It will be the home opener for Concordia, who fell 27-24 at #20 Sioux Falls while Upper Iowa fell short in a 48-45 shootout at home in Fay- ette, Iowa to Augustana. BILLY BROWN, JR. DAY On Wednesday, June 13, 2018, Concordia’s football team and campus community was forced to say goodbye to Billy Brown, Jr. He was a consistent contributor and a senior starting line- backer in the 2017 season. He had his top year as a college football player last year, posting 56 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and fumble recovery. Across his four years on the field, he played in 38 games for the Golden Bears, making 95 tackles with 6.5 for loss and a pair of sacks. Following his football career, Brown completed his degree in sport management and was aiming to attend graduate school. From his obituary: In addition to his parents, Billy Brown Sr. and Tracy (Edward) Cagle, he leaves to cherish his precious memo- ries, four brothers, Julius Cagle of Houston, TX, Semaj Brown of O’Fallon, IL, and Timothy (Trinity) Jones Jr. and Jakari Rob- ertson, both of Peoria; one sister, Brandi Anderson of College Park, GA; grandmother, Janettee Proctor of Peoria; and a host of other family members and friends. In 2018, senior defensive back Brandon Russell will wear Billy’s #26 in honor of his late friend. Head coach Shannon Currier has stated his desire to select a player who fits what Billy meant to the program to wear #26 in future seasons to give deeper meaning to Billy’s legacy to Concordia football. 2018 TEAM CAPTAINS Concordia head coach Shannon Currier has announced plans to have rotating team captains each week throughout the fall season, starting with the first week of fall training camp. Cap- tains will be selected by the coaching staff based on perfor- mance on the field and as a leader in practice, meetings and in general day-to-day activities. In week two, senior quarterback Dom McKinzy and junior de- fensive lineman Jackson Dobbs repeat as game captains and are joined by sophomore running back Shaq Johnson and sophomore linebacker Andy Aune. In week one at USF, McKinzy and Dobbs were joined by juniors Dylan Wood (DL) and Rich Kelly (OL). SERIES NOTES: CONCORDIA 8, UPPER IOWA 4 The Golden Bears won the first seven and seven of the first eight meetings between the programs in a series that began in 2006. The teams have played every year since, with Concordia holding a 5-1 record in home games between Griffin Stadium (2007, 2008) and Sea Foam Stadium (2009-present). UIU’s only win in four trips to Concordia’s new stadium came in their list trip to St. Paul, a 41-21 loss for the Bears in 2016. Last year, Upper Iowa made it three in a row and four of the last five with a 34-29 win in Fayette. Half of the contests in the all-time series have been decided by one score or less. Head coach Shannon Currier is 0-2 all-time against Upper Iowa. LAST MEETING, 2017: UPPER IOWA 34, CONCORDIA 29 In week six last season, the Golden Bears’ road comeback at- tempt fell short with three straight incomplete passes from the UIU 9 yard line to turn the ball over on downs with 1:45 to play. Concordia had trailed 14-0 by late in the second quarter, rallying for a 16-14 lead late in the third. The Peacocks went up by dou- ble-digits again in the fourth, 34-22 with 9:35 to play on a punt return touchdown before CSP’s late rally fell nine yards short. Facing a Peacock secondary that entered the game ranked fourth in the country in passing yards allowed (117.4), quar- terback Ron Johnson completed 23-44 for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He connected with wide receiver Marcus Gustaveson nine times for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Darnell Rolle also had a strong performance with 126 combined yards, run- ning for 86 yards on 21 carries while adding 3-40 through the air. 2018 CSP FOOTBALL | WEEK 2 | VS UPPER IOWA | SEPT 8, 12 P.M. | SEA FOAM STADIUM | ST. PAUL, MINN.

174 yards on 10-21 passing but the Peacocks found 245 rushing yards to CSP’s 121.

UIU quarterback Brent Lammers was 10-21 for 174 and two touchdowns and also led the ground game with 162 yards on 28 attempts with another score. Ryan Parmely added 22 carries for 79 yards and Jarred Edmonds had four catches for 70 yards and both of Lammers’ touchdowns.

Dylan Wood was a force on defense with three of his nine tack-les coming behind the line of scrimmage and Chris Garrett added a pair of sacks and tackles for loss among his eight tackles.

Tate Thompson led the UIU defense with eight tackles, two coming for loss with 1.5 sacks.

LAST WEEK: #20 SIOUX FALLS 27, CONCORDIA 24Just over a week ago in a Thursday night season opener, the Golden Bears fell just short of defeating #20 Sioux Fall. After kicker Jonas Schenderlein converted a 35-yard field goal with 32 seconds to go, CSP lead 24-20. The Cougars responded with a four-play, 60-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left in the game to claim the victory, 27-24.

In his first game as a Golden Bear, senior quarterback Dom McK-inzy had a strong showing, going 19-32 with 236 yards and three touchdowns. His top target was junior receiver Marcus Gus-taveson, who compiled 96 yards on five catches, including one touchdown grab. Sophomore running back Shaq Johnson led the ground attack for the Golden bears, racking up 66 yards on 17 carries. Johnson was also a key part of the passing game, catch-ing four passes for 23 yards, including two receiving touchdowns.

A group of redshirt freshman had a big impact on defense for the Golden Bears in Week 1. Jake Portz tied for the team lead with seven tackles and a sack. Defensive backs Marcus Haskins and Parker Powers both intercepted a pass, with Haskins also collecting five solo tackles. Defensive lineman Shawn Aarhus also recorded a sack and a forced fumble on the evening.

Sioux Falls scored on the first drive of the game to go up 7-0, but the Golden Bears held the Cougars scoreless for the rest of the half. Concordia answered back in the second quarter with two touchdowns, both seven-yard scoring strikes from McKinzy to the running back Johnson to give the Golden Bears the lead at the half,14-7.

The Cougars started the second half strong, scoring a 35-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter and a nine-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth. However, Sioux Falls could not convert the extra point, allowing the Golden Bears to take the a 21-20 lead in the fourth when McKinzy connected with Gustaveson on a 33-yard pass and Schenderlein booted the PAT through the uprights.

After a Sioux Falls drive ended with a Dylan Wood sack, CSP got the ball back with 5:50 to go in the game. A ten-play, 33-yard drive got Schenderlein in range for the field goal and gave CSP the 24-20 lead with just over half a minute left in the game. Sioux Falls returned the kickoff to the 40-yard line before ex-ecuting their game winning drive in 26 seconds.

The Golden bears also produced on special teams as sophomore Jake Shepley made his debut at punter and averaged 47.3 yards on six kicks with a long of 66 that rolled inside the five. Schender-lein was also 3-3 on PAT’s and converted on his one field goal.

Concordia won the turnover battle 3-2, scoring 14 points off of Cougar mishaps while USF was unable to turn either into points. Concordia has lost 12 straight games to the Cougars, but the three point margin of defeat was the smallest they have had.

MEET THE STARTING QUARTERBACK: DOM MCKINZYSenior graduate transfer Dom McKinzy (full name Dimonic Rhoden-McKinzy) outlasted incumbent junior Maxon Hutton (7 starts in 2017) and junior Alabama A&M transfer Jared Ols-gaard in a solid three way competition.

He opened his CSP career with a strong performance, complet-ing 19-of-32 for 236 yards and three touchdowns. He was inter-cepted and sacked just once in the game and had a pair of third down touchdown passes.

McKinzy, a Kansas City, Kansas native, started his career at the University of Minnesota where he redshirted before transfer-ring to Hutchinson Community College (Kan.). From there, he went to Northeastern State (Okla.) in the MIAA where he was an All-MIAA honorable mention quarterback. In parts of two seasons, McKinzy passed for over 3,600 yards in 15 games with four 300-yard performances. In two meetings against Pittsburg State, McKinzy passed for 311 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions in 2016 and 323 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions in 2017.

Hutton topped 1,000 yards and had six touchdowns in 2017, adding 234 rushing and another score while playing in and starting seven games before his season ended in week nine with an injury.

Olsgaard earned his way to the Division I ranks by putting to-gether an NJCAA All-Region XIII season at Minnesota State CTC (Fergus Falls), earning MCAC Player of the Year honors with 2,463 yards in eight games (307.9/game) with 24 touchdowns.

SHAQ EMERGES IN CROWDED BACKFIELDSophomore Shaq Johnson picked up where he left off last sea-son, getting in the end zone twice for the second straight game with a pair of 7 yard receiving touchdowns in the second quar-ter, both on the third down, at #20 Sioux Falls in the 2018 open-er. He finished with 89 combined yards (17-66 rush, 4-23 rec).

His two receiving touchdown performance matches Concor-dia’s Division II record for most receiving touchdowns in a single season by a running back. He burst onto the scene in the 2017 season finale win over SMSU with 17-175 rushing and a pair of touchdowns as well as a 63 yard touchdown pass. He finished his freshman year with 46-241 and team-highs of 5.2 per carry and three rushing TDs.

Last season’s leading rusher, Darnell Rolle, is on the mend and did not participate in the season opener and is not listed on the week two 2-deep against Upper Iowa. Rolle had a pair of 100-yard rushing games and another combined 100 yard game. He had 627 yards on 172 carries a year ago.

Sophomore Lajuan Preston, like Johnson and Rolle, is also from Florida. Preston had eight carries for 24 yards including a 14 yard run on a 4th and 1 play. Last year as a true freshman, Pres-ton had 32 carries for 132 yards.

Aside from the three Florida returners, the staff added three Division I transfers: Jeremiah Pierce-Johnson from Akron, Gar-rett Gardner from Wyoming and Andre Eubanks from Missis-sippi Valley State. Pierce-Johnson and Gardner were featured multiple times in short yardage at Sioux Falls.

Additionally, Concordia picked up Northwest Missouri State transfer Emanuel Jones who rushed for over 600 yards and 11 touchdowns in his three years for the Bearcats that also included a pair of undefeated NCAA Division II championship campaigns. He was the team’s leading ball carrier in last year’s playoff loss, and had key carries in all three playoff runs.

Jones, a late addition in camp, has adjusted quickly and re-ceived three carries and a reception at Sioux Falls for a total of 16 yards including a long run of nine.

BALL CONTROL PLAYS KEY ROLE AT #20 SIOUX FALLSDespite taking a heart breaking 27-24 loss at #20 Sioux Falls in the 2018 opener, Concordia was solid in ball control on the Cougars’ home turf, controlling the ball for 33:06 to USF’s 26:54.

Additionally, Concordia forced three turnovers: interceptions by redshirt freshmen defensive backs Marcus Haskins and Parker Powers as well as a fumble recovery on a missed punt snap by redshirt freshman defensive end Shawn Aarhus, who also had a sack, tackle for loss and forced fumble in a big debut.

The team allowed just one sack and 14 lost yards on five total tackles for loss and the offense committed just one of the two team turnovers, with the other coming on a lateral on the final kickoff with no time remaining. Concordia did not allow the Cougars to score on either turnover, while creating 14 points off the three USF mistakes.

SCHENDERLEIN NABS MITCHELL AWARD PRESEASON HONORThe Golden Bears return one of the top kickers in the country in Jonas Schenderlein who was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Kickoff Watch List after being a national final-ist for the honor last year.

Despite the national recognition from the Mitchell Award, Schenderlein was not an All-NSIC kicker as the NSIC South Divi-sion had some of the top statistical kicker seasons in the coun-try in 2017, including Schenderlein.

Originally the eighth head coach of Concordia football in 2000, Shannon Currier returned to lead the program for his second stint in December, 2015.

He s second in program history in both total victories and career win-ning percentage.

In his first stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the pro-gram its first NSIC Championship in 2003 when he was named NSIC

Coach of the Year. The conference title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the first postseason game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURFThe team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to teams of the era as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home vic-tories down the street at Griffin Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 season, finally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s first four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his first and last nine home games.

He opened his return to the program with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a former school record 8-game overall losing streak.

CAREER AT TRUMANFollowing the program’s 2003 NSIC Championship run, Currier ac-cepted the head coach position at Truman (State) University where he turned a losing program into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his third and fourth seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, finishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINESFollowing his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his final year with the company.

NSIC BACKGROUND & ST. PAUL PRIVATE EDUCATIONHe arrived at Concordia in 1999 as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji State as an offensive graduate assistant where earned his mas-

ter’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

GUSTAVESON LEADS WIDE RECEIVERSWide receiver Marcus Gustaveson as established himself as Concordia’s top target as a three year starter, boasting four ca-reer 100-yard performances.

In the season opener at #20 Sioux Falls, Gustaveson hauled in five catches for 96 yards and a 33 yard touchdown to put CSP ahead 21-20 with under eight minutes to play. He also had a long of 38 in the game.

In three seasons, he’s amassed 1,316 yards on 89 catches with 15 touchdowns. Last year, he led the Golden Bears in receptions (43), yards (656), yards per catch (15.3) and touchdowns (9) and increased his production in all four areas as a sophomore.

Last year against Upper Iowa, he had a career-high three receiv-ing touchdowns on nine catches for 93 yards.

Joining the mix is junior college transfer MJ Williams who was a 2016 All-California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and All-Golden Coast Conference performer, leading the league with 960 yards while ranking second in catches (56) and touchdowns (11).

While Williams was shut out of the stat sheet, his presence helped open things up for CSP’s slot receivers as senior Jake Tanner had 4-69 with a long of 38 in the first half and sopho-more Keyon Walters had 4-36 with a big 3rd and 16 reception in the fourth quarter.

Walters also had a big 24 yard punt return in the fourth quarter, setting the offense up with the ball at the 50 yard line with un-der six minutes to play prior to his big third down catch.

OFF. LINE GROWS IN STRENGTH, CONTINUITYWhen head coach Shannon Currier was hired in December, 2015 he inherited four returning offensive linemen. In he two seasons since, the Golden Bears provided the young offensive line a chance to compete and play early in their careers, gaining valuable experience despite the tough physical challenge.

Now the team features more depth, more experience, more strength & physicality and most importantly, more continuity. Three starters return up front: senior left tackle Terrell Taylor, junior left guard Rich Kelly and junior right guard Ethan Aune. They are joined by redshirt freshman center Matthew Mont-gomery at and sophomore right tackle Cris Wasylciw.

Further, the program features experienced depth behind the front five with players who have started in the past like senior Samuel Kessler and sophomore Tanner Haechten who are pri-marily guards but able to play multiple spots on the line. Senior Davarus Clark has had his best fall camp and redshirt freshman Tyson Kauffman has impressed at the tackle position.

In week one, the unit allowed just one sack and a total of 14 lost yards on five USF tackles for loss, limiting impact plays of one of Division II’s top defenses from the 2017 season.

WALLISCH EMERGES AS DEFENSIVE STOPPER AT CBJunior Dion Wallisch has emerged as one of the top defensive players on the team and is coming off an All-NSIC South Divi-sion honorable mention season in his first year at CSP.

Wallisch opened the 2018 season with five tackles (four solo) at #20 Sioux Falls, helping the secondary hold the Cougars to just 12-22 passing for 196 yards.

While he was able to fill the stat sheet in 2017 with 13 pass breakups, a pair of interceptions, two forced fumbles and a recovery, he was also impressive with the stats that *weren’t* recorded. He shut down top receivers on a consistent basis in 2017 including MSU Moorhead standout Damon Gibson.

With a prep wrestling background, Wallisch is also a sound tackler as he finished the year third on the team with 58 tackles. He will also be a key member of the kick return team where he produced a 23.8 average last year.

As a redshirt freshman at Minnesota Crookston in 2015, he was fourth on the team with 56 tackles including 4.5 for loss. He missed he 2016 season at UMC due to medical reasons and joined CSP the following spring semester.

Redshirt freshman Marcus Haskins started at the opposite cor-ner, making five solo tackles, adding an interception and a big downfield pass breakup.

Sophomore Lorenzo Kendricks gained quality experience as a true freshman last year, working his way into a starting role with four starts between the safety and corner spots. He finished his first year with 25 tackles, a pair of pass breakups and forced a fumble against USF.

RUSSELL TO WEAR #26 TO HONOR LATE FRIEND BILLY BROWNThe only senior starter in the two deep is Brandon Russell at strong safety. The veteran defensive back has changed jersey numbers from 23 to 26 to honor Billy Brown, Jr., a linebacker who graduated from CSP in May. Billy passed away while working out in the Twin Cities in June. The two were close friends, and head coach Shannon Currier has opted to honor Brown by selecting a player who fits Billy’s work ethic and commitment to the program to wear the number each season.

Russell has racked up 91 career tackles. As a sophomore in 2016, Russell had his top season with 48 tackles including 5.0 for loss.

The other safety position will be a combination of redshirt fresh-men Rhett Sheehan and Parker Powers while another redshirt freshman, Dez Bassett will backup Russell.

Powers made his first career interception on a play deep down the sideline, Bassett had a tackle for loss and Sheehan had three tackles as the redshirt freshmen trio each made an impact.

Junior Brian Szutkowski piled up 88 tackles as a sophomore starter in 2017, adding six pass breakups and played a signifi-cant special teams role in the opener.

GARRETT BECOMING A FORCE UP FRONTSophomore Chris Garrett broke onto the scene in a big way as a true freshman in 2017, racking up six sacks (all solo) and forc-ing five fumbles. He added 44 total tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss in just seven games. He had at least six tackles in five of the seven games.

He earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors late in the year at Augustana where he forced three fumbles, had three sacks and tackles for loss and nine total tackles - all career-highs.

He was second on the team with six tackles including a half for loss and a quarterback hurry in the 2018 opener at #20 USF.

Opposite Garrett at the other starting defensive spot was junior Jackson Dobbs who tied for the team lead with seven tackles. After missing his sophomore season in 2016 with an injury, Dobbs returned midseason in 2017 in his redshirt sophomore campaign and made 33 tackles with 3.5 for loss in seven games.

Juniors Kelly Pierce and Dylan Wood started on the interior and it was Wood who came up with a big third down sack in the fourth quarter at #20 Sioux Falls, finishing with four tackles.

Wood played all 11 games each of the last two years and has now recorded 78 tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss with 9.5 sacks in his career. He broke out in 2017 as a sophomore with 51 tack-les, 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

Pierce, meanwhile, played the first five games of the 2017 sea-

son before missing the rest of the year with an injury after playing all 11 games of 2016 as a freshman. In 17 career games, he’s registered 63 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks.

Junior college transfers TJ Diallo (NT) and Cole Mar-mor (DE) add depth and experience up front. Marmor earned the week one start at USF while Diallo played numerous snaps as a key rotation tackle. Each player had one tackle.

Redshirt freshman defensive end Shawn Aarhus had a big debut, making three tackles with a sack, tackle for loss, forced fumble and fumble recovery.

EVANS COMING OFF BIG FRESHMAN YEARSophomore Blake Evans broke into the starting lineup midseason as a true freshman last year and led the team with 97 tackles. He had double-digit tackles in six of the last seven games and five in a row. He finished the year ranked seventh in the Northern Sun in tackles and made six stops in the 2018 season opener at Sioux Falls.

Sophomore Golden Valley, Minnesota native Andy Aune came back to the Twin Cities to play with the Golden Bears after spending his first two years in Ver-million at the University of South Dakota.

In Aune’s first contest with CSP, he registered five total tackles.

Redshirt freshman Jake Portz made his debut and started at MLB, tying for the team-high with seven tackles including his first career sack.

SHEPLEY DEBUTS AT...PUNTERIt was quite the debut for sophomore Jake Shepley at the punter position. He averaged 47.3 yards on six punts with three eclipsing the 50-yard mark including a long of 66 which was pinned at the four yard line. His current average ranks ninth in the country, second in the Northern Sun and was the fourth-best single game average in program history.

Shepley is also a wide receiver, seeing action in four games with two catches as a true freshman in 2017. He steps into a punter position vacated by All-NSIC First Teamer Sam Maedke who led the league with a school record 41.3 average last year.
