2010-11 Arkansas State Women’s BowlingArkansas State University

Those who have not visited the campus of ArkansasState University in the last five or 10 years would beshocked at the school’s appearance today. So much oncampus is tied to athletics. ASU Stadium is the gatheringsite for Saturdays and excitement surrounding each gamecan be felt for miles. The sights, the smells, the sounds offootball.

There is so much construction and new projects on cam-pus. The school looks . . . and is . . . a modern educationalinstitution that has kept up with technology and studentneeds as much, if not more, than most schools in thenation. A student center addition anchors the campus, anda new student recreation and wellness center was complet-ed last fall.

New campus housing has recently been completed, including a “Collegiate Park” apartment complex, coastal-type soft-colored housing throughout campus, and a newdorm. There is a new Alumni Center and construction of anew overpass connecting the campus to local businessesis about to become a reality. It’s a new-look campus that isgrowing and improving each day.

Arkansas State University is an extremely valuable partof Northeast Arkansas and surrounding areas.

Arkansas State University was established April 1, 1909,as a “public school of agriculture” by Act 100 of theArkansas General Assembly. It was located at Jonesborobecause citizens of the city bid $40,000 to the state andpledged 200 acres of land as a site.

After a century of growth, ASU-Jonesboro now has anannual budget of some $122.6 million, owns more than3,000 acres of land in five different counties, has a physicalplant valued at almost $200 million, and has an alumni rollexceeding 53,000.

ASU’s rapid development over the years has been typi-cal of other major universities in an emerging modernSouth. From an agricultural high school in 1909, to a juniorcollege in 1918, to a four-year degree-granting institution in1930, to a university in 1967, ASU has become regionallyrespected and nationally recognized for its qualities ofteaching, research and service.

The ASU system includes campuses at Beebe (WhiteCounty), Mountain Home (Baxter County), and Newport(Jackson County) where associate degree programs areoffered, and at Marked Tree, Searcy and Heber Springs. Aninstructional site is located at Paragould.

The Jonesboro campus, which occupies 942 acres amidthe gentle slopes of Crowley’s Ridge in east Jonesboro, islocated between the vast and fertile Mississippi RiverValley and the cultural and scenic richness of the OzarkMountains.

More than 10,000 students annually work toward de-grees in 141 areas of specialization at the graduate andundergraduate levels. Fifteen undergraduate degrees areoffered through the Colleges of Agriculture, Business,Communications, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts,Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing and HealthProfessions, Sciences and Mathematics, and theUniversity College. The Honors College was instituted July1, 2004, evolving from the Honors Program.

2010-11 Arkansas State Women’s BowlingDr. Dean Lee, Director of Athletics

The Arkansas StateUniversity athletics pro-gram reached its 100thbirthday last year andDean Lee's name hasfigured prominently inthe celebration.

Lee is entering hisninth year as Director ofAthletics and continuesrestoring the old andbuilding new traditionfor Arkansas State.

Under Lee’s direc-tion, the ASU athleticdepartment enjoyedanother significant yearin 2009-10. Not onlydid ASU enjoy some ofthe most exciting

moments ever on the fields, courts, and tracks, but also in thearenas of academics, donor and alumni involvement, communi-ty service and achievement.

The 2008 AAFF’s Outstanding Athletic Director, Lee serveson the NCAA Men’s Basketball Issues Committee, the BCSAthletic Directors Advisory Committee and the Division 1AAthletic Directors Association Board of Trustees.

He has guided the athletic department to annual successacademically and competitively, but last year ASU athleticsonce again enjoyed growth through a number of unique accom-plishments and projects as well.

For instance, ASU took fourth place in the Bubas Cup stand-ings, the Sun Belt Conference all-sports award, for its bestresults in a decade.

The Red Wolves also continued to upgrade their facilities withfirst-class renovations to the men’s and women’s basketball andvolleyball locker rooms, their media/film room in theConvocation Center and installation of a new state-of-the-artGEO Surfaces turf inside ASU Stadium.

The ASU Athletic Department received the largest singledonation in its history, a $400,000 gift from Charles Luter thatwill be used to enhance the athletic academic facility, in 2008and continued to bring in significant donations last year underLee’s leadership. Among those were a $150,000 donation fromASU alumnus and former football letterman Steve Bryant. Theathletic department also announced a $250,000 donation lastyear from alumni and long-time supporters Scott and KayDawson. The $250,000 donation matched the second largestgift in the department’s history and is being used to improve theacademic environment for all student-athletes.

Among the many athletic accomplishments attained last year, the women’s bowling team made its third straight appearance inthe NCAA Championships.

As recently as 2008, ASU secured an unprecedented $1 mil-lion contract for its Sept. 4, 2010 football game at Auburn, theRed Wolves set a school-record in football attendance and twostudent-athletes were named Academic All-America as well.

Lee’s vision for ASU Athletics was revealed in a 2008 videocalled “Inside A-State Athletics”, which focused on the RedWolves athletic programs and how the athletic department plans

to meet challenges in the future. A-State released a second“Inside A-State Athletics” video featuring Lee in 2009 that gavean in-depth look at facilities and the progress that is being madein that area.

Additional recent facility upgrades include 206 field-levelseats and new party boxes available for corporate events addedto Tomlinson Stadium and the Convocation Center weight roomunderwent major renovations that included new weights andcardio equipment.

Lee was instrumental in the recruitment and hiring of JohnBrady, who was just two years removed from an NCAA FinalFour appearance and recently named the 2009-10 Sun BeltConference Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Those are just a few of the many ways the ASU athleticdepartment has continued to develop under Lee, who is alwayslooking for new and creative ways to take the Red Wolves ath-letic program to the next level while maintaining its main focuson academics, competitive performance and a well-roundedenvironment for student-athletes.

Lee remains hungrier than ever for ASU to have continuedsuccess in all areas. He has already made great strides inenabling Arkansas State's Department of Athletics to becomeone of the most respected programs around.

Dr. Lee became ASU's 10th Director of Athletics July 9, 2002.It wasn't long before the department began to experience impor-tant and progressive changes which were capped by anunprecedented “State of A-State” address in the spring of 2004.

When he concluded the address to a packed house, therewas no mistaking that he is committed to building a successfulprogram at ASU.

In a very short time, he has orchestrated sellout and capacitycrowds, overseen the expansion and growth of ASU's athleticfacilities, and provided sound leadership to both the athletic staffand population of student-athletes.

Lee came to ASU from Oklahoma State University, where hewas the Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations.

His administrative experience at two NCAA Division I-A uni-versities, OSU and the University of Arkansas, and his achieve-ments in mobilizing financial support make him well-suited forArkansas State University and Northeast Arkansas. While at theUniversity of Arkansas, Lee served as the Vice President of theRazorback Foundation.

In addition, Dr. Lee's experience as athletic director atArkansas Tech University and his familiarity with ASU and thestate of Arkansas help him feel right at home.

He earned his bachelor's degree in 1979 and master's in edu-cation at Henderson State University, then completed his doctorof education degree at the University of Arkansas in 1989. In2009, Lee was chosen as a Distinguished Alumni of HendersonState University, the highest honor Henderson State bestows.

Although born in Tulsa, Okla., Lee competed in high schoolsports in Berryville, Arkansas, and was selected to play in theall-Star basketball and football games in 1975.

He also played basketball, baseball and tennis at HendersonState, where he later served as an assistant coach. He playedin two national championship games as a member ofHenderson State’s basketball team. He was head basketballcoach at Malvern High School early in his career.
