2010-11 SEASON PREVIEW

As we head into this season I am filled with optimism. The opti-mism comes from the fact that

we return eight players with college ex-perience. Rarely does this happen at the community college level. So the word that may define our season is experience. Experience could be what makes this season special. In regards to the 2010-2011 Chargers, experience could play out in many levels.

Will this experience show in prac-tice, in the team room, in the weight room, and in the classroom? Experience should lead to improved mature actions and decision making. If it does, the Chargers could a team to be reckoned with.

Last year, we had a great deal of talent and yet lacked experience. Many times we lacked the maturity to reach our full potential as a team. It was evi-dent in the fact that we lost seven games by two points or less.

This year’s team needs to be mature enough to set a standard of excellence and keep chasing it. This team needs to hold each other accountable to the Charger way, be loyal to each other, and stay together in tough times; easier said than done obviously.

Quite honestly last year was a season of un-met expectations. That team

knows what they could have done better to reach those expectations. The key is to make those changes this season.

There is a quote: “Some years provide the question, other years the an-swer.” My hope for the team this year is they find the answers. It will only come from self evaluation and self improve-ment. If the off-season is any indication they are looking for answers.

Top to bottom this team comes in as the most fit team I’ve ever had at Cypress. The players have put the time in and have come back better players. There is tremendous buy-in to make this a special season.

Leading us to the special season will be on our sophomores: Micaela Pickens, Rachel Sweezy, Debbie Chavez, Elisepa Ete’aki, Ashley Zaragoza, Sareen Oha-nian, Lindsay Lee, and Mia Chiaro. They all know what it takes to compete at this level and be successful in the always tough Orange Empire conference. How they lead our newcomers will be key.

Speaking of our newcomers; two of which are not totally new, Ericka Arroyo-Villeza was a redshirt for us last year and Diana Vera played for Golden West Col-lege three years ago before they dropped the women’s program. They both also add to our experience.

Our newcomers have fit right in.

They are a hard working and competitive bunch. They include: Teriyanna Bod-die, Jonell Bowers, Page Rhodes, Donna Ka’anoi, Brooke Ponting, and Jessica Romero.

This season’s schedule will test our maturity and experience. We open up in the Pasadena City Tournament and the following weekend we head to the Mer-ced tournament which includes many of the north’s toughest teams. Rounding out November will be a couple single games versus a strong Canyons team and cross town rival Long Beach City College.

December includes three tourna-ments: The Lady Charger Classic, the Antelope Valley Tournament, and the Grossmont Tournament as the final tune-ups for the OEC conference, in my opinion the toughest conference top to bottom in the state.

We have talked to the team about creating your ending. The ending is created by the daily work and sacrifice. We want to have a storybook ending. In order to do that, we must improve daily, weekly, and monthly, to be where we want at the end, especially given the fact that only two teams will be taken from each region for the State Tournament. If the Chargers use their experience, add to it throughout the course and the season, we could produce that special season.

“We have talked to the team about creating your ending. The end-

ing is created by the daily work and sacrifice. We want to have a storybook ending.”

HEAD COACH MARGARET MOHR

Margaret Mohr has the Lady Chargers running strong with over a decade of expe-

rience directing the Cypress College women’s basketball program. In 2004-05, Mohr led the underdog Chargers to her first State Championship. She also took the college to seven consec-utive post-season appearances. Mohr has led Cypress to two Orange Empire Conference Championships (2006, 2009), the program’s first OEC cham-pionships since 1988. She surpassed the 200 win milestone at Cypress in 2010 with a defeat of Saddleback on January 13th. Throughout both her playing and coaching career, Mohr has been no stranger to basketball success. Her high school playing career laid the foundation for the future, leading La Reina High of Thousand Oaks to the 1983 Southern Section Class 1A title and earning both CIF-SS and Nation-al Catholic Player of the Year honors. She was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame on June 19, 2004.

Mohr then played for legend-ary coach Joan Bonvincini at Long Beach State and helped lead the 49ers

to a 33-3 record and a berth in the Women’s Final Four in 1987. After graduation, Mohr began her coaching

career as an assistant at Long Beach State and Santa Clara before taking the head coaching job at Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach, guiding the Lady Bruins to a pair of Moore league titles and a CIF runner-up fin-ish. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Mohr was given the unique op-portunity to be an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. At the Sparks she had the opportunity to coach such names as Lisa Leslie and Chamique Holdsclaw. Her goals for the Lady Chargers’ program remain the same: to help her players achieve academic excellence, athletic excellence and personal ful-fillment. “I want the women in our program to leave Cypress College with all the tools to be successful in today’s competitive world and with two years of great memories and dreams come true” Mohr received her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Long Beach State in 1988, and her Masters of Arts in PE from CSULB in 1996.

COACHING STAFFMike Ford joined the Lady Chargers

staff for the 2004-05 season helping to lead Cypress to a program first State Cham-pionship. Ford came to Cypress after a success-ful coaching tenure at Los Alamitos High School where he was the Griffins’ coach for twelve seasons. His squads qualified for CIF playoffs 10 times. Ford also served as an assistant coach at Westminster and L.A.

Washington high schools. He was promoted from assistant to As-sociate Head Coach by Margaret Mohr for the 2010-11 season. Ford, who still teaches at Los Alamitos, is a graduate of Fresno State University with a degree in mathematics and a masters de-gree in Educational Technology from Azusa Pacific.

Gary Polk comes from a long history of basketball coaching most recently

as the head boys basketball coach at South Pasadena high school. Polk was also an as-sistant at Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was the recruiting coordinator for two years. As a varsity women’s coach, Polk spent two years each at Whitney and Long Beach

Jordan reaching the CIF quarterfinals with Whitney. As a player, Polk played basketball and track at Gardena high before moving on to Azusa Pacific on the JV squad. He earned his bachelors from Loyola Marymount in business administration and a masters from Dominguez Hills.

VIEWPOINT

Debbie Chavez and Ashley Zaragoza return as sophomore captains in the 2010-11 season looking for redemption and fulfilled potential after a first round playoff appearance last season. The two share their love for the sport and the team’s combined passion.

Every kid growing up has a favorite hobby or activity that they just cannot get

enough of. Some kids beg their par-ents to take them swinging and slid-ing, or they just cannot get off of the couch because they love cartoons so much. Some kids have some-thing special that they are blessed with, and for us, it’s the game of basket-ball. For many of us, falling in love with the game was easy and started at a young age. Basketball is our passion. It’s a sport of battles, both mental and physical. We get to be underestimated and challenged by others and it lights the fire under us. It’s passionate and intense. It’s a game where we get to share some of the best and worst moments of our lives together as a team. We can create bonds that last forever, and as long as we’re wearing the same jersey as

each other, we can trust that there will always be an army behind us. Most importantly, there is no perfection in the game of basketball. We can never reach a point where we can say that, “I’ve had enough practice.” You can practice shooting a hundred shots from the same spit, hit a few in the game, but miss a few from the spot one step behind it. That’s my favorite part: Knowing there is so much poten-

tial. It pushes us to work hard. We are told to chase great dai-ly. We have been working hard throughout the Spring and Sum-mer training, and find ourselves here today, as a team, with the same goals. It has been hard work coming into the season, all of us being pushed to our limits of con-ditioning and train-ing. We are a very tight knit group of girls that has a lot of fun together. The coming together of

this team has been easy. What’s exciting is when the chal-lenges of this season come, and we are brought closer by sticking together. All of us from different backgrounds, with different styles of play and attitudes, we managed to become a family striving for greatness.

A team building exercise in Big Bear.

The 2009-10 season was a tough one for the rebuilding Chargers returning just two sophomores. After losing all-State return-

er Quortlyn O’Neal to injury early in the season, Cypress battled to build a successful season despite dwindling numbers due to injury. Cypress began the season strong taking on some tough non-conference opponents on the way to a 4-1 start before a triple overtime loss to Fresno in the Merced tournament championship game. Cypress continued non-conference action in-cluding a second place finish in its own Lady Char-ger Classic. Four losses in a row marked a tough period in Cypress’s non-conference play. Conference action started with a stumble in-cluding a loss to Irvine Valley. Cypress won two straight to even its conference record and then lost in yet another overtime battle against Riverside. The first half of conference ended with a 3-3 conference record for the Chargers. Cypress struggled in the second half winning just two and ending conference in a three-way fourth place tie. The Chargers just barely earned a playoff bid as the last team to qualify. They earned a spot in the regional play-in game at Santa Monica play-ing for the right to move on to the first round of playoffs. Cypress upset the higher seeded Corsairs with a late run to win 74-69. Cypress had to travel to Ventura next to take on the top seeded Pirates in front of a hostile crowd. Ventura, who eventually moved on to win the State Championship, proved to be too much to handle in an 83-63 loss ending the Charger season. The 14-16 final record was a drop from the 23-10 record from the 2008-09 season. Freshman Mi-caela Pickens was named Second Team All-State.

HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHTSARA WORKS

Arguably the best player in the history of Cypress College wom-en’s basketball, Works is the school’s all-time leader in points scored (1,395) and second in rebounding (578) despite having her junior college career ended prematurely by a knee injury.

She also holds the school record for points in a single game - man or woman - when she tallied 45 against American River in De-cember of 1994.

During her career, the Lady Chargers went 45-22 and advanced to the State quarterfinals in 1993-94.

San Diego, Calif. – The playoffs began with 36 teams vying for the top spot in the state, after the dust had settled, Cypress came out on top. The Chargers came in undermanned and undersized, but ended their season with a victory over Pasadena 69-65 to win the State Championship.

The Chargers were underdogs through-out most of the playoffs technically only supposed to win their first game. Cypress relished the underdog spot and were un-fazed as they took out one opponent at a time through pure heart. Cypress faced off with the 29-1, 1st seed Pasadena College Sunday afternoon. The Chargers came out energized starting the game with a 10-2 run. With a 38-26 lead at halftime,

it looked like the Chargers were going to pull out a blowout upset. When the sec-ond half began, Pasadena came out with something to prove going on an 18-2 run to take the lead from Cypress. Just when most would concede that their dream season was over, Cypress charged back to take the lead for good and win by 4.

The sophomores came up big for the Championship. Despite struggling through the first two games of the tourna-ment with a broken toe, Rosalyn Omoruyi stepped up when it counted the most to be the leading scorer and rebounder of the game with 23 points and 14 rebounds. All State Tournament selection Mia Sea-graves contributed some big baskets with 17 points while the Tournament MVP se-lection Brittany Imaku contributed 8 as-

sists to go along with her 8 points. Long distance shooter Ruta Autele hit 2 three-pointers from the field and Paula Reed clogged up the middle on defense and grabbed 6 defensive rebounds. Reserve guard Niann Hill produced a key bucket in her limited minutes.

The freshmen were not to be outdone as they showed what to look out for next year. All-state forward Ana Fakatou put up 10 points and 8 rebounds while three-sport athlete Brianna James grabbed 5 rebounds.

Head coach Margaret Mohr and her Great Eight Chargers end their season with the team’s first State Championship and a record of 28-5.

CHARGER ATHLETICS

Cypress Community Col-lege boasts a well rounded physical education cur-

riculum along with a successful sports program featuring 13 in-tercollegiate teams and a strong support staff of professionals. The school also has a wheelchair bas-ketball program. Student-athletes are provided quality individual instruction, the chance to de-velop to their full potential and the oppor-tunity to earn a four-year col-lege or univer-sity scholar-ship. C y p r e s s , which offers seven sports for women and six for men, has had a solid line-up of teams and indi-vidual athletes who have excelled since the college first opened its doors in 1966. In recent years, the baseball, softball, women’s soccer and women’s basketball programs

have taken center stage. In 1997 the baseball and softball squads, coached by brothers Scott and Brad Pickler, captured state championships. The baseball crown was the third

of the 1990s under the direction of Scott Pickler who has over 700 wins in his 22 years at the school and captured the state championship again in 2003. Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres, who played at Cypress in 1986 and 1987, is a four-

time Major League all-star and holds the MajorLeague record for career saves. Brad Pickler, has also had a great deal of success. He has led the softball team to a record six state titles while winning over 1,000 games. The Chargers were the first Cali-fornia school to capture three consecutive state championships (1997, 1998, 1999).

Cypress only start-ed playing intercolle-giate women’s soccer in 1991, but the late Ray Haas quickly built the program into a consistent winner. The Chargers won State Championships in 1998, 1999 and 2004.

Cypress’ 27-0 season in 1999 was rewarded with a No. 1 national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cypress captured its first women’s basketball championship in 2005. Margaret Mohr’s team set a school record with 28 wins

against five defeats. Cypress enjoys strong support from the community and student body, who are part of the traditionally popular athletic pro-gram.
