KING GUSTAV II ADOLF: THE NAMESAKE OF GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE

Founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants, Gustavus Adolphus College bears the name of the famous Swedish king Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632). Known as the “Warrior King,” Gustav ascended the throne at the tender age of seventeen and reigned from 1611 to 1632. In that short time span, he became more popular and powerful than any king before him. King Gustav was known as a friend of the people and a strong proponent of education. He died in battle at Lutzen, Germany, as he led his troops in the Thirty Years War, fighting for his faith and securing the future of Protestantism.

Gustavus Adolphus College | 2008 Football Press Guide

For more than 140 years, Gustavus Adolphus College has been educating tomorrow’s leaders to reason and act responsibly through its educational quality, accessible facilities, spiritual identity, and economic value.

Quality is a word that finds its way into many colleges’ vocabularies. At Gustavus, quality is evident in its students, faculty, facilities, and programs, leading to recognition by a host of impartial critics. Forbes.com ranked Gustavus in the Top 20 percent of institutions in the country in its 2008 college report based on several factors, including the average amount of student debt and four-year graduation rate. In addition, The Princeton Review’s college ranking guidebook for 2009 cited Gustavus as having the tenth best food among all colleges and universities in the nation.

Gustavus students typically rank in the top third of their high school graduating class; over 35 percent rank in the upper 10 percent of their class. Continuing their achievement at Gustavus, students find a challenging academic atmosphere where professors—90 percent of whom have earned the highest degree in their field—teach all classes

(there are no graduate assistants) and serve as academic advisers. Collaborative learning is the norm, with exceptionally motivated students invited to conduct research independently or with a professor.

Top quality facilities complement educational quality. The National Review College Guide declares the two Gustavus science facilities to be “the envy of other small schools in its class,” while Schaefer Fine Arts Center houses the Anderson Theatre, acoustically perfect Björling Recital Hall, Kresge Dance Studio, a MIDI computerized composition lab, and plenty of practice rooms. The Bernadotte Library provides ample study space and access to literally millions of volumes through its holdings, the MnPALS system, and LEXIS-NEXIS. Computer facilities are vital no matter what a student’s major, and Gustavus provides direct network access from more than 400 public-access terminals, with all individual student residential rooms hardwired for full Ethernet connectivity.

Founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants, Gustavus has maintained its sense of spiritual identity through a daily service held in Christ Chapel (which many students choose to attend) and a one-course religion component built into the liberal arts core academic requirements. A Gustavus education challenges students to examine, develop, and strengthen their own spiritual and moral values, which for many students translates directly into service to others.

A number of factors combine to make Gustavus an outstanding economic value. Most importantly, Gustavus students graduate on time, with a four-year graduation rate of more than four times the national average. Moreover, Gustavus offers comprehensive financial assistance programs, including merit-based and need-based grants and scholarships.

Jay Schoenebeck is in his fifteenth season as the head coach of the Golden Gusties. He has compiled a mark of 68–72 overall and 59–61 in the MIAC. Schoenebeck’s squads have been ranked in the Division III’s Top Twenty-Five twice in the past nine seasons while finishing no

lower than fourth in the MIAC in seven of the last eleven years.

Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Schoenebeck was a four-year starter for the Golden Gusties at left halfback from 1976 until 1979. Schoenebeck earned National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-America honors as well as Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors in 1979, his senior season. His career totals included rushing for 2,471 yards on 416 carries and 31 touchdowns as well as catching 67 passes for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns. Schoenebeck ranks first in Gustavus football history in career touchdowns scored (37), first in points scored (224), fourth in all-purpose yards (3,945), and seventh in rushing (2,471).

Schoenebeck’s coaching career has spanned 25 years and has included coaching stints in NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions. Schoenebeck started his coaching career with the Gusties, where he was the tight ends and receivers coach from 1981 through 1985 under former head coach Dennis Raarup. His next stop was the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he was a graduate assistant and volunteer coach from June of 1985 until July of 1988 under the late Dave McClain, Jim Hilles, and Don Morton. While at Wisconsin, Schoenebeck earned a master’s degree in educational administration. Upon completing his degree at Wisconsin, Schoenebeck returned to Gustavus to serve as offensive coordinator for head coach Steve Byrne. He held that position from August of 1988 until December of 1990. Schoenebeck then accepted a position with Mike Daly at South Dakota State University where he stayed until February of 1994. At South Dakota State University, his responsibilities included coordinating all special-teams play, directing the wide receivers, tight ends, and quarterbacks, arranging all team travel plans, and monitoring player eligibility. He accepted his first head coaching assignment in February of 1994 when he was named the sixteenth head coach in the history of Gustavus football.

2008 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2008 Gustavus Adolphus College football team

looks to move back into its traditional spot among the top four in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings after finishing in a tie for fifth a year ago with a league mark of 3-5. Head Coach Jay Schoenebeck will rely on a veteran defense early in the season, while the offense looks to fill big holes at the quarterback and running back positions. Schoenebeck will build the squad around 34 returning letterwinners, 19 of which were starters (eight on defense, six on offense, and five on special teams), and a large and talented recruiting class. The defense will be anchored by captains Ted Aleckson (senior, lineman) and Joe Welch (junior, safety), while the offense will be led by senior captains Jared Thelemann (guard) and Chad Arlt (wide receiver). The Gusties open the season on the road with a non-conference contest at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, September 13.

The Gustavus defensive unit will benefit from the experience of eight returning starters including the return of all four secondary starters. Strong safety Joe Welch (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), who finished second on the team and fifth in the conference with 76 tackles in 2007, leads one of the most veteran secondaries in the MIAC. Senior cornerbacks Ethan Armstrong (Wheaton, Minn.) and Isaac Perry (Wabasha, Minn.) and junior free safety Hamada Omar (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) will join Welch as returning starters in the secondary along with veteran T.J. Ridley (Jr., Edina, Minn) who played regularly last season. Armstrong and Omar both finished with 60 tackles a year ago.

On the line, defensive coordinator Brian Bergstrom welcomes back three starters in senior Ted Aleckson (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) and juniors Christian Vanek (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Brian Berglund (Lauderdale, Minn./Roseville). Vanek finished second on the team in tackles for loss with 7.5 and sacks with 3.5, while Berglund added 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Additional help on the defensive line will come from Mike May (Jr., Le Sueur, Minn.), Greg White (So., Oakdale, Minn.), and Scott Wilkie (So., Andover, Minn.)

The biggest question on defense is who will replace all-conference middle linebacker Jared Sieling. Senior

Gustavus Adolphus College | 2008 Football Press Guide 6

2008 SEASON PREVIEWPete Keegan (Apple Valley, Minn.) and junior Tony Palma (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) both started at outside linebacker last season. Palma was the fifth leading tackler for the Gusties during the 2007 campaign with 59 stops, while Keegan tallied 31 tackles. Other players expected to contribute at the linebacker position are Zach Lundquist (So., Pelican Rapids, Minn.), Paul Stommes (So., Richmond, Minn.), and converted defensive back Dustin Kammerer (So., Watertown, Minn.).

On offense, Gustavus returns six starters including wide receivers Chad Arlt (Sr., St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and Cody Sukalski (So., Blue Earth, Minn.), H-Back Cameron Maurer (Jr., Morgan, Minn.), and offensive linemen Kevin Geurink (Jr., Rothschild, Wis.), Michael Klayum (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), and Jared Thelemann (Sr., Kilkenny, Minn.).

Pre-season All-America wide receiver Chad Arlt had a breakout 2007 season en route to setting new Gustavus single-season records in catches (100) and yards (1,294). His size and speed has helped establish him as one of the most prolific wide receivers in Gustie history as he needs 27 yards to surpass Ryan Hoag as the all-time leader in receiving yards. Sukalski joins Arlt on the outside after a solid campaign last season where he recorded 25 catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns. The Gusties will have a deep receiving corps with experienced receivers such as senior John Retka (Shoreview, Minn./Totino Grace) and junior Blake Noennig (Norwood-Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran).

Adam Lukes (Sr., Watertown, Minn.) and Ray Wilson (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) return in the backfield for offensive coordinator Tom Brown. Lukes had 57 carries for 235 yards and one touchdown, while Wilson had 29 carries for 117 yards and one touchdown. Both seniors will vie for the starting running back position with Mike Wubbena (So., Fairmont, Minn.), a transfer from Augustana, who is expected to make an immediate impact in the lineup.

The Gusties will have a new look at quarterback for the first time in four years due to the graduation of all-conference quarterback Jordan Stolp. The top candidate for the starting job is junior Jordan Becker (Blue Earth, Minn.), who served as a backup to Stolp for two seasons learning the offensive scheme. Becker will have an experienced offensive

line protecting him as all-conference guard Jared Thelemann, three-year starter Michael Klayum, and junior Kevin Geurink, who stepped into a starting role last season. The line looks to provide Becker with ample time to throw and open holes for the running backs.

Special teams return all-conference kicker John Ostertag (Sr., Walker, Minn.), all-conference punt returner Ethan Armstrong, as well as punter Matt Knutson (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) and kick returners Cody Sukalski and Joe Welch. Ostertag led the conference with ten field goals on eleven attempts, while converting 26 of 31 point after attempts. Armstrong, one of the top punt returners in the MIAC, set a Gustavus single-season record with 295 punt return yards on 29 punt returns last season. In addition, Armstrong is approaching the all-time punt return record of 653 yards held by Zach Zimmer.

Gustavus will play a challenging schedule that includes non-conference road contests against Coe College and Pacific Lutheran University. The Gusties have four home games this season against Hamline, St. Thomas, Augsburg, and Concordia. Coach Schoenebeck feels the schedule provides the types of challenges that make a team better and will help bring out the best in the team to get back into the top four of the MIAC standings. “We see ourselves as a top tier team. In order to get there, we need to get back to playing disciplined, physical football. It will be a point of emphasis in training camp,” said Schoenebeck.
