2010-11 OUTLOOK

2009-10 was a banner year for theDavidson men’s swimming and diving team.

At the 2010 CCSA Championships inKnoxville, Tenn., the Wildcat men defeatedGardner-Webb, 907-653, to earn the firstleague championship title in school history.

Individually, Drew Onken was honored asMost Outstanding Male Freshman Performerafter winning the 400 IM and swimming onthe winning 200 and 400 medley and 800freestyle relays. Ben Lane earned MostOutstanding Male Diver honors for a secondstraight season after sweeping the divingevents. Head coach John Young was namedMen’s Coach of the Year after leading hisWildcats to their first-ever championship, anddiving coach Aaron Hintz was named co-Diving Coach of the Year.

Onken, who was named Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention by collegeswim-ming.com for his NCAA B-cut time in the 400IM, returns with a year of experience, poisedfor a breakout season. And with LindseyMartin making a historic NCAA appearancefor the Davidson swimming and diving pro-gram last season, Onken — who set fourDavidson records in his rookie season andswam on two record-setting relays, is hopingto do the same for the Wildcat men.

But Davidson is far from a one-man band, with junior Geoffrey Peitz, who swept thebackstrokes and set a new school record inthe 100 at the league championships, and sen-ior Bryan Droll, the conference’s individualchampion and school-record holder in the 50free, also on the roster. Junior Joe Burquist, who set a school record with his win in the100 fly at the league championships, andclassmate Curtis Chaney won the 200 freeand holds the Davidson record in the 500free, pose additional threats.

With this kind of depth and talent acrossthe board, the Davidson men expect nothingless than a second league championship title.

Distance Freestyle

The school-record holder in both the 200and 500 freestyles, Chaney leads the Wildcatsin the mid-distance freestyle events. At lastseason’s conference championship, Chaneywas the individual champion in the 200

freestyle with a time of 1:39.90 and a finalistin both the 500 and 100 freestyles, finishingsecond and third, respectively. Named 2009Most Outstanding Freshman Male Performer,Chaney will continue to challenge the recordbooks and battle for individual titles at thisyear’s conference championship.

Junior Brian Seo is the Wildcats’ greatestthreat in the 1000 freestyle. Davidson’s topfinisher a year ago, he placed sixth in theevent at the 2010 CCSA championships witha time of 16:52.46. Seo has two seventh-placeswims on the Davidson Top-10 performerslist, (9:51.89, 1000 free; 16:23.96, 1650 free)and will build on two solid years of experi-ence in his third season.

The Wildcat distance corps will also get aboost from freshmen Ethan Levinson andWill Fox.

Sprint Freestyle

The Wildcats have 50 freestyle recordholder Droll on their roster for one final sea-son to lead the sprint freestyle group. Drollwas the individual champion in the event atthe 2010 CCSA Championships, swimming aDavidson-best 20.49 for his first conferencetitle, and swam on the Wildcats’ winning 200and 400 freestyle and 200 and 400 medleyrelays. The senior sprinter is also a WildcatTop-10 performer and was a championshipfinalist in the 100 free, ranked third with atime of 45.69, and finished in seventh in the200 freestyle at the CCSAs.

Peitz has the third best 50 free time inDavidson history, the 20.81 he swam on theleadoff leg of the Wildcats’ winning 200freestyle relay at the 2010 CCSA champi-onship. He is also a Wildcat Top-10 performerin the 100 free (:45.75) and was a member ofDavidson’s winning 400 freestyle relay at lastyear’s league championships.

Behind Droll and Peitz, the Wildcat sprintgroup has great depth with two more Top-10performers in sophomore Wills Cooper andsenior Tennant Brastow. Cooper is fourth inDavidson history in the 50 free (20.43) behindhis fifth-place finish at the CCSAs, where hewas also a part of the Wildcats’ winning 200and 400 freestyle relays. Brastow is a WildcatTop-10 performer in the 50 free, ranking 10th

with a time of :21.37.Sophomore Ben Wilde and freshmen

Quinn Waggoner, Levinson, Thomas Bighamand Drew Gustavson add depth as well.

Butterfly

The Wildcats are led in the butterflyevents by Davidson record-holders and con-ference champions Burquist and Onken.

After finishing fifth in the 100 fly in hisrookie season, Burquist won the event with aDavidson-best time of 49.43. He also swamthe butterfly leg on the team’s winning 200medley relay and is a Wildcat Top-10 per-former in the 200 fly, ranking 10th with a timeof 1:54.98.

A breaststroke specialist, Onken swam thebest 200 fly time in program history at theUniversity of Georgia’s Last Chance BulldogInvitational last season, adding to his alreadyoutstanding rookie resume. It was the last offour Davidson records Onken set in his firstseason with the Wildcats.

As a Top-10 performer in both the 100 and200 fly, Peitz gives the Wildcats anotherthreat, ranking eighth in the 100 fly with atime of 51.80 and second in the 200 fly with atime of 1:51.84. He was also a member of allfour of Davidson’s winning relays at the 2010CCSA championships.

Kerman, a Wildcat Top-10 performer witha time of 1:54.51 in the 200 fly to rank eighth, and upperclassmen Tim Keating and MarcusCarson will contribute in the butterfly eventsalong with freshmen Fox and Bigham.

Backstroke

A capable flyer and critical member ofDavidson’s relays, Peitz is the Wildcats’ starin the backstroke events. The school record-holder in the 100 back behind a leadoff leg of50.06 on the Wildcats’ winning 400 medleyrelay, Peitz won both the 100 and 200 back-strokes at the 2010 CCSA championships. Hiswinning time of 1:48.81 in the 200 back rankssecond in Davidson history and is less thantwo tenths off the record.

Behind Peitz, Davidson has a host of capa-ble Davidson Top-10 backstrokers in Brastow,Kerman, Burquist and Onken. Brastow is aTop-10 performer in both the 100 back and

the 200 back, ranking fifth with a time of52.00 and ninth with a time of 1:53.81, respec-tively. Kerman ranks sixth in the 200 backwith a time of 1:52.04, and Burquist is seventhwith a time of 52.22. Onken is third on theDavidson Top-10 list in the 200 back with atime of 1:49.39.

Carson, Levinson, Keating and Gustavsonwill also contribute in the backstroke events.

Breaststroke

Onken swam onto eight Top-10 lists in hisfreshman season, but he is the Wildcats’ acebreaststroker. With a winning and Davidson-best time of 2:00.25 in the 200 breaststroke atthe 2010 CCSA championships, Onken earnedCCSA Freshman Male Performer of the Yearhonors. He is also a Davidson Top-10 per-former in the 100 breaststroke, ranked sixthwith a CCSA runner-up time of 57.55, andswam on Davidson’s winning 200 and 400medley and 800 freestyle relays.

The versatile Kerman is ranked seventh onthe Davidson Top-10 list with a time of 58.48,and senior Ben Lucas was a championshipfinalist in the 200 breast, finishing sixth at the2010 CCSAs.

The pair, plus newcomers Drew Glenn,Bigham and Gustavson, solidify the Wildcatbreaststroke events.

Individual Medley

In his first season, Onken rewrote theDavidson record books, and the coachingstaff is expecting no less in his second go-round. In addition to his new school stan-dards in the 200 fly and 200 breast, Onkenswam new program bests in both the 200 and400 individual medleys. He won the 400 IMand finished second in the 200 IM at the 2010CCSAs. In his final meet of the season, theBulldog Invitational, he broke his ownrecord, finishing with a 3:49.79 in the 400 IM,an NCAA B-cut time that earned him Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention bycollegeswimming.com.

Peitz was the Davidson record-holder inthe 200 IM before Onken’s arrival, and with athird-place finish at the CCSA champi-onships, the junior remains both second onDavidson’s Top-10 performers’ list with his

time of 1:50.07 and a viable threat for the topspot. He is also a Davidson Top-10 performerin the 400 IM, 10th with a time of 4:10.14.

Kerman remains a Wildcat Top-10 per-former in the 400 IM, sitting at third with atime of 4:03.43 from the 2009 league champi-onships. He swam onto the Top-10 in the 200IM as well with a fifth-place time of 1:54.98 atthe 2010 CCSAs.

Lucas and Seo have also been ranked inthe Top 10 in their Davidson careers and havethe potential to make an impact in the med-leys, as do newcomers Glenn and Levinson.

Diving

Without the services of two-time CCSADiver of the Year Ben Lane, the Wildcats facean uphill battle in the diving events and willneed to get some production out of newcom-er Brian McRae and returning Nick Taylor tomake up the difference in scoring.

McRae was an All-State diving championin Maine and has plenty of potential, whileTaylor scored points for the Wildcats with apair of fifth-place finishes at the 2010 CCSAs.He earned scores of 129.42 and 142.47,respectively, on the 1-meter and the 3-meterevents a season ago.

Davidson opens its season in dual-meetcompetition against Clemson for a thirdstraight season, while East Carolina occupiesthe second weekend on the Wildcats’ sched-ule for a third straight season. In a thirdstraight road meet, Davidson will travel toNC State Oct. 23.

10 DAVIDSON WILDCATS

2010-11 OUTLOOK

Unlike the Wildcat men, the Davidsonwomen’s swimming and diving team did notwin the 2010 CCSA Championship, insteadfinishing in the runner-up spot to FloridaGulf Coast. But even without a team title, the2010-11 team was anything but a failure forthe Wildcat women.

In 2010-11, Lindsey Martin set three indi-vidual school records, three relay schoolrecords and two conference records, wonthree individual titles at the CCSA champi-onships en route to earning MostOutstanding Swimmer honors and becamethe first ever Davidson swimmer to earn aspot at the NCAA Division I Swimming andDiving Championships. Martin capped offthe most successful individual season inDavidson swimming history by earning Mid-Major All-America honors from collegeswim-ming.com.

But Martin isn’t the only Wildcat whoexperienced success. Instead, she’s a part of asenior class 10 strong who have destroyed theDavidson record books over the course oftheir careers. Emily Castle is the school’srecord-holder in the 100 fly and a part of fourschool-record holding relays. JessicaDelgehausen holds the Davidson record inthe 500 free, and Anna Stringfield is therecord-holder in the 400 IM and a member ofthe school-record holding 800 freestyle relay.

Behind these seniors, the Wildcat womenhave a wealth of talent and depth. JuniorLauren Kamperman is the school’s recordholder in both the 200 fly and 200 IM, whilesophomore Kelsi Hobbs made a splash in herfirst season, setting the record in the 100 backand as a part of the 200 and 400 medleyrelays. Sophomore Jean DeOrnellas (200 free)and junior Casey VanTassell (200, 400 and 800free) are also members of school-record hold-ing relays.

So while Martin looks to make it back tothe 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin,Texas, March 17, and maybe take some team-mates with her, the Davidson women haveplenty of talent to once again challenge forthe league championship.

Distance Freestyle

In her final season, senior JessicaDelgehausen is the Wildcats’ leader in the

distance freestyle events. The school-recordholder in the 500 freestyle, Delgehausen isalso ranked second on the Wildcat Top-10performers list in both the 1000 free and the1650 free and could challenge Alanna Ream’scollege records in both. She is also rankedthird among Wildcat Top-10 performers inthe 200 free, an all-around valuable contribu-tor in freestyle events.

Behind Delgehausen, the Wildcat womenhave plenty of depth in the distance corps, led by Allison Cottle and Stringfield.

Cottle swam onto four Wildcat Top-10lists in her rookie season and is poised foranother good year. A championship finalist inthe 1650 freestyle at the 2010 CCSAs, Cottleranks fifth among Davidson performers. Shealso swam in the consolation final in the 500freestyle, finishing 14th to rank eighth on theWildcat Top-10 performer list, and is aDavidson Top-10 performer in the 1000 free(eighth) and the 200 fly (third).

While Stringfield is the school’s recordholder in the 400 IM, she is also a member ofthe Wildcats’ school-record holding 800freestyle relay. The versatile Stringfield is onseven Wildcat Top-10 performer lists, includ-ing the 200 free (second), 500 free (fourth)and 1000 free (fifth). She also swam onDavidson’s winning 400 freestyle relay at the2010 CCSA championships.

Davidson also will get production out ofKamperman, who is a Wildcat Top-10 per-former in the 200 free (10th) and juniorMeagan Madden, who ranks 10th in the 500freestyle, sixth in the 1000 freestyle andeighth in the 1650 freestyle.

Senior Casey Gemunder has also been aCCSA championship finalist in the distancefreestyle events in the past, while sophomoreLillie Seifart swam into fifth in the 500 free onthe Wildcat Top-10 performer list with herseventh-place finish at the 2010 CCSA cham-pionships.

Newcomers Marisa Martinson and MeganMcLeod will also contribute for Davidson inthe distance events.

Sprint Freestyle

Martin, the most decorated swimmer inprogram history, leads the Wildcats in thesprint freestyles. The school-record holder in

the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles made Davidsonhistory when she qualified for the 2010NCAA Championships with her winningtime in the 100 freestyle at the 2010 CCSAchampionships.

Martin was selected the 2010 MostOutstanding Female Swimmer at the CCSAchampionships for winning three individualtitles and two relay titles. Named 2010 Mid-Major All-America by collegeswimming.com,she became the first Davidson swimmer tocompete at the 2010 NCAA championships, swimming in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. She failed to final in any of her three races, but swam a pair of best times, in the 100 and200 freestyles. Success for Martin will onceagain be defined by an NCAA appearance, this year to be held in Austin, Texas, onMarch 17.

Martin is the only Wildcat to advance tothe NCAA championships, but she is certain-ly not the only Davidson sprinter to make asplash at the 2010 CCSA championships.Castle is second to Martin on the WildcatTop-10 performers list in both the 50 and the100 freestyle and was a finalist in both eventsat last season’s league championships. Shefinished fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the50 free and swam on Davidson’s winning 200and 400 freestyle relays.

Behind Martin and Castle, Davidson alsogets plenty of production out of VanTasselland DeOrnellas. VanTassell was a member ofthe Wildcats’ winning 200 freestyle relay atthe 2010 CCSA championships and is also aDavidson Top-10 performer in the 50 free(fifth), 100 free (fourth) and 200 free (sixth). Avaluable relay team member, she is also amember of Davidson’s record-holding 400and 800 freestyle relays. DeOrnellas swam onthe school-record holding 200 freestyle relayand is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 50free (fourth) and 100 free (fifth).

Senior Alexa Richardson is also a WildcatTop-10 performer in the 50 free (seventh) andshould once again contribute to the Wildcatsprint events, while newcomer Liz Macecould make an impact as well.

Butterfly

An important part of the Wildcat sprintingcorps, Castle is also one of Davidson’s ace

fliers. The Davidson record-holder in the 100fly, Castle is also the two-time defending con-ference champion in the event. In addition toher dominance in the 100 fly, she is also aWildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 fly(eighth) and a critical cog in Davidson’srelays. As a sprinter, she is a member of everyschool-record holding relay except the 800freestyle relay and was a part of both the win-ning 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the 2010CCSA championships.

Kamperman holds the Davidson record inthe 200 fly and finished 10th in the event inthe consolation final at the 2010 CCSA cham-pionships. She is also a Wildcat Top-10 per-former in the 100 fly (sixth).

Along with record-holders Castle andKamperman, Davidson will count on seniorCasey Gemunder, a 2010 CCSA consolationfinalist in the 200 fly, Hobbs, Cottle andDeOrnellas in the butterfly events.

A backstroke specialist, Hobbs is also aWildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 fly, rank-ing second behind her performance at the2010 Nike Invitational at Kenyon College. Adistance specialist, Cottle is third in the 200fly behind her swim at the league champi-onships last season. And DeOrnellas ranksfourth on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list inthe 100 fly with her 10th-place finish in theconsolation final at the conference meet.

Newcomer Mace will also get a chance toswim some butterfly events for Davidson.

Backstroke

After an outstanding rookie season, Hobbswill once again lead Davidson in the back-stroke events. With her leadoff backstroke legin the school-record setting 400 medley,Hobbs set a new Davidson standard in the100 backstroke. She also swam the backstrokeleg of the Wildcats’ school-record setting 200medley relay. Hobbs was a championshipfinalist in both the 100 and 200 backstrokeevents at last season’s league championships, finishing eighth in the latter to move intothird on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list.

Stringfield is another capable backstrokerfor the Wildcats, entering her final seasonranked second in the 200 backstroke on theWildcat Top-10 performer list behind herfourth-place finish at the 2009 CCSA champi-

onships. She is also ranked fifth in the 100backstroke on the strength of her leadoff legin the Wildcats’ 200 medley relay at the 2009league championships.

Martin also ranks ninth among WildcatTop-10 performers in the 100 backstroke, andjunior Meagan Madden is eighth in the 200.

Breaststroke

If the Wildcat women have a weakness, itis in the breaststroke events. And yet the ros-ter is full of breaststrokers who could make adifference for Davidson.

The Wildcats have a pair of Top-10 per-formers in seniors Ineke Stegger and HaileySzymczak. Stegger ranks fifth in the 200breast and ninth in the 100 breast.

Likewise, Szymczak is ranked 10th amongWildcat Top-10 performers in the 100 breast-stroke from her performance at the 2009CCSA championships.

Davidson also hopes for production out ofRichardson and junior Juliana Porter, as wellas newcomers Caroline Vrana, LeeCrittenberger and Megan McLeod.

Individual Medley

Stringfield and Kamperman will onceagain lead the Wildcats in the medleys.

Stringfield is the Wildcats’ school-recordholder in the 400 IM and swam into third inthe 200 IM with her 11th-place finish in theconsolation final at the 2010 league champi-onships. She finished fourth in the 400 IM atthe CCSAs a season ago, but swam her pro-gram-best time at the 2009 championships..

Kamperman set the school record with herfourth-place finish in the 200 IM at the 2010CCSA championships. She is second toStringfield among Wildcat Top-10 performersin the 400 IM with her fourth-place finish atthe 2009 league championships. Kampermanplaced fifth in the event at the 2010 CCSAs.

Behind Kamperman and Stringfield,Davidson has two more Wildcat Top-10 per-formers in Stegger and Seifart. Stegger ranksfifth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 400 IM,while Seifart ranks fourth behind her 10th-place finish at last year’s league champi-onships.

Newcomer Vrana could also get a chanceto contribute in the individual medleys.

Diving

With the loss of Kelsey Chisholm andLinnea Buttermore to graduation, the Wildcatwomen will count on junior Jessica Ardeckyand newcomer Kaliya Burton-Akright toscore crucial points in dual and champi-onship competition.

Ardecky finished fifth on both boards atthe 2009 CCSA championships, and thecoaching staff thinks Burton-Akright haspotential to score as well.

Schedule

Like the Wildcat men, the women opentheir 2010-11 slate with three straight roadmeets, traveling to Clemson, East Carolinaand NC State, before hosting CCSA-foeCollege of Charleston, Oct. 30.

After the Nike Invitational at KenyonCollege, Davidson hosts three straight meetsin the New Year, as Georgia Tech, Howardand VMI visit Cannon Natatorium. In addi-tion to competition with Howard, the ‘Catswill also race against CCSA-foes Campbell,Georgia Southern, N.C. A&T and Radford onJan. 22.

Martin and her teammates hope to finishtheir season with an appearance at the 2011NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas,March 17-19.

WILDCAT HISTORY

DAVIDSON WILDCATS34

Martin Selected to NCAA Championships, First Swimmer in Davidson History

Q: You are swimming the 50, the 100 and the 200 at the NCAAs. Do you have a favorite event? Least favorite? Lindsey: My favorite was always the 50 just because it is so short. You gut it, and it’s done. But until this last conference meet, I have always

been better at the 100, just because I have the “sprintiness,” but I also train enough to have the endurance to hold it for a 100. So just so out of theblue, I had a really good 50, and so now that’s kind of my main event, but is kind of a toss up between the two. The 200 is just way too long. I flipat the 100, and I think I should be done right now, but there’s a whole other 100 to go. I’m a sprinter. I want to get it done.

Q: What was your goal going into this season? Lindsey: Really my goal this season, as it is for every season, is really just earn as many points as I can at conference for my team. I want our

women’s team to look really good at the end of the year, and so my number one goal is to win my events at conference. And then after that, Iwanted to go best times. My next goal was just to see what a whole year of training would amount to, and I ended up dropping a lot of time inmy 50 at conference, and that is what ended up qualifying me for the NCAAs.

Q: What’s it like to become Davidson’s first NCAA qualifier? Lindsey: It’s really cool, but it’s not the kind of thing I was expecting, I guess especially in the 50. Because you dive in and it’s just crazy and it

all happens so fast. You just have to gut it and hope it works out. And it was kind of surprising when I touched, and I had gone as fast as I had.

Q: How has your preparation for the NCAAs compared to other meets, like the CCSA Championships? Lindsey: Once you start tapering for conference, you slowly start losing yards and doing more concentrated speed sets. Your practices aren’t

as long. And now that I am past conference, I did about a week of a few harder practices, and now I am just tapering even more. I have nevertapered this long before, but everybody else is in my situation.

Q: What has the reaction been like amongst your teammates and on campus? Lindsey: The team is very excited for me right now. It is kind of hard too because as long as I have been swimming, I have gotten to stick with

the schedule of the team. And right now is usually when we get our break, and we get to sleep late and go play Frisbee, but I have to stay in thewater. So that’s not so fun because the team aspect is what I like so much, but a few girls have been swimming with me, and my roommateJessica Delgehausen is going to come with me. Being there by myself makes it a me thing, and I don’t like that about swimming. I really appreci-ate all the support, but I hate getting all the attention, too, when all the other people on the team work just as hard, if not harder.

Q: What’s your routine like on the day of a meet? Lindsey: I get really intense behind the block. I definitely have had people on the team comment on how I look super scary. I didn’t realize I

did this until recently, but a guy on the team pointed out to me that whenever I am going to swim relays, I turn and look at the people that I amgoing to swim. When I hit the water, I need to absolutely want to get it all out. That’s what I like about sprinting; you don’t have to pace yourself.

Q: What’s your favorite swimming memory this far?Lindsey: Freshman year, we swam UNCW, the last time we swam them in a dual meet. It was our senior meet, and our team hadn’t beaten

them in a really long time. That meet ended up coming down to the last relay, and I actually got to be the last leg. When I turned to breathe, I sawmyself swim myself past the person, and the excitement that we had we won was so great. It was so fun. I loved that so much.

Martin Takes It All in Stride; Prepares for NCAA ChampionshipsAn excerpt from an interview with Martin before the NCAAs, where she discussed what it was like to become Davidson's first NCAA qualifier.
