Francis Marion University is affiliated with the NCAA and is a memberof the Division II Peach Belt Conference. The school sponsors sixsports for men and six for women. The men’s golf and women’ssoccer programs compete as NCAA Division I independents.

Men’s Sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, andtennis. Women’s Sports: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball,tennis, and volleyball.

Over the past decade, all 12 of the university’s sports have partciptatedin post-season NCAA competition, including the golf team winningthe 2003 Division II national championship, the men’s basketball teamreaching the 2004 Sweet Sixteen, the baseball team advancing to the2006 College World Series, and the softball team going to the 2008Division II World Series. The men’s tennis team has earned 14 invi-tations to the NCAA Division II tournament over the past 16 years.

Francis Marion is a two-time winner of the Commissioner’s Cup,which signifies the best all-around athletic program in the Peach BeltConference, one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division II conferences.FMU’s outstanding athletic program recruits athletes from South Caro-lina as well as the nation and world. Francis Marion regularly ranksamong the conference leaders for placing student-athletes on the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, which requires a3.0 grade point average for the academic year. Over the past decade, nearly all of the Patriot athletic squadshave appeared in national poll rankings.

on 52.5 percent of his field goal attempts,eighth-best in the Peach Belt Conference,and was second on the team in stealsand blocked shots. He scored in doublefigures 19 times, including two 20-pointgames, and recorded three double-doubles. Boyd has scored 683 pointsand grabbed 386 rebounds in 82 careercontests.

Also returning is 6-10 junior center An-drew Smith (6.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg), 6-8 seniorforward David Turner (6.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg),6-9 senior center Mindaugas Petreikis(2.2 ppg, 1.7 rpg), and 6-0 senior guardBryant Julious (5.3 ppg, 1.9 apg) – whomade eight starts last year.

Freshman 6-3 guard Evrik Gary (CamdenHigh School); junior 6-2 guard ShawnGreenfield (Garrett College), a formerNJCAA Pre-Season All-American; and 6-4 senior swingman Dominique Coleman(Univ. of West Alabama) head the new-comers.

Liki Turner is a 6-5 junior forward whotransferred from Shepherd College in2009, but sat out last season. In his lastseason of play, he averaged 14.3 pointsand 8.1 rebounds per game. Matt Todd,a 6-3 junior swing player from Aiken Tech-nical College also joins the Patriot ros-ter.

“Evrik and Dominique are the reasons Ifeel better about our perimeter shooting,”Edwards added. “Shawn will start at thepoint with Bryant also seeing action at

Francis Marion University will officially kickoff its 2010-11 men’s basketball seasonon Tuesday (Nov. 16) with its annual Riotat the Rim event as the Patriots entertainAllen University. The contest will tip-off at7 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Allen is off to a 5-0 start, with three of theYellowjacket wins coming by more than25 points. FMU leads the all-time series19-6, including a 93-53 win in Florencelast year.

Fifth-year FMU men’s head coach GaryEdwards welcomes back six lettermen(three starters) from last season’s 18-10squad – the second-highest win total in17 seasons. Four transfers and a red-shirtfreshman join the squad. Edwards hasdirected FMU to increased win totals eachof the past four seasons (9, 12, 16, 18).Overall, Edwards is beginning his 27thseason as a college head coach with 444career coaching wins.

“We are anxious to start the season,”Edwards said. “We have five seniors be-ginning their final campaign, and that pro-cess starts on Tuesday. We have atougher non-conference schedule thisyear and I hope that will prepare us for thePeach Belt (Conference) battles to come.“I think we have the potential to improveour shooting from the backcourt this year,and with some big bodies, reboundingneeds to be and could be another one ofour strengths. To be successful, we mustrebound well.

“We need to be a ‘less risk’ operation –meaning that we continue to force turn-overs, but on the offensive end we takebetter care of the ball. That turnover rationeeds to improve. With that being said,defense is always another key. We needto be able to hold teams down in the 60sin scoring.”

Senior 6-6 swingman Simel Boyd, a pre-season honorable mention Sporting NewsAll-American, heads the returnees. Boydwas a second-team All-PBC selection lastseason two years after being named the2008 PBC Freshman of the Year. Lastyear, Boyd led the FMU men in scoring(12.2 points per game), rebounding (6.6rebounds per game), and minutes played(28.0 minutes per game). He connected

that spot. Both continue to improve asthe pre-season winds down.

“We are looking for a break-out year fromSimel, who could be one of the mostimpactful players in the Peach Belt.

“Along with Simel, the group of Andrew,David, and Liki combined with Evrik andDominique from the perimeter give us asolid rebounding group.”

The Patriots will host the annual Zaxby’sTip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday(Nov. 19-20) with FMU playing in thenightcap at 8 p.m. both nights. FrancisMarion will play 15 home contests thisyear, and will participate in theOrthoCarolina Classic hosted by WingateUniversity on Nov. 26-27.

FMU opens Peach Belt Conference playon Dec. 1 at USC Aiken. The Patriotswere picked to finish eighth in the PBCcoaches’ annual pre-season poll. The2011 PBC Tournament will consists offirst-round games played at on-campussites on March 1with the semifinals andchampionship game to be played inAiken, S.C., on March 5-6.

FMU will be looking for a third consecu-tive winning campaign, something notaccomplished since the early 1990s.

Gary Edwards, a native of Vir-ginia Beach, Va., is entering hisfifth season at the helm of thePatriot men's basketball pro-gram, and his 27th year as acollege head coach. His careercoaching mark stands at 444-313 in 26 seasons, including a7-4 mark in NCAA Tournament

games and an 8-1 mark when playing for a conference orregional championship.

Edwards, 52, took over the reigns of the Francis MarionUniversity men's basketball program on April 26, 2006, andbecame the sixth head coach in the program's 40-yearhistory. His three-year mark on the Patriot bench is 55-57. He has improved the Patriots' win total in each of hisseasons in Florence.

This past season, he directed the Patriots to an 18-10record, the team's first back-to-back winning seasons in11 years. Francis Marion placed third in the Peach BeltConference's East Division standings.

During the 2008-09 campiagn, he guided FMU to a 16-12mark and a fifth-place finish during the Peach Belt regularseason. He also took the Patriots overseas to compete inthe prestigious Amsterdam Haarlem Basketball Week, heldeach year in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Francis Marioncompeted against teams from the Netherlands andKazakhstan, as well as the Israeli National Team.

In 2007-08, Francis Marion recorded a 12-16 mark (a three-win improvement over the previous year) and an eighth-place finish in the Peach Belt standings. During the year,Edwards captured his 400th career coaching victory (a69-66 win over Coker College on Nov. 17, 2007), and theFMU program recorded its 500th all-time win (a 77-67 vic-tory over UNC Pembroke on Jan. 16, 2008).

HEAD COACH -Gary Edwards

Edwards came to Francis Marion after 10 seasonsas head coach at NCAA Division II Indiana Universityof Pennsylvania. He guided the Indians to a 206-88mark, including five 20-win campaigns, three Penn-sylvania State Athletic Conference titles, and four tripsto the NCAA II national tournament. Under his guid-ance, IUP advanced to the Elite Eight twice (2000 &2002) and participated in the 2002 Final Four. He leftIUP as the winningest coach in the program's history.

Edwards returned to South Carolina, where he stillranks as the winningest coach at Division I Charles-ton Southern University. In nine seasons, he guidedthe Buccaneers to 121 wins (against 133 losses). His1995 CSU squad won the Big South Conference title,and he twice earned "Coach of the Year" honors.

He also previously coached at Atlantic Christian Col-lege (now Barton College), compiling a 62-35 mark inthree years and leading the Bulldogs to two NAIA tour-naments. Prior to his arrival, the Bulldogs had recordedonly one winning season in the previous 17 years.

Edwards received a B.A. degree in English (magnacum laude) from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1979,where he was recognized as an academic All-Ameri-can on the basketball court in 1979. He later earned amaster's degree from Old Dominion University.

His coaching career began in 1979 as an assistantvarsity coach and head junior varsity coach at his almamater, Virginia Wesleyan. He then served as an as-sistant coach at Hofstra University for two years be-fore taking over the Barton program.

While coaching at IUP, he served as a weekly colum-nist for the Indiana (Pa.) Gazette. He has been a coachat the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp (2004-05)and the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (1979-82),as well as a head coach in the Summer ProfessionalLeague of Puerto Rico (1993-95). He served as di-rector of the "Four Great Days of Summer" basket-ball camps (1987-96).

He is now in his fourth season (2007-11) of authoringa weekly sports column in the Florence (S.C.) Morn-ing News. Edwards is married (Corinne) and has twoadult children: Grady and Casey. He is the director ofthe Patriot summer basketball camps (team & indi-vidual), and has revived the "Four Great Days of Sum-mer" camp here in Florence.

Jarron Hinton begins his fifthseason as an assistantcoach for the FrancisMarion men's basketballprogram and his seventh aspart of the Patriot program.

His primary responsibilitiesinclude recruiting, on-floorcoaching, individual playerworkouts, pre- and post-season workouts and help-

ing in the area of academic support for team members.

He played for the Patriots during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. From the point guard spot, he averaged7.1 points and 5.3 assists per game with a school-record66 steals as a senior, while helping lead FMU to a 27-4record and an appearance in the round of Sweet Six-teen in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Hissenior season assists total of 164 was the third-highesttally in the program's history.

His two-year total of 309 assists stands fourth on theFMU career list, and he owned a career assists-to-turn-overs ratio of 1.5. As a junior, he ranked 23rd in NCAADivision II in assists per game.

He earned the B. S. degree in history from FMU. DuringDecember 2009, he was named to the FMU All-DecadeTeam for 2000-09.

Prior to coming to Francis Marion, the Lima, Ohio, na-tive played two seasons at Mercyhurst College.

“Jarron gives our program a link to the most successfulteam in Francis Marion history” said head coach GaryEdwards. “He played point guard for a 27-4 team thatwas arguably the second best team in Division II in 2004.He knows what it takes to win and he does a good job oftransferring that knowledge to our present players.”

Crayton JonesCrayton Jones, a native ofLas Vegas, Nev., beginshis season season on theFMU bench as an assis-tant coach, and his fourthyear at FMU.

His primary responsibili-ties include recruiting, on-floor coaching, individualplayer workouts, pre- andpost-season workoutsand helping in the area of academic support for teammembers.

Jones played for the Patriots during the 2007-08 and2008-09 seasons. In the backcourt, he started 47games over two seasons and averaged 5.2 points and3.5 assists per game with 86 steals.

As a senior, he ranked 71st nationally in assists pergame, and helped the Patriots to their second-best sea-son record in this decade. In the Peach Belt, he rankedsecond in assists per game, sixth in steals per game,and 17th in rebounding.

During his playing career, he was a member of the FMUStudent-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

He earned the B.B.A. degree in general bsuiness ad-ministration from FMU.

Prior to coming to Francis Marion, Jones played twoseasons at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz.He averaged 15.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.9 spg in 2006-07 while hitting 57.6 percent of his field goal attempts.He earned third-team All-Conference and honorablemention All-Region recognition, while being named histeam’s most valuable player.

Francis Marion University is a member of the 13-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference (formerly the PeachBelt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include Armstrong Atlantic State University (Savannah, Ga.), AugustaState University (Augusta, Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.),Flagler College (St. Augustine’s, Fla.), Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia SouthwesternState University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Ala.), UNCPembroke, North Georgia College & State University (Dahlonega, Ga.), and USC Aiken.

Headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 12 sports, six for men and six for women. Theyare men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s andwomen’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s golf.

Since its inception, the Peach Belt Conference has worked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences in NCAADivision II. Now entering its 21st season with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists, the PBC hasaccomplished that goal. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conferencehas expanded to 12 sports. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met inGreenville, S.C., to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools,plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in 1991. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adoptedin January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who wasthe first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Diana Kling enters her fifth year as assistant commissioner for internaloperations. Ken Gerlinger enters his 10th year as assistant commissionerfor communications., while Carl Segura is in his first year as directorof external operations, and Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, is the president of the Peach Belt for 2010-11.

The 2010-11 Peach Belt men’s basketball tournament will begin with first-round games on campus sites on March 1with the semifinals and finals to becontested March 5-6, 2011, in the 3,468-seat Convocation Centeron the campus of USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C.

FMU announces Men’s Basketball 2000s All-Decade Team

The Francis Marion University men’s basketball program has an-nounced its All-Decade Team for the first 10 years of this century(2000s), a squad that includes two of the program’s Top 10 scor-ers. The team was recognized during Homecoming activities onFeb. 20, 2010.

The team was selected by a committee at the university. Theeight-member team joins the previously announced squads fromthe 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. A player needed to have played atleast two seasons during the decade to qualify.

The squad includes 6-3 guard Mike Buglione (2002-04), 6-5 centerJaQuan Bracey (2002-04), 6-6 forward Raymond Dorsey (2004-07), 5-11 guard Jarron Hinton (2002-04), 6-1 guard Michael Jenkins(2002-06), 6-6 forward Louis McCullough (2001-05), 6-5 guard-forward Will Tucker (1997-2001), and 6-6 forward Randy Will-iams (2002-04).

Six of the players were members of Francis Marion’s 27-4 squadthat advanced to the 2004 Sweet Six 16 where the Patriots wereeliminated by the eventual national champion.

ELITE EIGHT CLUBThere are eight regions in NCAA Division II basketball. The champions of each region, known as the Elite Eightbecause they signify excellence in college basketball, advance to one site to compete for the national champion-ship.

The Patriot men’s program has begun the necessary steps to one day arrive at “Elite Eight” status. The purposeof the Elite Eight Club is to provide individuals and businesses the opportunity to support our men’s basketballprogram in extraordinary ways. These elite supporters receive special benefits, including a recognition plaque inthe men’s basketball locker room, recognition in the men’s basketball game program, Swamp Fox Club mem-bership at the VP’s Club level, an opportunity to meet scholarship recipients at an on-campus reception, andspecial Elite Eight apparel.

The FMU men's basketball program has been involved with several community and social projects over the pastfew years. Team members have taken part in programs at the McLeod Children’s Hosptial; helped at the MannaHouse, Pecan Festival, the Heart Walk, participated in programs at area public schools, and have conductedclinics at the McLeod Health and Fitness Center and for the Florence Recreation Department and the FlorenceYMCA.

FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, prides itself on providing astrong liberal arts education.

Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who wasnicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for using the South Carolina terrain to out-fox the British, the University enrolls nearly 4,000 students. The Univer-sity offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select numberof graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businessesand industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only stateuniversity serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college.

The campus features modern classroom buildings, laboratories and residencefacilities to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for students. Thecampus also features a number of recreational facilities that are available for useby students, faculty, staff and alumni, and for use in intramural and intercollegiateathletic competition.

Most buildings have been constructedor renovated since 1970. Facilities areequipped with ramps, and those ofmore than one story are equipped withelevators. Though each building hasits own unique design, all are plannedfor architectural harmony.

Named in honor of the university’s first president, Dr.Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center pro-vides comprehensive facilities for student servicesand activities as well as for recreation and athleticprograms to serve students, faculty, and staff.Opened in 1974, the center’s gymnasium orginallyseated 3,027 for basketball, but with recentrenovations that include new theatre-style seats, anew hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a new lightingand sound system, and a new paint job it now seats2,547.

The Patriot Women have compiled a 395-108 (.785) mark in the Smith University Center, including a 157-40 run in the past197 games. The FMU men’s basketball team owns a 283-180 (.611) recordin the building.

In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musicalconcerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S.Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commence-ment exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II NationalWomen’s Basketball Tournament, and in 1988, the U.S. Olympic Women’sBasketball Team played an exhibition game against the Cuban NationalTeam. In 1998, 1999, and 2008, FMU hosted the NCAA Division II women’sbasketball South Atlantic Regional Tournament.

• Bob Hogsett, a 6’8” 250-pound former NBA player was FrancisMarion’s first head coach

• Freshman forward David Riggins scored the Patriots’ first pointsfrom the foul line with 16:37 left in the first half of the school’sopening game, Nov. 20, 1970, against the College of Charleston inCharleston’s Tip-Off Tournament. Riggins is currently the athleticdirector at Mars Hill College.

• Francis Marion’s first victory was a 76-68 decision over theUniversity of North Carolina at Wilmington freshmen squad, Dec. 7,1970, in the Southside High School gym.

• Because Francis Marion lacked an on-campus gymnasium, thePatriots played their home games for the first four years in localhigh school gyms.

• Patriot forward Allen Floyd ranked second in the state among allcollegiate players in scoring for both the 1971-72 (21.9 ppg) and1972-73 (22.4 ppg) seasons. He finished his career as theschool’s career scoring (1,599) and rebounding (933) leader.

• The on-campus 3,027-seat Smith University Center opened in1974 and the Patriots won their first official “home” game, a 93-56victory over Coker College, Nov. 22, 1974.

• During the 1975-76 season, sophomore guard Bobby Shawproduced six consecutive 30-point games.

• On April 5, 1976, Lewis Hill took over the Patriot coaching reignsfrom Tim Watson.

• Jay McDermott, a 6’8” center, was the first Patriot to dunk thebasketball after the shot was reintroduced to the college game in1976.

• The 1977-78 campaign was a “season to remember” for Patriotfans with the team making its first-ever post-season appearance inthe NAIA District Six playoffs and recording its first-ever winningrecord (20-8) and first-ever 20-win season.

• On Nov. 25, 1977, sophomore guard Tracy Oxendine scored thepoints that put Francis Marion into triples figures for the first timeever (a span of 169 games) in a 117-73 win over Averett College.

• On a snowy Jan. 14, 1978, Francis Marion recorded its first winover a perennial in-state “small college power,” a wild 105-102overtime victory over Newberry College. After regulation ended80-80, the Patriots outscored the Indians 25-22 in OT.

• To open the 1979-80 season, Francis Marion won 13 of its first 14games, including a 90-79 road victory over NCAA Division ITennessee Tech University on Dec. 11, enroute to a program-best24-7 record.

• Senior forward Robert Moore earned second-team All-Americarecognition and was named the NAIA District Six “Player of theYear” following the 1979-80 campaign. Moore is now the teamdoctor.

• Guard Cleveland Lawson became the first Patriot to score a three-point field goal, during an 88-76 loss to Georgia Tech on Jan. 26,1983, in Atlanta, Ga.

• Between 1983 and 1988, the Patriots won at least 19 games eachof the five seasons.

• During the 1983-84 season, Francis Marion finished ninth in theNAIA in team scoring defense (57.5 ppg) and defeated two NCAADivision I opponents: The Citadel and East Carolina University.

• The Patriots opened the 1985-86 campaign by winning their firsteight games and 11 of their first 12, and were ranked as high assixth in the nation (NAIA) in January of that year. Among theteam’s 22 wins (8 losses) was another victory over The Citadel (ateam that listed on its roster a guard named Ed Conroy, who wouldlater become the head coach at Francis Marion).

• On Jan. 13, 1987, Francis Marion defeated Shaw University 122-108 in the highest scoring game in the program’s history.

• In their next-to-last season as an NAIA member (1990-91), FrancisMarion posted a 22-10 record and won it first-ever NAIA District Sixchampionship, thus earning the right to advance to Kemper Arena inKansas City, Mo., for the famed NAIA National Tournament.

• In 1992, Francis Marion moved from college to university statusand from NAIA to full-fledged NCAA Division II affiliation.

• Included among the team’s 19 wins in 1992-93, was a 52-50 victoryat USC-Spartanburg that ended the Rifles’ 50-game home-courtwinning streak, longest in the nation (any division) at that time.

• Guard-forward Carlton Farr was named the Peach Belt AthleticConference “Player of the Year” following the 1994-95 season,during which he set the current Patriot career scoring record of1,863 points.

• FMU head coach Lewis Hill announced his decision to step downfollowing the 1996-97 season, bringing to a close a successful 22-year stint at FMU that saw him post a 339-276 record.

• On April 3, 1997, FMU names Ed Conroy, cousin of author PatConroy, as its new head coach, the fourth in program history.

• Conroy directs the Patriots to a 66-58 upset of his alma mater TheCitadel in his first game on the FMU bench. He goes on to leadFrancis Marion to a 16-11 record and the biggest turnaround (13-win improvement) in NCAA Divisions I and II men's basketballduring the 1997-98 campaign.

• Junior guard Yaron Lahat records the second triple-double in teamhistory (13 pts,10 reb,10 ast) as the Patriots defeat 21st-rankedGeorgia College & State University 69-55 on Feb. 13, 1999 (alsoFMU's 400th all-time win). Seven months later, he would return tohis native Isreal to fulfill a military commitment.

• On July 14, 2000, John Schweitz was named the fifth head coach inthe program's history, succeeding Ed Conroy, who resigned to takean assistant's position at Division I University of Tulsa.

• Brothers Will and Wade Tucker conclude their playing careers asthe most prolific scoring brothers' tadem in team history with 1,959points: Will with 1,464 and Wade with 495.

• FMU loses its 2002-03 season opener at NCAA Division I CampbellUniversity 65-64 on a 37-foot shot at the buzzer. However, the 13-14 team’s nine-win improvement over the 2001-02 season was topsin the Peach Belt Conference. The Patriots ranked 8th nationally infield goal percentage defense and 30th in scoring defense.

• Only two years removed from a 4-23 campaign, FMU has its bestseason ever with a 27-4 record, a No. 5 national ranking in the finalregular season poll, a first-ever NCAA II national tournamentinvitation, and an appearance in the round of Sweet 16 where theteam lost to the eventual national champs. The team ranked 7th infield goal percentage defense (39.1%) and 39th in scoring defense.The team opened the season with a school-record 10-gamewinning streak, and went on to record the program’s first perfecthome mark (13-0).

• During the summer of 2004, FMU swingman Louis McCullough,half-brother of NBA star Kevin Garnett, declares himself eligible forthe NBA draft. He withdraws his name prior to the draft and returnsto school, where he is named a first-team preseason All-Americanby Street & Smith’s College Basketball. McCullough finished hiscareer second on the Patriot all-time scoring list (1,714), reboundinglist (811), and blocked shots list (152).

On April 26, 2006, Gary Edwards is named the sixth head coach inthe program’s history.

On Nov. 17, 2007, Edwards earns his 400th career coaching winwith a 69-66 victory over Coker. Later in the year, on Jan. 16,2008, FMU wins the 500th game in program history with a 77-67victory at UNC Pembroke.

FMU competes in the prestigious Amsterdam Haarlem BasketballWeek (Dec. 2008) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Former PatriotVony Rivers joins the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters squad.
