University of Maine President Paul Ferguson has officially released a strategic plan that creates a blueprint for the state’s flagship public university to become one of the most distinctive universities in the country for student achievement and com-munity engagement.

The plan, “The Blue Sky Project: Reaffirming Public Higher Education at Maine’s Flagship University,” was accepted by the University of Maine System trustees at their board meeting in Bangor July 9.

“This plan isn’t just about making the University of Maine a bigger, better and more financially sustainable institution,” says Ferguson. “It also is about reconnect-ing the university to the people of Maine so that we can have a major impact on the future growth and prosperity of our state in the 21st century.”

The plan is centered around investing in UMaine’s existing areas of distinction and launching a number of new initiatives to better align the university’s resources and programs with the needs of the state. It outlines five strategic pathways, sum-marized as the “Five M’s,” and a series of related initiatives and strategies to trans-form UMaine in the next five years:

Maine’s Renewal – Ensure that UMaine teaching, research, outreach, work-force and economic development program excellence are in close alignment with Maine’s priority needs. Initiatives include increasing campus/private sector partner-ships by 50 percent in the next five years, and aligning technology and educational programs with Maine’s economic infrastructure needs.

Money and Management – Optimize operating efficiencies and control ex-penditures within a financially sustainable business model, and seek new and en-trepreneurial revenue sources. Initiatives include a new enrollment management unit and a plan to potentially increase enrollment to 15,000 (from 11,168 in 2012), increasing the number of out-of-state and international students, and increasing academic partnerships with Maine’s community colleges.

Morale and Marketing – Invest in faculty and staff professional development, refresh the UMaine brand and improve communication among all constituencies. Initiatives include establishing consistent and high-quality brand standards to better promote UMaine, harnessing the goodwill of alumni for student internships and career networking, and promoting UMaine’s role in athletics as the state’s only NCAA Division I school.

Mentoring and Modeling – Promote undergraduate and graduate oppor-tunities for student success, including value-added residential life, research fel-lowships, internships, and more effective advising and learning environments. Initiatives include developing new models for learning to better prepare graduates for meaningful jobs and lives, establishing an outcomes-based assessment of all academic programs, and increasing the number of externally funded opportunities for hands-on student research.

Master Plan and Maintenance – Restore and create UMaine’s physical plant and technology infrastructure to ensure a vibrant place of learning and discovery. Initiatives include a Total Cost of Ownership (TOC) approach to managing UMaine’s $1 billion in infrastructure and real estate, fully funding appropriate levels of cam-pus upkeep and beautification, and continuing to implement campus sustainability initiatives.

Ferguson, who came to UMaine in July 2011 and was formally inaugurated as the 19th president this past April, began the “Blue Sky” project shortly after arriving on campus. From November 2011 to April of this year, a 26-member leadership team, made up of faculty, staff, students and alumni, met weekly to develop the plan. More than 30 informational meetings attracted hundreds of participants and more than 250 contributors submitted “blue sky ideas.”

“This has been a comprehensive, inclusive process that has united the entire University community around a renewed sense of pride, purpose and commitment to serving the people of Maine,” Ferguson says. “There is much work to be done, but we see blues skies ahead for this great University and the State of Maine.”

What GraduatesAre Saying

Kelly Newton (field hockey): “Being a student-athlete at the University of Maine has changed my life forever. The friends I have made and the memories I will take away with me are irreplace-able. Throughout the last four years, I have come to learn the true meaning of dedication, and that hard work real-ly does pay off. I am proud to say that the University of Maine has made me a better person.”

Brian Landry (men’s swimming): “Being a student-athlete here at UMaine the past four years has giv-en me opportunities and taught me life lessons I could not have gotten anywhere else. Competing at UMaine added another dimension to my col-lege career, prompting me to be more focused and dedicated to everything I did. I will cherish the times spent at practice and competitions. As said last year by teammate Jeremy Bender, “when you are gone you’re always a Black Bear.”

Jillian O’Brien (women’s track): “During the last four years as a Black Bear, I have learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible to prepare me to be a strong, successful professional in the future. The Univer-sity of Maine gave me an opportunity to get a great college education and a place to take my athletic ability to the next level. Once a Black Bear, always a Black Bear.”

Andrew Rogers (men’s basketball): “I could not be prouder to declare that I am a Black Bear student-athlete. These last four years of embracing the role of two full-time jobs, being both a student and an athlete, have helped shape me as a young man. Hard work, perseverance, dedication and facing challenges head on are all daily re-quirements as a student-athlete. As Black Bears, it’s great to know that we will take these same characteristics into the game of life. Go Blue!”

Ashley Kelley (softball): “As a mem-ber of the athletics family, I have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people while traveling around the country representing my school. Bal-ancing classes, workouts, travel and competing at the highest level have given me the skills and confidence to be successful after graduation. The Athletics Department gives you the guidance necessary to excel on and off the field. You come in from high school as an individual but leave as a part of something really special.”

Home of the Black Bears, the Harold Alfond Sports Arena is one of the finest all-purpose facilities in the Northeast.

The Harold Alfond Sports Arena, one of the finest all-purpose facilities in the Northeast, was completed in February of 1977. The generosity of Mr. Harold Alfond allowed for basketball to return to campus in a modern, upgraded facility on January 17,1992, when UMaine met Drexel University. Mr. Alfond, who has donated over $7 million to the University since 1968, contributed $2 mil-lion for the expansion in 1991. Mr. Alfond’s gift at that time was the largest one-time (non-post-humous) cash contribution ever bestowed upon the University. Over 2,000 people, headed by Mr. Alfond, contributed funds for the original construction of the complex. The expansion created 70-foot by 140-foot additions to the east and west sides of the Arena allowing for the installation of 1,200 seats. The construction raises the capacity to over 5,200 for hockey and nearly 6,000 for basketball. Included in the Arena expansion were additional concession areas and rest rooms, lockerrooms, ticket offices and souvenir stands. A storage area was also built for the new bas-ketball court used in the facility. Alfond Arena is the home of Maine’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with serving as the home for Maine nationally ranked men’s ice hockey team. The Black Bear women’s ice hockey team also calls Alfond Arena home. Alfond Arena is also used by high school and

In the fall of 2006, Notre Dame’s “Rudy” spoke to UMaine student-body at Alfond Arena. The complex is a modern facility with virtually no obstructed-view seats, and an excellent view of the court. Bleachers have been purchased to be used on the floor level allowing fans an even closer view of the game. In the summer of 2006, six additional luxury boxes were added to Alfond Arena, along with the changes to ADA -accessable seating resulted in the capacity of 5,633. A new concession area was constructed in 2006, along with a new Bear Necessities store. In 2007, nearly 18,000 fans saw the Black Bears compete at the Alfond Arena. The Alfond Arena now has a state-of-the-art video scoreboard that will allow fans to watch a live video of the game as well as instant replays.

Ted WoodwardHead Coach • Buck nel l ’86N inth S eason at Maine

Now in his ninth season at the helm of the Black Bears, head coach Ted Woodward’s team looks poised to rise back to the top half of America East after leading a young squad through a tough schedule last season and gaining valuable experience that should pay off in years to come.

Last season, Maine had a team that defeated Atlantic-10 foe Rhode Island (the third Atlantic-10 win in the last three seasons) and played tough with defending National Champion Connecticut and Big East power Notre Dame. Freshman Justin Edwards was named the CollegeHoops.net America East Rookie of the Year while being named to the All-Rookie Team, Alasdair Fraser was named Third Team All-America East, Gerald McLemore was named Second Team All-America East and Andrew Rogers was named to the America East All-Academic Team for the third time.

The 2010-11 Black Bears notched wins over Atlantic-10 foe UMass, and Big Ten Tournament runner-up Penn State, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Maine also had its first win at Vermont in six years en route to a top-25 ranking in the Mid-Major Poll. The Black Bears finished in third place in America East, marking just the second time in 20 years the program had back-to-back top-3 finishes in the conference. The Black Bears also led the league in scoring and total offense.

Maine had three players garner All-America East awards, with Troy Barnies being named to the First Team, Gerald McLemore to the Second Team and Andrew Rogers to the All-Academic Team. In addition, McLemore and Barnies were named to the NABC All-District I Team.

Under Woodward’s leadership, the 2009-10 Black Bears had one of the best seasons in program history as Woodward would earn America East Coach of the Year honors from CollegeInsider.com.

Maine finished the 2009-10 season with 19 wins, the fourth-most in program history. Included in those wins were victories over the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Boston College Eagles and the Fordham Rams from the Atlantic-10. The win over BC was the first in 85 years and the only win for an America East team over an ACC team that season. Maine would finish third in America East, the best finish since the 1999-2000 campaign.

In addition to the Coach of the Year Award, Woodward was named a national finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, given annually to honor recipients who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity off of it as well.

The Black Bears also received votes in the Mid-Major Top-25 Poll for three consecutive weeks, and had five players (Gerald McLemore, Sean McNally, Junior Bernal, Murphy Burnatowski and Andrew Rogers) earn America East postseason awards. In addition, five players (Bernal, Burnatowski, Simon Elias, Terrance Mitchell and Rogers) were named Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winners.

From 2004-09, Maine finished twice in the top half of the league, including a win over Rhode Island (his first win as head coach) and the 100 Club Tournament Championship, the first in-season tournament championship in several years.

Woodward has developed a number of Black Bears who have achieved honors both on and off the basketball court. He has had 10 players earn America East All-Conference honors including McLemore (four times), Burnatowski, Bernal, Justin Edwards, Alasdair Fraser, McNally, Kevin Reed (twice), Joe Campbell, Ernest Turner, Olli Ahvenniemi, Philippe Tchekane Bofia, Mark Socoby. Off the court, Woodward has led the Black Bears to achieve tremendous academic success, with many players receiving America East academic honors (Bernal (twice), David Dubois, Olli Ahvenniemi and Andrew Rogers (three times)), and Maine Scholar-Athlete Honors (Bernal, Burnatowski,Elias, Mitchell,Rogers, Jordan Cook, Olli Ahvenniemi, David Dubois, Jesse Keith, Chris Markwood, Jason Hight, Tyson Hartnett, and Philippe Tchekane Bofia). In 2005-06, Maine had six players honored as part of the UMaine Scholar-Athlete program, and four others were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll. In 2006-07, the men’s basketball team recorded the highest team grade point average in any year since records began being kept in 1988. In addition, the Black Bear basketball program has taken pride in community service with the team taking part in many community service events throughout the year.

Woodward was named the 20th men’s basketball head coach in school history on Tuesday, August 31, 2004. Woodward, with 19 years of Division I coaching experience upon his hiring, spent eight seasons as the top assistant coach with the Black Bears prior to being named head coach. He served as associate head coach during the 2003-04 season.

Woodward has been part of a Maine coaching staff that has led the Black Bears to appearances in two America East Championships and the lone pair of 20-win seasons in Maine history.

“We are pleased to name Ted as our next men’s basketball head coach,” said former Director of Athletics

Patrick Nero upon his hiring. “He shares the priorities that we have for our athletic program. He understands the high value we put on education, citizenship and the desire for our student-athletes to excel athletically. Ted joins and strengthens what we feel is already a very strong group of head coaches in our program.”

Woodward, 48, spent eight seasons as John Giannini’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator. He is respected as an accomplished recruiter and has played a key role in bringing top level talent to Maine. In addition, he has valuable expertise in the technical and administrative aspects of the program. He has an excellent record as a teacher of basketball, as he has worked with five players in his career who have reached the NBA. He

Before coming to Maine in 1996, Woodward was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for Mark Adams at Central Connecticut State for five seasons. During his tenure, CCSU set a Division I era school record for wins. Prior to his stint at Central, Woodward was a full-time assistant and recruiter at Harvard University during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons, where he also served as Director of Athletic Promotions.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Connecticut under Jim Calhoun from 1986-89. While he was at UConn, the Huskies achieved one of the greatest rebuilding projects in college basketball, culminating with three straight postseason appearances in four years, including the 1988 NIT Championship. Woodward had been recognized by his peers in rivals100hoops.com and TheInsider-sHoops.com surveys as one of the top assistants in the country. He also served as a specially invited guest of the Portuguese Basketball Coaches Association at their annual clinic in Lisbon.

In addition to his work with the basketball team at Maine, he was also head coach of the men’s golf team from 1997 to 2001.

A native of Suffern, N.Y., Woodward received his bachelor of arts degree in economics from Bucknell in 1986 and his master’s in education with an emphasis in sports administration from UConn in 1989. He is married to the former Linda Emery and they have two children, Jillian, 18, and Tommy, 15.

AMHERST, Mass.-The University of Maine men’s baketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts by the score of 68-56 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. With the win, Maine is now 3-5 on the year while UMass suffers just its second loss and now stands at 7-2. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) got Maine going when he intercepted a pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup and the foul. The Minutemen would take an 11-5 lead with five minutes left, but a Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) put-back would make it 12-7 with 11:56 left in the first half.

The teams exchanged baskets, and a nifty Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) steal and fastbreak layup got the Black Bears within 20-14 with eight minutes to play in the first stanza. Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) hit a jumper and an Andrew Rogers steal and layup got Maine within 20-18 with seven minutes to play.

The Black Bears continued to battle, which included a nice Fraser dunk on a Minuteman defender. A Barnies follow made it 30-29 UMass with just under four minutes to play. Two Peay free throws with two minutes left gave Maine a one-point edge. The teams exchanged baskets but would go into halftime tied at 32.

Fraser led Maine with nine points in the first half while McLemore added six points and three rebounds.

The Minutemen opened up a 36-33 lead, but Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) had a nice follow above the rim to make it a one-point game five minutes into the second stanza. Maine got within 38-37 on a nice Peay pass to McNally for an easy layup.

UMass got a bucket, but Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) swished a three to tie the game at 40 with 11:20 left. Mitchell would drain another three to put Maine up 45-42 with 10 minutes to play. The Black Bears took a 50-44 lead on a Peay free throw with 8:42 left, and a McNally follow put Maine up 52-44.

Maine got a stop, and McLemore made a three from the corner to put the Black Bears up 11 with six minutes to play.

The teams exchanged three pointers, and Maine held a 60-47 lead with 4:07 left.

UMass made a pair of free throws, but Barnies answered with a layup. The Black Bears got a stop, and would make free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.

Allison finished with seven points, six rebounds and three blocks while McLemore added 12 and Mitchell 10.

Douglas Leichner is in his eighth season on the staff of the Black Bears.

Leichner returned to the Black Bears for the 2009-10 season after coaching the UCC Demons of the Irish Professional SuperLeague during the 2008-09 season.

Last season, Leichner, whose primary responsibility is working with the post players, defensive schemes and recruiting, developed Mike Allison into an America East All-Defensive Team honoree and saw Alasdair Fraser garner Third Team All-America East accolades.

Leichner has now coached three All-Defensive players in the last five seasons.

Leichner also signed Justin Edwards, who was the eighth-ranked prospect in Canada, and developed into an America East All-Rookie honoree as well as the CollegeHoops.net America East Rookie of the Year.

In 2010-11, Leichner helped spark Troy Barnies to earn First Team All-America East and All-District Honors. Barnies would go on to earn tryouts with the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, and would sign a

professional contract to play in Turkey.

Leichner’s expertise with post players immediately impacted the Black Bears as Sean McNally earned Third Team All-America East recognition in 2009-10 while Murphy Burnatowski was named to the All-Rookie Team. Maine notched the third-most wins in school history with 19, finished third in the conference and notched its first win over Boston College in 85 years.

In addition, Maine ranked among the nation’s statistical leaders in field goal percentage defense (19th), scoring defense (39th) and few- est personal fouls per game (16th). A defensive strategist, Leichner has helped produced two America East All-Defensive Team selections in his past three seasons at Maine.

A tireless recruiter, Leichner successfully signed Fraser, the 32nd ranked prospect in Europe, for the 2010-11 season as well as Noam Laish who was the 47th ranked prospect prior to last season, and Justin Edwards, who was the eighth-ranked prospect in Canada, and developed into an America East All-Rookie honoree as well as the CollegeHoops.net America East Rookie of the Year last season. For 2012-13, Leichner recruited a strong class that included Till Gloger, the Most Valuable Player of the Under-19 German League among others.

Leichner’s extensive duties with the Black Bears include recruitment coordinator, game scheduling, scouting of opponents, equipment ordering and purchasing, fundraising activities, practice organization, on-floor coaching as well as academic monitoring, advising and mentoring.

The 2008-2009 season proved to be an unprecedented campaign as head coach of the professional club UCC Demons in Cork, Ireland. The Demons finished 22-1-1 and captured the elusive “Treble” for the first time in Irish basketball history. They were the SuperLeague Southern Conference Champions, the 2009 Irish National Cup Champions as well as the SuperLeague Champions. As a result of his team’s success, Leichner was named SuperLeague Coach of the Year, Eurobasket.com Ireland Coach of the Year and Streetball Ireland Coach of the Year.

Leichner went to the Demons after serving the previous four at Maine. He was the lead international recruiter and assisted in developing many of the Black Bears offensive and defensive schemes.

Leichner came to Maine after spending seven seasons as a high school head coach in Florida. He had stops at Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Merritt Island High School and Episcopal High School in Jacksonville.

In 1992, Leichner began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Naugatuck Valley Communi-ty Technical College in Waterbury, Conn. The team advanced to the NCAA Junior College Division II national tournament advancing to the Elite Eight. He also served as an assistant coach during the 1996-97 season at NCAA Division II Stonehill.

A 1992 graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Leichner was a four-year letterman, three-year starter and served as captain as a senior. He returned to his alma mater as an administrative assistant for the 1993-94 season and was promoted to assistant coach where he served through the 1995-96 season.

He has been published in the Five-Star Basketball Coaches Playbook. Leichner has coached at numerous additional camps. He has coached a touring team that competed in China and a high school all-star team that played in Spain.

He has accumulated a career head coaching record of 137-83-1 for a .610 winning percentage while earning 10 Coach of the Year honors and six championships.

Leichner received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Connecticut State University in 1992 and his master’s in history from Western Connecticut in 1995.

Leichner, who is an avid traveler, is conversational in German, Spanish and Italian and is an active member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Leichner, and his wife, Traci, have two children, Matthias, who is nine, and Markus, who is seven.

Philippe has deep roots in the AAU circuit, previously serving as head coach for Grassroots Canada Elite AAU after serving as an assistant coach at Centennial College in Toronto.

He played collegiately at the University of Prince Edward Island for a pair of seasons before moving onto St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he led the team to a pair of appearances in the AUS Championship game and the CIS National Tournament twice. Philippe consistently ranked in the top-10 in the AUS individually in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocked shots and offensive rebounding. He won numerous All-Star and All-Conference awards.

Philippe and his wife, Toni, have a son, Isaac, who will be three in December. His brother Quddus is well-know in the entertainment industry and is currently the Host of Duets on ABC. On August 30, 2012, University of Maine men's basketball head coach Ted Woodward announced the addition of former Black Bear Jon Sheets to his staff as an assistant coach.

"Jon will be a wonderful addition to our staff and I am thrilled he decided to join us," said Woodward. "Jon was a great player and leader in our program, and we always felt he was a coach-on-the-floor who had a great feel for the game and loved hard work. He is a man of great character, is a tremendous teacher, and will do a great job leading the young men in our program to

great success both on and off the court. We are excited to have him join our coaching staff!"

Sheets, University of Maine class of 2007, played for the Black Bears from 2005-07. During the 2006-07 season he led the team with 3.1 assists per game while making the sixth-most three-pointers in a season with 79. His 145 career three-pointers put him eighth in program history.
