season Preview

2010 Season ReviewThe 2009-10 ETSU Women’s Tennis team recorded one of the best regular seasons in school history as it finished the season with an impressive 17-5 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in regular season Atlantic Sun Conference play. In addition, the Bucs defeated three nationally ranked opponents which included, No. 57 Georgia State, No. 60 North Florida, and No. 73 USC Upstate. The Bucs also received their highest ranking of No. 61 during the year.

Not only did the team succeed on the court but it also succeeded off the court. The NCAA recognized the team for its exceptional work in the classroom as it finished the year in the top 10 percent of all NCAA women’s tennis programs in Academic Progress Rate. In addition, seven members of the squad earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors.

Individually, Yevgeniya Stupak capped off an incredible career with the Blue and Gold by becoming the all-time leader in singles wins at ETSU with 108. Stupak passed former ETSU standout and current assistant coach Tara Byrne for the all-time record. In addition, Stupak was named Atlantic Sun All-Conference for the fourth time in her career.

Joining Stupak on the all-conference team were Paula Jaime, Diana Navrostska, and Andra Voinea. Stupak and Jaime earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while Navrostska and Voinea were named to the Second Team. Stupak and

Voinea earned spots on the All-Tournament Team at the Atlantic Sun Championship.

2011 ScheduleAs they have in the past, the Bucs have put together a highly competitive schedule for 2011. The Bucs will face three opponents that appear in the ITA preseason rankings. ETSU will take on No. 52 Wake Forest, No. 47 Yale, and No. 70 North Florida.

In addition to the three nationally ranked opponents, the Bucs will also face a non-conference slate that includes trips to Eastern Kentucky, Columbia, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, and Virginia Tech. ETSU will also host UNC Asheville in the final regular season match of the season.

ETSU will open up Atlantic Sun play on the road against No. 70 North Florida and Jacksonville on March 4th and 5th. North Florida defeated ETSU in the finals of the A-Sun Tournament just a year ago. Following the two matches in Jacksonville, the Bucs remain in Florida as they take on Florida Atlantic just a day later.

Following the long road swing, the Bucs head back home for their first conference matches in Johnson City. The Bucs will host Belmont and Lipscomb on consecutive days beginning on March 11.

The Bucs then hit the road again for three straight. ETSU will play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on March 13 before continuing conference play at Campbell and USC Upstate.

The Bucs then return home for A-Sun tilts against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson in back-to-back days on March 25 and 26. The Bucs then take on A-Sun foes Kennesaw State and Mercer on the road to close out the regular season conference schedule. ETSU will host UNC Asheville in the final regular season match of the year on April 7 in a tune-up for the A-Sun Tournament.

After closing out the regular season at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center, ETSU will look for a conference title at the A-Sun Tournament Championship, April 14-16 in DeLand, Fla.

On July 9, 2010, ETSU men’s tennis coach Yaser Zaatini was named the Director of Tennis at ETSU. He now has direct oversight for both the Buccaneer men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Entering his ninth year as head coach of the ETSU men’s tennis program and first as head of the women’s team, Zaatini continues to build upon the success his teams have achieved under his leadership. Last season, the Bucs finished the season with a 16-8 overall mark, which included an A-Sun Tournament title and a historic victory over Alabama in the NCAA Tournament. The Bucs also finished the year as the No. 32 ranked team in the country, while junior Charles Bottoni became just the third Buc in history to earn an individual trip to the NCAA Singles Championship.

Zaatini was initially named the assistant coach of the men’s tennis program in the fall of 2002, but has taken on the larger responsibility of head coach since former head coach Dave Mullins was named as the director of athletics at ETSU. Since being named head coach, the five-time conference “Coach of the Year,” has not only sustained the Bucs great tennis tradition but he has pushed it to a new level, winning 13 conference championships and has made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, while compiling a 151-51 overall record (.748 winning percentage). In 2009, Zaatini added to the Buc legacy after ETSU posted a 13-8 record, while going unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference action again. After sweeping both the A-Sun Regular Season and Tournament titles, Zaatini helped the Bucs extend their A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight matches. Under Zaatini, six Bucs earned all-conference honors in 2009, while former standout Enrique Olivares earned the highest ITA ranking in conference history. Overall, Zaatini’s leadership was evident a season ago as ETSU earned its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, while ETSU picked up road wins at No. 38 Wisconsin, while Olivares won the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate tournament.

In 2008, Zaatini continued to lead his team to wins as the Bucs again went unbeaten in A-Sun play, winning the regular and tournament conference championships. More importantly ETSU dropped Big East conference champion Notre Dame 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Championships. This marked the first-ever victory for ETSU in the NCAA tournament, as the Bucs finished with a program-best ITA rankings of 37th nationally and seventh regionally. Overall, Zaatini was again named A-Sun Coach of the Year, after the Bucs finished with a 25-4 overall record.

Yaser Zaatiniboth the regular season and championship titles. Zaatini’s 2007 team defeated No. 31 MTSU, as well as San Francisco, Texas-San Antonio, Nebraska and Wichita State. The Bucs also collected 14 shutout victories, including all eight against conference opponents in both the regular season and league tournament. The 2007 team also wound up in the ITA National Rankings again for the sixth year in a row, at No. 51, as well as No. 13 regionally.

Before competing fully in the A-Sun, Zaatini led the Bucs to a 20-4 overall record in 2005, while going undefeated for the second consecutive year in SoCon play, extending their SoCon winning streak to 26-0. Zaatini was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season as the Bucs made their fourth NCAA tournament, dropping a close match to No. 14 Tennessee.

In 2004, Zaatini led the Bucs to their third NCAA appearance and first of his career as the men’s tennis program went 20-6 overall and was undefeated in SoCon play (10-0), winning both the regular season and championship titles. Zaatini would go on to earn his first of four career “Coach of the Year,” awards.

As a player, Zaatini was the first individual from ETSU to compete in the NCAA Championships and is the only four-time Southern Conference tennis champion in No. 1 singles. In 1992, he was ranked as high as fourth in the nation in the ITA rankings, the highest ever for a Buccaneer tennis player. Zaatini was also a two-time ITA All-American (1992, 1993), becoming one of two (Enrique Olivares is the other) Bucs to earn that prestigious title.

After graduation Zaatini became a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He made appearances in the 1994 and 1995 Davis Cup tournaments, representing his home country of Venezuela.

He returned to ETSU prior to his head coach assignment in the fall of 1996 to serve as a volunteer assistant with the Buccaneer program. Zaatini then went back to play professionally in Venezuela while managing the Zaatini Tennis Academy in his hometown of Maracay. He has served as the director of the academy for the last six years where Zaatini has taught nationally and internationally ranked juniors and professionals alike.

Zaatini is a 1993 graduate of East Tennessee State University and in 2004 Zaatini was recognized formally for his accomplishments when he was inducted into the ETSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Currently, Zaatini resides in Johnson City with his wife Gloria and their three sons, Yaser, affectionately known as “Yaby,” Sebastian, and Giancarlos.

Local Johnson City native Tara Byrne closed out her storied ETSU career as the most decorated player in the long history of Lady Buc tennis greats. Byrne completed her career with a then-school record 107 singles wins. A four-time All A-Sun First-Team selection, Byrne wrapped her conference matches as the 2009 A-Sun Tournament MVP. Overall, Tara was named to three all-tournament teams, while earning the 2009 ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, which went to the nation’s top women’s tennis

A native of Werribee, Australia, Sandlant joined the ETSU women’s tennis coaching staff in the fall of 2007. Buc fans will remember that Sandlant was a key member of the 2007 ETSU men’s tennis team that took home the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference regular and postseason championships. During that magical run Sandlant posted a 16-3 overall record in singles play and a 19-11 doubles record.

First-Team All-Conference in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Sandlant was honored by the AAC as its “Player of the Year,” in 2005, while being named the ITA “Freshman of the Year,” in 2004. Nationally, Sandlant was ranked as high as sixth in the nation, before transferring to the Bucs. Sandlant graduated from ETSU in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies. Currently, Sandlant is pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from ETSU.

2008-09: Earned a spot on the A-Sun All-Tournament team after posting two wins, including the clinching victory in the Lady Bucs 5-2 comeback win over Stetson in the A-Sun Tournament Championship match… posted a 13-6 overall record… won the ETSU Fall Classic Pink Bracket with a perfect 3-0 record… finished the season strong with a 4-0-2 record during her last six matches of the year… went 20-13 in doubles with teammates Andra Voinea, Vita Moskaliova and Whitney Trotter.

2007-08: Despite having a 6-11 overall record, Sheets earned A-Sun All-Freshman team honors… with various ETSU teammates, Sheets posted six doubles wins, while going unbeaten in pairs action during A-Sun action.

Prep: Played tennis for Gate City High School…helped her team to a 40-1 overall record and thirteen Single A Virginia state titles…had a career singles record of 101-1…was the 2005 and 2006 Virginia Single A State Champion in singles and doubles…was ranked No. 106 nationally as a junior…ranked as a top-10 U-16 player in the Mid-Atlantic region, while being a top-5 U-16 player in the state of Virginia.

2007-08: Had one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in ETSU history… posted a 23-14 overall record, including going 8-3 in A-Sun contests… earned A-Sun All-tournament honors after going unbeaten in the conference tournament play… picked up a straight set 6-2, 6-1 victory against Iva Jaresova of A-Sun champ Jacksonville on April 20th… posted 10 doubles victories throughout the season.

Prep: Attended the Andrei Saguna National College…highly ranked junior player… was ranked as a top-10 junior in Romania.

Sylwia ZiolkowSkaClosed out her ETSU career in 2006, Ziolkowska was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Team in 2006 and was a Southern Conference First Team doubles selection in 2005. Improved her

record every season while at ETSU, as a freshman went 16-20, was 19-17 as a sophomore, 21-16 as a junior, and 22-9 as a senior. Was named the team MVP her freshman season. Played a large roll in leading the Lady Bucs to their first conference title and first NCAA appearance. Ziolkowska is tied for seventh place in single season doubles wins with 26 and is third place in career singles wins behind Pace-Wagner and Masha Ilina with 77.

maSHa ilinaNamed the Atlantic Sun Woman of the Year and was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year following the 2007 season. At the close of her ETSU career in 2007, Ilina became the first-ever Lady

Buc to ever reach 100 victories with a career singles record of 103-54. She was an All-SoCon doubles selection in 2005 and was named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team in 2006 and 2007. She was also named the A-Sun Player of the Year in 2006. Ilina was also awarded the ITA/Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award for the Southeast Region in 2007. Played a large roll in leading the Lady Bucs to their first ever conference title and first NCAA appearance. She finished her degree in Finance in three years and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at ETSU.

lindSey gaStrigHtThe Woodstock, Ga., native wrapped up her career at ETSU with a 71-49 singles record, including a 20-9 mark in her senior campaign. Her 71 wins put her in fifth place in career singles wins.

Gastright’s four-year career at ETSU was just as successful in the classroom as on the tennis court. She graduated with a 3.85 grade point average. She was named to the Buccaneer Academic Honor Roll, Dean’s List, as well as the Southern Conference Honor Roll several times.

Beck offenBacHerTurned in a 15-15 singles record as a senior and placed third at the 1990 Southern Conference Tournament in No. 2 singles. She teamed with Debbie Marshall to finish as the runner-up in doubles at

the 1990 SoCon Championships. Offenbacher tallied a 60-55 record at ETSU.

doubles and was honored with the 1996 Southern Conference Sportsmanship Award. She was a finalist at the 1996 league championships at number one singles and was named All-Conference in doubles along with teammate Dara Bushman. She recorded her best tournament record of 12-4 during the

olya BatSulaOlya Batsula was awarded the National ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, which goes to the women’s tennis player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team and who

enhances the team’s performance and exemplifies the spirit of college tennis. Batsula was also chosen by the Atlantic Sun Conference to be the A-Sun nominee for the 18th Annual NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Batsula was a first-ever four-time all conference selection and leaves her ETSU career with 179 career victories, which is the third best mark in program history. Off the court Batsula graduated Magna Cum Laude, in May of 2008, and was a four-time member of the ITA Scholar Athlete team. Also Batsula was always active in the community throughout her ETSU career, helping out with the Boys and Girls Club, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Girls Inc., Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots. Even though Batsula was busy with academics and practices she still found time to give lessons to wheelchair-bound students and underprivileged kids. Batsula would even drive 20 minutes to Kingsport with racquets, balls and a net to give tennis lessons to kids who were interested in the sport, but had no one to teach them the game.

tara ByrneLocal Johnson City native Tara Byrne closed out her storied ETSU career as the most decorated player in the long history of Lady Buc tennis greats. Byrne completed her career with a school-

record 107 singles wins. A four-time All A-Sun First Team selection, Byrne wrapped her conference matches as the 2009 A-Sun Tournament MVP. Overall, Tara was named to three all-tournament teams, while earning the 2009 ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, which went to the nation’s top women’s tennis player who embodied the dedication and commitment to her team, which enhanced the squad’s performance and spirit. Byrne also led ETSU to three A-Sun Regular Season titles, two A-Sun Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament berths. In addition to the on-court success, Tara left ETSU as a four-time A-Sun and ITA Academic Scholar Athlete and as a 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year award nominee.

yeVgeniya StuPakYevgeniya Stupak, a native of Kyiv, Ukraine, closed out her incredible career in 2010 by becoming the school’s all-time leader in singles victories with 108. Stupak passed former ETSU great

Tara Byrne, who was the previous leader with 107 all-time singles wins. A four-time A-Sun all-conference selection and the 2009 A-Sun Player of the Year, Stupak also qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship in 2008. She became the first ETSU women’s tennis player ever to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. Stupak has been ranked as high as No. 83 in the nation by the ITA. She also earned A-Sun All-Tournament honors in 2009 and 2010.

The Dave Mullins Legacy

Dave Mullins became ETSU’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on April 14, 2003. Mullins had served as interim director since the previous December.

Prior to his promotion to AD, Mullins was a widely respected coach, leading the ETSU men’s tennis team from 1988-2002. In 2002, Mullins led the squad to its second NCAA tournament appearance. Despite falling to Auburn in the first round, Mullins had many things to be proud of after looking back on the 2001-02 season. The SoCon Tournament crown was his fifth tournament championship and the program also boasted its fifth Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon Tournament in freshman Moises Serrano. However, these successes were modest when compared to ETSU’s list of accomplishments under Mullins’ direction.

Mullins coached 28 all-conference players during his tenure, en route to being named Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year five times. After Mullins began coaching the Bucs in 1988, ETSU has had numerous ITA nationally and regionally ranked players, including the school’s first All-American, Yaser Zaatini, who received the honor in 1992 and 1993. Mullins also had 18 Southern Conference singles champions, 11 doubles champs, and five Southern Conference Players-of-the-Year.

Mullins twice guided ETSU to back-to-back regular-season SoCon championships in 1995 and 1996 and again in 1999 and 2000. The Bucs have gone undefeated in the SoCon four times and from April 1998 through April of 2000 they won 21 straight conference matches. In his 15 years of service, Mullins compiled an overall record of 237-103 (.697) and a conference mark of 85-24 (.780).

Besides mentoring athletic talent, Mullins built a reputation of recruiting student-athletes who maintained a high standard of excellence in the classroom. In 2002 the squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team for a second time (1999) and six of the team’s eight players managed a GPA of over 3.60 (4.0), including a 3.9 GPA in the fall of 2002. On top of all that, Mullins coached five players who earned Academic All-America honors.

Prior to the 1996 season, Mullins doubled as the head coach for the ETSU women’s program. During his eight-year stint with the Lady Bucs, he posted a 98-73 overall mark (.573) and a 29-19 (.604) record in the conference. Mullins registered winning records in five of his last six seasons with the women’s tennis team, and was awarded the women’s SoCon Coach of the Year in 1989. Mullins earned his B.S., cum laude, in English from Samford University in 1968 and his master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

Coach Buddy Hartsell led the ETSU tennis teams to some of their finest seasons ever until his death in 1982. Under his direction, the Buccaneers won the 1978 Ohio Valley Conference championship and were the Eastern Collegiate champions. Hartsell was one of the most popular figures in ETSU athletic history. Widely respected as both a person and a coach, he exhibited unsurpassed devotion to the Buccaneer athletic program. Hartsell was a legend at ETSU. Not only was he a great tennis coach,

but was a basketball and tennis star for the Buccaneers from 1956-59. He also served as a tennis instructor at the Johnson City Country Club for over 10 years and was well known for his work in the Johnson City Parks and Recreation’s junior and adult tennis clinics.

In memory of Coach Hartsell, the Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award is presented by the Southern Conference each season to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship.

In 1989, the ETSU Pirate Club reactivated the Buddy Hartsell Scholarship Fund, which provides an extra scholarship for the Buccaneer tennis program through private contributions in his honor.

HYDROWORXWithout a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

BUCSPORTSThe Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and a primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

FLUROSCANThe “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREAThe general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 26th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

graduation. ETSU Athletics provides many resources to assist the student-athlete in achieving his/her academic goals and in preparing ultimately for life after college. The staff not only advises students in scheduling classes and making academic progress, but offers support in the areas of group and individual tutoring, academic mentoring, career and personal counseling and life skills programming. Student-athletes have access to a state-of-the-art computer center that features Dell flat-screen computers, wireless Internet technology and study hall facilities that are open after hours during the week and on Sundays for their use. ETSU is also an active participant in the NCAA CHAMPS program. Through this model, student-athletes are offered a wide range of seminars designed to help them adjust to college life, develop as individuals and prepare for their careers after graduation.

ETSU had one of its most successful seasons in school history as the Bucs won their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Regular season and tournament championships. Also ETSU finished the year ranked 11th in the region and 75th in the nation in the final ITA poll. Overall, the Bucs finished 23-5, going a perfect 9-0 in conference play, with a record 15 shut-out matches. In the NCAA tournament the Bucs would draw in-state foe Vanderbilt. The No. 12-ranked Commodores ended the Bucs incredible season with a 4-0 win.

The Bucs finished the 2010 season as regular season Atlantic Sun champions for the second straight year. ETSU posted a perfect 10-0 record in conference play and has compiled an 18-1 conference mark the past two seasons. The Bucs also finished the year with a 17-5 overall record that included three wins against nationally ranked opponents. In addition, the Bucs earned a high ranking of No. 61 during the year. Yevgeniya Stupak capped off her career as the school’s all-time winningest player in singles play.

2008In one of the most impressive individual seasons in ETSU and A-Sun history, current junior Yevgeniya Stupak became the first-ever Buc and league member to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships. 2009-Atlantic Sun Regular Season and Tournament Champions- NCAA ParticipantAfter a two-year championship drought the ETSU women’s tennis team continued its strong tradition in the A-Sun, winning both the league’s regular season and tournament championships. After posting a 17-7 record, with a strong 8-1 mark in A-Sun competition, ETSU earned its second trip ever to the NCAA Tournament where the Lady Bucs took on instate rival No. 12 Tennessee. ETSU’s best win of the season came in front of a packed Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center as head coach Steve Brooks’ ladies earned a remarkable 4-2 win over conference rival Stetson in the tournament championship match. In that contest ETSU fought back from a 2-0 deficit, winning the next four singles matches from senior Tara Byrne, freshmen Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo and sophomore Tara Sheets.
