CONCORDIA CHICAGO VS. OLIVET

MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

Welcome to t he 112 th yea r o fM ich igan In te rco l l eg ia te A th le t i cAssoc ia t ion foo tba l l compet i t i on . Onbehalf of each of our member institutions,student-athletes, coaches, faculty andadministrators, I hope you enjoy today’sgame and festivities.

While watching the contest, I wouldalso encourage you to exercise a positivespirit of sportsmanship toward all gameparticipants and officials. We in the MIAAare signatories to the NCAA Division III

sportsmanship initiative - “Be Loud, Be Proud, Be Positive.” Allyou can do in support of these principles contributes to a morec iv i l , f un - f i l l ed and respec t fu l compet i t i ve env i ronment ;consistent with our league tradit ions as the nation’s oldestathletic conference.

The 2009 season again promises to be very competitive, with the rekindling of traditional rivalries. We continue to seebalance across our conference and expect the tit le to be indispute right up until the final games in November.

The MIAA had another outs tanding year in 2008-09,featuring individual national champions in swimming and divingtrack and field, and individual athletes earning All-Americanhonors in virtually all of our 18 sports. Academically, 55 of our128 teams were recipients of the conference team GPA awardfor maintaining a cumulative 3.3 average, and more than 930varsity letterwinners earned Honor Roll of Athlete Awards formaintaining at least a 3.5 GPA. Seventy-f ive letterwinnersreceived recognition for achieving Honor Roll status all four yearsat their institutions. Observing this level of performance both“on the field” and “in the classroom” demonstrates the conceptof the student-athlete, a philosophy we in the MIAA value andwhich truly describes our participants.

With this rich educational tradition, commitment to athleticexcel lence and our dedicat ion to ath let ics as par t o f theeducational mission of each college, the MIAA remains thepremier Division III conference in the United States.
