Designed by world-renowned golf architect Tom Fazio, the $2.4 million Warren-Greene Golf Center sits on 14 acres of land overlooking the ETSU campus. Named in honor of longtime ETSU men's golf coach Fred Warren and ETSU golf supporter William B. Greene, Jr., the Warren-Greene Golf Center includes six target greens, two bent-grass greens (one for putting and one for short-game work), three tee areas, a fairway bunker and four greenside bunkers. The accompanying 3,300-square-foot, two-story building, designed by Ken Ross Architects of Johnson City, Tenn., contains coaches' offices, meeting rooms, the Hal Morrison Hall of Fame room, players' lounge, two indoor hitting bays, and an observation deck. Without a doubt, the Warren-Greene Golf Center provides ETSU players with one of the best on-campus practice facilities in college golf.

Entering his 23rd season at ETSU and his 31st year overall, Hall of Fame head coach Fred Warren continues to build a winning tradition for the Buccaneers, making them one of only eight teams to play in the past three NCAA Championships and guiding them into the national spotlight on a yearly basis.

As the 2008-09 season enters the spring portion of the campaign, Warren – who was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame in December of 2003 – and the Bucs are coming off a 2007-08 campaign which saw the team once again garner recognition as one of the nation’s elite squads. Earning a Top 15 ranking throughout much of last year, the team made its 20th trip to the NCAA Championships. In addition, Warren helped guide standout Gareth Shaw to an Atlantic Sun Conference individual title and a spot on the PING All-America second team, while also helping to place Rhys Enoch and Seamus Power on All A-Sun squads. Ending the NCAAs in 22nd place a year ago and returning a young team loaded with talent, Warren and the Bucs will once again undoubtedly enter the 2008-09 spring season as a one of college golf’s top teams.

Since his arrival in 1986, the Warren-led Buccaneer program has been a consistent performer among the nation’s elite, finishing in the top 13 six times and in the top 25 13 times since 1989 – including a third-place finish at the 1996 NCAA Championships and a ninth-place finish in 2001.

During the past 22 seasons, Warren’s Buc squads have won 39 tournaments, including the 2001 NCAA East Regional at Williamsburg, Va. During the 2000-01 season, his squad won four tournaments, including three straight from April to May. Even more impressive, his 1995-96 team won six events, tying national champion Arizona State and Florida for the most tournament wins

during the year, and was ranked as the No. 1 team in the country during part of the year.

Just three years after arriving in Johnson City, Warren returned ETSU to the top of the Southern Conference, a position where the Bucs remained for 12 of the next 17 years. Warren led the Bucs to league titles from 1989-92, 1994-96, 1998-2001, and in 2005, his 12 championships broke the 54-year-old SoCon record of 11 titles held by longtime Duke golf coach Ellis “Dumpy” Hagler, making Warren the winningest men’s golf coach in SoCon history. The Bucs advanced to the NCAA Championships in 1989 and 1992, from 1994 to 2001, and have made the field in four straight seasons (2005-08).

Warren is a seven-time winner of Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors (1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1998 and 1999), has won Atlantic Sun Conference Coach-of-the-Year once, and has twice earned NCAA District Coach-of-the-Year (1989 and 1996). He was a runner-up for National Coach-of-the-Year honors following the 1995-96 season. During his tenure at ETSU, Warren has coached 18 All-America selections and 30 All-Southern Conference choices, and three All-Atlantic Sun picks. He has coached eight of the past 14 Southern Conference Individual Medalists, two Atlantic Sun Conference champions, 11 SoCon Players-of-the-Year, and three Atlantic Sun Conference Players-of-the-Year.

Warren joined the Buccaneer program from collegiate golf power Oklahoma State, where he served as an assistant coach.

During his tenure in Stillwater, the Cowboys won three Big Eight championships and finished as NCAA Tournament runners-up on three occasions. Warren began his coaching career at Texas Christian University, where he led both the men’s and women’s programs from 1979-84. While at TCU, his Horned Frog men’s team finished fourth at the 1980 NCAA Championships and posted a 27th-place finish in 1983. That year he became the first coach to ever place a men’s and women’s team in the NCAA Tournament field during the same season. He guided the women to the 1983 NCAA title and a runner-up finish the previous year. He was named Southwest Conference Men’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1980 and was the SWC Women’s Coach-of-the-Year choice in 1983. In October 2000, Warren was inducted into the TCU Horned Frog Hall of Honor, and in 2003 he was named a TCU “Legend.”

Warren has taught in Golf Digest Instruction Schools, in the Oklahoma State Golf Schools, the North Carolina Golf Schools, the Georgia Academy of Golf, at Purdue University and at the NIKE All-Star Golf Camp. He has served as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee. He has served as Chair of the NCAA District 3 North Golf Committee, as the Chair of the Southern Conference Golf Coaches and as a Chair of the GCAA All-America

Selection Committee. Warren also has served on the Golf Coaches Association of America Ethics Committee.

Warren played his collegiate golf at UCLA while earning a bachelor of arts degree in speech. He received a master of science degree in education from Oklahoma State. He served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer from 1974-78 and was honorably discharged, reaching the rank of Captain. Warren is active in several ETSU student organizations. He is a faculty advisor for Kappa Delta Sorority and has served in the same role for Campus Crusade for Christ and the Christian Student Fellowship.

The ETSU men’s golf team enters the 2009 spring season with a lot of momentum and high expectations after making a record 20th trip to the NCAA Championships a year ago, and earning a national ranking as high as 14th in the fall of 2008.

The Buccaneers have been one of the nation’s top-ranked teams for over three decades, and appear poised to continue that success in the spring of 2009. Head coach Fred Warren’s squad looks promising, as he returns five experienced veterans and three talented freshmen, despite graduating two Irish seniors including Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) and 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference champion Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland), who was a second team All-American and A-Sun Player of the Year.

The Bucs roster will get a substantial talent boost yet again this year from 2008 A-Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and A-Sun first-team selection Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England). In fact, the sophomore has already made good on his potential this season, when he captured his first collegiate championship in the fall at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, posting his season low of 69 in the second round of that event. Enoch was later named Atlantic Sun’s Golfer of the Month in September and ultimately finished tied for first on the team with a stroke average of 73.0. Meanwhile, junior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) matched Enoch’s team-low for stroke average, as the 2007

A-Sun individual champion continued his strong play in the fall and looks to improve even more in the spring.

The Bucs return lone senior Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland), who finished sixth on the squad in stroke average this past fall, while bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to the team. In addition, sophomore Paul O’Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) also comes into the spring with a lot of improvement in his game, as he ranked third on the team in stroke average during the fall and enjoyed an 18th place finish in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Along with O’Kane, fellow sophomore Simon Doherty (Belfast, Northern Ireland) hopes to return from an injury to provide even more depth to the Buccaneer roster.

As for the newcomers to the program, highly regarded freshmen Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland), Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) and Peter Wilson (Locust Valley, New York) only bolster the team’s talent level. In fact, Stewart finished fourth on the team in stroke average during the fall, while Komline played in two of the Bucs three events during the fall, and Stewart played in all three.

The Bucs will once again face a daunting schedule this spring, a slate that will pit them against the best teams in collegiate golf.

etsu and the socon championshipsThe Buccaneers captured the Southern Conference men’s golf championship 17 times after joining the league

in 1979 -- the most by any conference member. ETSU was dominant from the beginning, winning five straight titles from 1979-1983. Making the numbers even more impressive is the fact that ETSU did not have a men’s golf team from 1984-86. Most recently, the Bucs won six straight titles from 1996 to 2001, and bid farewell to the SoCon with a championship in 2005. The Bucs won eight of 10 titles during the '90s and began this decade by winning the 2000 and 2001 championships. The Buccaneers won 12 of 15 championships. Along with the team accolades, many ETSU players have received conference honors. The Bucs have had 12 individual conference champions -- including Patrick Beste in 2000 and Chris Wisler in 1999. The Bucs joined the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2006.

The Bank of Tennessee InTercollegIaTe aT The rIdges

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2008) – For the third straight year the ETSU men’s golf team was in contention to claim its first-ever Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges title, but when the sun settled, Coastal Carolina edged out the Buccaneers by one stroke to capture the crown on Sunday evening.

The Bucs, who have now lost by one stroke in two of the last three years at this event, saw a four-shot lead evaporate on the 18th hole. Both ETSU and Coastal Carolina entered the third and final round two shots behind Wake Forest, but the Chanticleers took full advantage of Paul O’Kane’s (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) triple-bogey on 18, to walk away with a final score of 5-over 869 for the tournament.

ETSU was led by sophomore Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England), who finished in a four-way tie for second, at 1-under 215. Enoch posted a team-best 1-under 71 in Sunday’s final round. The other Buccaneer highlight on the weekend came from freshman Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland). Stewart finished in the top-10 for the first time in his collegiate career, as he tied for sixth, firing an even-par 215.

In just 11 years, the Intercollegiate has rapidly developed into one of the premier collegiate golf tournaments in the United States. Each year, the tournament has featured many of the nation’s finest teams and individual players. For example, the 2003 tournament featured 6 of 14 teams having participated in the 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, with all 14 teams participating in NCAA Regional competition in 2000. That year joining the host East Tennessee State Bucs, who finished ninth at the 2001 NCAA Championships, were Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Houston, Kansas, North Carolina, North Florida, Oklahoma, Pepperdine, South Carolina, Southern California, Tennessee, TCU and Wake Forest. In 2002, Wake Forest, North Carolina, TCU, Duke, South Carolina, ETSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Houston, and others participated in the event. In 2001, 16 of the 18 schools were ranked at the time of the event.

Clemson won the first Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in 1998 with a five-stroke victory over Georgia Tech. Clemson’s Jonathan Byrd scorched the course, firing a 9-under-par 207 to take the individual title by one stroke over teammate Lucas Glover. Another highlight of the 1998 tournament was the collegiate debut of 1999 U.S. Amateur champion David Gossett of Texas. The 1999 edition of The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges was won by Oklahoma, who outdistanced Arizona by five strokes. North Carolina’s Max Harris shot a 5-under-par 211 to claim the individual title by two strokes. The 2000 tournament was won by TCU by three strokes over South Carolina. The individual medalist honors went down to the wire as South Carolina’s Johan Kok shot an 8-under-par 208, outdistancing ETSU’s Chris Wisler by one stroke.

Team champions over the last six years include TCU (2001), Wake Forest (2002), Florida (2003), Tennessee (2004 & 2006) and South Carolina (2005), Virginia Tech (2007) and Coastal Carolina (2008). Individual champions of note include Bill Haas of Wake Forest, who took back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges is held annually at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. The 18-hole, 7,001-yard, par 72 course was designed by renowned course architect Arthur Hills.
