Prior to 2015, survivors in Carbon County had two options for seeking evidence collection following a sexual assault -- find their own transportation or contact law enforcement for a ride to Billings. Neither of these options is ideal following a traumatic experience like sexual assault. A survivor may not be capable of finding their own transportation for a variety of emotional, financial, and physical reasons. DSVS staff felt we could do more to help sexual assault survivors in our county.

DSVS initiated a partnership with Red Lodge Fire Rescue to provide free transportation for survivors of sexual assault to the nearest SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examination) program, the Billings Clinic. SANE examinations collect assailant DNA evidence from a survivor as well as conduct a medical examination to assure the health and well being of the survivor. A DSVS advocate accompanies a survivor to help provide support and resources immediately. This partnership has proved to be a successful and valuable resource for survivors.
