The Importance of the Torah Fund...

Below are comments prepared by Rabbi Rose for our

recent Torah Fund event:

Shalom dear friends and thank you for coming today to

support the essential work of the Conservative Movement’s

Torah Fund.

It is hard to believe that 15 years have passed since I

was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New

York. Often the passage of time clouds our memories and

diminishes the poignancy of past experiences. And yet, as

strange and as counter intuitive as it might seem, all these

years later, my appreciation for those Seminary days con-

tinues to grow. Those were heady, rarified days; moments

filled with passion, vision, ideology and anticipation. All

goals appeared to be within reach; all hurdles seemed easily

surmountable. In more ways than any I ever dreamed pos-

sible, those five years of “incubation” at the flagship institu-

tion, the fountainhead of our Movement, remain seminal.

One of the most profound lectures I ever attended

at JTS was delivered by the then Chancellor, Dr. Ismar

Schorsch. Professor Schorsch, a prolific scholar of Jew-

ish History, began his remarks by stating a truth that we

all know, but all too often ignore. Jews recite the Brachah

“Shehecheyanu” with astonishing regularity. Thanking God

for “sustaining us in life” reminds us that life is precari-

ous and should never be taken for granted. Thus, periods of

prosperity and tranquility should be savored, treasured and

cherished.

We, the American Jews of the 21st century, surely live

in such a blessed milieu. The liberties we enjoy enable us

to openly practice our way of life, utterly unfettered. This

freedom allows us to not only perpetuate Judaism, but also

to innovate, experiment and reinvigorate our sacred and

wise Tradition.

And it is the Conservative Movement, with its remark-

able network of institutions, which to my mind, best exem-

plifies this spirit of creativity. These professional schools

provide our best and brightest with the tools they will

require to successfully guide our Communities to future

grandeur and glory.

This is what makes the work of the Torah Fund so criti-

cal. The dollars we raise at B’nai Amoona, help provide the

much needed grist for the mills of Jewish vibrancy. Though

some take these institutions and their work for granted, the

Women’s League realizes that the garden needs to be tended

with regularity. We can never become complacent. We must

be ever vigilant. To do less, would be to imperil the heritage

which has been entrusted to us by our ancestors.

Though Paulie and I are unable to be with you at this

year’s Torah Fund event, we send you loving blessings

from the Holy City of Jerusalem. We pray that your efforts

will yield a most successful campaign and enable B’nai

Amoona’s Sisterhood to continue its illustrious history of

outstanding support for the most important institutions to

be found on the contemporary Jewish Landscape.

Le’Eylah U’Le’eylah – May our commitment to our

Movement rise ever higher and our passion for our Judaism

penetrate ever deeper. And may this be God’s Will. Amen!

A Note from Rabbi JoeEach year as we light the Hanukkiyah (Hanukkah me-

norah), we generally sing two songs without really thinking about them. These songs, Mi Yemallel (Who Can Retell) and Ma`oz Tzur (Rock of Ages), posit differing, yet complemen-tary, views of the miracle of the Festival of Lights.

In the song Ma`oz Tzur we praise God Who seems to be the steady force in our lives and in the history of our people. It is God Who works the miracles in times of need and saves us time and again from destruction. This song celebrates the power of prayer as a stimulus for engaging God in our struggles.

Mi Yemallel, on the other hand, praises the human heroes who seem to show up whenever necessary to save us time and time again throughout history from our foes. During Ha-nukkah, it was Judah Macabbee and his brothers. At other junctures in history, there were and continue to be other “he-roes and sages who came to our aid.” This song celebrates the power of prayer as a stimulus for engaging human beings in our struggles.

Ever since the destruction of the Second Temple and the exile of the Jewish people following our defeat at the hands of the Roman Empire, Jews have prayed for the restoration of Jerusalem and for our return to our holy Land. During the late nineteenth century and on into the twentieth cen-tury, this prayer began to be answered by Jews who joined those of our people who had remained on the Land over the centuries since the exile. Finally, in 1948 the State of Israel was formally created as a homeland for the Jewish people, a place where Jews would be the creators of their own destiny once again.

For those who prefer the theology of Ma`oz Tzur, the State of Israel is the answer to our prayers, made all the more necessary following the destruction of six million Jewish men, women and children during the Sho`ah. Finally, God had heard our pleas for a return to our homeland and enabled it to occur.

For those who prefer the theology of Mi Yemallel, the State of Israel is the answer to our prayers, as it stimulated Jews to take action and to demand control over our own des-

tinies. These prayers were answered by heroes who created a Jewish state and especially by those who have defended and continue to defend her against the attacks of her neighbors in the Middle East. The Israeli Defense Forces (I. D. F.) are an excellent example of the theme on which we at B’nai Amoo-na are concentrating this year – the theme of “Making Prayer Real.” Every member of Tzahal (the I. D. F.) is engaged in making real our prayers for a Jewish homeland, where Jews are able to live in freedom, in dignity and in control over our destiny.

As we kindle the lights on the Menorah, we continue to make our prayers real, whether they are prayers acknowledg-ing God’s continued providence or prayers acknowledging the achievements of “heroes and sages.” May God continue to inspire the modern-day Macabbees of the I. D. F. and bless the State of Israel – thereby keeping our prayers real.

New Machsan Sport Dedicated, Honors Jonathan GoldbergIt’s not often that we meet someone who can touch so many

lives. Jonathan Goldberg was that person. In his short 13 years, he inspired many people to feel a little deeper, laugh a little loud-er, and cheer for every person participating in sports regardless of their ability.

By all accounts, Jonathan was a sports fanatic. In 2008, Rick Goldberg, Jonathan’s father, approached B’nai Amoona to build a sports shed on the property, to honor Jonathan’s love of Ramot Amoona and sports. In 2009, the plan was expanded and in 2010, Dr. Rick Goldberg broke ground with the help of friends at HBD to build the sports shed for Ramot Amoona and B’nai Ami.

As camp director this summer, it was my honor to join with campers, the Goldberg family, the Klei Kodesh, volunteers from HBD and Engel Roofing, and the junior board of the Jonny G Foun-dation to dedicate the Machsan Sport (sports shed) on Friday June 25th as the culminating event of Maccabia (sports day). As part of the dedication process, we affixed a Mezuzzah to the door of the Machsan.

“Maccabbia at Ramot Amoona was one of Jonathan’s favor-ite days. It was the perfect day to honor him,” according to Dr.

Goldberg. “The Jonny G foundation is our other way to honor Jonathan, with proceeds from various founda-tion events going to national and lo-cal charities including the camp fund at B’nai Amoona.”

It’s magical that at Chanukah time we are sharing our experience of the dedication of the Machsan Sport. When you drive by the lower fields behind B’nai Amoona and see the big JG, please think of Jonathan, his dedication to sports, and his love of Ramot Amoona.

Social Action … We Do God’s Work!

The Holiday Cookies for Heroes Event

For several years, on Christmas day, B’nai Amoona’s members and their families delivered cookies to about 65 police and fire stations in the area -thousands of cookies. We stopped because it was felt that the police and firepersons really didn’t need the cookies, since many others were donating and perhaps we were just in the way. During this past year, I happened to meet a fire captain and a member of the police department. I mentioned our Drive and why we were no longer holding it. Both men asked that we continue to hold the event. The recognition and thank you means a great deal to the police and fire personnel. But this year Christmas is on Shabbat. So--why don’t we have Holiday Cookies for Heroes on the Sunday of President’s Weekend in February? The Presidents were known for their Service and February is heart month, a good time to say “we care about you.”

Happy Chanukah! Please help the environment during Chanukah. Replace an incandescent bulb with a florescent bulb, each night of Chanukah, after lighting the candles in the menorah.

Operation Isaiah 2010/5770Kudos, Kudos, and more Kudos to Congregation B’nai Amoona for covering our Bimah, on Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, with over 800 bags of food and personal care donations for The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. It was extremely impressive to stand in the back of the sanctuary and look at the Bimah, seeing the amount of food and personal items donated.

B’nai Amoona continues its tradition of being the congregation collecting and donating the most food and personal care items during the High Holy Days season. On Monday evening after Yom Kippur, over 30 volunteers came together to sort and box up the donations. This enabled The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry to dispense these donations quickly. Thank you to all the volunteers who did a fantastic job sorting and packing up the donations. A special thank you goes to our USY’ers, who consistently take time out of their busy schedules, to volunteer and make a difference with many of our community service projects.

Dear Members of the B'nai Amoona Congregation,

Your gift of clothing was the largest Employment Connection has ever received. You have

probably all donated clothing before, but let us take a minute to explain the impact your

donation will really have. Over 1,600 people every year - homeless veterans, exoffenders,

mothers on welfare, high school dropouts - enter our doors to find employment and get their

lives back on track. Some have just come from under the bridge on 14th Street, others have

just returned from prison and are trying make a fresh start, and some have just had a run of

bad luck and are stuck in a cycle of poverty. The clothing you've provided will help these

people obtain jobs, save money, and ultimately become productive citizens who can provide

for themselves and their families.

It costs as much as $30,000 a year to provide public programs to a family of four in St. Louis

and even then they barely squeak by in life. Many returning offenders are reincarcerated at a

cost of$17,000 because they can't pay tickets, fines, or child support because they cannot

obtain employment. It costs a fraction of these figures for us to employ these residents and

it's because of supporters like you that we are able to do that.

The clothing you donated was so nice and I hope the spirit of your congregation carries these

disadvantaged residents to a sustainable job that changes their life circumstances. I would

like to thank Doris Grossman for her extraordinary efforts to make the link between

Employment Connection and B 'nai Amoona. Thank you for opening up your hearts to our

clients and I hope the importance of our mission sticks with you.

Best Regards,

Dave Dietnch Employment Connection

Rabbi Lipnick and I had many important conversations. I will always remember our last conversation. I had told him about James Clavell’s book, The Children’s Story (but not just for children). He had asked to borrow it to read. That day, as he handed it back to me having read it, he said, “We have to talk about this”. Though we never had that chance, I do still talk to him about it from time to time, because his wisdom and his words live on in my mind and my heart. I can imagine him saying, “I loved the book because James Clavell worries what happens if we just say the words and don’t understand what they mean.”

In fact, James Clavell (author of Shogun) poignantly de-scribes the motivation and the message of this book in his candid, “handwritten” message included at the conclusion of the powerful story packed into 50 short pages, revealing 25 minutes of thought-changing, life changing events. The story is the result of an interaction he had with his 6 year-old daughter. She came home from school having learned to recite the Pledge Of Allegiance. When she finished, she asks him to pay her a dime because that is what her teacher told her. After paying her, Clavell asked his daughter what pledge means….what allegiance means. Told that they didn’t learn that, they just memorized it and were to be rewarded, Clavell spilled out the story, The Children’s Story, noting “Normally I write and rewrite and re-rewrite, but this story came quick-ly—almost by itself. Barely three words were changed. It pleases me greatly because it keeps asking me questions…Questions like what’s the use of “I pledge allegiance” with-out understanding? Like why is it so easy to direct thoughts and implant others? Like what is freedom and why is it so hard to explain?” He concludes “The Children’s Story keeps asking me all sorts of questions I cannot answer. Perhaps you can—then your child will…”

Indeed as we celebrate Chanukah, may we remember the Maccabees brave struggle to preserve freedom. May we treasure our freedom. May we not only talk the talk—recit-ing memorized words, but also walk the walk—protecting what we believe…just as Rabbi Lipnick did. May he live on through us…as we teach our children diligently what we be-lieve and why we believe it…so we not only talk the talk, but

also walk the walk. May we walk together on the journey as Rabbi Lipnick did for all he believed. May he live on through us as we teach our children diligently.

I hope you will buy The Children’s Story as a Chanukah gift for yourself and your family. I hope you will read it. I hope you will talk about it and be changed by it.

Thank you for the gift of teaching your children and watching them grow. Wishing you a healthy, happy, mean-ingful Chanukah.

Women’s LeagueShalom Friends,

Chanukah is here and I would like to wish everyone a Festival of Lights filled with joy. There are many ways to celebrate the holiday, and this year I encourage you to attend a special concert to raise money for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. “Music to Feed the Soul” will be held Thurs-day, December 9, at 7:00 pm at BSKI. The evening will feature a variety of talented musicians including Cantor Designate Sharon Nathanson and sev-eral B’nai Amoona members. The con-cert is sponsored by the Sisterhoods and Congregations of B’nai Amoona, Shaare Zedek, and BSKI. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students, and donations of food are encouraged. If you would like to buy tickets in ad-vance, please call Barbara Shechter at 314-576-9900, extension 126.

On Saturday night, December 11, at 7:00 pm, Sisterhood and Men’s Club will join together for an evening of strikes and spares at Tropicana Lanes in Clayton. Our Bowling Night will include two games, shoe rental, soft drinks, pizza, and even a few surprises--all for only $15 a person. Debra and Joel Spigel are planning the program and promise that everyone will “have a ball!” Once again, Barbara Shechter can take your reservations.

Even though this is only Decem-ber, mark your calendar now for Sis-terhood Shabbat on Saturday morn-ing, January 29, in the sanctuary. This year, Sheryl Kalman and Faith Wax-

man are using our beautiful Torah Fund theme of Kehilla Kedosha: Celebrating Community, Woman to Woman, as the inspiration for the morning. Women of all ages will be involved as we lead and participate in the entire Shabbat service. There are still several oppor-tunities to become involved and parts in Hebrew and English are available. Contact Sheryl and Faith at [email protected] and join us for a very special morning.

Finally, October was a very busy month for Sisterhood. “Pretzel-Making with a Twist” led by Nancy Goodman was a delicious experience that every-one enjoyed. In addition, our Member-ship Event coordinated by Lori Wishne and Sonia Breit was a wonderful morn-ing of fashion, friends, and fun. Phyl-lis Marcus from The Clothes Tree in Brentwood had clever ideas for acces-sorizing outfits on our models Elise Krug, Beth Saltzman, and Jennifer Lot-soff. And even though the Sisterhood Adult Education classes began in Octo-ber, new students are always welcome. Come join Rabbi Joe, Cantor Sharon, and a lively group of women every Wednesday from 10:00 am to noon in the library.

Men’s ClubEvery year, I get to attend lots of Men’s Club events

with my synagogue brothers, often without my wife. Since becoming a Men’s Club Officer, I thought it would be great to have an event with our Sisterhood, something that would be fun and included our spouses. Over the past few years, Men’s Club and Sisterhood have bounced around ideas and gone back and forth and tried to plan something but we just couldn’t quite make it happen. Finally, this year we were able to work out all of the details and will have our joint Sister-hood and Men’s Club event - BOWLING. This evening of fun is being chaired by Debra and Joel Spigel and will be at Tropicana Lanes starting at 7:30 on December 11, 2010. For just $15 per person, we’ll supply bowling, shoes, snacks and refreshments. We hope you (and your wife) will join. Please RSVP to Barbara Shechter at 314-576-9990 ext 126 or grammy@ bnaiamoona.com.

We have also already begun another year of our Hear-ing Men’s Voices discussion groups. The next meeting will be at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at B’nai Amoona. These informal discussion groups are lay-led and are on topics of interest to Jewish men of all ages. Some of our past topics have included: respect and reverence - dealing with aging parents; does our work dictate our worth; and fa-thers and sons - what do we want from each other? Snacks and beer are provided at no charge and you can come to any or all sessions. Feel free to let any of us know if there is a topic you would like to suggest. I promise you will not be asked to lead it if you don’t want to.

I also want to give an early reminder to those of you with young children (and nephews, nieces and grandchildren) to mark your calendar for our annual Dad and Me with the

ECC event on Sunday morning, January 23, 2011. This is always a fun morning of breakfast and activities for our young children and their dads (and uncles, granddads and great-granddads). Further details will be forthcoming in next month’s bulletin or at our website.

In case you have not yet had a chance to check out the B’nai Amoona Men’s Club website, it can be found at http://www.bamensclub.org and features a calendar of our events as well as a link to our national organization, the FJMC (Fed-eration of Jewish Men’s Clubs) with its great information and programs. In particular, I want to mention the site http:.//www.mentschen.org, which has many great topics of interest to Conservative/Masorti Jewish men. If you have a few min-utes, I encourage you to “surf ” over to these sites not only to stay up to date with our club, but for some thought provoking articles and learning.

Finally, I want to remind everyone that their 2010 En-tertainment Book coupons expired on November 1, 2010, so now is the perfect time to pick up your 2011 books from the Men’s Club. This year’s book has lots of great money-off deals, and will pay for itself very quickly. More important-ly, proceeds from the book support our Ted Fisher Camp Scholarship Fund. What can be better than saving money and doing a Mitzvah at the same time?

We look forward to seeing you at a Men’s Club event or in Shul. Feel free to stop me or any of the Men’s Club officers with your questions or suggestions.

Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin15December 2010

I know winter days appear shorter resulting from the limited number of daylight hours. But does that also mean the actual hours are shorter too? My life is fueled by Red Bull, and yet I find it difficult to complete my daily to do list. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when I say slowing down to smell the roses has become a foreign phrase, for now.

So, how does this relate to Minyan, and what does it matter?Let me start by stating that B’nai Amoona is blessed

with a plethora of spectacular individuals, who participate in one way or another during daily Minyan. When the Gabbai of each service approaches, giving you a particular honor, you can be certain they have confidence in your ability of completing the task. Which brings me to a recent Monday morning when Ron Heller asked Mel Rayman to read the prayer for our country.

Many of you know Mel, was a solider in the US army where he was injured. Most recently, he suffered a stroke, making reading out loud sort of difficult for him. So, when Ron asked Mel to read the prayer for our country, I have to admit, I was not thrilled.

It was Monday morning, like I said, the Torah portion was long, and now we were reading the prayer o-n-e w-o-r-d a-t a t-i-m-e, with Mel clearly and slowly pronouncing each syllable of every word. I was struck with the reality of what I was actually doing.

Every word was unique and important. Pictures ap-peared in my head of clearing the land of vicious beasts and nations not lifting up swords any more. The purpose of recit-ing the prayer was jumping off the page and I must say, I was proud to be standing in a free country able to slow down and savor every word.

Afterwards, as we gathered to share bagels and banter, I asked Mel if it was ok to share this story. Obviously, you know the outcome. However, I don’t think Mel realized the value he brought to all in attendance that Monday morning. He made us slow down, smell the roses, and appreciate it like I think it’s meant to be read.

Rushing to arrive at the finish line first should be left to marathon runners. I don’t think the prize for being the first to finish praying is one I want to win anymore.

Please join me and your fellow B’nai Amoona members, at the Minyan of your choice, as we pray to the beat of our own needs.

The rst candle is lit on Wednesday Evening, December 1stThe eighth candle should be lit Wednesday Evening, December 8th.

We light these Chanukah lights to remember the miracles, the wonders, and the battles, which God performed for our ancestors in the days of Mattathias and his son, Judah Maccabee. During all eight days of Chanukah, these lights are sacred. We look at them in order to express thanks and praise God for God’s miracles, wonders and deliverance.

Candles are lit on each of the eight nights of Chanukah: one the rst night, two the second, and an additional candle on each subsequent night. The candle for the rst night is placed at the far right of the Menorah (Chanukiah); on each subsequent night, another candle is added to the left. An extra candle, designated as the “Shamash,” (servant) is lit rst – then used to light the others after the B’rakhot (blessings) are recited. Each night, the candles are lit from left to right, starting with the new candle.

On Shabbat Chanukah, the Chanukah lights are kindled before the Shabbat candles. It is customary to use special, extra-long Chanukah candles, since the ful llment of the mitzvah requires that the Chanukah lights burn for at least one half hour after dark.

On Saturday night, the Chanukah candles are lit after Havdalah.

A dreidel is marked with four Hebrew letters: Nun, Gimmel, Heh and Shin. These letters stand for the Hebrew phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham”, a great miracle happened there, referring to the miracle of the oil.

The letters also stand for the Yiddish words nit (nothing), gantz (all), halb (half) and shtell (put), which are the rules of the game! There are some variations in the way people play the game, but the way I learned it, everyone puts in one coin. A person spins the dreidel. If it lands on Nun, nothing happens; on Gimmel (or, as we called it as kids, “gimme!”), you get the whole pot; on Heh, you get half of the pot; and on Shin, you put one in. When the pot is empty, everybody puts one in. Keep playing until one person has everything. Then redivide it, because nobody likes a poor winner.

Recipe for Latkes

Makes approximately 12 palm-sized latkes

4 medium potatoes

1 medium onion

2 eggs

3/4 cup matzah meal ( our or bread crumbs can be substituted)

salt and black pepper to taste

vegetable oil

Shred the potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid.(if using a food processor, use the chopping blade for 2 or 3 seconds after pressing out liquid to avoid stringy y-aways). Add eggs and mix well. Add matzah meal gradually while mixing until the batter is doughy, not too dry. (you may not need the whole amount, depending on how well you drained the veggies). Add a few dashes of salt and black pepper. (don’t taste the batter — it’s really gross!). Don’t worry if the batter turns a little orange; that will go away when it fries.

Heat about 1/2 inch of oil to medium-high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry batter in oil. Be patient: this takes time, and too much ipping will burn the outside without cooking the inside. Flip when the bottom is golden brown.

Place nished latkes on paper towels to drain. Eat hot with sour cream or applesauce. They reheat OK in a microwave, but not in an oven unless you cook them just right.

If you’d like to try something a little different, add some bell peppers, parsley, carrots, celery, or other vegetables to the batter to make veggie latkes! You may need to add a third egg and some more matzah meal for this. For a zesty twist, add some diced jalepeño peppers to the batter! This should de nitely be served with sour cream!

Time-saving substitutions:

Grocery stores now provide many time-saving options for cooking. The substitutions below will save you time in preparing the batter and cleaning up. Sorry, nothing I can do to speed the frying time. You can substitute any or all of these:

Substitute 3 cups hash-brown style shredded potatoes for the potatoes (Simply Potatoes brand works well and is kosher-certi ed)

Substitute 1 cup frozen chopped onions (thawed and drained) for the onion

Substitute 1/2 cup egg whites from a carton for the eggs

New Meaning for Chanukah: Claire Hack’s Israel TripChanukah has a whole new meaning to me this year.

With help from a grant from Pardes and CAJE, I spent three weeks this summer studying in Israel, seeing the land where the Maccabees fought to live as Jews. I saw the remnants of thick, impossibly tall walls in Jerusalem and perceived the reality of warfare in the time of the Has-moneans. I saw the desert hills of Judea, and stood in the waters of the Wadi Kelt that the Maccabees used as a trail through them. On a hill in the Golan I looked down on seemingly helpless Israeli farms and across to Syrian mili-tary positions. I learned of valiant battles to secure those farms and the whole of our modern nation. I listened as members of the Knesset discussed the difficult issue of religious freedom in the modern state of Israel. And being there I appreciated as never before the incredible miracle of establishing a Jewish state—then and now—in a hostile world.

Back in my classroom at Pardes, I’m taking my new insights and sharing them with my 4th and 5th grade

students. When I tell them of Israel’s beauty, of Israel’s development, of the chal-lenges she faces, I speak with experience. I want to thank you all for helping bring me to Israel. I’ll do my best to bring my Israel experience into my class-room. And I urge you to try to see Israel for your-self—in person if possi-ble. As you light the Cha-nukah candles this year, don’t forget to say a spe-cial prayer for the miracle of a Jewish state and religious freedom in our own times. Shalom!

Claire Hack Pardes Kitah Dalet; Hey Judaics Teacher

A beautiful opportunity to honor loved ones and friends is available to members and friends of Congregation B’nai Amoona.

The Special Occasions Wall, in the foyer of the Tober Building, is made up of lasting remembrances in the form of plates of brushed satin brass. The plates are mounted on the wall under a beautiful carved-wood collage.

The collage depicts the history of Congregation B’nai Amoona and major life-cycle events.
