The 2010-11 season for the Randolph College men’s basketball team was one that will not soon be forgotten, as are the four seniors that helped lay a foundation for future successes for the program. The WildCats, led by those four seniors, made it all the way to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Final in onlythefourthyearofexistenceinarguablythehardestDivisionIIIconferenceinthenation. That was last year though, and while that accomplishment shows where the WildCats can end up, reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Clay Nunley is focused onhavinghisplayersworkhardnowwiththebigpicturesortingitselfoutlater.“Iknowitscliché,butwe’retryingtolookatthingsinsmallerpictures, justworryaboutgettingbetter right now, that’s really the only thing we can control right now,” said Nunley. With a group like the four seniors from last year’s team gone, it would be easy to think a void in leadership would emerge, but Coach Nunley doesn’t see itthatway.“WehadagreatgrouplastyearandIfullyexpectustohaveagreatgroupthisyear,”saidNunley.“Startingwithourseniorclass,threeguysthathavebeenherefor four years…we’ll be counting on those guys. The one thing those guys have is the realization that this is it for them…they really need to be setting a tone with their sense of urgency.” Those three players: guards Malcolm Nelson (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) and Julius Thomas (Chesapeake, VA/Stonebridge) and forward/center Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford), should be up to the challenge. Woods-Morrow, the 2008-09 ODAC Rookie of the Year, returns for his senior season after posting 9.1 points and 7.9 boards per game last year. Nelson was having his best season as a WildCat before a knee injury cost him the last part of the season. That injury will not stop him from being a con-tributorinthishislastseasonatRandolph.“Itfeelsprettygood,I’llbereadytogoNovember15,”saidNelson.Thomas,whoshowedspurtsofoffensivebrilliancelastyear,isexcited about his new leadership role. “It’simportantthatwebevocalleaders,notonlyonthecourtbutoffitaswell,”saidThomas.“Oncewe’reonthecourt,it’sourjobhelpeveryoneremem-ber it’s a learning process and to make sure everyone is on the right page.” AnotherleaderthathasemergedhasbeenAll-ODACfirst-teamerandSportingNewsPreseasonAll-AmericanColtonHunt(Whittier,NC/SmokyMountain).Hunt(pic-turedbelow)cameintohisownlastyear,scoringalmost16pointspergametogowithfiveboardsandanODACleading61steals.Hewasnamedfirst-teamAll-ODAC,aswellassecond-team all-state and third-team All-South Region. Hunt has always been a great slasher, but the most underrated part of his game is his shooting from deep, as he shot over 40 percent from three-land a season ago. The backcourt could be interesting this season, as the departures of starting guards Pete Hamilton and Caleb Pearson left a void. Hard working point guard Cameron Colquitt (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) is a natural leader, and it has showed in preseason workouts. Colquitt is a force on defense, but his knowledge and ball handling will be criti-cal to the WildCats success this season. Sophomore Mike Ehilegbu (Raliegh, NC/Ravenscroft) is another name to look out for this season. Ehilegbu is among the most athletic guards in the conference and hisshootingfromdeepisalsoveryimpressive.Ehilegbushowedhecouldcompetelastyear,scoringindouble-digitsfivetimesincludingacareer-high18pointsagainstRoa-noke College. Mehretab is a long, athletic guard/forward who can stroke the outside jumper and rebounds well. The frontcourt could be the deepest position for the WildCats this year, as Woods-Morrow returns as the lead option up front.
