Why Vandals? Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. Idaho’s student-athletes earned the nickname nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Idaho legend Hec Edmundson, whose teams played with such ferocity that area sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the Argonaut, the student newspaper, wrote in a pre-game story, “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.” By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have the name officially adopted as the nickname for all Idaho teams.

First Season

Derek Pittman begins his first season at the helm of the Idaho soccer program, becoming the fourth coach in school history.

Pittman has 13 years of collegiate coaching experience, prior to joining Idaho. He comes to Idaho after spending four years as the associate head coach at Gonzaga Universty. While at Gonzaga he was responsible for the day-to-day training of the defenders and oversaw the goalkeeper training. Under his guidance the 2013 Gonzaga goalkeeping corps recorded its best goals-against average in the last seven years.

Pittman, a native of Tulsa, Okla., was a four-year starting goalkeeper at the University of Tulsa. While with the Hurricanes he earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team honors as a junior and he later led Tulsa to a national ranking as a senior. Pittman graduated from Tulsa with a degree in business administration in 1998 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at Tulsa from 2001-03. Under his direction, Tulsa’s goalkeepers had career bests in saves, shutouts and goals against average in a season. During the 2002 season, the Hurricanes were ranked 12th national and fifth in the Midwest Region.

Pittman played professionally for the Amateur Football Club in England while studying at Lancaster University. After training with the Division I Sheffield United and Burnley Football Club, he returned to the United States and played with the Columbus Comets and the Savannah RugRatz in the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.

Pittman, who is licensed by the United States Soccer Federation with a USSF “A” coaching license, has also coached on the club level including stints with the Pride Soccer Club of Missouri, the Tulsa Soccer Club of Oklahoma and the Little Rock Futbol Club of Arkansas.

In Pittman’s first year at Gonzaga, the Bulldogs put together an impressive run that saw themselves as contenders for a spot in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Before the 2010 season began, the Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the WCC preseason. Gonzaga finished fourth in the standings, earning three league victories.

Before joining Gonzaga, Pittman spent three seasons as the head coach of the Arkansas State women’s soccer program, leading the Redwolves to a Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals appearance in 2009 for the first time in school history. He also led ASU to a program best eight wins along with program season-highs in points, goals, assists, shutouts, saves and goals against average.

Prior to his stint at ASU, Pittman served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri (2004-06) and at the University of Georgia (2003-04). Pittman helped both programs achieve season-bests in shutouts and goals against averages during his time with the Tigers and Bulldogs. In 2003, the Georgia Bulldogs finished 13-10-0 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Pittman and his wife, Amber, have two daughters, Emma, and Jozy.

Assistant Coach

Davis comes to Idaho after spending the 2013 season as an assistant coach at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. Davis served as the Mastodons’ goalkeeper coach and recruiting coordinator. Under his tutelage IPFW set a school record in 2013 for most shutouts in a season (five). Davis has heavily involved with fundraising, monitoring the team’s academics, video editing, and the team’s soccer camps.

“Josh is an experienced coach that will push our goalkeepers to be the hardest working players on the team and improve our team’s overall defensive organization,” Pittman added. “He has deep recruiting roots and contacts in California, which will prove valuable as we continue to broaden our recruiting footprint across the West Coast.”

Davis has six years of collegiate coaching under his belt, spending time at his alma mater Cal State Fullerton, Whittier College and Cal State San Bernardino, prior to joining IPFW. He has also spent extensive time in coaching club level soccer and the Cal South Olympic Development Program.

Davis earned his National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Coaching Diploma and is an NSCAA Associate Staff Member for Coaching Education. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from CSU Fullerton and has a masters in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University.

He replaces former assistant coach Ashley O’Brien. She spent three years at Idaho and served as interim head coach prior to Pittman’s hire. O’Brien accepted a coaching position at Brown University in June (2014).

Davis and his wife, Ali, have two boys—Cole (6) and Wyatt (2).

First Season

Assistant Coach

Laura Jackson, a former soccer player at Iona College and Syracuse University, joined the Idaho staff as an assistant coach in July, 2013. Jackson worked primarily with goalkeepers in her first season. She will help coach the field in 2014. Jackson earned her degree from Iona in May, 2013 and worked with the Iona coaching staff in the spring of 2013 after exhausting her eligibility in the fall of 2012. She has also served as assistant coach in training for the Rhode Island Olympic Development Program.

Jackson holds a Level 1 Goalkeeping license and an E soccer coaching license. In her two years at Iona, Jackson was team captain, a two-time all-MAAC selection and a MAAC all-tournament team pick. She also earned one letter playing softball at Iona. Prior to her time at Iona, Jackson earned two letters playing soccer at Syracuse in 2009 and 2010.

The home of Vandal soccer, Guy Wicks Field is located north of the Kibbie Dome along Paradise Path.

Wicks Field has served as the home field for women’s soccer since the program’s first season in 1998. The pitch has undergone several recent upgrades that include new fencing, bleachers, team dressing rooms and a brand-new Daktronics scoreboard. The field got another facelift in 2012 with new goal-posts.

The facility has a capacity of 500, with bleachers and grass seating in an up-close and intimate setting on the edge of campus. It originally served as the home of Idaho baseball up until 1980.

The field was dedicated in 1969. Wicks served as Idaho’s men’s basketball and baseball coach start-ing in 1941-42 season. Wicks served as an officer in the Navy during World War II, before returning to Moscow to resume coaching in 1946.

Wicks graduated from Idaho in 1925. He spent three season playing baseball for the Vandals.

The University of Idaho’s commitment to its student-athletes can be seen in the continuing enhancement and growth of its athletic training, and strength and conditioning services – the most notable the Norman and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center. The $3.3 million center was dedicated on April 30, 2004.

The floor-to-ceiling glass that fronts the building and extends down the sides provides a spacious view of UI’s main campus. Inside, the Center is equipped with a full complement of strength-training equipment.

As much as it has everything a student-athlete needs to remain in top condition, it has the best in rehabilitation equipment. Among the most notable is a hydrotherapy pool, which features a floor that can be raised and lowered depending on the need at the time.

The 8,000 square foot facility was opened for student-athlete use on March 19, 2004. It is approximately three times as large as the previous training facility and includes a 7,000 square foot first floor used for day-to-day strength and conditioning needs. It also includes a 1,000 square foot mezzanine level filled with cardiovascular equipment used for warm-up, conditioning and rehabilitation.

Idaho Athletic Training Philosophy StatementThe purpose of the Idaho athletic training room and its staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training

room and the services provided therein.

Student-Athlete Support Services With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes.

“We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.”

Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Student-Athlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditorium-style meeting room were also added.

After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.

Damien Garnett joined the University of Idaho staff as the Director of Athletics Equipment Operations and Services in 2009. Garnett came to Idaho after four years as the equipment manager for the Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League. Prior to working for the Destroyers, he was the Athletic Equipment Manager for Olympic Sports at the University of Cincinnati (2001-2005) and the Football Equipment Manager at Lehigh University (2000-01). Garnett is originally from Independence, Ky. He is a 2000 graduate of Wilmington College with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. He and his wife, Jill, were married in 2011. They have two daughters, Katelyn and Maddyson.

Damien GarnettDirector of Athletic Equipment Operations

The Idaho equipment and locker rooms were given a complete face lift in the summer of 2008. The locker rooms were given new fl ooring, tiling and other improvements. The equipment room nearly doubled in size, and a brand new washing and drying system was installed to greatly streamline the cleaning process. Also installed was a new “cubby” system of equipment distribution. Each student-athlete is assigned a lockable cabinet where his/her gear is placed after washing, which makes check-in and check-out of equipment a signifi cantly more effi cient process. In addition to the locker and equipment room upgrades, the athletic training room was also signifi cantly enhanced, a student-athlete computer lab and three new team meeting rooms with full video and projection equipment were also added. These improvements have greatly enhanced the student-athlete experience, and have made the aff ected areas work more effi ciently on a day-to-day basis.

Records

Univ. of Idaho

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dr. Rob Spear Chuck Staben took office as the eighteenth president of the University Idaho March 1, 2014. Staben has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of South Dakota since August 2008. Since 2008, the University of South Dakota has increased enrollment, retention, and graduation as well as research grants. As provost, Staben helped guide the University through state funding declines and helped lead its transition to a Responsibility Cen-ter Management budget model. Prior to his service at South Dakota, Staben served as the associate vice president for research at the University of Kentucky from 2005-2009, acting as vice president in 2007-2008. Prior to that appointment, he was a professor of biology from 1989- 2008 and served as the chair of the biology department from 2000-2004. Previously he was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford Uni-versity from 1987-1989 and at Chiron Research Laboratories from 1985-1986. He was also a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of California, Berkeley from 1978-1984. Staben’s research focused on fungal developmental biology, bioinfor-matics, and fungal genomics. He received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. He has served on National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health grant review panels and recently served on a National Research Council committee that reviewed the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competi-tive Research and the Institutional Development Award programs for the U.S. Senate. Staben taught microbiology, genetics, bioinformatics, and introduc-tory biology and he received numerous awards for teaching. Staben received a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1978 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. He is originally from Waukegan, Illinois. Staben and his wife, Dr. Mary Beth Staben, have three children. Mac is completing a masters degree in political philosophy at Boston College and will begin a dual M.D./Ph.D. program at Boston University next fall; Cal is com-pleting a bachelors in art history at the University of Kentucky and will begin an M.D. program next fall; and their daughter Rae is a sophomore at Stanford University. Mary Beth currently practices internal medicine as a hospitalist in Lexington, Kentucky.

STATE OF IDAHO

• Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. – 8,000 feet deep at some points. • Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls)• Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser)• The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho• The world famous Lava Hot Springs• The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho

• Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play• Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest

• Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America

Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend

Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille.

Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all

over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation

by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the

nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The state-run agency’s re-sponsibilities include researching and

expanding the Idaho potato market.

Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and

gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State.

Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world-famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers.

CITY OF MOSCOW

Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a

small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho.

Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America.

The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent.

For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out.

Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town.

If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found.

At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander.

On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when four students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association.

Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics).

The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education.

The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus.

The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus.

President Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to visit the campus in 1911. He planted the first tree in Presidential Grove.

Through the next 50 years, the campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School of Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, the Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations.

In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure

has withstood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and wailings of rival teams) ever since.

Today, the university is home to over 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning in Idaho and the West, because although it is ever-responsive to the changing needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots and traditions.

Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich history and innovative service is the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a force on campus for more than 100 years.
