T AN ADVANCE PRESENTATION of Brio-
ni’s new spring collection in Milan last summer, the Ital-
ian luxury brand made a big deal out of men’s formalwear.
Brioni master tailor Angelo Petrucci worked alongside stu-
dents from Britain’s Royal College of Art who, using little
more than their imaginations, suggested ways to update the
modern dinner jacket. Although the results were often far-
fetched—including plumes of rooster feathers springing from
lapels, and blue sleeves and a purple shawl collar on a gray
jacket—the exercise proved that formal dressing doesn’t nec-
essarily have to be a case study in black and white.
The actual Brioni collection next season includes such for-
mal options as a grayish-brown, micro-jacquard wool smok-
ing jacket with contrasting chocolate-brown silk lapels, and a

F U R N I T U R E > Fendi Casa takes its leather seriously
A Sofa to Seduce

BY DISTANCING ITSELF from Fendi’s successful apparelcollection, Fendi Casa is drawing inspiration from con-temporary design rather than its signature accessories.“We are using the same materials and workmanship, but in an entirely new way,” says Alberto Vignatelli, chief of Club House Italia, whose team of designersproducing the collection consists of craftsmen ratherthan couturiers. “This isn’t about a continually revolv-ing fashion—this is about creating a permanent life-style for the home, whether it’s a Manhattan loft or aTuscan villa.”
Fendi Casa’s furniture collection, which debuted atthe Milan furniture fair in spring, is a seductive exercisein sinuous curves and sensual textures that dominateeverything from the double-faced chenille armchairsto the nabuk leather beds. “Fendi Casa expresses thestyle of desire,” says Vignatelli. “These are beautifulthings to surround oneself with that give pleasure.”
The flushed-pink Eros sofa (below), one of the col-lection’s signature pieces, is draped in crocodile-embossed leather that tapers around every refinedcurve. The raised, light metal frame gives it poisedbuoyancy, while a removable backrest affords a range ofuses. The collection’s leather color palate extends toruby red, cognac, camel, hot chocolate, safari, black andoptic white, providing an opulent backdrop for thegeometric shapes.
Already established internationally, Fendi Casa’s firstU.S. showroom is set to open this month in the centerof Miami’s design district. The 6,800-square-foot spacewill function as the company’s stateside headquartersin addition to serving as a petting zoo for the skins andpelts that embellish such accessories as carpets, cush-ions, sheets and duvets. Each piece of furniture ismarked with a silver plate indicating its authenticityand serial edition. SAMANTHA BROOKS

We photographed “Hollywood’s original brow maven” Valerie Sarnelle’s home for Luxury Home magazine back in September. Her bathroom was the focus of the spa issue for the magazine’s March issue. The lighting was so amazing in this bathroom, one can only imagine the stray hairs one could nd on one’s brow. The nal image ran with the story as well as on the cover.more»
