CHRIS CASEY
Chris Casey, a former assistant men’s basketball coach
at Division I St. John’s University, was selected as C.W.
Post’s head men’s basketball coach following a nationwide
search in May 2010
Casey becomes the ninth head coach to take over
the Pioneer program, which has qualifi ed for the NCAA
Tournament twice in the last three years, including an ap-
pearance in the Elite Eight Tournament in 2009.
Casey spent the last six years on the men’s basketball
staff at St. John’s under former head coach Norm Roberts,
serving the fi rst two seasons as the Director of Operations
before being promoted to Assistant Coach.
During his tenure at St. John’s, Casey played a large
role on Roberts’ staff as he was responsible for recruiting,
opponent scouting, player development, on-court instruc-
tion and practice and game preparation.
Casey’s fi rst season as an assistant coach proved to be
one of signifi cance for the Red Storm. St. John’s made a
return to the BIG EAST Championship Tournament for
the fi rst time since 2003, posted its fi rst winning record
(16-15) since that season, collected the most victories
since its 21-13 campaign four years ago and compiled its
best conference record (7-9) since 2003 as well.
In 2008-09, Casey’s guidance helped the Red Storm
equal that win total, propelling the squad to its fi rst BIG
EAST Tournament victory in six years and a postseason
appearance in the CBI.
Casey came to St. John’s from Central Connecticut
State University, where he spent three seasons as the Blue
Devils’ top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He
was also responsible for game preparation, player devel-
opment and on-the-fl oor coaching at CCSU.
During his tenure with the Blue Devils, the team won
the 2002 Northeast Conference championship and earned
a berth in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Casey
was named an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the
Year.
In his three years with Central Connecticut State, the
team averaged nearly 19 wins per year. Th e team’s league
record during those years was 40-16, and the Blue Devils
advanced to two NEC Championship games.
At CCSU, Casey worked with forward Corsley Ed-
wards, who was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the
second round of the 2003 National Basketball Association

its second postseason appearance since 1985. Th e team
matched the school record for victories in the regular
season and the Raiders qualifi ed for the ECAC Postseason
Tournament. For his eff orts, Casey was named the New
Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to his
time at Rutgers, Casey was an assistant basketball coach
at St. Peter’s College for eight years. He served as the
team’s recruiting coordinator and helped land seven all-
conference players and two players who were named the
conference’s Rookie of the Year. St. Peter’s qualifi ed for the

He earned his master’s in education administration from
Central Connecticut State in 1993.

Marc Rybczyk brings 12 years of collegiate coaching experi-
ence to the Pioneer staff as he joins C.W. Post men’s basketball
for his fi rst year as an assistant coach.
Rybczyk spent the past fi ve seasons at Southern Connecti-
cut State University, four as the head coach of the Owls and
one as an assistant.
Prior to Southern Connecticut, Rybczyk was the head coach at
the State University of New York – Cobleskill, leading the team
to a double fi gure win total in his lone season at Cobleskill.
Before his tenure at SUNY Cobleskill, Rybczyk served as the
lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the Universi-
ty of New Haven from 2000-05. Rybczyk assisted the Chargers
in their run to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, as well as their
appearance in the 2003 regional semifi nal.
Rybczyk began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant
coach at Central Connecticut State University, where he also
played as an undergraduate. During Rybczyk’s time at CCSU,
he helped guide the Blue Devils to a 2000 Northeast Confer-
ence Tournament championship and an appearance in the
NCAA Tournament.
As a student-athlete, Rybczyk led the nation in three point
fi eld goals. He was a four-year starter and held the school’s
three-point shooting record (single-season and career) for 12
years at CCSU. Rybcyzk’s 11 three-pointers in a game against
Long Island University remain a Blue Devils’ single-game re-
cord, and he is currently third on the all-time three-point fi eld
goal list with 235 trifectas.
Rybczyk then played professionally for the Adidas All-
Star touring team from 1995-98 and the Converse All-Stars,
both out of Syracuse, N.Y., as well as the Springfi eld Slamm of
Springfi eld, Mass., from 1998-2000.

Th e C.W. Post men’s basketball team enters the
2010-11 season with a new coach at the helm, but
the same expectations for the team remain. Coach
Chris Casey takes over for the departed Tim Cluess,
and returns a solid core of veterans. Casey has added
several key recruits, and the Pioneers were selected
to fi nish fi rst in the East Coast Conference preseason
poll. Expectations are high for the new coach and his
squad, but the return-
ing core of Pioneers as
well as talented new-
comers look to be up
for the challenge.
Returners-
Senior Gil Montalvo
(Astoria, N.Y.) returns
to the Pioneers for his
fourth and fi nal season,
and will assume a large
amount of the team
leadership. Mon-
talvo’s strength is in his
basketball IQ and his
ability to put pressure
on opposing players, as
he runs the half court
off ense very well. Th e
senior led the Pioneers
in minutes per game
(34.7) and steals (67)
last season and shot
over 90.6 percent at the
charity stripe.
Last year’s scoring leader, Aaron Hall (Syracuse,
N.Y.), returns to the Pioneers for his senior campaign.
He is versatile and brings a little bit of everything
to the team both off ensively and defensively. He is
expected to be a signifi cant contributor to the team as
he was a year ago when he earned All-ECC and All-
Met honors.
Senior Deshawn Gibbons (Roxbury, Mass.) re-
turns to the Pioneers for his second year after averag-
ing close to 10 minutes a game. In his 16 appearanc-
es last year, the senior swing man averaged 2.3 points
per game. Casey emphasizes Gibbons’ versatility and
size as two strengths for the senior, and Gibbons has
the ability to score both inside and outside the paint. H
will play a strong role on the defensive side of the ball.
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.), last year’s
ECC Rookie of the Year, returns to the team for his
sophomore season and has shown good skills as a lead-
er thus far in the preseason.
He has good hands and is
expected to be a leader in
the rebounding department.
Casey expects him to be a
big contributor as he is an-
other player who can score
both inside and out.
Billy Butler (Elmont,
N.Y.) is a returning junior
that brings a tough physi-
cal presence to the guard
position and will play a big
role in the transition game.
Casey expects him to be
a much improved shooter
from last season, where he
averaged 41.3 percent from
the fl oor.
Newcomers-
Sophomore guard Tyreak
Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) will
be to be a key contributor
both on and off the ball. He
comes to C.W. Post after playing at Division I Howard
University, where he played in nine games and started
two for the Bison. Johnson is a tough, physical guard
who is good in the transition game and is a good all
around shooter both inside and at the perimeter.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) transfers to
C.W. Post after playing his freshman season at Southern
Connecticut, where he led the Owls in minutes (37.8),
fi eld goals (166) and three-point fi eld goals (57), garner-
ing a spot on the NE-10 All-Rookie Squad. He is an
on-point and athletic shooter who can score in streaks.

Carberry is expected to play primarily as a two-guard
but could also see time at the wing this season.
Junior transfer Stefan Bonneau (Middletown,
N.Y.) joins the Pioneers from Orange Community Col-
lege and is also a combo guard who plays very well off
the ball. He is an athletic perimeter defender and is
good at pressuring the ball.
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) is also a
newcomer to the team coming from a successful high
school program at Mount Vernon High School. He is
very athletic and has to ability to be a big shot blocker
during his career. He is also expected to be a big help
on the defensive side of the ball both inside and on the
perimeter. One of his strengths is the ability to slash to
the goal, and the Pioneers will look for good production
from him during his freshman campaign.
Freshman forward Amir Tarif (New York, N.Y.)
worked hard in the preseason and has shown good po-
tential in the early going of the season. He will primar-
ily be an inside presence for the Pioneers but also has
the ability to step back and shoot from the perimeter.
Th e biggest part of his game that Casey anticipates is his
rebounding ability.
William Slinkosky (Holbrook, N.Y.) transferred
from Suff olk Community College where he was a com-
bo guard and played both the 1 and 2 positions well. He
is a good shooter and is a tough physical defender.
Although the Pioneers tied for fi rst in the ECC
preseason poll with Bridgeport, Casey knows that it is
where the team fi nishes in the standings that is most
important. Casey notes that it is a very high-caliber
schedule with a lot of diffi cult road games which are the
toughest thing for a college basketball team to over-
come. However, he is confi dent that the challenging
road-laden non-conference schedule, primarily with
the Northeast-10 opponents, will prepare his team for
conference play when it begins on December 1.
