Led by a trio of seniors in Laura Jansone, Sinead O’Sullivan and Kennie Leigh Eisenhower, the ETSU women’s golf team looks to return to the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference again 2010. The Bucs return a skilled and talented lineup that has taken them to their highest national ranking in school history.

Warren-Greene Golf Center

Designed by world-renowned golf architect Tom Fazio, the $2.4 million Warren-Greene Golf Center sits on 14 acres of land overlooking the ETSU campus. Named in honor of longtime ETSU men's golf coach Fred Warren and ETSU golf supporter William B. Greene, Jr., the Warren-Greene Golf Center includes six target greens, two bent-grass greens (one for putting and one for short-game work), three tee areas, a fairway bunker and four greenside bunkers. The accompanying 3,300-square-foot, two-story building, designed by Ken Ross Architects of Johnson City, Tenn., contains coaches' offices, meeting rooms, the Hal Morrison Hall of Fame room, players' lounge, two indoor hitting bays, and an observation deck. Without a doubt, the Warren-Greene Golf Center provides ETSU players with one of the best on-campus practice facilities in college golf.



Success breeds success as the East Tennessee State women’s golf team continues its ascent among the elite women’s golf programs in the nation. During her previous seven years at ETSU, head coach Stefanie Shelton has progressively taken the Lady Bucs to levels of success never before seen in the history of the ETSU women’s golf program.

A year ago, the Buccaneers finished the year ranked 47th nationally by Golfstat.com, the highest such national ranking in program history. In addition, the 2008-09 season also included two more team championships for the squad, as ETSU captured titles in the Sea Trail Women’s Invitational and UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational. Those successes came after a historic 2007-08 season in which the Bucs captured their first conference championship ever and made the team’s first trip to NCAA postseason play. In winning the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference team championship, the squad also captured its first-ever

conference individual championship, as sophomore laura Jansone took home that honor. The league title was ETSU’s second team championship of that year, as the squad also won the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational trophy as well.

In all, Shelton’s teams have nine tournament titles in her seven seasons at ETSU and have finished in the Top 10 in 52 of 59 events, including 41 Top 5 showings. A year ago, Shelton also guided her players to individual success, as a total of four players earned all-conference honors.

Indeed, the record books have been rewritten in recent years, as Shelton has helped several Lady Bucs reach personal bests both in stroke average and individual round play, plus the team has set new program records in every team category. In addition, she has coached six first-team all-conference selections, seven second-team all-conference selections, and two freshman-of-the-year recipients in 2004-05 and 2006-07. In fact, for her efforts during the 2004-05 season, Shelton was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, and she earned the same honor in both 2006-07 and 2007-08 from the Atlantic Sun Conference. Prior to last season, the team enjoyed what was at the time its best finish ever in conference championship play both in 2005-06 and 2006-07,

finishing second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, and narrowly missing out on trips to the NCAA Championships.

In addition to the continued success on the golf course, the team has excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 3.57 cumulative GPA, placing it in the top 25 in the country.

Shelton came to ETSU from Texas Christian University where she was the assistant women’s golf coach during the 2001-02 season. While with the Horned Frogs, she assisted with all aspects of the team, including coaching, recruiting, practice organization and conducting the first Horned Frog golf camp.

A 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a double major in entrepreneurial management

and marketing, Shelton was a three-year member of the women’s golf team at South Carolina where she was an Academic All-American, as well as making the SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll every year. Before playing at South Carolina, Shelton played for a year at Wake Forest University, redshirting her freshman year. An exceptional student, Shelton made the dean’s list in each of her seasons at South Carolina, graduating cum laude in her majors. Shelton minored in Sports Administration. She has begun work toward a master’s degree in Sports Psychology at ETSU.

Shelton was also involved with helping manage a golf school, the Hartefeld National Golf School, working with that program for four years. There she assisted PGA professionals with instruction of adults, collegians and juniors. Shelton was a member of the National Golf Coaches Association Strategic Development Committee, as well as a charter member and “Education Chair” of the Tri-Cities Executive Women’s Golf Association. She also served as a columnist for Golf Journeys magazine.

In addition to her academic and athletic exploits, Shelton also has a long history of community service. At ETSU, Shelton has stressed community involvement and has directed her players to help in several “giving back” activities, such as participating in Special Olympics, Communities in Schools, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Families First, Appalachian Christian Village and Woodridge Hospital. She was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Athletes Care Team while at Wake Forest. At South Carolina, she participated in Team Gamecock Habitat for Humanity Harvest Hope and was a big sister for a third grader in 1999. As a player, Shelton was the youngest Delaware Amateur Champion at age 16, held many titles as a junior golfer traveling throughout the nation, and set two course records. She was a co-captain her senior year at South Carolina and was ranked second in the nation in “short game.” She competed in Regional Championships every year and competed with her team for a National Championship title three times.

PGA professional Darren Howard joined the ETSU women’s golf coaching staff as an assistant in the fall of 2009. Though he brings his expertise to the college ranks for the first time with the Buccaneers’ program, Howard has enjoyed a long and successful

career in the golf industry.He currently serves as head PGA

professional at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn., a position he has held since October of 1996. Prior to coming to The Ridges, he served as head professional at Old Tabby Links in Spring Island/Okatie, S.C., for two years, and before that was an assistant at clubs such as Colleton River Plantation, Long Cove Club and Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, S.C., and the Cypress Links Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla.

While he has enjoyed many accomplishments as a player, Howard has also had articles published in both PGA Magazine and Golf World Magazine, hosted an instructional television show on WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities, and served on the Board of Directors of the Tri-Cities PGA Chapter, the Hilton Head Island Golf Professionals Association, and the Tennessee Section of the PGA.

Howard has earned many honors in his time as a PGA Professional, including Professional of the Year (2002 & 2003), Chapter Teach of the Year (2003, 2006 & 2007), Merchandiser of the Year (2002, 2004, 2007 & 2008), and PING Club Fitter of the Year (2004, 2009).

A Class A Member of the Professional Golfers Association of America, Howard is on the professional advisory staff for PING, Titleist and EZ-Go. He and his wife Amy are the proud parents of two girls, Courtney and Shelby.

Heading into the 2010 spring season, the ETSU women’s golf team and head coach Stefanie Shelton have a veteran team that includes the return of six letterwinners from a year ago. But this group is just not experienced, it is also talented, with three players that made All-Atlantic Sun a year ago, and two that made the league’s all-freshman team.

Shelton said the team is just excited to get the year started. “The girls have been working hard and we’ve tried to be on the course as much as we can the last few weeks,” said Shelton, whose team won the A-Sun title and made the NCAAs in 2007. “We’re excited to travel and begin competing. We would ultimately like to end the season playing for a national championship.”

Leading the Bucs this season will be a trio of seniors in laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia), Sinead o’Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) and Kennie leigh eisenhower (Newport), a group that has made up the core of the ETSU team over the last four seasons and enjoyed a great deal of success. Both Jansone and O’Sullivan are former first team All-Atlantic Sun

picks and have enjoyed individual successes on the course, winning multiple individual titles.

Jansone finished second on the team in stroke average during the fall at 75.3, while O’Sullivan was fourth on the team at 76.5. Meanwhile, Eisenhower has consistently improved during her time in Johnson City and finished fifth on the team in stroke average both last season and in the fall. A year ago, Jansone tied for the team lead in stroke average at 75.6, winning the Sea Trail Intercollegiate back on Sept. 21, 2008. Meanwhile, O’Sullivan finished third on the team at 76.0.

That group of seniors is joined by another trio, as sophomores nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria), Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) and Malin Mannson (Kalmar, Sweden) round out the rest of the squad. A year ago, Muehl was a second team All A-Sun selection after finishing tied with Jansone for the team lead in stroke average at 75.6. Both Muehl and Vizcarrondo were A-Sun All-Freshman Team selections as well.

In the fall, Muehl led the squad with a 75.0 stroke average, while Vizcarrondo finished third at 76.3.

Former ETSU player Natalia Giraldo will join the Buccaneers’ women’s golf coaching staff this fall as a volunteer assistant coach. Giraldo, a four-year contributor to the Bucs from 2004 to 2008, will become the program’s first-ever assistant coach after

graduating from ETSU in 2008 with a degree in business. A second-team All A-Sun performer her senior season, Giraldo finished third on that squad with a 76.6 stroke average and helped power the team to the program’s first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference title and trip to the NCAA postseason.

After posting a program-tying fourth consecutive winning season, ETSU women’s basketball made history by making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. The Lady Bucs, who boasted the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeated Mercer and Jacksonville en route to being tabbed the No. 13 seed in the Berkeley Region. ETSU set a new school record with 16 conference victories and tallied its third straight 20-win season after finishing the campaign at 20-11. Four Lady Bucs were rewarded for their hard work on the court, as Siarre Evans was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, while Latisha Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, TaRonda Wiles was named First All-Conference and Gwen Washington was selected to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Evans also cleaned up at the A-Sun Tournament by being tabbed Tournament MVP and was also named a Finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Back-To-Back

In 2008-09, the ETSU men’s basketball team continued to build on its long-standing tradition of success, capturing the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship. With that victory, the Buccaneers

made their eighth trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament, while bringing home the 26th overall championship in program history. More recently, ETSU has now enjoyed four 20-win seasons in the last seven years, having won

conference titles in each of those four campaigns.

Dancing Again

A year removed from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued to dominate play winning its fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season crown, while dropping league rival Stetson 4-2, for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. In addition to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance the No. 61-ranked Bucs swept through the conference awards as head coach Yaser Zaatini was named the 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year, while senior Enrique Olivares was again named the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. Overall, the Bucs placed six total players on the all-conference teams in addition to running its current A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight wins.

Championships

BLUEThe ETSU men’s cross country/track and field program joined an elite group in 2008-09, as the Bucs were only one of five Division I programs to win the “Triple Crown.” The Bucs began leg one of their quest on the first Saturday in November when ETSU held off Belmont for its first A-Sun crown and 21st overall conference championship. ETSU, who defeated the Bruins by six points (29 to 35), brought its first cross country championship back to Johnson City since winning the crown in 1996. Then, on the third weekend of February, the Bucs completed leg two of the Trifecta run, as ETSU knocked off reigning conference champion Kennesaw State and hoisted the A-Sun Indoor Championship crown for the third time in the last four years. The “Triple Crown” was finally completed in mid-May when the Buccaneer squad overcame many obstacles – and once again – held off Kennesaw State to claim its second outdoor title since joining the league in 2005-06. The ETSU distance runners had a huge hand in winning the championship, as the Bucs went 1-thru-3 in the 5000m and 1-thru-4 in the 10000m.

Head coach Steve Brooks’ squad returned to the Big Dance for the second time in school history, after winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament titles over league rival Stetson. Despite a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to in-state rival and host Tennessee, the Lady Bucs rolled to their best overall season in program history, placing four members on the all-conference team, while senior Tara Byrne (MVP), junior Yevgenyia Stupak and sophomore Tara Sheets earned all-tournament honors.

Seamus PowerPower, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Michael StewartIn winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the

Atlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Fred WarrenThe Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest

schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was

Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005)The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

Tara ByrneAfter leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its

second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time all-conference member and team captain

left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yevgenyia StupakStupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Ben Ronoh ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Enrique OlivaresOverall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in

program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school

history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an

Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). The four-time A-Sun First-Team member and two-time A-Sun Player of the Year, became the highest ranked ITA preseason player in

school and league history in 2008 as the No. 9-ranked ITA singles player in the nation. The three-time A-Sun Tournament MVP, again led the Bucs to their fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Kenneth Rotich Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Heidi DahlDahl was an outstanding track and field athlete in 2008-09, as she represented ETSU at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Orem, Utah, native became the first Lady Buccaneer student-athlete to receive All-America honors since 2000 at the Outdoor Championships, as she finished sixth in the 1500m run. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Siarre Evans Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of

2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun

All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans

continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009

Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Paul HoilmanAfter an outstanding freshman season,

Hoilman had a career 2008-09 sophomore year as he received numerous postseason awards including being named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third-Team, the Ping!Baseball All-America Honorable

Mention Team and the College Baseball Insider All-America Second-Team. Hoilman received

Atlantic Sun All-Conference First-Team recognition and was selected as the A-Sun Player of the Week

on April 27. The Johnson City native led the A-Sun in slugging, and finished in the top ten in batting

average, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks and sacrifice flies.

Bo ReederReeder came on strong in his freshman season tying the ETSU freshman home run record with 15 in his first year with the Bucs. Reeder was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.
