2008-09 PREviEwMiSSiON: RESTORE THE GLORY

2008-09 SOONER SQUAD

Every season in any sport presents obstacles a team must overcome in order to display greatness and achieve goals. The 2008-09 Oklahoma wrestling team is no different, as the Sooners have committed to overcome two years of adversity and return to national prominence with a spot on the podium in March.

That is the season blueprint for Oklahoma Head Coach Jack Spates in his 16th season at the helm. A three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year recipient, Spates might consider a breakthrough season a bigger feat than any other in his previous seasons. He and the Sooner staff are committed to getting the Oklahoma program back to the big stage, a place to which this tradi-tion-rich program is accustomed.

The feeling of optimism stems from seven Sooners returning from last year’s lineup, including three NCAA qualifiers in Joey Fio (125 pounds), Zack Bailey (141 pounds) and Will Rowe (149 pounds). The trio combined to win more than 70 percent of their matches from a year ago. Also back is redshirt freshman Jeff James, whose season competing at 174 pounds was cut short due to injury in 2008. No one on the team is looking forward to this season more as James eyes a podium finish in March.

Oklahoma lost a two-time All-American in Joel Flaggert, who eclipsed 100 wins in his Sooner career last year. Why is the coaching

staff not worried over the loss? Junior Eric Lapotsky, who transferred in from Bucknell, steps in as the projected starter at 197 pounds. In his freshman campaign, Lapotsky trumped several high-ranked wrestlers, including a win over the No. 1 seed at the NCAA.

Although there is experience, Rowe one of only two seniors on the squad. Cleveland State transfer and NCAA qualifier David Armstrong is also in his last year of competition, joining several Sooner 133-pounders hoping to earn the starting spot.

Armstrong is one of 13 newcomers added to this year’s roster, a class Spates rates highly in work ethic and ability to compete for starting positions. Included in the group is freshman Erich Schmidtke who looks to compete at 184 pounds. The Aberdeen, Wash., native compiled a 136-6 high school record en route to winning three state titles, in addition to being named champion at the highly esteemed “Beast of the East” championship in 2007.

The Sooner squad will look to build off late season success in matches last season, including a win over a top-five Oklahoma State team. Oklahoma’s 14 wins in 2007-08 were the most in four years, and there is belief that the 2008-09 squad can surpass that mark and meet the high expectations.

THE FAVORITE: JOEY FIOTHE CONTENDERS: JUSTIN FORREST AND BLAKE MANGUM

“With a year of hard work and tenacious battles under his belt, Joey Fio is ready to make a run at All-American honors. A late-season win over NCAA champion Paul Donahoe and a third-place Big 12 finish serve as proof of his ability. A relentless worker and talented technician, Fio must exercise discipline in making his weight if he is to realize his goals.

“Two talented freshmen will battle to challenge Fio. Justin Forrest is a Missouri state champion who captured the 119-pound Junior National Championship title this summer and Utah native Blake Mangum is a two-time state champion who earned All-America honors at the High School National Championships. Both show great promise and should bolster a weight that looks to be a strong one for the Sooners.”

THE FAVORITE: BRIAN SHELTONTHE CONTENDERS: J.R. ROMAN AND DAVID ARMSTRONG

“The Sooners have failed to qualify this weight for the NCAA Championships the last few seasons, but with two-year starter Brian Shelton, we have the talent to do so. A former two-time high school state champion with a black belt in judo, Shelton is extremely talented and big enough for the weight for the first year. The only question is whether he is willing to devote himself to greatness.

“Challenging Shelton will be spot starter J.R. Roman, who has made big strides and could contend at both 125 and 133 pounds, and Cleveland State transfer David Armstrong. Armstrong, who is entering his senior year, is an extremely athletic and explosive grappler who has the tools to be big-time. While the weight is a question mark, the talent is in place to be successful.”

THE FAVORITE: ZACK BAILEYTHE CONTENDER: SETH VERNON

“After capturing four Missouri state titles and a junior national championship, adversity put Zack Bailey flat on his back. After three shoulder surgeries, Bailey put together a complete season last year, placing second in the prestigious Midlands Tournament and third at the Big 12 Championships. After a spring and summer of hard work, the Kansas City, Mo., native is ready to take his place on the All-America stand in his sophomore season.

“Strong competition will come from Seth Vernon, a three-time Oklahoma state champion. Vernon’s relentless work ethic and commitment to technique have resulted in great progress. The coaching staff is optimistic about bringing home All-America honors, and it looks as if the confidence is justified.”

149 poundsTHE FAVORITE: WILL ROWETHE CONTENDERS: KYLE TERRY, MATT SANSONE AND DYLAN JOINER

“After grappling up a weight while two-time All-American Matt Storniolo finished his career, Will Rowe moved back to 149 pounds last year. The result

was a finish that saw him barely miss All-America honors after dominating a defending national runner-up. Rowe is determined to finish his career on the All-America stand, hopefully on top.

“A determined Kyle Terry will have something to say about that. This junior grappler was a national qualifier two years ago and boasts a diverse arsenal and a fierce competitiveness. The competition will be enhanced by former Texas champion Matt Sansone, along with the very impressive former high school state champion and All-American Dylan Joiner, slotted for a probable redshirt. This competition will ensure a strong weight in which the Sooners are confident of All-America honors.”

THE FAVORITES: CHAD TERRY AND SHANE VERNONTHE CONTENDER: KAYTON MARSHALL

“Last year’s starter, Chad Terry, made big progress in his inaugural starting campaign, upsetting two Big 12 opponents and finding a spot in the national rankings. He hopes to build on that foundation and bring home All-America honors. That goal will be greatly challenged by a talented and reinvigorated Shane Vernon. The former three-time high school state titlist worked diligently through the spring and summer with hopes of recapturing the starting slot and becoming an All-American himself. Virginia state champion Kayton Marshall is slotted for a probable redshirt.

“This is a weight where the Sooners have failed to qualify for the NCAA last year, but one in which they are justifiably hopeful of realizing that goal and more.”

THE FAVORITE: RYAN SMITH

“This is the Sooners’ thinnest weight and one in which their hopes are pinned on a talented but unproven redshirt freshman. Ryan Smith’s high school cre-dentials leave little doubt that he is up to the task. A three-time Oregon State champion, Smith placed second in the freestyle Junior Nationals and fourth in the Greco-Roman competition. He made big strides in his redshirt season but progress was slowed by a knee surgery last spring. Recently cleared by the medical staff, the Oregon native has resumed his dedicated and disciplined training with hopes to challenge for All-America honors.

“This weight is a question mark for the Sooners, but one in which we are hopeful we have the answer.”

174 poundsTHE FAVORITE: JEFF JAMESTHE CONTENDERS: STEVE NIJOKA AND AUSTIN SPIRES

“In the minds of the coaching staff, only injury stood between Jeff James and All-America honors last season. A redshirt freshman who took some serious whoopings early in the room, Jeff’s relentless determination to improve resulted in remarkable progress. The El Reno, Okla., native took some of the nation’s top-ranked wrestlers to the wire last season, including a last-second loss to the third-ranked grappler in a late dual. Unfortunately, Jeff’s season came to an abrupt end when he tore his posterior cruciate ligament in the next-to-last dual versus Cal Poly. After recovery, he has resumed his grueling work schedule and continues to make progress daily.

“Backing James up will be former Texas state champion Steve Nijoka, who has also improved significantly, along with one of the teams most determined grapplers, Houston, Texas, native Austin Spires.

“If the gods of health smile upon the Sooners, this should be a weight in which they garner All-America honors.”

THE FAVORITE: JOSH HINTON THE CONTENDERS: PAT FLYNN AND ERICH SCHMIDTKE

“The graduation of Josh Weitzel leaves a significant hole in the Sooner lineup. The talent is there but must step up in order to qualify the weight for nationals. The leading candidate might be junior Josh Hinton, a starter two years ago who significantly increased his commitment and work ethic. He will be challenged by Lehigh transfer Pat Flynn who boasts formidable talent but has struggled with injuries.

“The future, if not present, might belong to Erich Schmidtke. A three-time Washington state champion who also won the prestigious ‘Beast of the East’ tournament in 2007, the Aberdeen, Wash., native demonstrates the passion and work ethic to match his talent. If the Crimson and Cream are to challenge for national prominence, we need a man to emerge at this weight.”

THE FAVORITE: ERIC LAPOTSKYTHE CONTENDERS: KYLE BERGSTEDT AND KELDRICK HALL

“Normally, the loss of a two-time All-American would leave a gaping hole. The sting of Joel Flaggert’s graduation will be lessened significantly with the addi-tion of transfer Eric Lapotsky. The Pennsylvania native, whose best high school finish was fifth in the state improved dramatically in his time at Bucknell and especially in his redshirt season at OU. He has garnered wins over national contenders Max Askren, Hudson Taylor, Brent Jones and others. One of the hardest workers on the team, Eric continues to improve.

“Challenging Lapotsky will be former high school All-American Kyle Bergstedt and Texas strongman Keldrick Hall. The former was impressive in spring free-style competitions while the latter came from nowhere en route to winning

the Texas state championships during an unde-feated season. This is another weight in which the Sooners look to place a man on the All-America stand.”

THE FAVORITE: NATHAN FERNANDEZTHE CONTENDERS: JOE BACH AND ADAM BARNETTE

“In his inaugural campaign, Nathan Fernandez failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships. This disap-pointment was tempered by a season which saw him post 14 wins while taking several nationally ranked wrestlers to the wire.

“The year’s experience should make a big difference as will competition from two talented freshmen. Joe Bach flew under the radar as most thought he would pursue a football career. The 245-pound strongman posted two unde-feated seasons, capped by state championships, and was scored on only once as a senior. West Virginia runner-up titlist Adam Barnette is a bear of a man and has worked hard while making big strides. Hopefully, the competition will result in a national qualifier and contender in a weight that is important, but still in question.”

the scheduleAfter the Red/White scrimmage on Oct. 29 held on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla., the Sooners will open the season when they travel to Brockport, N.Y., for the annual Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Nov. 8.

The 19-match season will include eight home matches versus Central Oklahoma (Nov. 13), Oklahoma City (Nov. 20), Old Dominion (Nov. 23), Oklahoma State (Dec. 7), Maryland (Jan. 16), North Carolina State (Jan. 30), Missouri (Feb. 6) and Nebraska (Feb. 8).

In addition to traveling to the Brockport Classic, Oklahoma will participate in the Big 12/Pac-10 Challenge on Dec. 13, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where it will face Cal-Bakersfield, Cal-Fullerton and Cal Poly. The Lonestar Duals in Arlington, Texas, will match the Sooners against North Carolina, Stanford and Appalachian State on Jan. 3.

Other road contests will feature the Sooners at Chattanooga (Jan. 11), Arizona State (Jan. 18), Iowa State (Jan. 23), Michigan State (Feb. 15) and Oklahoma State (Feb. 22).

Seven teams the Sooners are pitted against this season finished in the top 25 at last year’s NCAA Championships (Nebraska, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Mis-souri, Stanford, Maryland and North Carolina State).

The Sooners will begin postseason competition at the Big 12 Championships held March 7, in Lincoln, Neb. The NCAA Championships will make a return trip to St. Louis, Mo., and are slated for March 19-21.
