spending 15 years as a soccer player. After graduating in 1995 from Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio, Howard attended NCAA Division II Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. During his time at Ashland, Howard was named Outstanding Sophomore of the Year in Radio. He remained very active in the radio and television department, where he served as a sports anchor for the campus television station, campus disc jockey, sports play-by-play and color commentator and sports producer. He worked in sports information during his senior year and was a sports writer for the collegiate newspaper. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Communications in the Spring of 2000. While also in college, Howard was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Prior to graduation, Howard had internships at WEWS News Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio; 97.5 WONE Radio in Akron and the Akron Beacon Journal Newspaper. In the spring of 2000, Howard took his first job at the El Dorado News-Times in El Dorado, Ark. He covered a variety of sports. After a year and a half, he left Arkansas for West Virginia, taking a job at the Mineral Daily News-Tribune in Keyser, W.Va. As sports editor, Howard covered three prep schools, Potomac State Junior College and West Virginia University. The Greenwood Index-Journal in Greenwood, S.C. was the next stopping point for Howard. He covered prep sports, as well as Division II Lander University of the Peach Belt Conference. During his two and a half years at the paper, Howard covered the Peach Belt Conference Basketball Tournament twice, the University of South Carolina and Clemson University football spring games once. He also produced several feature stories and had interviews with former South Carolina head football coach Lou Holtz, former Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden, former Greenwood High School standout Ar-manti Edwards (selected in third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers) and former NFL player Gaines Adams, who died in the spring of 2010. After leaving the Greenwood Index-Journal, Howard spent seven months working for the Jonesboro News Daily in Jonesboro, Ga. During his time at the paper, Howard covered the MBNA Bass Pro Shops 500. His résumé of interviews continued to grow while in Georgia, producing feature stories on Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam. He also covered Clayton State University of the Peach Belt Confer-ence. Howard, 35, is the son of Joe and Sally Howard.

The primary purpose of the Lincoln University Sports Information Office is to serve as liaison be-tween LU’s administration, coaches and student-athletes and the local, state and national media.

Goal: To facilitate the requests of LU officials and athletes as well as print and electronic media in or-der to ensure the best possible media coverage of Lincoln’s varsity sports. The department provides a wide range of other services (such as the internet) to meet the ever-growing needs of media covering collegiate sports, as well as to assist other infor-mation-seeking organizations and individuals. In addition, the department serves as the chief public relations branch of LU athletics, keeping image a top priority in its dealings with media, fans and oth-ers wishing to learn more about Lincoln University athletics and its people.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Arranging and overseeing all media inter-views. 2. Arranging and monitoring press conferences and teleconferences. 3. Handling credential requests for games/matches. 4. Coordination of gameday on-site operations. 5. Producing informational and promotional pub-lications. 6. Writing and distributing press releases and compiling and distributing statistical information. 7. Keeping the website posted with up-to-date information in a timely manner.

Goal: To keep organized, thorough files on all Lincoln University varsity sports for use by media and others. Current season files are kept on each athlete and coach in the Sports Information Office. Files contain photos, media guides, releases, results and other pertinent information. The formulation of electronic computer files that will store press releases, stats, etc., will be implemented in the near future.

Publications

Goal: All basketball publications, posters and schedule cards are produced in a timely, top-quality manner and distributed to media. Media guides are provided for men’s and wom-en’s basketball and football at Lincoln University. The size and number of each publication is deter-mined by the history (records, tradition, etc...) and the media demand for that particular sport. Posters and schedule cards may also be produced for var-sity sports that are considered spectator sports.

Goal: To provide adequate media relations ser-vices for varsity teams on the road. A Sports Information representative will travel to all games with football, men’s basketball, women’s

basketball if no other home conflicts occur. A mem-ber of the Sports Information staff will travel with other teams on a need-only basis. (Otherwise, the Sports Information staff member will make arrange-ments with the host school to receive results for re-port to state and local media.)

Goal: To report results of all varsity sporting events to local, state and when appropriate, nation-al media, as well as the LU website (lulions.com).

Public relations and fans

Goal: The Sports Information Office, in conjunc-tion with marketing and promotions, responds to fans’ requests for information, photos, etc., in a courteous and prompt manner.

Chris Vigneault is entering his third full year as Lincoln’s Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer. Chris is employed through NovaCare Rehabilitation and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Lincoln University and its student-athletes. NovaCare Rehabilitation, the LEADER in physical therapy and occupational therapy, focuses on excellence in clinical care and customer service. Chris and the NovaCare staff have developed one of the most comprehensive training support services for the student-athletes and staff at Lincoln University. Teamed with NovaCare and equipped with one of the best facili-ties in NCAA Division II, Lincoln’s athletic trainers ensure the safety and health well-being of each student-athletes, coaches and staff. Through Chris’s leadership, the student-athletes currently have access to team physicians, physi-cal therapist, and an injury clinic on a weekly basis on campus. He has implemented an athletic training policies and procedures manual, concussion management protocol, emergency action plans, confidentiality statements, and drug testing polices to name a few. Annually, Chris organizes health and wellness programs for the athletes and the Nova-Care staff assist with the University’s health and wellness programs for staff and summer camps. Prior to working at Lincoln University, he most recently worked as the Head Athletic Trainer for the 2008 Arena Bowl Champion Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League (AFL). He was the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Soul in 2006 & 2007 before moving up to the Head Athletic Trainer position in 2008. In addition, he has worked with Arena Football League franchises Indiana Firebirds and Norfolk Nighthawks. Chris spent time in Professional Hockey

and was the Head Athletic Trainer for the 2005 Kelly Cup Champions Trenton Titans (ECHL) as well as an Interim Athletic Trainer for the Norfolk Admirals (AHL) during his career. A graduate of Old Dominion University, he earned a B.S. in physical education with an emphasis in Sports Medicine. Chris is a member of the National Athletics Trainers Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, Athletic Trainers Society of New Jersey and is licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine, New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners and the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine. Chris resides in New Jersey with his wife Kelly and their two boys Jacob and Chase.

She is very committed to helping others and giving back to the community. In the past few years, she has volunteered to work multiple national marathons and summer Special Olympics as medical staff. Christine grew up in the area with her alma mater being Avon Grove High School and is very excited to be returning home.

2011-2012 Season Preview


SEASON PREVIEWLULIONS.COM The Lincoln University women’s basketball team will start from the ground up this season. The Lady Lions usher in a new head coach and will look to bounce back from a 3-24 season in 2010-2011. Jessica Kern is no stranger to collegiate athletics, having ran track & field at Penn State University and played women’s professional basketball overseas. Her knowledge of the sport led her to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin. Kern takes over a program in search of the right winning formula and in the offseason, the first-year coach is on the right path by mixing five key returners with several newcomers. The newcomers feature freshman and several collegiate transfers.

Lincoln returns five players off last year’s team and one member return-ing from the 2009-2010 season to the hardwood. The Lady Lions will look to none other than senior sharay duBose. DuBose (G, 5-6, Salisbury, Md.) surpassed the 1,000-point plateau as a junior, reaching the feat against Chowan on Jan. 24, 2011. Last season, DuBose had 16 double-digit scor-ing games, including scoring more than 20 points five times. She led the team in scor-ing by averaging 13.2 points and shot 37.5 percent (106-of-283) from the floor and was 103-of-134 (77 percent) from the free-throw line. “Entering her se-nior season, Sharay will be looked to not only for scoring, but leadership,” Kern said. “Her load will be a bit less this year and she will be able to focus on her trade of creating shots and stroking it from the outside.” Cynthia John-son, who was se-lected to the All-CIAA Rookie Team last sea-son, will look to settle in at the point position. Johnson (SO, PG, 5-7, Randallstown, Md.) averaged 7.6 points, while shooting 29.7 percent from the floor. She had seven double-digit scoring games, including pouring in a career-high 15 points twice (at Chowan on Feb. 10, 2011 and vs. Shaw on Feb. 28). “CJ will have help at the point position this year and will settle in to her true position of a slasher,” Kern said. “Her quickness and knack for the fast break will fit in well with our transition offense.” Another key returner is Brittney Waters. Waters (JR, SG, 5-10, Capi-tol Heights, Md.) was second on the team in scoring by averaging 10.0 points per game. She shot 29.8 percent and had 10 double-digit scoring games. Her biggest output was 26 points on Feb. 24 against Saint Paul’s College. “A true scorer that has yet to reach her potential,” Kern said. “Brittney worked very hard in the offseason and has become a leader thus far in the

season. Teams can look forward to more than just 3-pointers from her this year.” Mfon ekanem will be depended on in the middle to bolster the post position. Ekanem (JR, C, 6-2, Springdale, Md.) played and started in all 26 games last season for the Lady Lions. She averaged 2.2 points and scored a career-high six points twice (vs. Millersville on Dec. 12, 2010 and vs. Saint Paul’s on Feb. 5, 2011). Although she didn’t figure much in the scoring category, Ekanem was a force on the boards, averaging 7.1 rebounds. She registered double-digit rebounds in eight games and pulled down a career-high 16 at Elizabeth City State on Feb. 8, 2011. “Mfon has committed herself not only to the weight room, but in pre-season training,” Kern said. “A rebounding threat last season - she will be a threat on both ends of the court this year. Her ability to find the ball has raised the bar for our other post players.” tahlar Mcintosh (JR, SF, 5-8, Pittsburgh, Pa.) saw limited action last season by playing in 11 games and starting in four. She averaged 7.0 points per game and pulled down 5.9 rebound per game. In 217 minutes, McIntosh was 29-of-66 shooting for 44 percent. She scored a career-high 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her only double-double of the season at Washington Adventist on Jan. 4, 2011.

“Tahlar is com-ing back to us from an ACL tear and has worked very hard in rehab in the offsea-son and over the summer,” Kern said. “With the diligence of NovaCare and her toughness, we wel-come her back as a great rebounder and threat from all spots on the floor.” The last returner didn’t play during the 2010-2011 season. tequila Jimenez (SR, F, 6-2, South Jersey, N.J.) rejoins the squad after a year off. In 2009-2010, Jimenez played in 25 games, starting in five. She averaged 2.7 points and 1.8 re-bounds. In 192 min-utes, Jimenez was 28-of-68 shooting for 41.2 percent. “Tequila joins us from the 2009-2010 roster,” Kern said. “Her height and soft touch around the basket assists us in rebounding, extend-ing defenses and depth at the center position.”

1. What are your expectations coming into the season?As stated at the pre-season press conference: “ Growth means change and change involves rick. Lincoln Women’s basketball will catapult to a

level in which we will be a respected force in this conference. With transition comes change and with change comes progress. This program is headed in a direction of discipline, structure and toughness. A pre-season pick of 6th was hum-bly anticipated – as our style of play is ran with a since of urgency so is our itch to excel in our Division and in such a prestigious conference.”

2. This is your first year at Lincoln. Talk about your previous stops and what you learned from those places?I was extremely lucky to work for such success-ful Head Coaches. Sandy Botham at University Wisconsin Milwaukee has the most wins of any

coach in Horizon League History and Danny Evans at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff turned what was a last place SWAC team to title contenders. Coach Botham’s history as a historic player and coach at the University of Notre Dame under current legend Muffy McCraw, aided in UWM’s aggressive post play and hard nose defensive schemes. Dan-ny Evans, former Oklahoma State University stand-out player, Southern University assistant coach (SWAC Champions 2010) and Head Coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was able to be successful in his array of offensive quick hitter schemes and well conditioned teams. A variety of these philosophies in addition to my mentor/father- 30 years as a High School Head Coach –Robert Kern’s disciplined defense ori-ented team philosophy, I have been able to create my own identity.

3. Sharay Dubose is the featured player and had an outstanding career at Lincoln thus far. Talk about her character and the level of play she brings game in and game out?Sharay DuBose is a natural leader. She has had to be a all-around de-fender in the past and carry a great load of our offense. Not only is she a stellar athlete she is a great student as well. This year I am excited that she gets to focus on guard play and she has help on both ends of the court. Her ability to adapt to many different situations keeps me optimistic in her transition to a new scheme and new players. Any coach would be lucky to have her. I am honored to have her as my sole return-ing senior this year.

4. The CIAA is such a tough conference. What do you expect from your team in Northern Division play, but overall against conference foes?Hard work, although mentioned by so many people so many ways, is the force that drives these young ladies and my staff daily. Coach Kisha Middleton and Coach Amber Sneed in collaboration with several man-agers, Administration and support staff are collectively doing what is needed to make this program run like a well-oiled machine. Respect is given to the all the teams and coach’s in this conference that have been diligent in their efforts to become powerhouses and contenders year in and year out. We believe that by becoming students in the classroom and on the court, coupled with discipline and old fashioned hard work we can humbly leave our stamp on the Northern Division and the CIAA conference.

ASA Community College. Moore (JR, PG/SG, 5-7, Hampton, Va.) may have been one of the biggest recruiting steals for the first-year head coach. Moore, who chose Lincoln over Old Dominion, William & Mary and Hamp-ton, has career highs of 26 points, 11 assists, 10 steals and nine boards while at Woodside High School, where she earned back-to-back All-Second Team District honors. “Denyse is an explosive guard that came to us via ASA College/Dela-ware State,” Kern said. “Her quickness on both ends of the court, scoring and leadership abilities will help us tremendously this year.” Another solid transfer and teammate of Moore is darleen McLeod. McLeod (JR, SF/PF, 5-10, Bronx, N.Y.) was a First-Team All-City selection while at John F. Kennedy High School. “Darleen, an ASA College transfer, will be a presence in the post defen-sively and offensively be able to stretch the defense with her outside pres-ence,” Kern said. The final trio that comes to Lincoln from ASA Community College is Lerynica Miller. Miller (JR, PF, 6-0, Brooklyn, N.Y.), who was a McDon-ald’s All-American nominee, helped guide Saint Peter’s High School to a 14th straight Staten Island Championship. “Lerynica was a highly decorated Division I recruit,” Kern said. “We were lucky to have her as an additional threat in the paint.” Krystal Fluellen (JR, SF/PF, 6-0, New York, N.Y.) comes to Lincoln from Mohawk Community College where she helped guide the school to the 2011 Regional Championship with a 30-2 record. She was selected to the All-Regional, All-Conference and National All-Tournament teams. “Krystal gives a flexibility in that she can defend, shoot the long ball and play in the paint,” Kern said. The pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts are Courtney Lu-cas and alaysia Washington. Lucas (FR, G/F, 5-10, Washington, D.C.) played at Friendship Collegiate Academy where she helped the squad to four straight championships, in-cluding going undefeated in conference play last season. “Courtney was a highly sought incoming freshman throughout the CIAA,” Kern said. “We are gracious she chose Lincoln to be her home and her long frame coupled with athleticism and a mature basketball IQ is a threat.” A teammate with Lucas at Friendship Collegiate Academy was Wash-ington. Washington (FR, PG, 5-4, Washington, D.C.) also helped the school to four straight championships and garnered the 2009 MVP at the Carroll Christmas Tournament. She was selected 2010 WCSAA All-Conference and 2010 MVP of Championship game. “Alaysia will be a quick blur if you blink,” Kern said. “We are anxious to see her push the ball in our free-flowing offense.” Jacque dorsey (SR, F, 5-7, Parkersburg, Pa.) is in her final year at Lincoln and will be a solid addition to the squad. “Although undersized, Jacque plays her role well and is efficient around the basket,” Kern said.

the sCheduLe The Lady Lions begin the 2011-2012 season on the road at the Ohio Valley University Conference Challenge and follow that two-day tournament with a road game at Georgian Court. Lincoln’s home opener comes Nov. 16 at Manuel Rivero Hall as the Lady Lions take on Washington Adventist. Two days later, the annual rivalry renews as Lincoln meets Cheyney in the “Battle of the Firsts” at the Liacou-ras Center at Temple University. November ends with a road contest on the 28th against Bloomsburg and a home game on the 30th versus Philadel-phia University. Only three games highlight the month of December as Lincoln plays host to St. Thomas Aquinas on the 3rd and then 13 days later, travels to Central State before Christmas Break. The Lady Lions conclude the 2011 portion of the schedule Dec. 30 at Kutztown. Just two days after ringing in the new year, Lincoln plays host to Ohio Valley - it’s second matchup between the two schools - on Jan. 2. A road trip three days later awaits as the Lady Lions open CIAA play. Three straight home games from Jan. 7-12 highlight the schedule as Livingstone, Johnson C, Smith and Fayetteville State come to Manuel Rivero Hall. However, Lincoln spends the next five games, including four CIAA con-tests on the road, first at Winston-Salem State on the 14th. Trips to Shaw, Elizabeth City State, Chowan and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore await. The end of the month features back-to-back home games as Bowie State and Virginia Union come to town. Much like the end of January, the beginning of February features three consecutive home games as Virginia State, Elizabeth City State and Chow-an all make an appearance at Lincoln. The following three games will end conference play as the Lady Lions travel to Bowie State, Virginia Union and Virginia State. The CIAA Basketball Tournament, played in Charlotte, N.C., at the Time Warner Cable Arena, begins Feb. 27 and will run until March 3.

on April 14, 2011, Jessica Kern was named the ninth head coach in the history of the women’s bas-ketball program and the first full-time female coach.

Kern comes to Lincoln University as a highly decorated professional women’s basketball player and collegiate standout. This past season, she served as the assistant women’s coach and media specialist at NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “It is a pleasure to welcome Jessica to our team and introduce her as our new head women’s basketball coach,” said Director of Athletics Dianthia Ford-Kee. “Jessica’s athletic background and experiences will bring a wealth of knowledge to our women’s basketball program. Her career path exemplifies a commit-ment to excellence and she is a role model for our young women.” At the University of UW-M, which is a member of the Horizon League, she assisted in scouting, aided in recruiting and broke down film. The Lady Panthers finished 12-18 and advanced to the league’s quar-terfinals in the postseason tournament. “I am extremely grateful to President Nelson, Mrs. Ford-Kee and the selection committee for consider-ing and choosing me as the new head women’s basketball coach,” Kern said. “Education, hard work and discipline have played a substantial influence in my success thus far in my career. I look forward to instill-ing these qualities into such a special group of young women and am excited to begin this new chapter in

my career.” Prior to her time in Milwaukee, Kern assisted for two seasons at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluffs, a Division I school and member of the South-west Athletic Conference (SWAC). Her personalized individual-approach served the Lady Lions well. Posting a 12-19 record, she helped propel them to their most victories and highest conference tournament finish in 12 years. As the conditioning coordinator and individual skill developer, she assisted Lady Lion standouts Ciara Shields and Arica Green to All-SWAC recognitions as well as Shay Holmes to Newcomer of the Year status. Kern’s career path toward collegiate basketball coaching was unconventional to say the least. After earning a roster spot on the Penn State women’s basketball program, she participated in track and field where she was a two-time All-Academic and All-Big Ten performer. A two-time captain and a 2002 graduate with degrees in communications and sociology, Kern returned to basketball and played professionally in Germany, Switzerland, Romania, and Poland from 2003-2010. While in Switzerland, she led her team with a 25.1 scoring average. A crowd favorite in Poland, Kern ran basketball clinics and gave motivational speeches at the local “University” school. In the off-seasons from 2002-2007 she taught at various Milwaukee High Schools and aided the girls’ basketball and track & field teams. Her 2007 Vincent High School junior varsity squad posted a 20-0 record, and her conditioning program and individualized skill development was a catalyst in Vincent achieving a State Championship. Spare time saw her establishing various basketball camps for girls in underserviced neighborhoods. Continuing her his-tory with running camps, Kern successfully orchestrated the “Lady Lions” First Team Basketball Camp in the summer of 2009. During the summer of 2007, her coaching career took a huge leap forward as she was appointed the head coach of the Arkansas Lady Ballers in the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League, a 20-team national semi-pro women’s league. Kern’s up tempo style, infectious enthusiasm and motivation pro-pelled the Ballers to a victory over the Canadian national team, a regional championship and the national championship in held in Memphis, Tenn. A native of Milwaukee, Wisc., Kern was one of the most decorated scholar/athletes in Milwaukee City Conference history. She received 11 Varsity Let-ters (3-Basketball, 4-Volleyball, 4-Track & Field) and Captained in each sport for multiple years. Her basketball teams played in the State Finals four times, winning the State Title in both her freshmen and sophomore years. In addition, she was an 11-time Individual Conference Champion in Track & Field, a 3-Time All Conference performer in Volleyball and a finalist for the State’s Scholar/Athlete Award.

Kisha Middleton is entering her eighth year on the Lincoln University women’s coaching staff. After spending 6.5 years as an assistant, on Dec. 15, she was named the interim head coach. She became the eighth head coach in the program’s history. Middleton was amongst the coaching staff that had the best win-lose record in Lincoln History as well as the first team in history to have postseason play, which landed the Lady Lions that 2006-07 Independent Championship. Middleton has brought a wealth of experience to the Lady Lions staff. Her duties include aiding in the development of the game plan, coordinating individual drills and practice plans, and recruiting, as well as providing oversight for team conditioning sessions. Middleton played basketball at Robert Morris College (now University), and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Sports Management Administration, and is also a 2008 graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy. Prior to joining Lincoln’s staff, Middleton was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Bryn Mawr Col-lege for two years. She played semi-pro basketball in 2002 in the WABA (Women’s American Basketball Association) as a member of the Wilmington Jaguars. Middleton also played in the Women’s Eastern Basketball Alliance (WEBA) in 2004 with the Delaware Destroyers. A native of Pennsylvania, Middleton Graduated from Coatesville HS, where she earned varsity letters in volleyball and basketball She was noted as one of the Best 3-point shooters in the area. Middleton also

was a part of the first basketball team to ever win a state championship girls or boy at Coatesville HS. She also played for the Philadelphia International team, which toured Belgium.

Amber Sneed is entering in to her first year as an assistant coach at Lincoln University. Prior to coming to Lincoln, Sneed, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio was an assistant varsity basketball coach at Winton Woods High School and worked with girls and boys, with basketball skill training for the last four years. Sneed brings a lot of basketball experience to the Lady Lions staff as her duties include in aiding in individual deveploment of post players and game plan, recruiting, drill and practice plans, while also helping oversee the team skill and conditioning sessions. A four-year letterman at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), Sneed received a Bachelor of Sci-ence degree in Sports Marketing and Sales. After college, she went on the play professional basketball over seas in Viernheim, Germany 2003-2004, and semi-professional basketball for the Ohio Legends 2005. Before entering her third professional season, Sneed had career-ending injury. After suffering the injury, she has helped with the development program for girls and boys in the Tri-state Cincinnati Area with School tutoring and mentoring, public speaking to athletes, life skills off the court and basketball skill improvement on the court. Sneed graduated from Princeton High School, where she was a four-year lettermen in volleyball and basketball. She was noted as a top-10 post player in Ohio and was was named First-Team All-Ohio for both volleyball and basketball.

the histoRy oF the Ciaa The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) was founded in 1912 as the Colored Intercol-legiate Athletic Association and is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the nation. Although the membership has changed since 1912, the CIAA consists of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) spanning the east coast from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. The membership: Bowie State Uni-versity, Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Livingstone College, St. Augustine’s College, Shaw Univer-sity, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and Winston-Salem State University is comprised of both private and public colleges and universities with enrollments ranging from 1,100 to over 7,000 students. Currently, eighty percent of CIAA alumni reside in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. The CIAA is incorporated in the District of Columbia and is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. The conference is headquartered in Hampton, Virginia and is governed by the twelve Presidents and Chancellors of its member institutions. The conference holds championships annually in the following sports: Men’s and Women’s Cross Coun-try; Volleyball; Football; Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track; Men’s and Women’s Basketball; Women’s Bowling; Men’s and Women’s Tennis; Golf; Baseball and Softball. In addition to its outstanding basketball history, the CIAA pioneered the divisional conference football championship game format. In 1970, after dividing the conference into Northern and Southern Divisions, the CIAA played the first confer-ence football championship game in college football history in Petersburg, Virginia. The first black college football game was also played between CIAA schools, Livingstone and Biddle (now Johnson C. Smith) in 1893. Academic success is a staple of the conference. The CIAA recognizes the academic achievement of its student-athletes annually by naming its top student-athletes to the Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. The conference also recognizes the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for student-athletes who have excelled on the field and in the classroom. CIAA student-athletes have achieved success in the professional ranks. Ben Wallace, former basketball standout from Virginia Union University, was named to the 2004 Olympic Team and was instrumental in helping the NBA Detroit Pistons win the 2004 NBA Championship. Charles Oakley also from Virginia Union has played with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors. Darrell Armstrong of Fayetteville State University recently retired from the NBA New Jersey Nets and Ronald Murray of Shaw University cur-rently plays with the NBA Chicago Bulls. Most recently, Greg Toler of St. Paul’s College was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 31st round of the 2009 NFL draft. Former CIAA alumni who found success in professional sports include Earl “The Pearl” Monroe (Win-ston-Salem State University), Sam Jones (North Carolina Central University), Earl Lloyd (West Virginia State University), and Bobby Dandridge (Norfolk State University). The late John McClendon and C.E. “Big House” Gaines are coaching legends and pioneers. CIAA alumni list boasts some of the country’s prominent leaders. They include: the late Reginald Lewis (the owner of the first black billion dollar business - Beatrice Foods); the late Maynard Jackson (first black mayor of Atlanta, GA); Douglas Wilder (first elected black governor - Virginia); Art Shell (the first black NFL head coach in the modern era); and Andrew Young (the first black United States Ambassador to the United Nations). The CIAA receives significant support from corporate America. Over the past ten years companies such as Alltel, Anheuser Busch, Bank of America, Coca-Cola USA, Food Lion and Ford Motor Corporation, Glaxo Smithkline, Geico, Nationwide Insurance, Nike, McDonald’s, Russell Athletic, the American Red Cross, the United States Army, Navy and Marine Corp have assisted the conference in securing $10.5 million in scholarship money for the member institutions and an additional $23 million for other championships and television. With the help of these sponsors, the CIAA can boast its position as the first NCAA Division II conference to have its tournament televised as part of Championship Week on the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN), the cable television giant. One of the nation’s premier sporting events is the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament. Touted as the third most attended basketball tournament among all NCAA divisions, the first tournament was a 2,000 seat sellout in Washington, D.C. The CIAA Tournament recorded consecutive sellouts in the 20,000 seat RBC Center, located in Raleigh, NC when the city was awarded the event in 2000 and 2003. The 2011 CIAA Tournament, in its sixth year in the “Queen City”, Charlotte, NC, boasted over 190,000 fans during the course of the week, while making an economic impact of over $44.3 million. Since the year 2000, the CIAA has generated over $266.06 million in economic impact for the state of North Carolina and over $16.5 million in overall scholarship dollars for CIAA member institutions. Tournament Week offers events for every social palate including parties, numerous educational and healthy-livings components, step shows and a battle of the bands. The men’s and women’s tournaments are held simultaneously and their respective championship games are on Saturday night. The CIAA has received national recognition by being featured in EBONY magazine for six consecutive years, USA Today (front page cover story) and in Essence magazine. The Tournament has also been an annual staple of the Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner Morning Shows. The CIAA Tournament is televised into more than 57 million homes nationwide. In 2005, the conference partnered with ESPN, which included coverage on ESPN Classic, ESPN Plus and ESPN In-Game. ESPN reaches over 99.5 million homes. For the 2010 tournament, the CIAA entered into a first-ever partnership with TV One, a television network that chronicles African-American culture and achievement, to broadcast the men’s quarterfinals and semifi-nal rounds. The CIAA is undoubtedly celebrated as a conference of “firsts”. Its innate spirit of ingenuity and innova-tion continues to keep the CIAA in the forefront; blazing trails for other conferences to follow. As the CIAA enters into 100 years of excellence in athletic competition, the conference and its member institutions con-tinue to build on the rich and honorable traditions of its past; while providing leadership into the future.
