STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

TheKentucky rifle team calls Nutter Training Center its home forstrength and conditioning. The complex is under the direction of coachChad Hutsko and features a variety of free weight equipment, which

complements the training philosophy of the Shively staff.

The primary focus of the facility is the development of core strength usingground-based, multi-joint lifting through use of the Olympic lifts. The core ofthe athlete’s body also is trained and complemented with a variety of lifts, including squats, lunges, plyometrics, presses, pulls, trunk rotation andabdominal exercise. Through the combination of these exercises, the athletesare better able to reach their goals.

With the help of a staff nutritionist, the Shively staff also helps educate theathletes on nutrition and supplement awareness.

The rifle squad trains together at Shively, promoting team chemistry andteamwork. Through this set-up, teams work on mental toughness, attackinggoals and maintaining a positive attitude, keeping everyone moving toward acommon goal.

“I am extremely excited to have Chad Hutsko working with our program again this year. Hehas a pulse on what the team needs and realizes that we are not trying to build them intohulks, but concentrating on building core strength. Even though it is pain, blood, sweat andtears, the team really enjoys the workout sessions because Coach Hutsko keeps them motivatedand highly productive.”

>> Head Coach Harry Mullins

CHAD HUSTKOChad Hutsko is in his fourth year as Kentucky's headstrength and conditioning coach for the rifle team. He alsoserves as the assistant strength and conditioning coach forthe nationally-ranked football team, helping the Wildcats toone of the most successful three-year runs in the history ofthe program.

He served as a volunteer coach in thePitt weight room during the summers of 1996 and 1997 before being hired as theassistant strength coach in 1998. In his four seasons at Pitt (1998-01), thePanthers advanced to two bowl games. CENTER FOR ACADEMIC & TUTORIAL SERVICES

TheUniversity of Kentucky has made a commitment to put the student-athlete at the heart of theprogram. The cornerstone of that commitment lies in the academic success of the University’s stu-dent-athletes. And at UK, that success stems from the resources within the Ohio Casualty Group’s

Center for Academic and Tutorial Services (CATS).

UK opened CATS in 1981, the nation’s first academic center dedicated exclusively to student-athletes. Overthe years, as the services offered by CATS have grown, so did the need for additional space.

As a result, UK built a new facility - the Ohio Casualty Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, thanks toa one-million dollar grant from the Ohio Casualty Insurance Group. The Ohio Casualty Center opened in1998 at a total cost of $2.4 million.

Much of the credit for UK’s academic success goes to the Athletics Association’s academic support system -the Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, or simply, “CATS.”

CATS, CONSTRUCTED IN MEMORIAL COLISEUM, INCLUDES:

>> 20,000 square feet of space - more than double the size of the formerCATS facility

>> A computer room housing 35 computers

>> A study area which accommodates 90-100 people

>> 24 tutoring rooms

>> A career development and life skills resource center

>> A community outreach office

>> Offices for the staff.

Certainly, a facility is a good start, but any program - especially in academics - is only as good as the peoplewho run it. And UK is fortunate to have outstanding leaders in its academics support system.

Bob Bradley, Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, oversees the CATS program. Bradley wasnamed National Academic Advisor of the Year in 1989 and 1992. In 2000 he was selected as the CHAMPSLife Skills Coordinator of the Year by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors Association.

MITCH BARNHART, ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

When he arrived in 2002, Barnhart’s first move was to totally support all 22varsity sports with the maximum number of scholarships and coaches, along with the facilities, equipment and support staff needed to make thoseteams successful.

The commitment to fully fund every sport produced never-before-seensuccesses in UK athletics, with first-ever Southeastern Conferencechampionships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis.

Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround has been in football, whereBarnhart’s hire of Rich Brooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in threeconsecutive years, the first time that has been accomplished in UK’s 117seasons in the sport.

In order to make the dreams a reality, Barnhart spearheaded record-breaking growth in philanthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehensivemulti-media rights agreement.

Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes is evident by his individualinteraction and dedication to provide the support services necessary to

meet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than $1.5 million annually onits nationally renowned Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. Healso began the CATSPYs, an annual awards program that honors the bestof UK Athletics.

Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include the UKAthletics Hall of Fame and the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility thatincludes new practice and administrative space for a variety of sports.

Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fieldsof competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financialneeds, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 million annualcontribution to the University’s scholarshipprogram, a contribution that is being increased to$1.7 million this year.

Social responsibility in the Commonwealth ofKentucky is a priority for Barnhart, who has beenextremely active in community service andencourages the UK athletics staff to do the same.

Not content with past successes, Barnhart’sambitious course for the future was revealed withhis recent announcement of the “15x15x15” plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference ornational championships and rank among theNCAA’s top 15 athletic programs by 2015 – all ofwhich would represent unprecedentedachievements for UK Athletics – while continuingto expand UK Athletics’ service to the localcommunity and commonwealth of Kentucky.Another goal of the initiative is a cumulative 3.0grade-point average for UK’s 500 student-athletes.

Barnhart arrived at Kentucky from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (1998-2002)as athletics director. Before his term at OSU, heworked in athletics administration posts atTennessee (1986-98), Southern MethodistUniversity (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San

Diego State (1982-1983).

Barnhart, 50, is a native of Kansas City, Kan. He received his bachelor’sdegree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1981 and a masters in sportsadministration from Ohio University in 1982.

2009-10 PREVIEW

“Entering every season, the expectations are always the same,” Mullinsexplained. “Win the NCAA Championships, win the Great American RifleConference and push every athlete to be an All-American.”

Mullins, who is entering is 23rd year at the helm of the UK rifle program, led the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the NCAA Championships ayear ago, their ninth consecutive season finishing in the top-10 at theNCAA Championships.

“To finish last season in second place at the NCAA Championships wasbittersweet,” Mullins detailed. “To be in a position to win on the final dayand coming up short is a difficult way to end the season.”

Coming into the 2009-10 season, Kentucky has a clear goal: improveeverything.

“Our biggest goal for theseason is to improve the teamfrom top to bottom and getour numbers consistent,”Mullins stated. “We havegood talent coming in and astrong senior class to lead us.”

UK is lead by its four seniorsLeslie Angeli, ThomasCsenge, Ashley Jackson andJennifer Pason.

“Tom brings enthusiasm, knowledge and passion tothe team,” Mullins said. “Heis a champion and we reallywant to max out every bit ofpotential he has this season. He can break lots of recordsthis season or at least will bevery close to doing so.”

For Mullins, the term “finish” really fits this year for the senior class.

“We recruited these seniors to win national championships and we’ve fallenshort so far,” Mullins said. “For them to finish what they started theirfreshman year is key and the number one goal.”

The Wildcats return juniors Sarah Broeker and Logan Fox. Mullins says it’stime for them to “make a move.”

“Sarah and Logan have learned a lot the past two years,” Mullins said. “Bothhave put up big numbers and shown sparks of promise, now they need toclose the deal and start preparing for being seniors. We will see goodperformances and good things out of them this year. They will also gain

valuable experience that will lead them into their senior year.”

Megan English and Ethan Settlemires are Kentucky’s two sophomores and ayear ago the duo stepped into the UK lineup immediately and became someof the top freshmen in the nation.

“Typically in our sport, it’s very hectic being a freshman and balancingeverything between life, school and rifle,” Mullins said. “Megan and Ethannow have that first year of school complete. Both will play an integral partin producing some of those 590s in air rifle and 580s in smallbore whenpostseason time comes.”

UK’s incoming freshmen feature acclaimed recruits Katie Fretts andHeather Greathouse and two Kentucky natives, James Jasis and Stacy

Wheatley. The four makeup one of the top incomingclasses in the nation.

“You have to take theseathletes coming in and shapethem in the direction theywant to go,” Mullins stated.“All are very shapeable andvery receptive to coachingwith a strong competitivedesire. Katie and Heather haveshown strong promise andJames and Stacy have tons ofheart being from Kentucky.

“It’s going to be a tough taskfor this freshmen class to liveup to the senior class. It ispossible, though, thatthrough hard work anddoing the right things theycan be just as good as theseniors at certain points or at

the end of their career.”

As always, UK will play a challenging schedule, featuring tests from Army,Murray State, Nebraska, Texas Christian and West Virginia, while shootingin the very competitive Great American Rifle Conference, a year afterwinning the regular-season and conference championships.

“The main preparation of the schedule is to get us in the mindset tocompete against one person and one thing. That one person is ourselvesand that one thing is the course,” Mullins stated. “Being able to go tocompete against quality programs helps prepare and teach us how to put upnumbers anywhere, anyhow, under any circumstance, against anyopponent.”

Representing Kentucky athletics is a responsibility that carries championshipexpectations each and every season. The UK rifle program is no stranger toexpectations of excellence and head coach Harry Mullins embraces them.

2008-09 SEASON IN REVIEW

Make no mistake, the 2008-09 Kentucky team penned another impressivechapter in the lore of dominance by the Wildcat rifle squad. It marked theschool’s third all-time runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships and isan addition to a legend that includes 16 top-10 finishes in the last 17 years. But it wasn’t precisely what Mullins had in mind for his team.

“We had an excellent season last year, but we are looking forward to takingthe next step,” Mullins said. “We are going to have to work very hard thisseason to make sure those points come down on our side.”

UK opened the 2008-09 season with a solid performance against OhioState, as the Wildcats charted a 4634-4564 victory. Freshmen MeganEnglish and Ethan Settlemires posted impressive scores in their first-careermatches in the starting lineup. Settlemires posted a match-high 199 inprone smallbore to finish with a 576. English recorded a 572 in smallboreand 586 in air rifle.

Kentucky then traveled far west to Fairbanks, Alaska, to take on two-timeNCAA Champion Alaska-Fairbanks. Despite a match-high 592 score in airrifle from junior Ashley Jackson, the Wildcats suffered their first defeat ofthe season by a score of 4651-4635. Though the loss was UK’s first in adual-meet match in the last three seasons, Mullins felt like the Wildcatswould be able to learn from the experience to help the team down the road.

“Overall, I felt like the team worked hard, we just did not have the rightmindset going into the second half of the match,” Mullins said followingthat match. “It seemed like we were too tight and that got us in smallbore. This was one of our lowest smallbore scores in the past few years.”

Kentucky stayed in the Last Frontier to take on Nebraska, rebounding witha 4670-4606 victory, led by All-American Tom Csenge’s match-high 1177total score. He totaled a club-best 198 in smallbore prone, as well as teamhighs in standing (192) and kneeling (197).

The Wildcats then returned home for a trio of matches, coming away withfour victories, including wins against UT-Martin, Army, Memphis andWest Virginia. Junior Leslie Angeli tallied a personal-best 589 in air rifle tolead Kentucky to the victory against the Mountaineers.

The Wildcats closed out their 2008 fall season with a trip to Fort Worth,Texas, site of the 2009 NCAA Championships to face TCU. Led byJackson’s 594 in air rifle and Csenge’s match-high 1169 overall, Kentuckyposted a 4647-4636 win against the Horned Frogs.

UK welcomed in-state foe Murray State to Lexington to commence the2009 part of the team’s schedule. Numerous Wildcats charted personal-bestscores to help the team to its eighth consecutive win and help get the teamoff to a strong start during the spring slate.

Kentucky was without three of its top shooters, who were participating in

international events, and needed to win consecutive matches to secure itsthird conference championship since 2003 in Oxford, Miss. The Wildcatsposted a 4626-4565 victory against Ole Miss, putting them one win awayfrom the Great American Rifle Conference Championship. One day later,Kentucky used a 4615-4515 win against North Carolina State to capturethe league championship.

“I am really excited for the team,” Mullins said after his team clinchedthe league title. “This was one of our goals that we set out with last year,to go undefeated in the conference. It just shows the hard work the kidsare putting in to come out and shoot good numbers without three of ourbig guns.”

The Wildcats returned home to the friendly confines of Barker Hall to playhost to an NCAA qualifier in Lexington. UK topped its previous season-best performance of 4670 against Nebraska in Fairbanks, Alaska. Csengeand Andrew Roland helped spark the Wildcats first team.

“I was really pleased, we are on that path where we want to be as far asmoving forward and steadily improving,” Mullins said. “We got a couple ofreally big scores on the first team in Tom and Andrew’s performances andthat really sparked us. We left some points off the board and will need towork to continue to shoot scores in the 4670s.”

Kentucky made a return trip to Oxford and came away with its secondtrophy of the season. Just a month removed from claiming the GARCregular-season championship with an undefeated regular season, theWildcats posted a 4650 total score to win the GARC Tournament.

Kentucky had to withstand a strong push from West Virginia in the air rifleportion of the match Sunday, after UK shot a match-leading 2310 insmallbore Saturday. The Wildcats finished second to the Mountaineers inair rifle Sunday, posting a 2340, second to WVU’s 2350 in air rifle. WestVirginia finished second with a 4645 overall score.

Back to Fort Worth for the NCAA Championships, Kentucky was unableto emerge with its third championship of the season. After the Fridaysmallbore competition, UK sat one point shy of the first-place team,Jacksonville State. The Wildcats were led in smallbore by Jackson, whonarrowly lost the individual smallbore national title by .001 of a point.

Kentucky’s second-place finish bettered its fifth-place finish the year before. It was, indeed, another fine chapter in the Wildcat annals, but in 2009-10,Mullins is looking to write the epic tale with his team taking the next step.

Perhaps no one knows the importance of precision better than Kentucky rifle coachHarry Mullins. In the sport where the smallest measurement makes the biggestdifference, the 2008-09Wildcats came up just short at the NCAA Championships,

dropping their bid for the program’s first national title by just five points.
