WINDOWSEpIscopal HIgH scHool June 2010
From the Head of SchoolSpring at School is bittersweet, as we conclude our time with one generation of students and begin to prepare for the next that comes to us fresh and ready next August. This was a particularly moving time for Kristin and me, as several members of this graduating class were intimately involved in the recruitment and hiring process that brought us to Houston and Episcopal High School. Thank you, class of 2010, for all you’ve given our community in your time with us!
Inside this edition of Windows you will find a listing of all the School’s year-end awards including those announced at our Honors Chapels, senior banquet, and commencement. It is wonderful to witness the wide array of talent on display every day at EHS and to know that while we single out a few students, the honors accrue to the many. Of course, none of this would be possible without our fine faculty and staff as exemplified by this year’s Marc F. Adler Faculty Award recipient, Science Teacher Eric avera. As at the end of every year, of course, we also celebrate those teachers who have faithfully served EHS but who are leaving the School’s employ. Two of our staff members leaving this summer warrant special recognition: laura sohns and Joann Held. Laura is a founding faculty member and long-time teacher and college counselor, and Joanne has served the community since 1989 in several offices on campus, culminating in her time at the reception desk in the Convent. We celebrate their departures knowing that we will miss them greatly. Our thanks to both.
Long gone are the days of schools like ours closing and locking their gates at the start of summer only to reopen them at the start of class in the fall. Within these pages you’ll find a brief listing of all that is happening on campus this summer, in addition, of course, to the regular maintenance necessary to keep our 35 acres and eight buildings in top condition. Please know that all School offices are open for business during the summer hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. except for the Independence Day holiday, and there are wonderful opportunities for EHS students and others to participate in organized activities or get a jump on the college admissions process. Or, simply stop by to say hello. We look forward to seeing you!
C. Edward Smith, Head of School

By Patricia Houser, EHS College Counselor
As summer approaches, families across the country will begin planning extensive trips in search of the perfect college. When building these trips, families often turn to the illustrious college ranking publications, sorting the “best” colleges from the rest.
In the world of college admission, these glossy publications are commonly known as “Swimsuit Editions.” Simply put: they sell. College rankings are cash cows for the publishers, trusted by consumers, but dismissed by nearly all educators. It is no surprise that as a school’s ranking improves, the application volume grows as well, allowing the school to become more selective. It’s a win-win for the colleges that rank well and those who rank them but it makes the process of college admission more difficult for you to navigate. Before you, too, become overly concerned with college rankings, be a smart consumer and educate yourself on what’s behind those rankings. The methodology behind the infamous US News and World Report College Rankings is public information, but few consumers take the time to do their research before picking up a copy. You might find the “numbers” behind the numbers somewhat shocking:
The largest singular component of the overall ranking is the Peer Assessment rating. College Presidents weigh in on other institutions. Of course, he or she will give his or her institution the best rating, while giving direct competitors the lowest, and making an educated guess on the others. It’s interesting to note that the Peer Assessment has taken on a bit of circular motion. When filling out the survey, college presidents often refer to past rankings. In effect, a good rank means a good reputation assessment, which in turn assures a good rank, which in turn assures another good reputation, etcetera. Graduation/Retention Rates and Faculty Resources both contribute significantly to the overall ranking. The former is mostly legitimate while the latter deals with numbers that can be easily manipulated. One could argue as well that the methodology
behind this component does not accurately measure the quality of the classroom experience at all. Faculty Compensation carries the most weight, and the ranking does not take into consideration issues such as cost of living. Does the paycheck truly measure the quality of the professor? When a school cannot manipulate its numbers to make faculty salaries look better, they increase them, often through tuition hikes. Class size is also an important factor in this portion of the ranking. It is important to understand, however, that schools play the rankings game and make their small classes smaller, causing already large classes to swell further. This will give the institution a better ranking without hiring any additional faculty or adding courses to the catalog. Other contributors to the overall ranking include Student Selectivity, Financial Resources, Alumni Giving, and Graduation Rate Performance. There are ways to manipulate each of these as well, especially selectivity. Did you know that when you visit some Admission Offices and sit in their well-decorated lobbies to “update your personal information” you are actually filling out Part I of their application? Congrats! You have just become an applicant.
As a smart consumer, you should ask yourself a few questions before picking up that Swimsuit Edition, as alluring as it may be. Does a better ranking mean a better fit for you as a student? Does a jump in rankings reflect true change in the classroom and on the campus?
