Having carried success with her throughout her career asboth a coach and a player, Lacinda Melanson takes on herfirst stint as a collegiate head coach in Pembroke after beingnamed UNCP's ninth head softball coach on Aug. 7, 2008.Melanson comes to Pembroke following a four-year stint(2005-08) as both a graduate assistant and assistant coachat Louisiana-Monroe where she helped lead the Warhawks tomore than 85 wins – including a 12-game improvement afterjust two years on the ULM staff."We found a dynamic coach in Lacinda Melanson - a formerDivision II all-American and an experienced Division I coach,"said UNCP athletic director Dan Kenney. "Lacinda is thedaughter of a college softball coach and understands thework ethic needed to be successful. Most importantly, shehas proven that she cares about the welfare of her student-athletes."Melanson, a Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, played four sea-sons (2001-04) at the University of Tampa where she was athree-time all-conference second baseman for the Spartans.During her four years in Tampa, she helped pace UT to a cu-mulative 123-69 (.641) record, one Sunshine State Confer-ence title and three NCAA postseason appearances. Shewas also a member of three of Tampa’s four 30-win squads, including pacing the Spartans to a then-school record 35 vic-tories in 2002.“UNCP is very fortunate to have someone with Lacinda’sknowledge of the game and tremendous values,” said Tampahead coach Leslie Kanter. “She has a lot to give to the ath-letes and to the UNCP program.”

Melanson enjoyed a phenomenal junior season that saw herrecord a team- and career-best .354 (46-for-130) batting av-erage to go along with 12 extra-base hits (1 HR) 23 RBI and18 runs scored. Her numbers would earn her second teamall-American and first team all-region honors, as well as thefirst of two consecutive first team all-SSC accolades.Named “Major of the Year” and “Outstanding EducationGraduate” (3.57 cumulative grade point average) at the con-clusion of her senior year, she also served a stint as captainof the UT softball squad and was a co-leader of a Bible studyfor athletes with Campus Crusade for Christ.Following her standout playing career, she made the transi-tion to the coaching world as a graduate assistant atLouisiana-Monroe and the effects of her tutelage were felt al-most immediately. The Warhawks, who recorded just 13 winsthe year prior to her arrival (2004), would flirt with the .500mark during her first season as a full-time assistant (2006)en route to 27 victories on the shoulders of record-breakingoffensive numbers. ULM would, again, churn out school-bestoffensive statistics the following season in its first year ofcompetition in the Sun Belt Conference. She has also gained coaching stints on the staffs of both theDavie (Fla.) Power softball organization and the Gold CoastHurricanes (Plantation, Fla.). She served as an assistantcoach with both organizations, including her stint with thepower under her father and current St. Thomas head coachJeff Norman.Melanson earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise sciencefrom Tampa in 2004 and her master’s degree in kinesiologyfrom ULM in 2005. UNC Pembroke is committed to absolute compliancewith all NCAA and Peach Belt Conference rules andregulations. Institutional control of athletics is a funda-mental principle of NCAA legislation. It requires eachinstitution to conduct its intercollegiate athletics pro-grams in accordance with the rules and regulations ofthe NCAA. This responsibility includes ensuring thatcoaches, staff, and other groups representing the in-stitution’s athletics interests comply with all applicablerules. As a result, it is important for prospects, fans, andalumni to have some understanding of the principlesgoverning college athletics. Below are a few definitionsand rules that apply to all athletic boosters.NCAA DEFINITIONSREPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICSINTERESTS (BOOSTER)A “representative of athletics interests” (booster) isany individual or group that has ever:• Been a member of an organization promotingUNC Pembroke athletics.• Contributed to the Athletics Department or itsbooster organizations.• Assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospectivestudent-athletes.• Provided benefits (e.g. employment) toprospective student-athletes, enrolled student-athletesor their family members.• Otherwise promoted the UNC Pembroke athleticsprogram.Keep in mind that it is very easy to meet one or moreof these criteria and once you become an athleticsrepresentative, you retain this status FOREVER!PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETEA “prospect” is a high school student that has startedclasses for the ninth grade and also any junior collegestudent. A student that has not started classes for theninth grade becomes a prospect if the student re-ceives any benefits that the institution does not pro-vide to all prospective students in general. Anindividual remains a prospect until he or she startsclasses at UNCP or reports for practice, whicheveroccurs first.STUDENT-ATHLETEA “student-athlete” is a student whose enrollmentwas solicited by an athletics staff member with the ex-pectation that the student would participate in inter-collegiate athletics.A student not solicited by anathletics staff member becomes a student-athletewhen he or she joins an intercollegiate team or re-ports for practice.RECRUITING“Recruiting” is any solicitation of a prospect or theprospect’s family by an authorized institutional staffmember for the purpose of securing the prospect’senrollment at UNCP and participation in athletics.Athletics representatives may not be involved in therecruitment of prospects except as outlined in the fol-lowing section.CONTACTA “contact” is any face-to-face encounter between aprospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardianand an institutional staff member or athletics repre-sentative during which any dialogue occurs.

GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS FOR BOOSTERS• A booster may not contact a prospect, prospect’sfamily, friends, coach or school administrator in anattempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect.• A booster may not expend funds to entertain orprovide transportation for a prospect or theprospect’s family or friends.• A booster may not write, make phone calls, or oth-erwise communicate with a prospect or the prospect’sfamily or friends for recruiting purposes.• A booster may not contribute funds to a prospect’shigh school or club team as a form of recruiting in-ducement or if solicited to do so by acollegiate coach.• A booster may attend a prospect’s athletic eventswithout contacting the prospect or his/her family.• A booster may send recommendation letters andnewspaper clippings about a prospect in their areato UNCP’s coaches.• A booster may continue a pre-existing relationshipwith a prospect and his/her family as long as the rela-tionship pre-dated the prospect’s recruitment or no-toriety as an athlete and the nature of the relationshipis not enhanced after his/her notoriety as an athlete.Such a relationship may not be for recruiting pur-poses.• A booster may host a current student-athlete oran entire team in their home for a meal, but onlyon an occasional basis.• A booster may provide a job for a student-athlete,but the job responsibilities must be legitimate and thepay commensurate for the task.GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA BENEFITSAn “extra benefit” is any special arrangement by an in-stitutional employee or athletics representative toprovide a prospect, a student-athlete or his or herfamily with a benefit not expressly authorized by theNCAA.
