Now entering into his eighth season as ETSU Head Women’s Tennis Coach, Steve Brooks has continued to elevate his team’s success in both the Atlantic Sun Conference and in the NCAA Southeast region during his tenure for the Bucs.

Last season Brooks and the Bucs posted a 14-10 overall record, reaching the Atlantic Sun conference finals for the third consecutive season, in addition once again being named an ITA All-Academic team. ETSU continued to make history earning one of its highest final rankings in school history by the ITA. The 2008 season also marked the fourth year in a row that Brooks and ETSU was ranked by the ITA at season’s end, with ETSU finishing the season as the only A-Sun member to receive a final ranking. Individually, Brooks would go on to lead current junior Yevgeniya Stupak to the first ranked singles player all spring season, finishing the year with an individual regional ranking of 14 and a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. Also former Buc great Olya Batsula earned ETSU’s second A-Sun “Woman of the Year,” and NCAA “Woman of the Year,” nominee honor and was named the National Cissie Leary Sportsmanship award winner.

In 2007 Brooks led the Bucs to a 17-10 overall record, posting the school’s first back-to-back A-Sun regular season championships, going 8-1 in league play. Brooks’ club picked up victories over No. 73 Michigan State, UNC Charlotte, Winthrop and former SoCon rival UNC Greensboro. His team also recorded 11 shutout wins with eight coming over A-Sun opponents. The team also earned a No.11 ITA Southeast regional ranking and ETSU’s doubles tandem of former players Olya Batsula and Masha Illina earned the school’s ITA regional doubles ranking. Illina, under Brooks leadership, became the school’s career singles wins leader, while earning the prestigious Regional ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship award and Atlantic Sun “Woman of the Year,” award. Off the court Brooks, along with members of the ETSU Athletic Department, has helped lead a number of ETSU women’s tennis players to ITA Scholar Athlete awards.

The 2006 season marked the most successful season since his arrival at ETSU. Brooks led the team to a 23-5 overall record and a 9-0 conference finish, winning the Atlantic Sun Conference championship and making its first-ever NCAA appearance. His team’s wins during the season included a third consecutive win over former Southern Conference rival College of Charleston and victories over West Virginia, Middle Tennessee State, Davidson and No. 60 Loyola-Marymount. ETSU also recorded 15 shutout wins with nine of them coming over conference opponents. The 2006 squad also ended the season with a No. 75 national ranking, as well as a No. 11 regional ranking, their highest ever. Academically, the team was named an ITA All-Academic team for the third year in a row, while Olya Batsula and Sandie Knight were also named ITA Scholar Athletes.

During the 2004-2005 season Brooks’ team continued to show improvement earning a regional ranking and finishing tied for second in the regular season, while the 2003-04 squad improved from seventh to fourth in the Southern Conference.

After a solid recruiting class in 2001, both the 2001 and 2002 teams grew from two scholarship players and one walk-on to double that while improving to a school-best 12-17 record, which was a 62 percent improvement from the year before Brooks was hired by ETSU.

Brooks came to ETSU after serving as the men’s tennis head coach at The Citadel. He brought more than 10 years coaching experience to the position at ETSU, including stints at nationally ranked University of Tennessee (1987-1990), University of Arkansas (1986), and Carson-Newman, his alma mater, in 1985.

Brooks has also coached on the WTA tour and USTA National junior circuit. He coached four WTA players ranked in the top 120; one of them was No. 30. During the five years previous to coaching at The Citadel, his junior players won four USTA National singles championships along with more than 10 sectional and 30 state titles.

Brooks followed his father, brother, and two sisters by competing collegiately at Carson-Newman College. Brooks is the winningest player in Carson-Newman men’s tennis history.

Steve BrooksHead Coach – B.S. Carson-Newman 1985 – M.S. Tennessee 1989

Brooks was named to the CN Men’s Tennis Team of the Century. He was inducted along with his brother Chip (1999 USPTA National Pro of the Year). He was undefeated in both singles and doubles in conference regular season play all four years of college without losing a set. Brooks was ranked as high as eighth nationally in college.

A native of Jefferson City, Tenn., Brooks earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Carson-Newman. He then earned a master’s degree in administration/recreation from the University of Tennessee. He has taught and lived all over the country and enjoys calling East Tennessee his home.

A native of Werribee, Australia, Sandlant joined the ETSU women’s tennis coaching staff in the fall of 2007. Buc fans will remember that Sandlant was a key member of the 2007 ETSU men’s tennis team that took home the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference regular and postseason championships. During that magical run Sandlant posted a 16-3 overall record in singles play and a 19-11 doubles record.

A graduate of Werribee Secondary College in Werribee, he attended Virginia Intermont College, where Sandlant was named to the AAC First-Team All-Conference in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Sandlant was honored by the AAC as its “Player of the Year,” in 2005, while being named the ITA “Freshman of the Year,” in 2004. Nationally, Sandlant was ranked as high as sixth in the nation, before transferring to the Bucs. Sandlant graduated from ETSU in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies. Currently, Sandlant is pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from ETSU.

A native of Kyiv, Ukraine Stupak joined the ETSU coaching staff in the fall of 2008. Stupak enjoyed an outstanding career at Armstrong Atlantic State University, where she was a four-year letterman for the Pirates. While there Stupak, led AASU to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Individually, Stupak was a member of the ITA All-Star team in 2007 and 2008, after leading the Pirates to a 33-1 overall record and winning the NCAA Division II singles title in 2006. Stupak was the highest ranked ITA Division II singles and doubles player in the nation in 2007, and was a three-time ITA Division II All-American.

Stupak earned her bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and Track Fitness Management from AASU in 2008. Currently, she will be working toward her master’s degree in sports management from ETSU in the fall of 2009. Stupak is also the sister of current Buccaneer women’s tennis junior Yevgeniya Stupak.

2008 Season ReviewHead coach Steve Brooks and the Bucs posted a 14-10 overall record, reaching the Atlantic Sun Conference finals for the third consecutive season. The 2008 season also marked the fourth year in a row that coach Brooks and ETSU was ranked by the ITA at season’s end, with ETSU finishing the season as the only A-Sun member to receive a final ranking. Individually, current junior Yevgeniya Stupak reached a regional ranking of 14 and a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship, while former Buc Olya Batsula earned ETSU’s second A-Sun Woman of the Year award and was the National Winner of the ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award.

2009 ScheduleAfter playing in some of the toughest fall tournaments in the area, the Bucs look to continue that trend early in the year as ETSU squares off against former OVC rival Eastern Kentucky as well as road trips to Kentucky, Mississippi State, UNC-Charlotte and Georgia State.

The early tough non-conference schedule should challenge and prepare the Bucs as they open Atlantic Sun play on March 6 against Lipscomb. After playing Belmont a day later, ETSU will head west to Arizona to face both Northern Arizona and Weber State in Flagstaff. As the days of March continue, the Bucs head into the heart of conference play that features home matches with North Florida and two-time defending tournament champion Jacksonville.

After three straight road matches to open April, ETSU returns home to the Buddy Hartsell Tennis courts to close out the regular season against regional rival Wofford, UNC-Asheville and Tennessee Tech.

SinglesAfter graduating both former Buc senior greats Olya Batsula and Elena Volobueva, the Bucs return an experienced lineup that boasts some of the top players in the Atlantic Sun.

“Throughout the fall season our team really improved,” said Brooks. “Hopefully our girls will continue that trend this spring. In order for us to be successful, our team is really going to have to push opponents physically, while forcing them to play their weakness throughout a match. Overall, I’m very please with this team. All the girls get along and have qualities that make good teams great. As a coach it’s great to see each girl pumping the others up during a match. In the years past we haven’t had that, but this team really reminds me of the 2006 championship team.”

At No. 1 singles, sophomore NCAA participant Yevgeniya Stupak returns as ETSU’s top player. The third-year player had one of the best single seasons in A-Sun history in 2008. Stupak again earned A-Sun First-Team honors, while becoming the first conference singles player to individually qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships last May.

“Yevgeniya was really coming into her own this fall,” said Brooks. “When she first started playing here at ETSU she was pretty much a baseline player, but now she’s able to efficiently cover all areas of the court. The thing that she does so well is to really take advantage of player weakness throughout a match. This fall she proved that by

winning three tournaments. Again I expect big things for Yevgeniya this season.”

Also returning for the Bucs is senior Tara Byrne who should hold down the No. 2 singles spot. If Byrne can stay healthy this spring the Tri-Cities native should have a chance to leave ETSU as the all-time winningest singles player in the history of the program. After finishing the 2008 season with a 27-12 overall record, Byrne sits less than 15 wins away from the all-time mark.

“Tara has improved every year,” said Brooks. “She seems to now be playing better all-around tennis by hitting more slices, while moving to the net. Tara has always been able to put pressure on players with her serve, but now she is able to really take advantage of certain shots with her court position. That’s a big advantage for her this spring.”

With a solid one-two punch at the top of the lineup Brooks should have the option to play the rest of his youthful but skilled squad in positions No. 3 through No. 6. Of the remaining players senior Vita Moskaliova enters the 2009 season with the most experience. After struggling a bit in 2008 the three-year letterwinner looks to return to old form.

“Vita is one of the most valuable pieces in our lineup this spring,” said Brooks. “During late in the fall Vita really looked like she was turning the corner back to her old self. If she can play well our team should really be successful.”

Also returning for the Bucs are junior Whitney Trotter and sophomores Tara Sheets and Andra Voinea. Trotter enters the season after winning over 40 percent of her matches last season, while Voinea and Sheets combined to produce A-Sun All-Freshman team honors in 2008.

“Tara can really be a key for our team if she can stay healthy,” said Brooks. “After having a great season last year Andra looks like a better, more complete player entering this year. Last season she looked like at freshman at times, but this year she looks like she is ready to take that next step to be a more dominate player. She really should be tough to beat. Whitney also is a key for this year’s squad. Again like Tara, staying away from

injuries is going to be huge. If she stays healthy then Whitney should be able to return to form and give us much-needed depth.”

As the 2009 season approaches the Bucs will have a trio of newcomers that joins coach Brook and the ETSU team.

Freshman Paula Jamie comes to Johnson City after having one of the top amateur careers in Spain. The Madrid native was ranked as one of Spain’s top-25 women’s singles amateurs in the entire nation.

“Since Paula has come in she has played great,” said Brooks. “The key for her is going to be balancing school and tennis. She is a very smart player but this happens to most freshmen in their first year of school. On talent alone Paula is one of our best players. At times in the fall she was beating some of our upperclassmen, so if she can stay organized on and off the court she can really be an asset to our squad.”

Also joining the Bucs is freshman Karina Kedzo,

who comes to the Tri-Cites from Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. Kedzo enters her first year of collegiate tennis after competing in a number of international tournaments that include the Venezuela Nationals.

“When Karina came in she was a bit out of tennis shape,” said Brooks. “She worked hard throughout the fall and really has improved over the last couple of months. She’s the type of player that is going to find a way to get the ball in. As the fall season went on she really was getting inside

her opponents’ head and once that happened the match was over. Karina really has the ability to charge the ball and give her opposition fits.”

The final ETSU newcomer will be local product Jessica Ratliff. The Tennessee High product comes over from Bristol as the eighth best women’s high school player in the state of Tennessee.

“Jessica is a player that I’ve watched develop over the last year,” said Brooks. “She’s a hard worker and once she gets adjusted to the speed of play she really can be a bonus as we move forward.”

Overall, coach Brooks and staff is pleased with all three newcomers this fall.

“This is by far the best freshman class I’ve had since I’ve been here at ETSU,” said Brooks. “They’re coming in higher than some of the classes we’ve signed in the past.”

DoublesUnlike singles play, the Bucs enter the season with most of its doubles teams well in place. Instead of featuring a No. 1 and No. 2 doubles team the Bucs instead have a pair of squads that could easily interchange as the season goes forward. Both the teams of Byrne/Kedzo and Stupak/Jamie really had an outstanding fall season, which in return gives the Bucs a large advantage in trying to take the doubles point during match play.

“We have two outstanding doubles teams,” said Brooks. “In the fall each team played some common opponents and I really couldn’t tell if one was better then the other. Last year we had a strong No. 1, when healthy, but injuries kept us from offering three solid teams who had not played together. Many times we didn’t know who would play with who just before a match started. Therefore we didn’t have a strong No. 2 or No. 3 doubles team. This year we have the option of playing either team at No.1 or No. 2. Both teams are really solid and play good tennis.”

Like in singles play, coach Brook should have plenty of depth and talent to choose for the No. 3 doubles position.

“No. 3 doubles is a tossup right now,” said Brooks. “We have a lot of players that can play with each other, which is another thing we haven’t had the last couple of years. Tara Sheets and Andra looked well at times, but at the same time Whitney, Jessica and Vita all bring something to the table, that depending on the match, could be a smarter play.”

Dr. Paul E. Stanton, Jr., became the eighth President of East Tennessee State University on January 1, 1997.

A native of Atlanta, Stanton earned a bachelor of arts in chemistry at Emory University in 1965 and was awarded an M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia four years later. His internship in rotating surgery was completed through Tampa General Hospital at the University of South Florida, where he was chosen from 23 interns to receive the Upjohn Intern of the Year Award in 1970.

Stanton went on to a surgical residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta from 1970-74 and then began a one-year fellowship in vascular surgery at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. He received board certification in general surgery in 1976 and gained special certification in general vascular surgery in 1983.

Between 1975-83, Stanton directed the Surgical Residency Education Program at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, where he also served as active attending physician (1975-85) and as director of the Blood Flow Lab (1976-85). An assistant clinical professor of surgery with the Medical College of Georgia (1980-85), he became Chief of Surgery at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in 1982 and assistant director of the Medical Education Department the following year. Stanton also co-directed the Georgia Baptist Medical Center/Medical College of Georgia Vascular Fellowship from 1980-85 and was an adjunct professor of medicine at Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy between 1982-85.

In 1985, Stanton came to Johnson City as director of the Division of Peripheral Vascular Surgery for the Veterans Administration Medical Center and ETSU’s College of Medicine (a position he held for six years) and served as associate professor of surgery at the university. The following year, he was named professor and chair of the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine. In 1988, he became Dean of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs at ETSU.

In November 1996, Stanton was selected as the university president by the Tennessee Board of Regents, ETSU’s governing board and the largest higher education system in the state as well as the sixth largest in the nation.

Stanton’s professional memberships are many, and his community and statewide service is extensive. He is also heavily involved in academic committees and advisory councils from ETSU to the national level.

He has authored over 80 articles for a variety of medical publications and several chapters for books, delivered over 100 scientific and poster presentations, worked to attract millions of dollars in grants to ETSU, and from 1988-95 served as associate editor of Vascular Surgery. A member of Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa, Stanton can be found in the Directory of Distinguished Americans for Achievement in Surgery, Men of Achievement, Outstanding Atlantans, and Who’s Who in the Southwest.

In 1997, then Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist appointed Stanton to the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). In 2002, Stanton was elected Vice Chairman of the SREB, which is America’s first interstate compact for education with 16 member states. He was re-elected Vice Chairman in 2003-2005.

Stanton co-chaired the Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia Economic Summit, which was held in May 1998. And, in 1999, he represented the university as a delegate in the All-America City competition that culminated in the Tri-Cities TN/VA becoming the nation’s first All-America City Region.

In January 2002, Stanton-Gerber Hall was dedicated on the grounds of the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, ETSU’s neighbor and partner. The $36 million basic sciences building represents federal-state cooperation,

consolidates medical school operations on one campus, and is named for Stanton and for the late Dr. Carl J. Gerber, who was then the VA center director, as they worked together to see this project to fruition.

For five consecutive years (2004-2008), Business Tennessee magazine has placed Stanton among the 100 most powerful people in the Volunteer State. With the support and challenge of Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, Stanton led the university and the region in a successful 2005 campaign to establish the ETSU College of Pharmacy, which opened in January 2007 with 72 students enrolled in its inaugural class. In 2008, the new school was named the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy.

In 2004, the Medical College of Georgia honored Stanton with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for professional achievement. He is also the recipient of the “Spirit Award,” presented locally by the Mountain States Health Alliance Foundation in recognition of his leadership in and contributions to the region.

During its 124th commencement ceremony in May 2005, Milligan College lauded Stanton with an honorary doctorate of administration degree, and, last January, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of The Chamber of Commerce serving Johnson City-Jonesborough-Washington County.

Stanton is married to the former Nancy Lynn Brumit, and the couple has two sons, Eric and Ryan, and one daughter, Shelley Stanton Canada; four grandsons, Matthew, Christopher, and Michael Stanton, and Grayson Paul Canada; and a granddaughter, Ava Stanton.

Dave Mullins became ETSU’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on April 14, 2003. Mullins had served as interim director since the previous December. In that time Mullins help lead the Bucs athletic department through a transition to the Atlantic Sun Conference. In his tenure ETSU has won the 2007-08 Bill Bibb Trophy for combined All Sports race, the 2007-08, Jesse C. Fletcher overall men’s sports race and in 2006-07, ETSU sweep both the all-sports trophy after being named the top men’s and women’s athletic program in the Atlantic Sun.

Prior to his promotion to AD, Mullins was a widely respected coach, leading the ETSU men’s tennis team from 1988-2002. In 2002, Mullins led the squad to tis second NCAA tournament appearance. Despite falling to Auburn in the first round, Mullins had many things to be proud of after looking back on the 2001-02 season. The SoCon Tournament crown was his fifth tournament championship and the program also boasted its fifth Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon Tournament in freshman Moises Serrano. However, these successes were modest when compared to ETSU’s List of accomplishments under Mullins’ direction.

Mullins coached 28 all-conference players during his tenure, en route to being named Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year five times. After Mullins began coaching the Bucs in 1988, ETSU has had numerous ITA nationally and regionally ranked players, including the school’s first All-American, in current men’s tennis coach Yaser Zaatini, who received the honor in 1992 and 1993. Mullins also had 18 Southern Conference singles championships, 11 doubles champs, and five Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year.

Mullins twice guided ETSU to back-to-back regular-season SoCon championships in 1995 and 1996 and again in 1999 and 2000. The Bucs have gone undefeated in the SoCon four times and from April 1998 through April 2000 they won 21 straight conference matches. In his 15 years of service, Mullins compiled an overall record of 237-103 (.697) and a conference mark of 85-24 (.780).

Besides mentoring athletic talent, Mullins built a reputation of recruiting student-athletes who maintained a high standard of excellence in the classroom. In 2002, the squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team for a second time (1999) and six of the team’s eight players managed a GPA of over 3.60 (4.0) including a 3.9 GPA in the fall of 2002. On top of all that, Mullins coached five players who earned Academic All-American honors.

Prior to the 1996 season, Mullins doubled as the head coach for the ETUS women’s tennis program. During his eight-year stint with the Lady Bucs, he posted a 98-73 overall mark (.573) and a 29-19 (.604) record in the conference. Mullins registered winning records in five of his last six seasons with the women’s tennis team, and was awarded the women’s SoCon Coach of the Year in 1989. Mullins earned his B.S., cum laude, in English from Samford University in 1968 and his master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

HYDROWORXWithout a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

BUCSPORTSThe Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

FLUROSCANThe “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREAThe general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC), ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual’s or team’s off-season conditioning program.

Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure, and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

teams2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to

coaches regarding coaching practices 3. Advising on the Training Process4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction

between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Women’s BasketballThe ETSU women’s basketball team went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history after posting a program-tying 21-win campaign. The Lady Bucs stormed through conference play with an impressive 14-2 record and followed that up with three straight wins in the Atlantic Sun Tournament to receive the league’s automatic bid to the Big Dance. Along the way Michele DeVault and Siarre Evans received First Team All-Atlantic Sun accolades; head coach Karen Kemp was tabbed Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Five Lady Buccaneer players were named A-Sun

All-Academic, including TaRonda Wiles – who also was named to the All-Tournament Team. Joining Wiles on the tournament team were DeVault and Evans as well as Tournament MVP Latisha Belcher. As a team, ETSU ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense (14th), steals per game (18th) and assists per game (19th); DeVault ranked 12th in three-point field-goal percentage and 23rd in three-point field goals per game. DeVault also set a new all-time record with 239 treys made for her career.

Men’s GolfFor the first time in school history, men’s golf became the only program at ETSU to ever compete in the NCAA Championships 20 times. Under the direction of head coach Fred Warren, the team built on its record number of NCAA appearances, while once again finishing with a trio of Top 20 national team rankings. In addition, senior Gareth Shaw was named PING All-American, marking the second straight year he has earned that honor.

Men’s TennisAfter winning the Atlantic Sun regular season and conference tournament for the second straight season, the ETSU men’s tennis team earned its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament. This time around the No. 7th regionally ranked Bucs added to its program’s storied history by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Notre Dame, 4-2, in Columbis, Ohio. Individually, junior Enrique Olivares earned All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Women’s Golf Women’s golf made history in 2007-08 by capturing the program’s first-ever conference title and earning its

first trip to the NCAA Championships. The Bucs picked the perfect place to win their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship, doing so on their home course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough. In addition, the Bucs watched sophomore Laura Jansone capture the A-Sun individual title as well, becoming the first woman to ever win a conference individual championship.

Olya Batsula Olya Batsula was

awarded the National ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, which goes to the women’s tennis player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team and who enhances the team’s performance and exemplifies the spirit of college tennis. Batsula was also chosen by the Atlantic Sun Conference to be the A-Sun nominee for the 18th Annual NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Batsula was a first-ever four-time all conference selection and leaves her ETSU career with 179 career victories, which is the third best mark in program history. Off the court Batsula graduated Magna Cum Laude, in May of 2008, and was a four-time member of the ITA Scholar Athlete team. Also Batsula was always active in the community throughout her ETSU career, helping out with the Boys and Girls Club, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Girls Inc., Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots. Even though Batsula was busy with academics and practices she still found time to give lessons to wheelchair-bound students and underprivileged kids. Batsula would even drive 20 minutes to Kingsport with racquets, balls and a net to give tennis lessons to kids who were interested in the sport, but had no one to teach them the game.

Yevgeniya StupakCurrent junior Yevgeniya Stupak finished the 2007 season with an individual regional ranking of 14th, becoming the first-ever ETSU women’s tennis player to be ranked in singles and doubles regionally at the same time. After claiming 24 victories, including wins over No. 39 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia and No. 17 Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt, Stupak became the first Lady Buc to qualify for the NCAA singles championship last May.

Gareth ShawShaw earned his second straight Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar award, becoming the first-ever ETSU player to be named to that list two years in a row. Paul HoilmanFirst baseman Paul Hoilman was selected to the “Louisville Slugger” Freshman All-America Team. The Johnson City native was the first freshman ETSU baseball player to receive national recognition in the school’s history. Hoilman was also named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team after an outstanding freshman campaign finishing tenth in the conference in batting average (.353), fifth in the conference in doubles (18), tied for eighth in home runs (9), ninth in RBIs, ninth in slugging (.598), ninth in total bases (110) and seventh in on base percentage (.442).
