Welcome To 2010-11 Idaho Vandal Men’s and Women’s Tennis

CreditsThis publication was written, designed and produced by Nick Heidelberger of the Idaho Ath-letic Media Relations department with editing and input from Becky Paull, Spencer Farrin and Janel Lee. Head shots by Jonathan Bill-ings of Archer Photograpy (Mos-cow, Idaho). Action and team photos by Spencer Farrin (Mos-cow, Idaho).

Why the “Vandals”? Idaho student-athletes have gone by the nickname “Vandals” for more than 90 years. The nickname was earned by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmundson, whose team played defense with such intensity that area sporstwriters said it “vandalized” its opponents. The nickname first was used in 1918 strictly for the men’s basketball team and officially was adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the student newspaper, The Argonaut, Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, succeeded in their push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Germanic tribes of old.

Jeff Beaman joined the University of Idaho tennis program as head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams in August of 2006, and since 2008 has served as the Director of Tennis and the head men’s tennis coach. In his time at Idaho, Beaman increased the men’s team’s win total in each of his first four seasons. He took over a program that went 2-22 the season before he ar-rived, and eventually earned the program’s first 20-win season on record (year-by-year records date back to 1994-95) when the team finished 22-8 in 2010. Beaman has also put the Vandals on the national map, as he led the program to its highest national ranking in 2010 when the Vandals earned a No. 63 national ranking by early March. The ranking rose to No. 58 in 2010, before Beaman took the Vandals into the top 50 for the first time ever with a No. 46 natinal ranking in 2011. Beaman came to Idaho after serving as an assistant men’s coach at Texas Chris-tian University for one season. In his time at TCU, he helped the Horned Frogs earn a 2006 Mountain West Conference crown, a trip into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 31 national ranking. Two of the players from that team also earned All-America honors. Beaman’s first stop as a full-time head coach came at Barton County (Kan.) Community College, where he was the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000-03. From 2001-03, he guided the men’s program to three straight top-five finishes in the final NJCAA rankings. The team was second overall in both 2001 and 2002 and fourth in 2003. His women’s team finished the 2003 season ranked third in the NJCAA. Overall, he coached six ITA All-Americans and 10 NJCAA All-Americans at Barton County. In 2003, he was also nominated for the Barton County Community College Difference Award. After Barton County, Beaman moved on to the College of Santa Fe, where he started as an assistant in 2004 and eventually was named head coach in 2005. In the inaugural year of the program in 2004, he helped lead the Spin to a No. 5 national ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NAIA national tournament. The team also featured three All-Americans and the NAIA Player of the Year, Ivan Angulo. In 2005, he led the team to a No. 1 final ranking in NAIA and helped five of his players achieve All-America status. Following the season, he was named Coach of the Year for Region 6. Beaman is a certified Level I and II Tennis Coach by Tennis Canada. He gradu-ated summa cum laude from Alabama A&M in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. As a player for the Bulldog tennis team, Beaman was named Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice, in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Beaman is a native of Ottawa, Canada. His wife’s name is Lori.

With seven fourth-year seniors and five talented new-comers on the roster, and coming off the best season in program history, the Idaho women’s tennis team had high expectations heading into the 2010-11 season. And the Van-dals did not disappoint, finishing with a 17-8 overall record to make it five consecutive winning seasons and send their seniors off with a 73-34 record over the last four years. “We had some ups and downs, but overall it was definite-ly a good year. It was an interesting mix of newcomers and seniors,” Idaho coach Tyler Neill said. “I think it was a group that liked to have fun on the court. They enjoyed competing, they wanted to be out there and they had that never-give-up attitude, that no matter what the situation was they’re still trying to find a way to win.” That attitude came in handy on multiple occasions. Four times in 2011 the Vandals were tied 3-3 in a dual match, and faced an uphill battle for the final singles point. Natalie Kirch faced two match points against UAB in the deciding set, as did Barbara Maciocha against Utah State. Victoria Lozano trailed 4-0 in the third set of a 3-3 overall match against Portland, and Molly Knox trailed 4-0 in the deciding third set against Cal. State Fullerton. But in all four matches, the Vandals fought through the odds, and pulled out a victory. “Those come from behind victories were pretty exciting,” Neill said. “We had four wins where it came down to the last match, and we were down significantly in those matches and were able to come back. I think we had more of those matches this year than I’ve had in my entire coaching career previously.” One of the biggest things working with the Vandals in 2011 was the team’s depth. With some talented youngsters holding down the top two singles spots for a majority of the season – freshman Lozano at No. 1 and sophomore Lauren Simpson at No. 2 – it was some experienced veterans who led the rest of the lineup. Senior Silvia Irimescu spent most of the season at the No. 3 singles spot, and Maciocha, Knox, Yvette Ly, Kirch and Alejandra Lozano split up the final three singles spots. Of those

five, only Knox, a junior, and Alejandra Lozano, a freshman, weren’t fourth-year seniors at Idaho. And the experience in the bottom of the lineup paid dividends for the Vandals, as Idaho went a combined 55-19 in the bottom three singles spots on the season, a winning percentage of .743. Maciocha helped that cause with 19 wins in the spring, and 26 on the season overall to propel her to Idaho’s all-time career singles wins record with 86 career wins, breaking Patricia Ruman’s previous record of 79. “One of the things about this team, a thing that I always thought was a strength, was our depth,” Neill said. “Going into the year it was so tough to figure out where to put players in our lineup because on any given day anyone in our top six was capable of beating anyone else. That’s a nice problem to have when they’re all playing at a high level, and being able to count on the 4-, 5-, 6 coming through most of the time, that’s obviously nice to have.” Despite losing an outstanding senior class that helped build the program into a perennial winner, the Vandals have a lot to look for-ward to in the future. Those talented youngsters on the 2011 roster are poised to be even more talented experienced upperclassmen in seasons to come. “Our underclassmen got some good experience this year. Obviously they are very talented and I think with another year under their belt, they will come out even stronger next season,” Neill said.

While the Idaho men’s tennis team has been on an upward trend over the last several years, the 2010-11 season was a record-setting season for the Vandals in many ways. The Vandals earned the program’s first ever top-50 national ranking. Senior Lachlan Reed tied Idaho’s single-season singles wins record, originally set nearly three and a half decades ago. And, the Vandals beat in-state rival Boise State for the first time since the 1980s. In all, Idaho finished with a 19-8 overall record, including a 4-2 mark in Western Athletic Conference play, and advanced to the WAC semifinals for the second straight year. “We had a great year, certainly in terms of number of wins, wins against nationally ranked opponents, achieving national ranking and achieving recognition for individual players,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “We had as much as you could hope for out of the year.” The Vandals started the spring season ranked in the top-75, checking in at No. 73 in the preseason poll, but quickly fell out after a loss to Oregon in just the third match of the season on Jan. 28. But after falling to the Ducks, the Vandals went on a tear of 12 wins in their next 13 matches, including wins over No. 62 San Francisco and No. 59 Boise State on consecutive days which propelled Idaho back into the national rankings at No. 57. Idaho’s win over BSU was the first for the Vandals since April 7, 1988. “There’s a personal checklist of things you’d like to accomplish in your time at a program, and some might be goals such as national rankings and making nationals,” Beaman said. “But beating Boise State was definitely one of the high items on my list, and I never really knew if it was an accomplishment that we’d get, and we did it.” Idaho didn’t play its first home match of the season until it hosted Utah State, Fresno State and Hawai`i in a set of WAC matches the second weekend of April. In those matches the Vandals came away with wins over Utah State and No. 56 Hawai`i, and

narrowly fell to No. 44 Fresno State. The very next week, Idaho owned the programs highest ever national ranking and its first top-50 national ranking when the Vandals climbed all the way up to No. 46 in the country. “I think the top-50 ranking is just another thing on our checklist, another one of our goals,” Beaman said. “First it’s a winning season, then it’s getting into the national rankings, then it’s getting into the top 50. I think the only two things that are left are winning the conference and getting an NCAA bid.” Senior Lachlan Reed went on a 17-match winning streak that lasted a majority of the season, as he put together a 22-4 record in the spring, and went 31-7 overall, tying Idaho’s single-season singles wins record which was set back in the 1976-77 season by Joe Hignight and Rod Leonard, and only matched by Stanislav Glukhov in 2009-10 before Reed. When you couple Reed, who was a first-team All-WAC selection, WAC Player of the Week and WAC All-Tournament team honoree as Idaho’s No. 2 singles player, with Marius Cirstea, Idaho’s No. 1 singles player and a first-team All-WAC selection and WAC Player of the Week as well, and Alex Joitoiu, who posted a 15-10 record at No. 3 singles in the spring, Bea-man feels the top of his lineup could compete with anybody in the nation. However, with Reed and Joitoiu being seniors, that leaves big holes to fill going into next season. “Our top three were as good as anybody in the country,” Beaman said. “Which also for next year means it’s going to be hard to replicate what we had this year. We lose some guys who contributed a ton of leadership and wins, but we did make progress. Our 4-, 5-, 6 guys got better as the year went on. Marius just continues to develop. He’s coming back and he can be one of the best players in the country.”

IVERSON SPEED AND STRENGTH CENTER

HYDROWORX THERAPY POOLThe University of Idaho has a state-of-the-art Hydroworx therapy pool, located on the second floor of the Vandal Ath-letic Center. As many as four athletes can us the pool at a time, depending on the workout and if they are relatively the same height.

Four video cameras are installed underneath the surface of the pool. The feed from the cameras appears on two televisions next to the pool, which helps the ath;etic trainers monitor the athletes’ workouts. A computer and controller above the televi-sion monitors adjust the pool’s jets, lift and treadmill.

The University of Idaho’s commitment to student-athletes can be seen in the continuing enhance, emt and growth of its athletic training, and strength and conditioning services - the most notable being the Norman and Becky Iverson Strength and Conditioning Center. The $3.3 million facility was dedicated on April 30, 2004.

The floor-to-ceiling glass that fronts building and extends down the sides provides a spa-cious view of Idaho’s main campus. Inside, the building is equipped with a full comple-ment of strength-training eqipment.

The 8,000 square foot facility was opened for student-athlete use on March 19, 2004. It is approximately three times as large as the previous training facility and includes a 7,000 foot first floor used for day-to-day strength and conditioning needs. It also includes a 1,000 square foot mezzanine level filled with cardio-vascular equipment used for warm-up, condi-tioning and rehabilitation.

The University of Idaho tennis program recently took a massive step forward with renovations and upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts on campus. Construction was completed on the six Memorial Gym Courts and the four courts available on the Administra-tion Lawn. “The completion of the four Admin Lawn courts as well as the upgrades at the Memorial Gym courts are a huge boost for our tennis program,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “This will not only benefit our program but will also be an asset to Moscow and the surrounding tennis communities.” Construction began in May of 2009 on the courts on the Administrative Lawn and was completed in June. Attention then shifted to the Memorial Gym

courts where upgrades were completed in September and the final surface coat was applied in October to com-plete the project. “They really did a great job, not only on the playing surface but by putting in four very attratcive courts in the picturesque Admin lawn setting,” Beaman said. “The Memorial Gym court upgrades were extremely well done and have added to the courts already in that location.” The men’s and women’s teams now have ten courts available to play competitive matches. Prior to the reno-vations the team was only able to play competitive matches on three of the courts. “Going from three playable courts to ten gives us the ability to host home matches, WAC events and fall tour-naments in the future,” Beaman said. “Ten courts will also have the benefit of running more effective team prac-tices, providing upgraded facilities for HPERD classes, intramurals and use by Idaho students, facility and staff. The upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts are another example of the increased commitment to high quality facilities by the Idaho administration and athletic department. “I would especially like to thank Rob Spear for his role in getting these courts done,” Beaman said. “This project along with the Kibbie Dome renovations and the many other things happening right now and on the near hori-zon, are making Idaho Athletics into a premier athletic program.”

The Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center, also called the “Kibbie Dome,” is one of the unique facilities in all of the NCAA. The Kibbie Dome has been home of Vandal Athletics since 1975, when the barrel-arch roof was completed. In 1976, the building earned the award for America’s Outstanding Structural Engineering Achievement. It took nearly seven years to complete the structure, which is tall enough to fit Idaho’s Theophilus Tower inside. Construction began in 1969 on the site of the former Neale Stadium, which had partially been destroyed by fire. The field and stands were completed in 1971, but it took four more years to finish the unique roof. The east end addition, which includes the athletic department offices, locker rooms, training rooms and a weight room, was completed in 1982. In 2004, the facility began its next phase of improvement, as enhanced academic and athletic support facili-ties were added for student athletes. The Norm and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center was added, more

than doubling the size of the previous weight room to 7,000 square feet. Locker rooms were also expanded to over 14,000 square feet. Team meeting rooms, two student athlete computer labs, study rooms and expanded academic support areas have also been added. Additional expansions are also planned for the near future. The Kibbie Dome is the indoor facility for Vandal men’s and women’s tennis. Idaho ten-nis also uses the dome to train in the winter and during times of inclement weather. The building also hosts football, basketball and track and field.

The floor can be cleared for action on up to nine courts at once and in the winter of 2007 two courts were resurfaced.

Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Small though it may be, Mos-cow has plenty to offer.

More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho.

Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America.

The city’s 22,000 resi-dents are a bright and di-verse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendli-ness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent.

For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out.

Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed

Moscow

in paradise. Since Moscow is nes-tled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportu-nities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fish-

ing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town.

If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of

activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatri-cal presentations and con-certs on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found.

At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hot-ter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

Moscow is:• One of the top 100 Small Arts Towns• Host of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival• Largest of the 27 Moscows in the United States• A U.S. Small Arts Center• A “Gem Community”

THE

A LEGACy OF LEADING

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander.

On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when four students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association.

Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Riden-baugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics).

The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, de-signed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education.

The Administration Building remains the centerpiece

of campus. The hiring in 1908 of the na-

tion’s premier landscape ar-chitects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts, whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus.

Athletics, University of Idaho president Dr. Duane Nellis says, is an in-tegral element of the college experience. It is a way to engage students and alumni, it enhances opportunities not only for student-athletes but for students, and is a way to gain widespread exposure for the University as a whole.

“It is the front porch of the University and a highly visible dimension of the University,” said Nellis, who became Idaho’s 17th president July 1, 2009. “It enriches the college experience. Many of our alums have warm memories not only of their university academic experience but also of the social dimensions that come through athletic programs.”

A native of nearby Spokane, Wash., Nellis earned his bachelor’s degree at Montana State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees at Or-egon State University. He met his wife, Ruthie, at Montana State.

“It’s a thrill,” said Nellis at his introductory news conference. “I feel like I’m coming home. I have so much energy and passion for the work of land grant institutions and the special role they play in education. I just can’t wait to get started!”

Nellis comes to Idaho after five years as Provost and Senior Vice President at Kansas State University. Prior to his time at Kansas State, he was the Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University for seven years.

Previously, Nellis served as provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University, which has more than 23,000 students, 1,600 faculty, an annual budget of more than $730 million, and annual research funding that exceeds $215 million. He oversaw 12 deans and 10 other units, including the offices of the vice provost for information technology services and the vice president for research.

At Kansas State, he was responsible for strengthening its national leader-ship in selected strategic areas through targeted excellence investments, restructured and new programs that augmented student learning opportu-nities, and enhanced diversity and civic engagement among faculty, staff, and students.

At West Virginia University, he led a highly successful capital fundraising campaign, oversaw the planning and construction of a new $60 million Life

Sciences Building, provided leadership that led to numerous college faculty and student successes – among which were the establishment of a National Geospatial Development Center, a Center for Writing Excel-lence, and a Math Learning Institute, a revitalized WVU Press. He also strengthened social justice and related diversity programs across the college and university.

In his professional role, he has served in various leadership positions as well. Nellis was on the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universi-ties Academic Officers Executive Council and was the National Chair Elect until his hiring as Idaho’s president. He also served as president of the Association of American Geographers, one of the largest profession-al geography organizations in the world. He also is past president of the National Council for Geographic Education; past president of Gamma

Theta Upsilon, the Interna-tional Geographic Honor Society; past president of the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and he served as one of 10 members of the National Council of Col-leges of Arts and Sciences Research Universities Com-mittee.

Nellis is recognized nationally and internation-ally for his research utilizing satellite data and geograph-ic information systems to analyze various dimensions

of the earth’s land surface. This research has been funded by more than 50 grants (as principal investigator and co-principal investigator) total-ing more than $3 million dollars from sources such as NASA, National Geographic Society, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He has been recognized interna-tionally for his research and teaching through numerous awards, such as receiving national honors from the Association of American Geogra-phers (AAG) in 2001, the AAG’s John Fraser Hart Award for Excellence in Research, and the Outstanding Contributions Award by the AAG’s Remote Sensing Specialty Group. In addition, Nellis received the Young Research Scholar Award by the Institute of British Geographers, and Kansas State’s University Outstanding Teaching Award and University Advisor of the Year Award, during his earlier tenure at Kansas State.

“Certainly, having com-petitive athletic pro-grams at the University enriches the students’ opportunities, not only as student-athletes, but also for students who participate in the march-ing band and go to the athletic events and par-ticipate in those very ex-citing activities.”

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history.

The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill.

First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes.

In the fall of 2009, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. When the Vandals kickoff against Bowling Green in September, the most visible piece of the remodel will be in place with new luxary seating, a new press box, and translucent panels covering the east wall to match those on the west wall.

Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class.

His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He is in the midst of a two-year term as a member of the NCAA Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization.

“I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-

athlete.”Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high

school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to let-ter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Mon-tana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993.

Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts.

He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan – a junior at Idaho.
