Last Time Out: The Gustavus men’s basketball team opened the season with a tightly contested 75-73 loss at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul last Saturday. The Gusties held a six-point lead with 2:26 remaining in the game, but the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take a 74-73 lead with 37 seconds left in the game. Gustavus had an opportunity to tie the game with the last shot as time expired, but it bounced off the rim and UNW escaped with the victory.

Brody Ziegler (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) was perfect from the field as he went 9-for-9 for a team-high 19 points. He also hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds. Sergio Najera (Sr., New Prague, Minn.) and Riley Sharbono (Fy., Marshall, Minn.) also reached double-digit points with 13 and 12, respectively.

Northwestern started the game with the hot hand, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes. Gustavus responded with six unanswered points to come within one, but the Eagles never let go of the advantage in the first half. The Gusties and Eagles played within five points of each other for the remainder of the first half and UNW led 32-29 at halftime. Gustavus shot 36.7-percent (11-30) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to 52.2 field goal percentage (12-23) by the Eagles.

The first 10 minutes of the second half was more of the same as UNW played with a slim advantage, leading by as much as five points (42-37) at the 16:14 mark. Gustavus took its first lead of the game at 54-53 with 9:10 left on the clock as Ziegler put in a layup. Northwestern regained the lead 30 seconds later, but the Gusties then went on an 8-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 62-56 lead. Northwestern continued to cut into the lead, but the Gusties had an answer and led 71-65 with 2:26 on the clock. At that point, the Eagles took back control of the game and held the Gusties to just two points the rest of the way.

Gustavus shot 63.3-percent from the floor in the second half, but the Eagles held the advantage with a 65.4-percent shooting percentage in the final 20 minutes. The Gusties out-rebounded the Eagles 33-25 and committed fewer turnovers, 9-11, but were unable to come away with the win.

Series Snapshot: Friday’s matchup between Gustavus and Buena Vista is the 16th all-time meeting between the two teams. Gustavus leads the all-time series 9-6, but BVU has won two of the last three meetings, including a 76-73 win last season.

Saturday’s matchup between Gustavus and Simpson is the third meeting between the two teams. Gustavus leads the all-time series 2-0. The Gusties and Storm have met in each of the past two seasons with Gustavus winning 83-68 in 2013 and 66-58 in 2014.

About The Beavers: Buena Vista enters Friday night’s game with a 0-1 record after losing its season opener 109-104 to Nebraska Wesleyan last Sunday in Storm Lake, Iowa. Eight Beavers reached double digit points in the shootout, led by guard Bobby Ivey with 18 points. Guard Nick Clark posted a double double with 11 points and a team-high 11 assists. Robby Burke led the Beavers with nine rebounds off the bench. Prior to the season, junior forward Kennedy Drey was named to the D3hoops.com Preseason Honorable Mention All-America Team.

About The Storm: Simpson enters the weekend with a 1-0 record after defeating Graceland 87-69 on Monday in Indianola, Iowa. Austin Turner scored 16 points, while first year Ben Rajewski led the three-point barrage, shooting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Dillon Gretzky led the Storm down on the blocks with a team-high six rebounds.

Last Time They Met, Gusties vs. Beavers: The Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Nov. 16, 2014 to Buena Vista University by a final score of 76-73 at Siebens Fieldhouse. With time expiring, the BVU’s Cole Darrow lofted up a three-pointer that banked in to beat the buzzer and give the home team its first victory of the 2014-15 season.

“The score and ending result was indicative of the kind of game it was,” said head coach Mark Hanson. “This is obviously a tough way to lose, but we will learn from it and make it a valuable lesson.”

The game was close throughout, with neither team ever leading by more than eight, and at halftime, the two squads were knotted up at 40 points apiece. The Gusties started the second half with a bang, going on an eight point run, and with 17:20 remaining in the game, led 50-42. However, the Beavers then went on an eight point run of their own and four minutes later, the score was again tied, this time at 50. From that point, the Gusties led by as many as four,

with Buena Vista not leading by more than two until the game-ending shot.

With 19 seconds remaining in the game, Gustavus came up with a loose ball offensive rebound and Martin Fedderson was able to put in a layup that tied the score at 73. The Beavers then came back up the floor and got the ball to Darrow, who made his move and banked in a shot from the top of the key at the buzzer to seal the deal for Buena Vista.

“We didn’t handle their penetration very well and gave up too many easy baskets from their guards getting in the lane,” said Hanson. “We hurt ourselves with some fouls and allowing them to get into the bonus early in the second half.”

Brody Ziegler led the way for Gustavus by going 9-of-14 from the floor to score 20 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Fellow big man Peter Kruize put up 12 points, four rebounds and three assists and Isaac Tap and Fedderson each had 10 points and four assists for the Gusties. Darrow led the way for the Beavers with 22 points and five rebounds.

Last Time They Met, Gusties vs. Storm: The Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with a 66-58 victory over Simpson College on Nov. 15 at Cowles Fieldhouse. Gustavus found itself in a small hole early, but managed to climb out and build a 16-point (40-24) halftime lead and would never look back on its way to the win. Chad Poppen poured in 13 points and grabbed seven boards to pace the Gusties.

A pair of runs in the first half aided Gustavus in opening up its halftime lead. A Chris Narum three-pointer 6:55 into the game sparked a 10-2 run that was capped off by a Martin Fedderson layup to give the Gusties an 18-12 lead with 9:57 remaining in the opening half.

Less than a minute later, a jumper by junior forward Brody Ziegler ignited a 14-4 run that would put Gustavus in front 32-18 with 3:11 remaining in the first. From there, the Gusties would hold on to take the 40-24 lead to the break.

Following halftime, Simpson slowly but surely began to chip away at the Gustavus lead, but did not cut the lead below 10 until the 11:43 mark in the second half. Then, a Dillon Gretzky three-pointer keyed a 7-0 Simpson run that would cut the Gustie lead to 46-45 with 7:57 remaining in the game. For the next few minutes, Gustavus and Simpson went back and forth, with the Storm even grabbing a one point advantage with 6:20 to play. But Gustavus would hold its own and go on a 10-1 run that put them back in front and the visitors led 59-50 with 3:08 remaining, a lead that would prove to hold for the remainder of the game, and Gustavus eventually secured the 66-58 victory.

Gustavus shot just under 35 percent from the floor compared with Simpson’s 44.2 percent, however, the Gusties out rebounded the Storm 46-34 and also made the most of their free-throws, which proved to be the difference in the game. Gustavus shot 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the charity stripe, while Simpson shot just 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) on free throws.

Isaac Tapp scored 14 points and added three assists for Gustavus, while Peter Kruize came off the bench to net 12 points and pull down three rebounds. Gary Cooper also added seven points and grabbed nine boards.

Gusties Take To Hardwood For 107th Season: The 2015-16 season represents the 107th season of men’s basketball at Gustavus. Captains Log: As is tradition, captains are selected annually to serve as leaders of their team. This year, four players are given the honor of serving as captain, as the Gusties named seniors Chad Poppen, Gary Cooper, Chris Narum and Brian Jacobs as team captains.

Home Grown: The 2015-16 Gustavus men’s basketball roster features 15 players and all but two are natives of Minnesota. The two player who hail from outside the Land of 10,000 Lakes are senior Gary Cooper, who is a native of Detroit, Michigan, and sophomore AJ Hatchett, who comes from Powder Springs, Georgia. Cooper and Hatchett are just two of 11 players to come through the Gustavus men’s basketball program who reside outside the state of Minnesota in the last 16 years.

Meet The Gustavus Coaching Staff: Head coach Mark Hanson is in his 26th season at the helm of the Gustavus men’s basketball program. During his tenure, Hanson has directed the team to seven MIAC championships, 22 MIAC Playoff appearances, and 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season. With 468 career wins, Hanson is the all-time winningest coach in Gustavus men’s basketball history.

Assistant coach Justin DeGrood is in his fourth season as the lead assistant for the Gustie men’s basketball team. Primarily working with the defense, DeGrood returns to Gustavus after serving as an assistant coach at Bethel from 2010 to 2013. A 2007 Gustavus graduate, DeGrood played for head coach Mark Hanson during his tenure on the hill. Following his graduation, Justin made his way east, where he worked for Jostens and volunteered as a high school and college coach in Boston.

Primarily dealing with game preparation and recruiting, Jeff Fish is in his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball team. Prior to joining the Gustavus staff, Fish was an assistant coach for Bethany Lutheran College from 2007-2009.

Mark Hanson is entering his 26th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball program in 2015. During that time, Hanson has directed the team to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season.

In the 2010-11 season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an 89-78 win over Saint Mary’s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Division III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, as becomes just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau.

Hanson, who has compiled a 468-216 overall record at Gustavus, including a 354-146 record in the MIAC, has won seven MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 29 players who have garnered 49 All-Conference honors, four MIAC Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached one Jostens’ Award Finalist (Trevor Wittwer, 2008), which recognizes the top Division III men’s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.

Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection.

A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master’s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program director at the college.
