The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team opened the 2010-11 exhibition season against CIS teams in fine form, claiming their 10th straight House-Laughton Hoops Classic and winning the Laval Rouge et Or Tournament. The team saw continued success in the regular season, hitting the century mark six times en route to a perfect 22-0 record and holding the top spot on the CIS leader board for all 14 weeks. The Ravens led the OUA on the offensive and defensive end, averaging 91.64 points per game and allowing only 60.99 points per game from their opponents. The team would be handed their first and only loss against a CIS opponent this season in the OUA final, falling 77-62 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The men would go on to finish with a record of 34-1 against CIS competition. They entered the CIS Final 8 tournament as the No. 2 seed and defeated the Concordia Stingers 73-66 in the quarter-final game, before knocking off the defending champion Saskatchewan Huskies 95-83 in the semis. Facing the Trinity Western Spartans in the gold medal game, the Ravens went on to claim their seventh national title in nine years with an 82-59 win over their Canada West opponent. Tyson Hinz was the standout player of the season, being honoured with the title of OUA East player of the year, earning a spot on the East first all-star team, capturing the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy as CIS player of the year and being named the CIS Final 8 tournament MVP. In his second season with the Ravens, the forward put up impressive numbers, ranking in the league top ten for overall points, points per game, free throws and field goals. Averaging 17.1 points per game, Hinz led his team with 375 points overall and led the OUA with a field goal percentage of 57.2. In 22 games this season, he recorded 131 rebounds, 58 assists and 17 steals. Joining Hinz on the OUA East first all-star team was teammate Cole Hobin. The Aston, Ont. native earned his second consecutive OUA East defensive player of the year title. Hobin was strong on the boards this year, grabbing a total of 85 rebounds, with 58 on the defensive end. The fourth-year guard led the Ravens in blocks and steals with 17 and 26 respectively. Making the Ravens’ starting five in his rookie season, Philip Scrubb was a dominating force on the court, leading to his OUA East rookie of the year title. He led his team in assists with 61 and was second in steals with 25. He was also part of the second all-star team and on the all-rookie team. Nationally, Scrubb became the first Carleton freshman to receive the Dr. Peter Mullins Trophy for rookie of the year since the award’s inception in 1988. Joining Scrubb as an OUA East second team all-star was Elliot Thompson. In his fourth year as a Raven, Thompson’s biggest threat was his perimeter shooting, going 41.9 per cent from beyond the arc. He banked 52 threes this season, ranking him fifth in the OUA. He finished the regular season with 242 points and was second in team rebounds with 110. Thompson was also named player of the game in the CIS championship final. After leading his team to their fourth undefeated season in eight years, head coach Dave Smart was named the OUA East coach of the year for the sixth time in his 12 years as head coach of the Ravens (2001-2003, 2005, 2009 and 2011). Smart also earned a record-tying fourth CIS coach of the year nod (2003, 2005 and 2009).

Since head coach Taffe Charles took over the program four years ago, the Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team has improved every season. This year was no exception, as the Ravens went on to make history with their best finish since the program’s inception. The women finished with a record of 18-4 for second place in the OUA East, banking 14 consecutive victories along the way. The team held a spot in the CIS Top 10 for all 14 weeks this season and was ranked as high as third, the highest ranking in the history of the Carleton women’s program. The Ravens went on to claim the OUA East title with a 50-47 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues and advance to the OUA final for the first time. After a heartbreaking 46-44 loss to the Windsor Lancers in the championship game, the women found themselves with a second chance to earn a spot at nationals, hosting a four-team Central Regional tournament. Carleton defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen in the semifinal only to fall to the AUS bronze medalist StFX X-Women in the final. Despite the loss, the Ravens received the at-large berth, sending them to nationals in Windsor, Ont. as the No. 3 seed. The Ravens were in unfamiliar territory, making their first trip to the national championship. They did however face a familiar face in the quarter-final round as they took on the No. 6 StFX X-Women in a rematch of the Central Regional final. The X-Women were again victorious, sending Carleton to the consolation semifinal against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Ravens suffered another loss in a close game, falling 56-52 to Laurier and seeing their most successful season come to an end. Following an outstanding year on the court, third-year guard Alyson Bush was named an OUA East second team all-star. Bush finished the season as the OUA leader in assists, with 92 in 21 games, an average of 4.38 per game. She was also second in steals with 71. It was her second consecutive year as an OUA East all-star, having been named to the 2009-2010 first team.

The Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team opened the year with a 2-1 win over Norway’s national women’s team at the Ice House. They went on to finish the exhibition season without a loss in regulation in seven games.

The team found continued success in its home opener, defeating the uOttawa Gee-Gees 8-1, marking the most goals in a single game that the Ravens had scored since turning varsity.

Further into the season, the women hit a bit of a drought. But the Ravens fought to stay alive and would go on a four-game win streak to improve their shot at a playoff position. Facing a must-win situation in their final regular season game, the Ravens defeated cross-town rivals, the uOttawa Gee-Gees, 2-1 to finish fourth in the RSEQ and advance to the first round of playoff action.

Facing the powerhouse McGill Martlets, the Ravens would be swept out of contention in the first two meetings.

Following their outstanding performances during the regular season, three Ravens were honoured with all-star nods and an award nomination. Claudia Bergeron and Kristen Marson were both named to the RSEQ second all-star team, while Erica Skinner was the RSEQ’s candidate for the Marion Hilliard Award. The award is presented annually to the CIS women’s hockey player who best combines academic and sport excellence with community involvement.

In her third season with the Ravens, Bergeron led her team in points with six goals and 11 assists in 20 games. She played a key role in lifting the Ravens to the first round of the playoffs, recording a goal and an assist in the final regular season game against the Gee-Gees.

In her fifth and final year with Carleton, Marson picked up four goals and five assists for nine points. The defender has played 91 games in a Ravens jersey, more than anyone else in the history of the women’s program.

Also in her final year with the Ravens, Skinner banked one goal and six assists, for seven points. Off the ice, she has been actively involved with the Kidfest Running and Reading program, encouraging and supporting reading development with youth.

Joining Marson and Skinner as Ravens’ hockey alumni are Melanie McKnight and Kaila Lassaline.

The men would advance to the OUA East semifinal after claiming a 2-1 series win against the Toronto Varsity Blues in quarter-final action.

Facing the UQTR Patriotes in round two, the Ravens saw their season come to an end as they were only able to bank one win in the best-of-three series.

After their impressive season on the ice, four Ravens were honoured as OUA East all-stars.

Goalie Matthew Dopud picked up two OUA nods, being named a first team all-star and to the East all-rookie team. Dopud had an impressive first season with the Ravens, leading the OUA with a goals against average of 2.11 and boasting a save percentage of 0.914.

The team started the season off with a split at the annual P.D. Ross Challenge, as the alumni crew came away victorious and the varsity team fell to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The Carleton Ravens men’s soccer team had a stellar start to its season, going on an eight-game undefeated streak. A major reason for their success was fifth-year goalkeeper, Karl Wasslen, who did not concede a goal in those eight games. Wasslen continued to impress between the posts, finishing the season with an outstanding 11 shutouts and 0.36 goals against average.

The men finished in second place in the OUA East with a record of 9-3-2 and advanced to the postseason. They saw their season come to an end in the quarter-final round after falling to the Ryerson University Rams 3-2.

After wrapping up the 2010-11 campaign, four Ravens were named to the OUA East first and second all-star teams. Defender and Ravens captain Nick Persichino, midfielder Joey Kewin and Wasslen were all named to the first team, while midfielder Sam McHugh was named to the second team. Wasslen and Persichino both played major roles in the Ravens holding the reputation as one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league, tying the Toronto Varsity Blues for fewest goals against in the OUA with five. This marks the second time in Persichino’s career and the third time in Wasslen’s that they have been named to the OUA East first all-star team.

Up front, Kewin and McHugh finished one and two in Ravens scoring, recording seven and four goals respectively. They produced more than half of the Ravens’ 16 goals this season and, for the second straight year, Kewin finished in the top 10 of the OUA scoring race. Both players received the all-star nod for the first time in their careers.

Playing their final year with the Ravens were Wasslen, Persichino, goalie Sam Hincks and defender Marc-Anthony Viscosi.

Despite dropping their last regular season game to the Ryerson University Rams, the team advanced to the OUA playoffs. Their season came to an end in the first round however, falling 2-1 to the Laurentian University Lady Vees at Ravens’ Field. Following a successful season on the pitch, three Ravens were honoured with spots on the OUA East first and second all-star teams. Fourth-year midfielder Amanda Ngwafusi and second-year goalkeeper Rachel Bedek were both named to the OUA East first all-star team, while fourth-year forward Shayla LaVecchia was given the nod as a member of the second all-star team. The Ravens kicked off the season with a second place finish at the Carleton Invitational, finishing with a record of 4-1.

The women proved to be on the right track to gold when they went undefeated at the Queen’s Invitational. After the three-day event, top scorer for the women went to Carleton rookie Meaghan Broddy, who had 10 goals total.

The women had an impressive showing at the Ontario Water Polo Festival in Toronto, coming away with four wins and one tie during the three-day event. Kailey Flower was the Ravens top scorer, grabbing eight goals total.

Leading up to the OUA finals, the women held a record of 12-1-1 in exhibition play.

The Carleton Ravens men’s water polo team had a strong showing this year, grabbing top results throughout the 2010-11 season.

The team lost a few all-stars last season, but still boasted a solid core of returning players, as well as experienced rookies. A new year also brought a new head coach, as the team welcomed Ravens alumnus, Zoltan Csepregi, who brought a wealth of experience to the men’s water polo program.

Leading up to the final event, the Ravens competed in a handful of exhibition tournaments, beginning with the Carleton Invitational. The weekend proved to be a success, as the men turned out an undefeated performance.

Participating in the Queen’s Invitational that same month, the men only lost one of four games, falling to the McMaster Marauders by just one point.

Going undefeated in round robin action at the OUA Championships, the men went on to the semifinal game, only to suffer a one-point loss to the Western Mustangs, sending them to the bronze medal game against the Marauders. Despite a close matchup, the Ravens would fall to McMaster, 11-10, to finish fourth overall.
