Now entering her 14th year as a coach and the 10th season as

the head coach of the women’s soccer program at East Tennessee State University, Heather Henson has led the Bucs to three consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference tournaments (2005, 2006 and 2007) and numerous off the field accomplishments.

During the 2007 campaign the Bucs had an 11-6-3 overall record, making history defeating Stetson, 2-1, to advance to the A-Sun conference tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. Henson has led current Bucs Jordan Monty, Katie Green and Kelly Brinkman to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference Second-Team, while Brinkman was also named to the All-Freshman Team. In the process, the Bucs broke several team records, setting the second highest single-season goals mark at 38, while shattering both the single-season record for assist and points. The Bucs also took top team honors twice in two regular season tournaments, winning both the Citizens Bank ETSU Invitational and the Gamecock Soccer Classic. Individually, both Green and Monty were named as each tournament’s MVP respectively.

In the classroom the women’s soccer team continued to show its character off the field earning a 3.32 team grade point average this past season. The Bucs named 18 of its 22 student-athletes to the Buc Honor Roll, 12 to the Dean’s List, and had two players earn a GPA of 4.0 for the entire year.

In 2005, the Bucs made a successful transition to the A-Sun, posting an 8-11-1 record, despite losing six games by only one goal. The Bucs, at the

time, set the school record for shots and goals in a season.

Coach Henson was recognized as having one of the most improved Division I women’s soccer teams for the 2003 season by Soccer Buzz, a nationally recognized source for collegiate soccer information. Henson and the Bucs broke many of the records they had set in 2002 including best overall and conference records, lowest goals-against average in the season allowing a mere 19 goals, and most goals in a season tallying 38. The Bucs were also able to cut their goal differential by 50 percent and increase the number of games they scored in by 50 percent.

Henson arrived in Johnson City after a four-year stint from 1995-98 as head coach of High Point University’s soccer program. While at High Point, Henson led the team to back-to-back

CVAC tournament championship appearances in her first two seasons and reached the championship game each year. She also helped the team move from NAIA competition to NCAA Division II and finally to NCAA Division I. In addition to her coaching duties at High Point, Henson served

as the Athletic Department’s Senior Women’s Administrator from 1997-99. Prior to becoming the head coach at High Point, Henson served as an assistant coach for the Panthers men’s and women’s teams from 1994-95.

In addition to her collegiate coaching career, Henson has been active in coaching organizations including the National Soccer Coaches Association and the United States Soccer Federation and holds her NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF ‘B’ license. Henson is also a member of the NSCAA National Ranking Committee as the A-Sun voting member.

Currently, Henson serves as the Tennessee ODP Soccer Staff Head Coach and has instructed in the USSF ‘D’ coaching course since 2000. She was an assistant coach for the Tennessee ODP from 1999-2000. Henson also served as head coach of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program from 1995-98. She was an assistant coach for the N.C. ODP from 1994-95.

Before transitioning into her coaching career, Henson played 10 years of club soccer in her hometown of Dallas, Texas, and played six years for the North Texas ODP. She attended UNC-Greensboro where she was a four-year starter. In her four seasons, the Spartans were ranked No. 1 in the Division II poll in the fall of 1990 and were ranked as high as No. 17 in the Division I poll in 1991. She graduated in 1994 with a degree in psychology.

The former Heather Puckett, Henson is married to Chris Henson, ETSU’s Assistant Director of the Buccaneer Athletic Scholarship Association. The couple lives in Johnson City, Tenn., with their daughter Callie.

Stoots joined the Buccaneers in 2004 and now enters his fifth year with

the women’s soccer program and his second season as the associate head coach at ETSU. Stoots assists head coach Heather Henson in all facets of running the program with a focus on goalkeeper training. Under Stoots, current players Erin Bilyeu and Rachel Van Horn currently hold 15 individual or career records and allowed only 28 goals in 2007. Prior to ETSU, Stoots served as an assistant coach for the Troy State women’s soccer program. As the team’s goalkeeping coach, Stoots helped guide Troy State’s goalkeepers to their lowest goals-against average in the program’s history. He also assisted the team to improve academically with his implementation of an academic success plan that contributed to 12 players with over a 3.0 GPA. Stoots’ duties also included recruiting and planning travel.

In 2002, Stoots served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Milligan College. While there he helped lead the Lady Buffs to a berth in the Region XII Finals and guided their goalkeeper to All-America honors.

Outside the collegiate ranks Stoots has assisted the 1991 age group for the Tennessee Olympic Development Program and was the head director of goalkeepers and a staff coach in the Tri-Cities Force Soccer Club. Stoots holds an NSCAA Premier Licence National Coaching Diploma and has taught the goalkeeping section of the USSF ‘D’ coaching course.

In addition to his coaching experience, Stoots played as a goalkeeper at Milligan for four seasons, serving as team captain his junior and senior seasons. He helped lead the team to a 15-7 record in 2001, setting a school record for wins. Stoots also holds individual

honors at Milligan for career shutouts, career goals against average, and wins.

A native of Bristol, Tenn., Stoots graduated in 2002 from Milligan College with a degree in Human Performance and Exercise Science. Stoots is married to wife Tiffany. The couple lives in Johnson City, Tenn., with their son Ethan.

Heather Birdsell became the newest member of the ETSU

soccer staff, in the summer of 2008, as a graduate assistant.

The Plano, Texas, native comes to the Tri-Cities after a strong playing career at Samford University. Birdsell had one of the most decorated careers in Bulldog history, being named a four-time All-OVC member and was a member of the All-Southeast Region team three consecutive years. She ranks among Samford’s all-time top-five players, both in goals and assists and is ranked in the top-10 in points and games played.

During her illustrious playing career at Samford, Birdsell led the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, three OVC regular season championships and an OVC tournament title. Birdsell was at her best when on the grand stage, taking and scoring the penalty kick to help the Bulldogs advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament against No. 19-ranked Vanderbilt.

Off the field Birdsell excelled in the classroom, making the Dean’s List all but one semester of her undergraduate career. She has also spent time coaching the U-11 Briarwood Soccer Club and Charlotte Eagles Soccer Camps. In addition, Birdsell has spend numerous hours helping with the Urban Kidz after school program, Habitat for Humanity, Lakeshore Foundation Olympic and

Paralympics training site, Mercedes Marathon and Dawson 5K, and St. Martin’s In The Pines Nursing Home.

A 2008 graduate from Samford University, with a degree in Sports Management, Birdsell will begin pursuing her master’s degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies in the fall from ETSU.

2007 Review -The East Tennessee State University women’s

soccer team made history in 2007 earning an 11-6-3 overall record and claiming its first-ever postseason victory after defeating Stetson, 2-0, advancing to the Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinals for the first time. With all the history being made, the Bucs in the process broke several team records, setting the second highest single-season goals mark at 38, while shattering both the single-season record for assist and points. As a team, the Bucs were nationally ranked in scoring offense, being tabbed 51st in the country with 1.9 goals per game, while Jordan Monty, Katie Green and Terri Miller ranked in the top-100 individually as well. Green ranked 18th in the country with 0.5 assists per game, Monty’s 1.45 points per game average was 46th best and she and Miller were tied for 63rd with 0.55 goals per game. The Bucs took top team honors twice in two regular season tournaments, winning both the Citizens Bank ETSU Invitational and the Gamecock Soccer Classic.

Individually several Bucs garnered A-Sun Conference awards in 2007. As a trio of rising sophomores, Terri Miller, Rachel Van Horn and Kelly Brinkman, twice, all earned A-Sun Player of the Week awards during the season. In addition to these accomplishments, ETSU placed three members of its squad on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second-Team – Jordan Monty, Katie Green and Brinkman. Brinkman was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team, while Monty was honored by the league earning a spot on the A-Sun All-Tournament team.

Forwards - The Bucs have high

expectations for the 2008 season in its attacking third with the return of all-conference junior Jordan Monty and sophomore Terri Miller. Both return after a record-setting year in 2007 and are expected to once again give A-Sun defenders match-up problems. Monty and Miller both led the Bucs in goals, finding the back of the net 11 times. Often times when the Bucs need a goal in the clutch, both strikers were at their best, firing a team-best nine game-winning goals. Head coach Heather Henson and Bucs coaching staff will again look to that toughness in 2008. Junior Danielle Bayles is expected to continue to gain confidence this year, after playing in 14 matches last season. Along with sophomore Jessica Huntington, who returns from a knee injury in 2007, both forwards should give the Bucs depth in the 2008 season.

One experienced veteran that will make a move forward this year is senior Ashley Craig. Craig is expected to bring a number of offensive skills

to the position, including helping create scoring opportunities for not only herself but other Bucs in the attacking third of the field. In addition to the great on- and off-ball tools, the senior also brings leadership and experience to the position, having played in 53 games over her career.

Midfielders – With the midfield playing such a pivotal role in

any soccer match, the 2008 Bucs return a depth and talented group to this vital position. With the combination of strength, size and speed the Bucs should have the capacity to compete with any team on their difficult schedule.

Leading the way for the Bucs is all-conference member, sophomore Kelly Brinkman. Brinkman had one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in Buc history. The Clearwater, Fla., native played in 19 matches for ETSU, scoring six goals and posting 16

points. The All-Freshman and Second-Team A-Sun member is expected to continue that trend as a center midfielder this upcoming season.

Joining Brinkman at central midfield is sophomores Morgan Jutras and Rachel Van Horn. Big things are expected of Jutras, after competing in 20 matches in 2007, starting 14. Van Horn set multiple ETSU single-season goalkeeper records after filling in for the injured senior Erin Bilyeu, but will now move back to her natural position. Van Horn brings good size and height and will provide

aggressiveness inside the box on corner kicks. Like the front attackers ETSU will see two

newcomers in the midfield this season. Freshmen Lindsey Matijevch and Genna Petersen both come to ETSU as highly talented and smart players that always seem to be in the right position on the field. Both should also provide depth for the Bucs and will be looked upon to develop in the program. Peterson will be expected to compete for a starting position.

Defenders –The Bucs strongest and most experienced position

on the field might just be its defense. ETSU returns four of its players who saw action from last season, including seniors Meredith Goldman, Rachel Layer

and juniors Kim Jones and Kia Kindell. Goldman, who started in 28 games over her career, is one of many Buc defenders that held opponents scoring chances down in 2007. Layer, who is one of three ETSU captains, is one of the Bucs most consistent and reliable players, while both Jones and Kindell are expected to anchor the centerback position.

Also returning for ETSU is sophomore Jennifer Altimier, who will see action for the back third of the ETSU line. Altimier is expected to contribute by taking good angles and being aggressive while battling for ball possession. Joining Altimier are fellow sophomores Caitlyn Epps and Alex

Meehan. Epps brings a blue collar work ethic to the team, while Meehan stepped up this spring and improved her one-on-one defense and her composure. Both players will be expected to aid the defense by helping decrease opponents scoring chances in 2008.

Finally, the defense adds a cluster of newcomers in freshmen Kaitlin Bevins, Jessica Hiltenbrand and Grace McCord. All three recruits are athletic, coachable and hard nose and will push for playing time when they arrive on campus this fall.

Goalkeeper –Senior Erin Bilyeu returns as the most experienced

Buc goalkeeper. Bilyeu, who continues to rehab after a knee injury that sidelined her during last season, is expected to return sometime in September. Until that time sophomore Megan Masch and incoming freshman Caitlin Gaughan will battle for the starting role. Masch, who is a good vocal leader, is also a very athletic and technical keeper. Newcomer Gaughan is an excellent shot stopper and very athletic.

2008 Schedule – After winning their first postseason game in the

program’s history, the Bucs look to build on their conference record, taking on a tough non-conference schedule that is highlighted by two opponents from the Southeastern Conference and a trip to the state of Texas. The Bucs will open the season on the road against regional rival UNC Asheville, before returning to their newly completed Summers-Taylor Stadium against Ohio Valley conference member Morehead State, August 31, and SEC in-state rival Vanderbilt, Sept. 5.

The Bucs will take their first full road trip Sept. 12-19, highlighted by a trip to the state of Texas, where as the Bucs will take on 2007 NCAA tournament participants North Texas and TCU, before heading to Columbia, S.C., to take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina. The Bucs will face their first Atlantic Sun member on the road Friday, September 26, at Jacksonville, before heading to North Florida that Sunday.

ETSU returns home for its first home conference game as the Lipscomb Bisons visit Summers-Taylor Stadium on October 3. ETSU will round out conference play before heading to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament November 5-8, hosted by Kennesaw State.

HYDROWORXWithout a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

BUCSPORTSThe Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and a primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

FLUROSCANThe “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREAThe general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Meg StoneDirector of the Center of Excellence for

Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

teams2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to

coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction

between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Women’s BasketballThe ETSU women’s basketball team went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history after posting a program-tying 21-win campaign. The Lady Bucs stormed through conference play with an impressive 14-2 record and followed that up with three straight wins in the Atlantic Sun Tournament to receive the league’s automatic bid to the Big Dance. Along the way Michele DeVault and Siarre Evans received First Team All-Atlantic Sun accolades; head coach Karen Kemp was tabbed Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Five Lady Buccaneer players were named A-Sun

All-Academic, including TaRonda Wiles – who also was named to the All-Tournament Team. Joining Wiles on the tournament team were DeVault and Evans as well as Tournament MVP Latisha Belcher. As a team, ETSU ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense (14th), steals per game (18th) and assists per game (19th); DeVault ranked 12th in three-point field-goal percentage and 23rd in three-point field goals per game. DeVault also set a new all-time record with 239 treys made for her career.

Men’s GolfFor the first time in school history, men’s golf became the only program at ETSU to ever compete in the NCAA Championships 20 times. Under the direction of head coach Fred Warren, the team built on its record number of NCAA appearances, while once again finishing with a trio of Top 20 national team rankings. In addition, senior Gareth Shaw was named PING All-American, marking the second straight year he has earned that honor.

Men’s TennisAfter winning the Atlantic Sun regular season and conference tournament for the second straight season, the ETSU men’s tennis team earned its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament. This time around the No. 7th regionally ranked Bucs added to its program’s storied history by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Notre Dame, 4-2, in Columbis, Ohio. Individually, junior Enrique Olivares earned All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Women’s Golf Women’s golf made history in 2007-08 by capturing the program’s first-ever conference title and earning its

first trip to the NCAA Championships. The Bucs picked the perfect place to win their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship, doing so on their home course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough. In addition, the Bucs watched sophomore Laura Jansone capture the A-Sun individual title as well, becoming the first woman to ever win a conference individual championship.
