2008-09 SWIMMING & DIVING OUTLOOK

FLORIDA GULF COAST SWIMMING & DIVING

“The Tradition Begins” was last year’s theme. However, earning second place at the Conference Championships and be-ing the top Atlantic Sun team during their inaugural season, the 2008-09 slogan should read, “The Tradition Continues.” With only one senior and 29 underclassmen, the team is young but determined. “I feel we have some great sophomores who can be awesome team leaders for this year and years to come,” said Coach Studd. “The incoming class of fourteen freshman and two transfers is outstanding; I can’t wait to get to work with them. They have had terrific summers with their club programs and are ready to challenge for a conference championship.”

The team set a high standard to follow last year in both the pool and the classroom, along with finishing the year ranked 18th in the Collegeswimming.com mid-major poll. The new team on campus also had eleven All Conference Academic members and was recognized as an Academic All-American Team by the College Swim Coaches Association. “It’s im-portant we do well in the classroom to compliment our success in the pool. At FGCU we have a President and an Athletic Director who care deeply about academics; the feeling is very ‘student first’ in student-athlete.”

FreestyleCourtney Gallo won both the 500 and 1650 conference titles last year and returns to captain the team once more. Her leadership in and out of the pool is key to the team’s success. “Courtney joined us as a junior last year and was coming off back-to-back 1650 conference titles in the MAC conference. She was always going to be a big factor for our new team; I was really excited how she dropped time with us last year, nine seconds in the mile and five seconds in the 500. She has an excellent work ethic and is not only a leader in the distance freestyle group but is a leader for our program.” Taylor Cooke is another distance standout returnee and Coach Studd is looking for big things from the multi-sport athlete. “Tay-lor is a great student-athlete. Not only was she on our 200 freestyle relay last year, but she scored in the 1650 and every freestyle distance in between. Cooke also runs cross country for FGCU, is a member of the US National junior triathlon team and is on the student athletic advisory council. She has a great positive attitude and has been training in Colorado Springs at altitude for six weeks prior to returning to school. No doubt she will be very fit at season start.” Rachael Rein is another returner who scored big for the Eagles in their last campaign. “Rein is extremely talented and can help us in a variety of areas: IM, back and free. I believe she is just scratching the surface of what can be achieved.”

All three, Courtney, Rachael and Taylor, are in-state swimmers. Coach explains that “Florida is always a top three re-cruiting state in the US. Over half of our team is from Florida and I want our program to be a place that Florida kids want to come. We are another great option for in-state coaches to send their swimmers to college.”

The incoming class also contains some fantastic freestylers. Leah Daniel, an Olympic Trials consolation finalist for Canada, also represented Team Canada at the North American Challenge Cup. “Leah was our top acquisition in the fall signing period; she can swim the 50 to the 1650 and comes highly recommend-ed. Daniel will assist in the relays as well as the middle and dis-tance freestyle events.” Several others joining the team may not consider freestyle their best stroke, but will compete for relay spots and race freestyle individually. “We have a lot of freesty-lers who can swim multiple events, which is great. For many of them freestyle is their second stroke but by their best times you wouldn’t know it!” Two of these include Victoria Cadge

and Rosy Murray, the English duo Studd went home to recruit. “Both of these young ladies will help us tremendously; between them they can swim any event. They both captained two of England’s most prestigious teams, Kelly College and Portsmouth Northsea; this says a lot about their leadership abilities and work ethic. I think they will be great addi-tions to the team.”

BreaststrokeThis is an area Studd and his staff worked hard to improve. On paper, Victoria Cadge will help the most in the 100 and 200 breast events. Kelly Novak, a sophomore transfer, and another new face in Shannon Carlin will add to the breaststroke artillery. But do not discount Catrina Silveira, the returning school record holder in both breast events, to challenge the newcomers. All of these ladies will contest for the highly sought after medley relay spot. “I hope the increased competition in the breaststroke events will help everyone improve. Using the theory… a rising tide lifts all ships.”

ButterflyMargie Chamberlin will lead the butterfly charge; the Iowa transfer has returned to her native Florida looking to improve on some im-pressive best times. After a great summer with her club team she looks ready to score big points for the Eagles this year. Studd com-mented, “Margie comes here ready to swim fast. She has been swim-ming long course since December and training with a very strong club team; I know she will have the necessary background to improve at FGCU.” Freshman Alex Cianci from Plantation, FL will be look-ing to push her way into helping the team. Cianci had some big drops at the long course spring sectional meet in March and hopes to show she can race just as well in the yards format. Look too for returner

Viktoria Hyddmark and newcomers Rosy Murray and Teri Lytle to race some fast fly. Backstroke

Conference swimmer of the year Viktoria Hyddmark returns after a great summer where she placed 6th and 7th at Swed-ish National Championships in the 200 and 100 back respectively. The backstroke group is strong and deep with Rachael Rein, Katie Oke, Katy Loubris and new ladies Margrete Ulvestad and Rosy Murray. “As with last year, again this will be one of our strongest areas. We were happy to 1-2 Penn State in the 200 back last January with Hyddmark and Rein; add the new talent such as Ulvestad and we really have exciting prospects.”

Individual MedleyAfter completing a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 IM and earning second place points in the 400 IM at the conference champs, you would not think the Eagles need to add more strength in the IM discipline, but they did. Both Rosy Murray and Victoria Cadge on paper look the strongest of the new class. “Last year’s 1-2-3 with Hyddmark, Rein and Oke on the first night was so exciting and really set the stage for a great conference meet. All three swim it quite differently with varying strengths and weaknesses which made it a fun race. Add in newcomers Murray and Cadge along with the returners and we are going to have an incredible group of IM’ers.”

DivingReturning all three divers from last year and adding two solid performers makes the Eagle divers a force to reckon with. Karmin McNamara had two second place finishes at conference last season while Sarah McCollough earned a seventh and a fourth. Gaby Shaw rounds out the returners with two top nine conference finishes under her belt. Transfer Chloe Erb and freshman Stephanie Young look to add depth to the diving squad with strong 1M & 3M lists. Coach Stringham is excited about the 2008-09 sea-son and hopes to improve everyone’s grace and power on the boards while maintaining strong mental execution.

2008-09 COACHING STAFF

Neal Studd is entering his second season as the women’s swimming and diving head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. Studd’s first head coaching season was highlighted with a second place finish at the Costal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) conference cham-pionships where his team was first amongst all Atlantic Sun squads. Along with earning more gold medals than any other school (seven), the Eagles produced the Rookie Swimmer of the year and the Confer-ence swimmer of the year. His guidance led to nine CCSA All-con-

ference 1st team members and eleven All-Conference Academic team members. The squad concluded the year ranked 18th in the Collegeswimming.com NCAA Division I mid-major pole and was recognized as an Academic All American Team by the College Swim Coaches Association.

Studd was selected to begin the women’s swimming and diving program at FGCU in July of 2006. Prior to joining the athletic department here, he spent eight seasons with the Florida Atlantic University swimming staff. He rejoined the team in the fall of 1999 after a successful one-year stint with the Wall Street firm of Morgan Stanley following an outstanding collegiate swimming career at FAU.

While he enjoyed the business world, he elected to return to college, where he could work on a master’s degree in business. Upon his return, Studd began working with the sprinters, a group that has rewritten the FAU record books as well as many of the records that Studd previously held. During the last seven seasons, several sprinters have won NIC and Sun Belt Championship titles, achieved NCAA cuts and placed on national teams, including one athlete who competed in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials and one who qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

In 2004, the women’s freestyle relays rewrote the NIC conference records, while a freshman qualified for the NCAA Championship in the breaststroke. In 2005, the men’s 200 medley relay posted a school and Sun Belt Conference record. A sprinter also competed in the 2005 World University Games.

As an FAU swimmer (1994-98), Studd held several varsity records, served as the men’s captain and was a National Independent Confer-ence champion and two-time Olympic Trials qualifier. The Ipswich native commenced swimming at an early age and held no less than 12 county (state) records. He was the National Junior Champion and the captain of the National Junior Team. Studd was also the 200-meter freestyle National Junior Championship record holder.

Studd is a 1998 graduate of FAU with a B.S. in Finance, and received his MBA from FAU in 2002.

Florida Gulf Coast University, with its innovative programs, technology friendly campus, and outstanding faculty, is one of the most exciting educational environments in America.

FGCU, a member of the State University System of Florida, is a comprehensive university created to address the educational needs of the rapidly growing Southwest Florida population. Classrooms showcase state-of-the-art multimedia instructional systems that feature Internet access, document cameras, and audio and video presentations.

Florida Gulf Coast University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. FGCU received initial

accreditation by SACS in 1999.

The history of Florida Gulf Coast University is a visionary one built on support for providing higher education opportunities in Southwest Florida. Area citizens began the initiative to bring a state university to this part of Florida, and their early requests were quickly supported by elected officials at the local and state levels. With support from the Florida Board of Regents and the full Florida Legislature, a new university was born.

The Board of Regents formally recommended in January 1991 the development of Florida’s tenth state university to be located in Southwest Florida; and, in May 1991, then Governor Lawton Chiles signed the legislation authorizing the new university. Southwest Florida’s support for a university was never more evident than during the next year, when private landowners offered more than 20 gift sites for the university campus. In early 1992, the Board of Regents selected the site offered by Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico, Inc. of 760 acres of land located just east of Interstate 75 between Alico and Corkscrew Roads.

Roy McTarnaghan was named founding university president in April 1993. Initial staff were hired that summer, and the university’s academic and campus planning began in earnest. Plans for the first phase of campus construction were unveiled in February 1994; and shortly thereafter, the Florida Legislature named the institution as Florida Gulf Coast University. The vision for the university was one which would address emerging higher education needs for the 21st century, including the use of technology in the learning/teaching process and multi-year contracts as an alternative to faculty tenure. The Board of Regents approved an agreement in May 1995 with the United Faculty of Florida allowing FGCU to offer a contract system for faculty.

Campus groundbreaking was held on November 28, 1995, with more than 600 people participating in the celebratory event for Southwest Florida. With aggressive academic program and campus development schedules slated to culminate in an opening day of August 25, 1997, the early staff and faculty were busy meeting deadlines every month. Inaugural degree programs were approved by the Board of Regents in March 1996. The FGCU Foundation, a private fundraising arm of the university, gained extraordinary financial support for an institution which at the time could only be seen on a drawing board. Faculty throughout the country were attracted to FGCU for the opportunity to offer higher education in new and innovative ways.

The first FGCU student, Mariana Coto, was admitted in January 1997; and she participated in the historic ribbon cutting on the university’s August 25, 1997 opening day. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools awarded FGCU accreditation candidacy later that year, and a comprehensive self-study was launched. The first commencement was held in May 1998, with 81 FGCU graduates. In August 1998, the first phase of student housing opened. In September, Founding President McTarnaghan announced his intention to step down on May 1, 1999.FGCU’s second commencement ceremonies, held May 1999, marked the last official act of the founding president, as well as the graduation of 417 students. The Board of Regents launched a national search held during the spring and summer for FGCU’s second president; and the university received official notification in June 1999 that it had achieved, in record time, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In July 1999, the Board of Regents named William C. Merwin as FGCU’s second president. President Merwin arrived on campus for his first day on September 16, 1999. He immediately initiated a highly participatory strategic planning process for students, faculty, and staff to carry the young institution to its next stage of development.

As FGCU moves forward, student applications and admissions are dramatically increasing; campus construction of academic and support buildings remains aggressive; an athletics program and other new initiatives are being launched; new degree programs are being added; the Foundation’s private fundraising continues to be successful; and the excitement level for FGCU’s future is high.

Athletic director - Western Maryland ‘84

McAloose has been responsible for literally building the athletic program at FGCU from the ground floor.

He has led the design and development of over $30 million in new facilities. The 4,500-seat Alico Arena, home to volleyball, women’s basketball and men’s basketball, opened to rave reviews in the fall of 2002. The FGCU Baseball/Softball Complex features 1,250-seat Swanson Stadium and a 500-seat softball facility that opened in spring 2003.

The Eagles also boast a 12-court lighted tennis complex that hosted its third straight ITA National Small College Tennis Championships, and a state-of-the-art Aquatics Center in partnership with Lee County government. A soccer stadium and a new baseball, softball, and soccer clubhouse (consisting of locker rooms, concession stand, offices and hospitality area) are currently under construction

Carl McAloose

Carl McAloose enters his ninth year as the director of intercollegiate Athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University. he was named to his current post by FGCU president William Merwin in July of 2000.

and will be completed in December. McAloose was the driving force in FGCU’s unprecedented move to a full-fledged member of NCAA Divison II just four years after the program debuted. FGCU began its athletic program with men’s and women’s golf and tennis in the fall of 2000. Men’s and women’s basketball and cross country teams, as well as baseball and softball were added for 2002-03 and volleyball became the 11th sport in the fall of 2004. Women’s swimming, men’s soccer and women’s soccer began play in Fall 2007.

The Eagles began play as a member of Division II in 2004-05. Under McAloose’s leadership FGCU stepped up to NCAA Division I in Fall 2007 and joined the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Under the guidance of a talented coaching staff, FGCU has enjoyed tremendous success both in the classroom and on the field of play. FGCU student-athletes have achieved above a 3.1 GPA in each of the past 14 semesters, and numerous athletes have won national academic awards. In their first season of NCAA post-season eligibility (2005-06), the Eagles had six of its 11 teams represented at NCAA Division II championship events and during the 2006-07 season 10 of 11 FGCU sports were represented in the NCAA tournament, and in 2007-08 FGCU had representation deep in the NCAA tournaments by many teams and had two teams ranked #1 in the country. FGCU teams have posted an overall winning percentage of over .750 during the past seven years.

Striving to be a good community partner has been a mission for FGCU athletics under McAloose. Through partnerships with area schools, the Eagles Math Program and Elementary Reading Program have been popular with Southwest Florida youngsters, touching the lives of over 10,000 elementary school children in the last five years. During the 2006-07 season FGCU student-athletes participated in over 7,500 hours of community service

Prior to joining FGCU, McAloose was commissioner of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference from 1996 to 2000, where he was instrumental in the development of the inaugural GLVC basketball tournaments and 17 total championship events.

From 1992 to 1996, he served as assistant commissioner of the Division I Big South Conference. He has also served as Associate Athletic Director at Division I Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and West Chester University in Pennsylvania. McAloose was also the head coach for men’s and women’s tennis at West Chester. In addition, McAloose has served as the Sports Information Director at Guilford College and Frostburg State University.

Recognized as one of the top leaders in the NCAA Division II, McAloose has been an active member of several prominent NCAA committees. He has been a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council, the NCAA legislative committee, the NCAA Amateur Clearinghouse Committee, and the Division II Men’s Basketball South Region Committee.

A native of Cumberland, Maryland, he received his bachelor’s degree in Education from Western Maryland College and master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Frostburg (MD) State.

He and his wife Barb, an exercise physiology instructor at FGCU, reside in Fort Myers with their children Krista, Savannah and Hunter.

Why eAGles The eagle was adopted as the official symbol to reflect FGCU’s mission and purpose. The eagle serves to identify not only the physical environment of Southwest Florida but also the University’s relationship with it. The eagle embodies the characteristics of freedom, strength, spirit, intelligence, grace and the pursuit of excellence. It is master of its environment but also an integral part of it. It survives and prospers only in balance with the environment

sChool ColoRs FGCU’s Founding President Roy McTarnaghan selected emerald green and cobalt blue as symbols of the earth and water, in keeping with FGCU’s environmental mission.

The building sits just east of Alico Arena’s parking lot and north of the recently completed soccer field. The grand opening took place February 28, 2008.

The 20,000-square-foot complex houses coaches’ offices, locker rooms, showers, laundry facilities, lounge and study space for the men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and softball teams, and offices for the men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and the women’s swimming and diving teams.

A spot that’s likely to be in great demand for all sorts of events is the spacious VIP suite with an attached kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the baseball field. It can accommodate up to about 80 people for a broad range of activities, including sporting event receptions and conferences requiring PowerPoint presentations.

Besides well-appointed locker rooms and offices, there are two rooms devoted to study, a vital aspect of the Athletics program. Student-athletes must maintain high GPA’s in order to play.

Incorporated in 1886, Fort Myers is the center of a popular tourist area in Southwest Florida and the seat of Lee County. It is located about 120 miles south of Tampa at the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caloosahatchee River. Fort Myers was the frequent winter home of Thomas Edison and is the current home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins spring training camps.

The first known resident of what is now Fort Myers was Manuel Gonzalez, a Spaniard from the province of Asturias, who came via Cuba in the 19th century. Typical architecture in downtown Fort Myers. Fort Myers, built in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians that were massacring the area's few settlers, was named after Col. Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed in Florida for seven years and was the son-in-law of the fort's establisher and commander. In 1858, after years of elusive battle, Chief Billy Bowlegs and his warriors were persuaded to surrender and move west, and the fort was abandoned. Billy's Creek, which flows into the Caloosahatchee River and runs between The Beau Rivage Condominiums and Alta Mar, was named after a temporary camp where Billy Bowlegs and his men awaited ships to take them west.

The fort was abandoned until 1863 when a small number of Federal troops re-occupied the fort during the Civil War. In 1865 the fort was attacked unsuccessfully by a very small group of Confederates. After the war, the fort was again deserted.

The first settlers arrived in 1866, but it wasn't until 1882 when the city experienced a significant influx of settlers. By 1885, when Fort Myers was incorporated, it was the second largest city only to Tampa on Florida's west coast south of Cedar Key even larger than Clearwater and Sarasota, also growing cities at the time.

Fort Myers first became a nationally known winter resort with the building of The Royal Palm Hotel in 1898. But what really sparked the city's growth was the construction of the Tamiami Trail Bridge built across the Caloosahatchee River in 1924. After the bridge's construction, the city experienced its first real estate boom and many subdivisions sprouted around the city.

• The home of the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates • The home of the Fort Myers Miracle baseball club of the Florida State League, and is the spring training locale for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox.

• The home of three minor league sports teams. The Florida Everblades (ECHL hockey team), Florida Firecats (Arena Football League 2 team) and Florida Stingrays (AIFA indoor football team).

• The home to over 50 of Southwest Florida's renowned 130 public and private golf courses. (*Fort Myers Area - Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Estero, Lehigh Acres and Sanibel Island)

Famous people that call the Fort Myers Area home

City of Fort MyersThe Florida of days long past, with unspoiled white sand beaches, exotic wildlife and lush subtropical foliage, still can be found on The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel in southwest Florida.

Known as Florida’s tropical island getaway, this paradise is a favorite vacation spot because of its feel of old Florida that no longer exists in many areas. In addition to the beautiful natural environment,

active travelers are pleased to find an abundance of golf, tennis and watersports, as well as some unusual attractions. Lee County embraces nine distinct areas, each with its own unique character. Best known are Sanibel and Captiva islands, connected to the mainland by an alluring three-mile-long causeway and, to each other, by a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bridge at Blind Pass.

Sanibel is known worldwide for its shelling. More than 400 varieties of shells litter the beaches, and particularly can be found after an especially high or low tide. For most visitors, however, shelling is merely a delightful excuse to enjoy hours of sun worshipping along some of the finest shoreline in North America. Interesting shops, restaurants, and art galleries dot the road from the Sanibel Lighthouse to Tarpon Bay Road.

On the way to Captiva Island, located toward Sanibel’s northern tip, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home to many exotic species of birds and plants. A four-mile drive with access to walking and canoe/kayak trails offers outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities. The refuge occupies more than half the island.

The main attraction on Captiva is that there are none. Many people wile away the hours in one outdoor endeavor or another. It was here that Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of the famous aviator, wrote her best-selling book, “A Gift from the Sea.”

Further south, Estero Island, home of Fort Myers Beach, long has been recognized as one of the “world’s safest beaches” because of its gently sloping shoreline. The sand is particularly soft and white, akin to powdered sugar. Especially suited for family vacations, Estero offers every imaginable water toy, from windsurfer to catamaran and parasailing. Numerous marinas operate boating and fishing charters. Local restaurants benefit from the catch, which generally includes red snapper and grouper.

Anyone suffering from island fever can find instant relief by paying a call to the “City of Palms,” in Fort Myers, with its charming downtown historic district and expanding hub of urban activity that extends to shopping malls, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Inventor Thomas Edison and his friend, automobile

manufacturer Henry Ford, decided early on to make their winter homes in Fort Myers. Today visitors tour their neighboring estates with Edison’s botanical gardens, laboratory and museum.

During Edison’s 46 winters in Fort Myers, he and his wife Mina hosted well-known house guests like industrialist Harvey Firestone, President Herbert Hoover and cereal king John Harvey Kellogg.

Henry Ford purchased his quaint home, “Mangoes,” in 1916 to spend the winter months visiting Edison. The two properties were separated by a fence the two families named “The Friendship Gate.”

Other in-town attractions include the Southwest Florida Historical Museum, downtown river cruises, and the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. Shell Factory in North Fort Myers and Eden Vineyards, the country’s southernmost bonded winery, to the east are also popular stops. For the sports minded, public golf courses and tennis courts make southwest Florida some of the best playing turf in the state.
