American anthropologist Margaret Mead once defined a city as a place whereone finds “new voices to listen to and familiar ones to listen to again.” Thissimple, eloquent description captures the essence of our community — a place where people come together to live, learn, grow and connect.

Our community is rich and diverse and each one of us contributes in a special way to its growth and success. We here at Shady Grove AdventistHospital are proud of the role we play — offering care and compassion to ourneighbors when they need it most.

As a community hospital, we are committed to bringing the absolute bestcare to those we serve. In the past year, we have expanded our services to include state-of-the-art equipment and procedures that are not only new toour hospital, but new to the county and to the state. These advancementshave led to life-changing outcomes for many of our patients.

Your support of our mission has made many breakthroughs in care possible. In the pages that follow, you will hear from our patients, in their own words, how you have truly made a difference to so many lives.

Sincerely,

Dennis HansenPresidentShady Grove Adventist Hospital

As engaged and active members of families, schools, churches and workplaces in our community, we know we can use our voices in many meaningful ways. We are parents, grandparents, teachers, employers, civilservants, caregivers. We cheer for our children in their sports endeavors, whisper words of comfort to friends in need, praise colleagues for a job welldone, share insight and advice with clients and customers.

Here at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we use our voices to help our patients every day — encouraging them to take those important first stepsafter surgery, offering words of reassurance and comfort, explaining importantcomponents of care to loved ones, announcing the joyful birth of a new life.

We want to take this opportunity to say “thank you” for all you have done insupport of our hospital. Your role in helping to further our mission has meanta great deal to the many members of our community who entrust us withtheir care.

With the opening of our Healing Garden this past year, we have furthered ourcommitment to healing not just the physical — but the whole person — with afocus on mental, emotional and spiritual support. Listening to the concerns, hopes and dreams of those we serve is an integral part of how we approach care.

The Healing Garden is a testament to what we can accomplish together. Andthere is more work to be done. Each and every one of us, through our individual gifts and passions, is vital to keeping our community healthy andvibrant. Our voices — collectively and individually — deserve to be heard.

Sincerely,

William H. SmithChief Development OfficerShady Grove Adventist Hospital

As part of a vibrant community, we can come together as one voice to accomplish great things.

But each and every one of us also has our own individual voice.

And we all have somethingimportant to say.At Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we are inspired every day by our patients. What they do.  How they live. Who they are. And what they have to contribute.

Here are a few of their stories. We hope they will inspire you, as well.

“I learned from a young age to be resilient and embrace my

artistic side.  You have to be creative to fight cancer.”

Vlada Kalutski was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of fifteen.   Bornin Belarus in 1988, just two years after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, it is possible she was exposed to radiation in milk as a young child.

Vlada’s family came to the United States when she was just three years old, searching for a more stable, safe and productive life. They landed in Gaithers-burg, MD, just ten minutes from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. She later said,“I was incredibly lucky to have a leading expert in thyroid cancer so close.”

For the past seven years, Dr. Vijay Varma, Director of the Thyroid Program at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, has been Vlada’s physician.  She has undergone two surgeries and several rounds of treatments.  There is now noevidence of the disease in her system.

Vlada recounts that she basically grew up under the care of Dr. Varma and histeam.  The Thyroid Program at Shady Grove involves a collaboration of expertphysicians, oncology nurses specially trained in managing thyroid patients, and a Cancer Care Navigation Team. “Cancer was part of my life, my child-hood,” Vlada says. “Dr. Varma made everything so easy for me.  He listenedto me. He made me feel comfortable, dealing with me as a child, on my level.I felt so blessed.”

Vlada recently graduated from the George Washington University with anundergraduate degree in International Relations. An accomplished violinist, she speaks three languages, and is now attending law school.

“I hope to work in international development, as a consultant.

I want to make a difference.”

“I was prepared for the possibility of twins.  But my sonogram

revealed a big surprise.”

When the sonographer announced a third heartbeat, there was pindrop silence in the room. Maheen Mazhar’s first thought was, “I have two hands, how am I going to do this?”   The mother-to-be’s initial shock was quicklyfollowed by elation…and some anxiety. As with any high risk pregnancy, shewould be followed carefully. Bedrest was prescribed for three months.

“My doctor recommended I deliver at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital due tothe sophistication of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),” Maheen explains.  Soon, three beautiful, healthy girls were born. “The nurses whohelped me were extremely caring. I will never forget them.”

The NICU at Shady Grove is rated a Level IIIB, one of the highest ratings attainable. It is staffed around the clock by neonatologists and neonatalnurses. They are all trained and experienced in handling the most complexnewborn situations including delivering twins, triplets and quadruplets.

Maheen and her husband named their daughters after prophets, representingthree religions. Sarah, named after the mother of Isaac, represents Judaism.Maryam, named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, represents Christianity.  AndAminah is named after the mother of Mohammed, representing Islam.

Now just over a year old, the girls “talk to each other in their own language,”according to Maheen. The house is full of delightful squeals and chatter. Andthe soothing, reassuring voice the girls know to be their mother.

“Life is very full. We have many, many blessings.”

“I have always been very active. But progressive, severe arthritis

in my hips made it painful to walk. Less than eight months after

both my hips were replaced, I am back to playing tennis.”

Slowing down was simply not an option for Carolyn Deeley, a former investmentbanker, mother of three daughters, and captain of her tennis team. But debili-tating arthritis began to change the way she lived her life. An avid tennis player, she had to give up the game she loved. “It was very upsetting,” she recalled.

Her physician, Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula, advised her of a new leading-edge toolavailable at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, the Hana Table. Shady Grove isthe first hospital in Montgomery County to use this specialized surgical table, which allows complete anatomical control and access to natural intervals between muscles, requiring a smaller incision and more separating of tissueas opposed to cutting. The new minimally invasive tool is a breakthrough intotal hip replacement surgery.

“I was amazed,” Carolyn remembered. “I woke up and was in less pain than withmy C-sections.” After just three days in the hospital, and one week at the Adven-tist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland, Carolyn went home. “I could go up anddown the stairs right away. My pain level was very manageable.”

Amazingly, just three-and-a-half months after surgery, Carolyn was on a tennis court hitting balls with a ball machine. About four months after surgery, she slowly began playing with friends. In less than eight months aftersurgery, she was back competing in matches and feels like a winner.

“I remember my first match vividly. As I was running from the

baseline to the net to get a shot, I made a mental note to once

again thank Dr. Durbhakula. He had given me back my life.”

patriot.“Today’s generation should look at the freedom and independence

they enjoy and think about how they can serve their country.”

According to his wife, Albert Katoski was never sick a day in his life. A prettyimpressive feat for a man who has reached the age of 88. A father of five, grandfather of six, great grandfather of two and loving husband to his wifeJean for 65 years, Albert is spry and sharp. “Mr. Google,” as he is affectionatelycalled by family and friends, joined the Army right out of high school. He laterwent on to earn a bachelor’s degree and an MBA and to work for the CentralIntelligence Agency until his retirement. Albert is a proud recipient of a SilverStar, the third-highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member ofany branch of the United States armed forces. He earned his Silver Star in 1945,an honor he received for helping an injured soldier to safety.

Certainly no stranger to pain, Albert remembers how excruciating the pain inhis right side was on a recent afternoon. A call to Albert’s physician convincedJean to immediately call 911. An aortic aneurysm had formed in Albert’s chestand extended into his abdomen — called a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm(TAAA) — and it was rupturing. A rupture of this type is usually fatal.

Vascular surgeons at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Dr. Jeffrey Wang andhis partner, Dr. Robert Fox, were able to quickly and successfully performShady Grove’s first minimally invasive repair of a ruptured TAAA, a ground-breaking and complex procedure.

Discharged just 36 hours after surgery, Albert went home to rest comfortably.“Mr. Google” looks forward to sharing more stories about his life with familyand friends.

“I am very proud of my service. I don’t know of a greater honor…

other than honoring your wife.”

“It’s wonderful to work in the community in which you live.”

The Associates in Radiation Medicine (ARM), a physician group founded inthe early 1990s, understands the importance of commitment to community.Dr. Donald Bridges, Dr. Anu Singh and Dr. Catherine Salem have enjoyed along and productive relationship with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Hospitals are the best partners, according to ARM’s founding physician, Dr. Bridges, because they are truly committed to patient care. Formal partnerswith Shady Grove since 1999, the group embodies the same passion for serving the community that is at the core of the mission of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The dedicated group of physicians that make up ARM havemade it their goal to ensure that the best of care in radiation medicine is available to residents right here — so they don’t have to travel far from homefor appointments and treatments.

ARM has grown over the years to now include 14 physicians, and they have madeseveral generous contributions to Shady Grove, including substantial support tofund expansion of important initiatives and services in radiation oncology.

ARM’s commitment to the community is evident, not only in its sustained sup-port of the hospital, but also in its philosophy as the practice has grown. Thegroup makes it a point to hire physicians who want to grow with the practiceand be part of the community. This is especially important because they oftentreat entire generations of families.

“We treat patients, their spouses, and the children of patients,”

commented Dr. Bridges. This type of relationship and continuity,

he added, “is good for our community.”

Throughout the past year, as a result of the generous support of

our friends in the community, we at Shady Grove Adventist Hospi-

tal were able to introduce several new advancements, programs

and tools that are making significant differences for our patients

and their families. Also this past year, we received several designa-

tions, accreditations and awards, which further demonstrate our

commitment to providing our community with the best care.

IN SURGICAL SERVICESIn August of 2010, orthopedic surgeons with The Joint Center atShady Grove became the first in Montgomery County to use theHana Table, a leading-edge tool for minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. This special operating table allows the surgeon to more effectively move the patient’s leg during surgery to best position the hip socket, ball and femur insert forproper fit. The Hana Table also allows the surgeon to take X-raysduring the procedure to ensure precise fit and placement of allcomponents. Anterior hip replacement is one of the newest pro-cedures available to our patients needing hip replacement surgery.

Most patients who are candidates for traditional hip replace-ment surgery are also candidates for the anterior procedure. Patients benefit from the anterior approach to hip replacementin a number of ways. They can often more freely bend their hipand bear their full weight immediately or very soon after surgery. This leads to accelerated recovery time with fewer restrictions and less discomfort during the recovery period. Surgery is performed through one relatively small incision andthere is less scarring. The Anterior Approach Total Hip Artho-plasty is minimally invasive and means faster healing, less timein the hospital and more rapid return to normal activity.

Also in 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital achieved designation as a CardiacInterventional Center (CIC) by the Maryland Institute of Emergency MedicalServices and Systems and was granted continuation of its waiver to providepercutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by the Maryland Health Care Com-mission. These designations recognize hospitals that demonstrate the highestquality cardiac care.

IN CANCER CAREIn the summer of 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital announced it would builda state-of-the-art radiation oncology center in Germantown, expanding access tocancer treatment for upcounty residents. The center, located just off I-270 andRoute 118, opened in April 2011, and provides the latest advances in treatment tocancer patients. Equipment includes a Linear Accelerator, which utilizes the latest technology for providing Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) usingcone beam CT technology, allowing physicians to pinpoint and precisely targettumors, thereby sparing healthy tissue from being impacted by radiation.

IN CARDIAC AND VASCULAR CAREShady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital helped to purchase a new communications system forMontgomery County ambulances that will enable patients experiencing the most critical type of heart attack, an ST ElevatedMyocardial Infarction (STEMI), to receive a faster diagnosis andtreatment when they arrive by ambulance to the hospital. The system, called LifeNet, is a web-based software that allows emergency medical technicians to transmit electrocardiogram(EKG) results from the ambulance to the hospital staff for reviewand evaluation prior to the patient’s arrival in the emergency room.Prior to this advancement, results were communicated to hospital staff verbally via radio or phone.

In 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital earned national recogni-tion for Cardiac and Vascular Services by the American College ofCardiology Foundation for providing the best possible care tocoronary artery disease and heart attack patients. Recognized asone of 135 hospitals nationwide — and one of just three in Mary-land — Shady Grove was awarded the NCDR ACTION Registry-Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) Gold Performance AchievementAward for sustained and high level performance. In addition,Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Medical Library has earned theACTION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Awardfor 2010. GWTG is a database system through the American HeartAssociation that gathers quality data for cardiac care.

Also in 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital officially opened the BarbaraTruland Butz Healing Garden. Located just outside the oncology unit, it offersa space for quiet reflection as part of the hospital’s holistic approach to theemotional, spiritual and physical needs of people in our care.

As part of mission-driven work to expand access to healthcare services forlocal residents, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital hosted free cancer screeningevents throughout this past year. Screening for cancer can result in earlier di-agnosis and treatment and can literally save lives.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is honored to be the recipient of a Susan G.Komen for the Cure grant that will help provide comprehensive breast careservices to medically underserved, low-income, minority women in Mont-gomery County. The program will provide specialized services to decreasethe time between diagnosis and treatment. Shady Grove has also received agrant from the Avon Foundation to support expanded access to breast can-cer screenings in the local community. This grant also works to link medicallyunderserved women to breast health education and screening services.

IN THE BIRTH CENTERIn May 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital became the firsthospital in Montgomery County to implement standard pulseoximetry screening, which can detect congenital heart disease(CHD) in newborns. Pulse oximetry (pulse ox) is a noninvasiveand painless procedure that is done 24 hours after birth, in con-junction with other newborn screenings. It measures the amountof oxygen in the blood, and may help identify CHD before an in-fant becomes critically ill. CHD is the most common birth defect, affecting eight of every 1,000 newborns, yet signs of the seriouscondition may not be visible immediately after birth.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was honored to receive an international award for lactation care — the International BoardCertified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Care Award. Shady Grovebecame the first hospital in Maryland to receive this prestigiousaward. All lactation consultants in Shady Grove’s mother/babyunit are IBCLC nurses who specialize in clinical management ofbreastfeeding. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital delivers 5,000 babies each year and is home to a Level IIIB Neonatal IntensiveCare Unit, one of the highest designations granted.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was recognized among top Maryland hospi-tals in identifying a common birth defect: hearing loss. Shady Grove’s hear-ing screening program for newborns has been rated as “distinguished” by theMaryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). Hearing losscan significantly affect a child’s ability to develop speech, language and socialskills. Identifying loss early can help offset developmental delays. ShadyGrove’s program has been recognized as a model program for the state.

IN EMERGENCY CARE Shady Grove Adventist Hospital received the full five-year, unrestricted re-certi-fication as a designated EMS Base Station from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS). This allows emergency careteams at designated hospitals to use a radio system to provide consultations onpatients to paramedics in the field, which means Shady Grove’s patients are receiving the best, expert care even before they arrive at the hospital.

IN NUCLEAR MEDICINEShady Grove Adventist Hospital's Nuclear Medicine Services have beenawarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT),or CAT scanning, by the American College of Radiology. This Gold Seal ofAccreditation means the Nuclear Medicine department underwent a rigor-ous review and was found to provide the highest level of image quality andpatient safety. Nuclear medicine procedures can help patients avoid surgeryor more invasive tests, and often identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease.

Shady Grove became the first hospital in Maryland and theWashington metropolitan area to use a cutting edge therapy forpregnant women diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder. The disorder, called antithrombin III deficiency, puts a patient at75 percent lifetime risk of clotting. The risk increases duringpregnancy, delivery or any surgical procedure. The therapy,Thrombate III, was recently approved by the Food and Drug Ad-ministration (FDA) for obstetrical use for patients with heredi-tary antithrombin III deficiency. The medication is carefullydosed for each patient and delivered intravenously, drasticallyreducing the risk of clotting. Without the therapy, pregnancyand childbirth can be a life-threatening experience for the babyand/or the mother. Today, because of this therapy, patients atShady Grove Adventist Hospital have healthy babies.

IN PEDIATRIC CAREFor children who may be facing surgery, enduring long outpa-tient treatments or fighting loneliness and boredom during longhospital stays, a new mobile entertainment unit brings smilesand lifts spirits. The Starlight Fun CenterTM features a Sharp AQUOSTM LCD TV, DVD player, and Nintendo WiiTM games. Theentertainment provides a much needed distraction, serving tohelp ease the isolation and fear many children often experiencewhile in the hospital.

Plans are underway for a new cancer center to be built on Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s campus. The center will expand access to a wide rangeof coordinated services and will bring doctors, nurses, pain management specialists and complementary therapies together in one place to deliver exceptional, compassionate care.

When The Aquilino Cancer Center opens its doors in 2013, it will house the mostadvanced technology and leading-edge equipment to fight a range of cancers, including breast, lung, prostate, thyroid and colo-rectal cancers. Patients andtheir families will have access to expert clinicians in medical, radiation and surgi-cal oncology, as well as essential cancer support services, including nurse navigation, social work, nutrition counseling, support groups and more. The cen-tralized support resources and treatment options will allow cancer patientsaccess to care and support in one convenient location, alleviating the stressassociated with having to travel to multiple treatment locations.

Located within the Great Seneca Science Corridor, the center will benefitfrom valuable opportunities for collaboration on the latest cancer treatments, research and clinical trials.

A free-standing outpatient facility, The Aquilino Cancer Center is named forthe Aquilino family of Potomac, Maryland, which has generously supportedthe center in memory of its beloved wife and mother.

“When you’re going through cancer, time is so valuable. You don’t

want to spend that time commuting while maintaining a routine

with your children, your work and the hospital,” commented

Michael Aquilino. “I truly believe upper Montgomery County

deserves and needs a convenient, high caliber cancer center.”

The advances you have read about in this report, which have been responsi-ble for life-changing outcomes for so many of our patients, have been madepossible by generous donations from our friends in the community. ShadyGrove Adventist Hospital Foundation is the fundraising vehicle for the hos-pital, charged with encouraging the community to contribute to the hospital’squest to constantly grow and expand services. Gifts — large and small —mean that the best of care is right here, readily accessible to our families, ourfriends and our neighbors. Every single dollar donated to the Foundationgoes directly to delivering and improving care.

In 2010, the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Foundation was able to transfer over$1.1 million to the hospital and raised more than $2.4 million in new gifts andpledges.

The 25th Annual Golf Glassic raised close to $350,000 to benefit Surgical Serv-ices. And the 2010 Employee C.A.R.E. Campaign raised over $100,000 in supportof Complex Neurological Services. Also in 2010, Shady Grove Adventist Hospitalgave in excess of $27 million in charity care directly to our community.  This sim-ply would not have been possible without the generosity of our partners andfriends.

Support for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital takes on many forms. Some give by participating in fundraising events. Others leave alegacy of generous funding. And still others volunteer their time ortheir services in the hospital.

EVERY GIFT IS MEANINGFUL AND SUSTAINABLE.

“HAPPY HOLIDAYS” A SPECIAL TRADITIONThe Pediatrics Unit at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was full of gratitude thispast holiday season for a member of our community who opened his heart andhis wallet to help comfort children facing hospitalization.

For the tenth year in a row, Adrian Miller of Frederick delivered a van full of newtoys to children at Shady Grove. He secretly asks the nurses for wish lists frompatients every December, and delivers the gifts on Christmas eve.

An employee of The Washington Post, Miller said, “God gave me the chance todo something good. I am returning the favor.”

“MY VOICE MATTERS” SONGS HELP TO HEALWith a song in her heart, a Rockville teenager turned her talent into a compas-sionate gesture for pediatric patients at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Richard Montgomery tenth grader Victoria Lopez designed a high school projectas a charitable fundraiser. She played her guitar and sang while asking for donations for Shady Grove’s youngest patients.

Lopez kept the donation box sealed and opened it at the hospital with Adven-tist HealthCare’s Development Officer Teresa Witt and family friend ManuelSuarez, a long-time pharmacist at Shady Grove. That’s when Lopez learned shehad raised $222! The money went to purchase a temporal thermometer.

“The nice thing is that this thermometer will allow us to take a temperature onthe forehead while a child is sleeping,” according to Peggy Brooke, ShadyGrove’s child life specialist. “It’s less invasive and less disruptive to their sleep, which is really important when kids are sick.”

Every year, we see examples of support from our staff and ourfriends that overwhelm us with gratitude. These are just a few ofthe inspirational stories from this past year.

“I DO” A PATIENT’S WISHMore than 50 family, friends and staff joined together in Shady GroveAdventist Hospital’s chapel to celebrate a very special wedding.

A cancer patient, who was being treated at Shady Grove, and herhusband fulfilled their wish to be “married in the eyes of God” byrenewing their vows. Her nurses decided to throw a surprise wedding for the couple and a reception to follow in the hospital’sfamily lounge. They offered to do the bride’s hair and make-upand arranged donations for flowers, a cake and a catered dinnerby Shady Grove’s Food Services.

“We’re so happy for the bride and groom,” said Fatu Fofana-White, RN. “She said she’ll never forget this day. In the end, shewas exhausted, but she was so happy.”
