Brenda van Stralen returns for her seventh season behind the bench of the Red Flash
women’s soccer team. With 47 career wins, she is the most successful coach in
program history.
In 2009, van Stralen led an injury-plagued squad to the brink of the Northeast
Conference playoffs with a record of 8-8-2 and a fifth-place finish in the regular season
standings.
This season, with a young roster featuring 12 freshman, the veteran coach will aim to
mesh her newcomers with the team's eight returning letterwinners to remain among
the NEC's upper half.
Just two years ago, using a similar mix of experienced veterans and talented freshmen,
van Stralen piloted her team to one of the best starts in school history, including the last
six matches of an eight-game unbeaten streak that started on November 2, 2007 and
ended September 19, 2008 with a 1-0 loss to Youngstown State.
With the exception of a 7-9-3 2007 campaign, the Red Flash have compiled a .500-or-
better season in four of the past five years. She led the program to its most recent
conference tournament berth in 2005, but has missed the postseason each of the last
four seasons by the slimmest of margins.
In 2005, van Stralen directed the Red Flash to its first-ever winning season, posting an
11-7-3 overall record and a 5-2-2 mark in the Northeast Conference, on its way to the
NEC Tournament for the first time since 2001. In her six seasons, van Stralen has had
14 all-conference selections and four ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
honorees.
In the summer of 2005, she coached the Pittsburgh-based Steel City Sparks of the
Women’s Premier Soccer League, where she was named the league’s Coach-of-the-Year.
The Sparks finished with a 7-3-3 overall record and advanced to the league’s
championship tournament.
The WPSL is the only national women’s soccer league in the United States and was
rated the second-best women’s league in the world by the Women’s World Football
Ranking Service.
Prior to arriving in Loretto, van Stralen served as an assistant coach at Southern New
Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H., for three seasons (2001-03). The Penmen
posted an 11-5-4 final record in 2003 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Southern New Hampshire ranked as high as fourth in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America’s (NSCAA) New England Division II poll in 2003.
A 1999 graduate of Franklin Pierce College, van Stralen also attended the Frans Hals
College Sports Academy in Overveen, Holland from 1992-95. As a player, she helped
lead Franklin Pierce to NCAA Division II national championships in 1996, 1997 and
1999, earning NSCAA first-team All-America honors in 1998 and 1999. van Stralen
earned Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors at Franklin Pierce
in 1996, and currently ranks 19th on the Raven’s all-time scoring list with 67 points (25
goals, 17 assists).
A native of Holland, van Stralen competed on the Dutch National Team from 1994-95.
She has coached the last three years in the Pennsylvania Olympic Development Program
after spending five years in the Massachusetts ODP system.
Also a six-year member of the Region I coaching staff, van Stralen has been a member
of the Dutch Coaches Association (KNVB) for the past 12 years, where she holds the
Oefenmeester (License III).

Marcelo Antonelli enters his fourth season on head coach Brenda van Stralen’s staff in
2010 and his second as the program's full-time assistant coach. He spent his first two
seasons with the Red Flash as a graduate assistant.
Antonelli aids van Stralen with everyday activities such as training, games and recruit-
ing, but works in particular with the goalkeepers. With the departure of All-Northeast
Conference goalkeeper Jessica Boyer, Antonelli will mentor Lauren Fearer to fill the void
in goal in 2010.
In limited action over the past two seasons, Fearer recorded two shutouts along with last
year's .811 save percentage in five matches.
Arriving in Loretto after several stops as a player and coach in Italy, England and Brazil.
Most recently Antonelli served as a coach on the 2007 under-15 Brazilian champion
futsal (indoor soccer) club, and played for the ASD Regalbuto club based in Regalbuto,
Italy.
Antonelli grew up playing soccer in his native Brazil’s regional leagues and futsal in the
State Confederation representing his club, Guarani. He also played in his city (Campinas)
Futsal selection, in the several competitions among cities organized by Brazilian govern-
ment.
In 1995 he was admitted into the physical education program at Campinas State Uni-
versity (Unicamp) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. During his time there, Antonelli earned a job as the
soccer team’s goalkeeper, and in his third year at the college, he became coach of the
Unicamp Futsal team.
After college he rejoined the Guarani Futebol Club in the capacity of physical trainer for
the male team (under 16) and coach of the female team.
In 2001 Antonelli traveled to Italy where he played professional futsal for five seaons, win-
ning two Italian Cups. He was elected the best goalkeeper in league competition in 2004.
During the off-season, he coached teams or worked in soccer schools, achieving im-
portant results in both Brazil and Italy. He also has coaching experience in London, where
he worked with the Futsal Premier League and Soccer Skills Republic.

S e a s o n o u t l o o kbrenda van Stralen's seventh season atthe helm of the Red Flash women's soccerprogram could yield a variety of outcomes. With the loss of five starters from last season's 8-8-2 team and the addition of12 talented-but-raw freshmen, it would belogical to conclude that a rebuilding season is in store.
However, the roster also features a totalof eight returning letterwinners in additionto several players with exciting potentialwho will look to rebound after an injury-riddled 2009 campaign. The combinationof veteran returners and the outstandingincoming class could also result in a fifth.500-or-better season in six years for theFlash in 2010.
The uncertainty filters down to the positional level, where several intense roster battles are sure to play out beginning with preseason camp.
FoRWARDSJunior traci Flick and senior chelseatraurig represent the most seasoned forwards on this year's squad, having appeared in a combined 25 matches lastseason. A versatile player, Traurig will alsolog some minutes on defense throughoutthe year.
Flick – who will also see time as a midfielder – registered five points in 2009,firing one goal and three assists. Traurigscored a goal over the first 10 games ofthe season before succumbing to a year-ending injury.
Sophomore tesa mckibben presents oneof this preseason's most intriguing stories. The 5-6 McKibben exploded onto the collegiate scene last year, scoring twogoals and an assist over her first threegames before suffering a season-ending injury at Drexel. The team's top-returninggoal scorer received a medical redshirtand returns to the pitch with freshman eligibility.
Four freshmen will be in the mix at forwardas beatriz maros de carvahlo, ArynAskin, brooke mohney and melissa lookingland will all vie for playing time.
mIDFIelDSeniors Haleigh Dunyon and laurencompton will patrol the midfield in theirfinal go-around with the Red Flash. When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first
established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in
1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to
create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference
for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport
entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations
over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a
burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To mark the NEC’s
30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the Conference will proudly
celebrate its heritage as its builds toward a promising future.
The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing
opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential
both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the
Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for
athletic success, academic achievement and integrity,
sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and
national engagement.
The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold
in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports.
Three years later, a change of name was in order and the
Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With
membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the
next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access
to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and
women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s
golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball,
men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).
Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its
inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island,
Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner
remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined
by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989),
Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred
Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of
Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which
will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to
such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore,
Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.
NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports:
baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s
and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and
women’s golf, men’s and women’sindoor track and field, men’s
and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and
field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming,
men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy...Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those whohave generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club.
The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round.
With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improvedevery day working conditions within the athletic department.
We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward andtake our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athleticsis very bright because you care about our student-athletes.
