WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Three Pac-10 women’s basketball teams earned trips to the 2011 Division I NCAA Tournament, the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Committee announced today with the release of the 64-team !eld. It is the eighth time in nine years at least three league teams participate in the NCAA Tournament.

Ranked No. 2 in the country, Pac-10 Champion STANFORD (29-2, 18-0) earned the No. 1 seed in the Spokane Regional, the team’s second-consecutive No. 1 seed. The Cardinal, who captured the league tournament crown for the !fth-straight year, have advanced to the national title game in two of the last three seasons, making three trips to the NCAA Final Four in as many years. Stanford hosts Big West Champion and 16-seed UC Davis (24-8), #8-seed Texas Tech (22-10) and ninth-seeded St. John’s (21-10) at Maples Pavilion for the !rst and second rounds on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21, and opens its national-championship run against the Aggies. Making its 25th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Cardinal have won its last 61-consecutive games in Maples, the second-longest active streak in the NCAA.

PAC-10 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WEEKLY RELEASE // March 15, 2011 5

PAC-10 CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF WOMEN’S SPORTS

It is a landmark year for the Pac-10 as it celebrates 25 years of women’s athletics in 2010-2011.

Since expanding to add 10 women’s sports in 1986-87, the Conference has been the leader of excellence in women’s athletics, winning more NCAA titles than any other conference. Pac-10 teams have won 123 women’s national titles, 106 coming over the last 25 years, easily outdistancing the SEC, which is second on the list with 74. In 1993, the Pac-10 added women’s soccer, for a total of 11 total women’s sports sponsored by the Pac-10.

Since the NCAA began conducting women’s championships 29 years ago, Pac-10 mem-bers have claimed at least four national titles in a single season on 21 occasions. Pac-10 institutions have dominated a number of sports, winning 22 softball titles, 13 of the last 21 trophies in golf, and 11 in swimming and diving.

Visit www.pac-10.org/Women25Years for original content - including feature stories, pro!les and video - on many of the women athletes across all sports who made an impact on women’s athletics in the Pac-10 Conference over the last 25 years and more.

CONFERENCE SEASON NOTESdepartment representative. Gemelos has battled multiple season-ending knee injuries her !rst three seasons in Los Angeles, !nally making her collegiate debut last February. She is competing in her !rst full campaign in 2010-11.

VANDERVEER NAMED FINALIST FOR NAI-SMITH HALL OF FAME: Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer was named a !nalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, joining 11 oth-ers who are under consideration for induction, including Alvin Attles, Teresa Edwards, Maurice Cheeks, Herb Magee, Dick Motta, Chris Mullin, Hank Nichols, Dennis Rodman, Ralph Sampson, Jamaal Wilkes and Tex Winter. This season, VanDerveer became one of only six women’s basketball coaches in NCAA history to amass 800 victories.

ORE’S JOHNSON EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS: Oregon’s JR F Amanda Johnson was voted to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America !rst team. Johnson is just the second Duck in the his-tory of the program to earn the honor. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude in psychology and sociology from Oregon.

PAC-10 HONORS LEGENDARY JOHN WOODEN: The Pac-10 will honor the legacy of legendary UCLA head coach John Wooden throughout the 2010-11 campaign. To honor Coach Wooden and his legacy, the Pac-10 is producing a Sportsmanship PSA that will share the teachings of his Pyramid of Success in each home arena throughout the season. The Conference will have a special in-game presenta-tion to the Wooden Family during the Paci!c Life Pac-10 Basketball Tournament, and has renamed the Pac-10 Coach of the Year Award in both men’s and women’s basketball to the John Wooden Coach of the Year Award. No one has had a greater impact on college basketball than Wooden, who led UCLA to an un-precedented 10 NCAA Championships during his !nal 12 seasons as head coach. During his 27-years in Westwood, he amassed 620 wins, in-cluding a record winning streak of 88 games and posted four perfect 30-0 seasons. However, as in-credible as his resume reads, he may be most re-membered for the words of wisdom and life lessons he shared with anyone who was fortunate enough to cross his path.

RECORDS WERE MEANT TO BE BROKEN: Three records have been broken so far this season, with Oregon claiming two of the marks. The Ducks attempted a league-record 40 threes in a loss at Washington State on Feb. 5, 2011, breaking the previous mark of 37 set by Stanford in 2002 and equaled by USC in 2009. Oregon’s opener at Matthew Knight Arena drew a Pac-10 women’s basketball record of 12,320 fans on Jan. 23. Stanford is currently on a 52-game win streak against Pac-10 opponents (including regular-season and postseason games), a league record, breaking the previous record of 48 held by the Car-dinal from Feb. 1995-Jan. 1998.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Nine Conference teams entered league play with a winning record, the !rst time since 2005-06 that many teams opened the Pac-10 schedule above .500 and only the sixth time ever.

HISTORIC WINS: On December 30, Stanford picked up one of the biggest upsets in women’s basketball history, defeating then-No. 1 Connecti-cut to snap an NCAA-record 90-game winning streak. The win extended the Cardinal’s own home-court win streak to 52 games, currently the second-longest in the NCAA. Prior to the Cardinal’s victory in December, Stanford had been the last team to have defeated UConn. The Huskies’ last loss before the start of the winning streak was an 82-73 Stanford win in the NCAA Final Four in Tampa, Fla., on April 6, 2008. The Cardinal also snapped another historic streak this season. The Stanford volleyball team halted Penn State’s 109-match winning streak on Sept. 11, 2010. The Cardinal were also the last team to have beaten the Nittany Lions before PSU went on its historic run. Stanford defeated Penn State on Sept. 15, 2007.

PRESEASON RECOGNITION: A combined !ve Pac-10 players have been named preseason can-didates for three of the most prestigious honors in Division I women’s basketball. Stanford’s F Nnemkadi Ogwumike, F Kayla Pedersen, G Jeanette Pohlen were named to at least one major player of the year watch list. Also added to the list was UCLA’s F Jasmine Dixon, who was named a preseason candidate for two awards. Arizona’s Ify Ibekwe was put on the Naismith Award watch list, as well.

ALL-STAR RETURNS: All signs indicate another competitive season as nine of the 15 members of the 2010 All-Pac-10 team return for the 2010-11. Also among the returnees are !ve of the sven play-ers named honorable mention all-conference. Among the all-star returnees is 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year F Nnemkadi Ogwumike of Stan-ford, Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year Bri-anna Gilbreath from USC and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Arizona’s Davellyn Whyte.

PACKING A PUNCH: Five Conference teams re-turned its leading scorer from a year ago, while eight squads welcome back its top rebounder, in-cluding the Pac-10’s leading scorer in Stanford JR F Nnemkadi Ogwumike and the top rebounder in SR F Ify Ibekwe of Arizona. The Pac-10 returns half of last year’s top 10 leading scorers and eight of the top-10 rebounders are back.

NEW FACES & FAMILIAR FACES: Heading into the 2010-11 campaign, the Conference welcomes new head coach Scott Rueck from Oregon State, who returns to his alma mater after 14 successful seasons at George Fox University. The Pac-10 has a mix of veteran and young coaches. Leading the way is 10-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year Tara VanDerveer who embarks on her 25th year at Stanford and 32nd overall. Pac-10 coaches average 7.6 years of experi-ence in the Pac-10.

ROAD TO THE NCAA FINAL FOUR: Stanford was awarded a !rst- and second-round NCAA Tourna-ment site on March 19-22 and is the only site within the Pac-10 footprint. The Huntsman Center is also a west coast site, located on the campus of future Conference member Utah. The only regional site within the footprint is Spokane.
