HEAD COACH | Burt Paddock (3rd Year)

Burt Paddock begins his third season at the helm of the Panthers after helping DU to their first ever appearance at the NAIA National Tourna-ment in 2009-10.  Paddock has posted an overall record of 43-21 in two years and has seen his team’s break almost every record at Davenport.

Paddock came to DU from Grand Valley State, where he had served as an assistant for the past four years under head coach Ric Wesley. At GVSU, Paddock was responsible for various day-to-day duties within the Laker basketball program, in addition to being the lead recruiter. During the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, Paddock helped the Lakers to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA DII Elite 8. The 2007-2008 Lakers posted an NCAA school record 36 wins all coming in a row to open the season before finally falling in the Elite 8.

Prior to his appointment at Grand Valley State, Paddock was an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s College from 2002-04. Paddock served as the Pu-mas’ recruiting coordinator and was also responsible for pre-season/post-season workout programs, overseeing travel plans and budgetary issues and implementing innovative practice plans.

A native of Indiana, Paddock has strong Great Lakes roots and is a 1997 graduate of Manchester College in North Manchester, IN with a degree in Business Administration. Paddock played four years of collegiate bas-ketball and in his four seasons at Manchester, the team posted a 91-24 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game during his sophomore season. Paddock left the school as its 2nd All-Time Leading Scorer and was named to the All-Conference 1st team three times as well as being named the Freshman of the Year in 1993-94.

Burt and his wife, Carrie reside in Grandville, MI and are the proud parents of their daughters Hannah Leigh and  Rylee.

2010-2011 MEN’S BASKETBALL | 7

2010-2011 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2010-11 Davenport men’s basketball team is more eager than ever to get back to the hard-wood. After a 2009-2010 season in which the Pan-thers won a school record 23 games, and punched their first ever ticket to Branson, Missouri for the NAIA DII National Tournament, their expectations

of themselves remain as high as ever. It is everyone else’s perceptions about Davenport basketball that has changed since Head Coach Burt Paddock took over the program in 2008-2009, leading the program to 43 wins in just two seasons. The Panthers finished last season second overall in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), and has gained the respect of fellow members by being selected sec-ond in the preseason coach’s poll. This team has one common goal: Win Championships.

OutlookAlthough the Panthers lost 48% of their total of-fense, they return eight veterans along with seven newcomers. “This team has some big shoes to fill with the loss of those talented players, but I feel very confident with the combination of our strong newcomers and seasoned veterans, said Paddock. The difference this year is that we have established a strong chemistry on and off the court before the season has even begun,”

GuardsSenior Darryl Nobles (Detroit, Mich.) returns for his final year and will be accountable in providing his share of senior leadership. Junior Lonnie Fairfax (De-troit, Mich.) provides the team with his court vision, featured by a team-leading 2.8 assists per game last season as a sophomore as well as his defensive pres-sure on opposing guards. Junior James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) brings experience to Davenport’s guard position on both sides of the ball. He averaged 11.9

PPG, along with 1.5 SPG, and shot 82% from the char-ity stripe. Sophomore Gabe VanderJagt (Rockford, Mich.) saw action in all 33 games last season, and is counted on to bring an unmatchable level of aggres-siveness on the defensive end. Looking to step up and increase his role from last year’s season is local product Ben Herrema (Caledonia, Mich.).

Forwards Back for his senior year is DU’s All-Time leading scor-er Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) Nate averaged 13.8 PPG and tallied an average of 6.0 boards per game as a junior and ranked second on the squad with an .813 free throw percentage. Two forwards that will look for significant playing time this year and the chance to increase their impact on the squad are senior Kakha Urigashvilli (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Jon Prins (Rockford, Mich.).

NewcomersDavenport has added to its corps of veterans with key players that will add depth and quality to the cause. “I am very excited to be coaching such a tal-ented group of players, added Paddock. I truly be-lieve that our new additions give us an opportunity to be competitive in every game this season. “On paper we are a tough matchup, but what excites me about this team is their eagerness to get on the hardwood and put the time in day in and day out.”

Adding length to the roster is something Coach Paddock can check off, especially with newcomers Jamie Canty (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) standing at 7’0, James Humphrey (Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) at 6’8, Luke Soren-son (Fr., Clio, Mich.) at 6’11, and DeArmond Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) at 6’7. Adding quickness to Pan-ther squad are freshmen Zach Yeagy (Alexandria, Ind.) and JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Canty is a junior college transfer from South Suburban and is expected to have two stellar sea-sons with the Panthers. Alongside Canty in the front court, Humphrey, a Division I transfer from the Uni-versity of Missouri-Kansas City will add not only size, but tremendous athleticism at the forward spot. Sorenson and Davis will look to compete for quality minutes on this deep Panther roster, as well. With the addition of Yeagy, Davenport will be able to stretch defenses with his ability to shoot the basketball. The aggressiveness, competitiveness, and quickness of Ford brings a level of energy to the lineup that is dif-ficult to match.

2009-2010 SEASON IN REVIEWFast Start – Davenport jumped out to a fast 7-0 start highlighted by two consecutive wins over GR-rival Grace Bible College who would later go on and win the NCCAA National Championship. The Panthers also picked up a huge road win at NAIA D1 Southern Nazarene, who finished the year ranked #6 in their respective poll. The run finally came to an end with a 10-point setback to NCAA D-1 opponent Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti.

Putting a Scare into D-1 Eastern Michigan – Placing an NCAA D-1 opponent on the schedule always looks daunting but the Panthers entered their matchup with the Eagles at 7-0 and dominated their opponent for over 39 minutes of the contest. Unfortunately, the game was turned quickly in the Eagles favor as they escaped with a 10 point win. The final result on the scoreboard did not hinder how well DU played against EMU.

Perfect First Go-Round in WHAC Schedule – Dav-enport opened its conference slate before Christmas break with a convincing 74-40 win over Concordia and proceeded to win its first nine games in WHAC play. The streak vaulted the Panthers up the NAIA ranks to #13 in the Top-25, which still ranks as the highest in program history. DU’s highlight of the run was a last-second 61-60 road win over #12 Cornerstone.

First Ever Post-Season Victory – Davenport entered the WHAC tournament as the #2 overall seed after dropping their final game of the season to #11 Cor-nerstone but still entered the post-season as one of the favorites to advance to Branson, MO for the Na-tional Tournament. The Panthers picked up their first ever postseason win over Madonna 84-62 to reach the WHAC Tournament Semifinals against rival Aqui-nas. Unfortunately, DU was unable to advance to the championship game falling by two points 55-53 to the Saints.

At-Large Bid to Nationals – At the conclusion of the conference tournaments, the Panthers received the news that they had been invited to participate in the NAIA D2 National Tournament hosted in Bran-son, MO for the first time in school history. DU’s op-ponent Eastern Oregon also received an at-large bid and handed the Panthers a 74-69 loss making the trip a short stay.

Post-Season Honors – Davenport’s Lorenzo Ecford and Nathan Cox highlighted the 2009-10 All-WHAC teams as Ecford was named WHAC Newcomer of the Year and also 1st Team All-Conference and Cox gar-nered 2nd team All-WHAC honors. Ecford, who joined Mario Scott on the All-Defensive Team, also was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.
