RAENEE SAVINHead Coach • Eighth Season • C.W. Post ‘99, ‘04

Entering her eighth season as head coach, Raenee Savin looks to continue to fi eld competitive teams while playing in the challenging Pennsylvania State Athletic Con-ference, unquestionably the most competitive fi eld hockey conference in Division II. Savin’s teams have traditionally achieved great suc-cess in the classroom, recieving the NFHCA Division II National Academic Team award for the past four season. Th e 2009 team put together a 3.38 overall GPA, the fourth-highest team GPA in the nation. Th e Pioneers fi nished 2009 with an 8-9 record, going 2-5 in the conference in their second season of competition in the PSAC. Th e 2008 season was the fi rst one in PSAC competition for the Pioneers, who fi nished a respectable 9-8 overall. Th is followed a record setting 2007, as Savin led the squad to a 16-4 record, the winningest season in school history, and a berth in the NCAA Championships for the fi rst time since 1983. Th e fi nal NFHCA poll saw the Pioneers ranked sixth in the nation. In just seven seasons, Savin has amassed the second-most wins in Pioneers history, with her 61 victories second behind Nancy Butler’s 69 wins. Savin has also seen several team and individual records broken under her tutelage, including the team record for most goals scored in a season (58 in 2007) and longest winning streak (12 games in 2007). In addition, senior Amber Limanni has shattered a num-ber of individual records, including goals in a career (44), assists in a career (23) and goals in a season (23), while Krystal Napolitano broke the record for assists in a season with 13 in 2008, also setting a new career record with 29. Savin became the tenth head coach in C.W. Post fi eld hockey history in November 2002, after serving for four seasons as an assistant coach under former head coach Jes-sica Hammer. During Savin’s tenure as a Pioneer assistant, the team put together three consecutive winning seasons from 2000-02, including appearances in the postseason ECAC Tournament in 2001 and 2002. A versatile athlete during her four years at C.W. Post, Savin played for four seasons with the Pioneer fi eld hockey squad, seeing action for virtually every moment of her collegiate career. Savin also competed for four years on the C.W. Post softball team, helping the squad reach the NCAA Regionals during her fi nal three seasons. Savin graduated from C.W. Post with a degree in Physi-cal Education in May 1999 and completed her master’s degree in Special Education in 2004. She also serves as the Assistant Director of the Pioneer Sports Academy. Savin and her husband, Andy Wetstein, reside in Nesconset, N.Y.

Th e 2010 C.W. Post fi eld hockey team is a senior-

laden squad that is coming off its second season of compe-

tition in the challenging Pennsylvania State Athletic Con-

ference. Th e team will boast six seniors, who all played

prominent roles during their rookie campaigns as the 2007

Pioneers posted a 16-4 record and an NCAA appearance.

Fast forward to 2010, and the same six players look to cap

off their careers with another outstanding season, seek-

ing a PSAC playoff berth as well as a return to the NCAA

tournament. Head coach Raenee Savin, in her eighth sea-

son leading the Pioneers, believes

that this team has the talent, and

more importantly, the motivated

and driven leadership element

that could push them into cham-

pionship contention.

Th e backbone of the Pio-

neers will be the defensive unit,

headed up by three seniors who

have been playing as a unit since

their freshman season. Vicky

DeRosa (Wading River, N.Y.),

Sydney Hagen (Exter, N.H.) and

Kristina Gustafson (Braintree,

Mass.) will form a formidable tri-

angle that will help to shut down

opposing attackers.

DeRosa is a notably

tough defender who will return

as a sweeper for her fourth

season. An excellent one on one

defender, she brings a calm but

resilient demeanor to the squad.

She recovers well on defense and

has crisp passing skills and fi eld

vision, along with excellent on-

fi eld leadership.

Hagen has battled injuries over her four-year

career, but returns 100 percent healthy and brings a war-

rior attitude on defense. She will play center back, serving

along with DeRosa as a defensive leader. Her excellent

possession skills and strong drive make her a valuable as-

set in the backfi eld, and she will help with the transition

game as well.

Gustafson will likely see most of her action as a

defender this season, after seeing some time at midfi eld

over the course of her career. A strong-side back, she

channels the defense well and is a quick and heads up

player when moving the ball up the fi eld.

Th e leading candidate for the left back position is

returning starter Helene Bruckner (Port Jeff erson, N.Y.),

who could very well be one of the best possession players

in the conference. Bruckner has a wicked drive that com-

bines with good technical stick work, and she also has ex-

cellent game sense, making her a valuable player anywhere

on the fi eld. A primary shot option for the Pioneers on

off ensive corners, Bruckner will look to maintain defensive

consistency while also providing off ensive options for the

Pioneers.

Newcomer Kelly Rhatigan (St. James, N.Y.) will

push for minutes on defense

while adding depth to a

senior-laden unit, and with a

strong drive and quick feet,

the freshman has great po-

tential to see quality minutes.

Returning center midfi eld-

er Amanda Miller (Newton,

N.J.) is coming off an All-

PSAC Second Team selec-

tion, and looks to maintain

that level of play heading into

2010. Miller is a possession

player with the ability to take

control of the fi eld and Savin

will look for her to take a

leadership role on the fi eld

as a primary off ensive and

defensive player.

Two juniors, Brie-Claire

Drost (Wading River, N.Y.)

and Kathryn Godshalk

(Hilton, N.Y.) are strong

midfi elders who have seen

starting action over the past

two seasons, and Savin will

look for each player to step into a bigger role this year.

Godshalk brings athleticism and has developed

well over the past two seasons but will need to stay healthy

to be a consistent player in the midfi eld. She is quick with

a powerful shot, and could be an impact off ensive player

for the Pioneers.

Drost is aggressive, quick, and athletic, and could

be an integral part of the midfi eld if she maintains confi -

dence and consistency.

Another junior, Heather Norris (Hilton, N.Y.),

will provide depth at midfi eld while pushing for minutes.

A well-conditioned athlete with excellent endurance, Nor-

ris will provide valuable minutes at midfi eld and possibly

forward.

2010 FIELD HOCKEY

Mia Paltrineri (Middletown, Del.) Kellie Finn

(Goshen, Conn.) and Ashley Oracewski (Bay Shore, N.Y.)

saw a good amount of playing time last year as freshmen,

gaining valuable experience which they will look to build

on this year.

Paltrineri had an outstanding start to the season

last year as she started the fi rst few games of the season

and transitioned well to the collegiate level, but was ham-

pered by a midseason injury. However, she rebounded

to fi nish strong and Savin will

look for the same level of play

from the sophomore, who has

standout stick skills and is an

athletic presence.

Finn had a great fresh-

man year, and gained confi -

dence during the transition to

the college game. She saw time

at both defense and midfi eld,

and has the size and strength

to contribute at both positions

if necessary.

Oracewski is a speed-

ster with tremendous ath-

leticism. A dedicated athlete,

she has played at a high level

during the off season, and will

be an impact player at midfi eld

this season.

Returning senior

Amanda Nann (Hamburg,

N.J.) is a proven goal scorer

who could be one of the top of-

fensive threats in Division II. A

two-time All-American, Nann

will continue to be a goal-scoring threat while also open-

ing up opportunities for her teammates by drawing extra

defenders. A strong weak-side player, Nann has a knack

for fi nishing at close range, and Savin looks for her to put

up big numbers this season.

Nann will benefi t from playing alongside highly

touted freshman Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.), who

will step into a starting role on the forward line. Dragon

was a three-time All State selection, and scored 49 goals in

her senior year alone. She will look to transition quickly

to the collegiate level and play alongside Nann to form a

dangerous 1-2 punch that will feed off one another to put

the ball in the cage.

Senior Amy Lillis (Holtsville, N.Y.) returns for her

fi nal season with increased confi dence and ability. Lillis

has shown improvement every year, and one of her most

valuable assets is her toughness and intelligence in the

circle, as she creates a lot of scoring opportunities.

Freshman Sabrina Pryor (South Setauket, N.Y.) is

an athletic player who will add depth to the forward line.

Pryor comes from a great high school program, which

should result in a quick transition to the college game.

Senior Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) is one of the

top returning goalkeepers in the PSAC, as evidenced by

her First Team All-Conference

selection last season. She

returns in the best shape of

her career and is stronger and

ready for a standout senior

year. Colern is an excellent

communicator and works well

with the defense, utilizing her

quick feet and strong reads to

create a formidable presence in

the cage.

Junior Devon Trenkle

(New City, N.Y.) will provide a

stiff challenge to Colern for the

starting spot, and will continue

to develop while pushing for

minutes in the cage. She has

excellent diving refl exes and is

a good communicator.

Freshman Kerianne Ro-

jas (Townsend, Del.) will likely

redshirt the season, using her

quick feet and good instincts

to continue her development

as the future starter for the

Pioneers in goal.

Th e conference schedule that the Pioneers will

face in the PSAC will be no easy task, as perennial national

title contenders Bloomsburg, as well as national ranking

mainstays Indiana, Kutztown and East Stroudsburg make

appearances at Hickox Field. An equally challenging non-

conference slate matches Savin’s squad up against strong

NE-10 opponents Franklin Pierce, Merrimack, and South-

ern Connecticut to start off the season. A Long Island

fi eld hockey feature pits the Pioneers against neighboring

Adelphi on October 5, and AIC will travel to Hickox Field

to take on the Pioneers on October 26.

2010 FIELD HOCKEY

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s ath-

letics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved

into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate confer-

ences.

Th e fi rst major step came in 1977, when based on a grow-

ing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for

its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a stan-

dard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire

conference to NCAA Division II.

Th e most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09

academic year when the PSAC expanded for the fi rst time in

its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University

and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island

University-C.W. Post. Th e membership now consists of 16 full-

time institutions and the one associate.

All of the league’s full-time members are located within

the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC

the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. Th e league has

also grown to share the distinctions as: Th e largest conference

in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the

NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most

championships at the Division II level.

Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC

schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams

into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s

success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title

winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league

also has evolved into one of Division II’s fi nest from an aca-

demic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-

Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or

better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-

Athletes were fi rst recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Divi-

sion II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level

in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and

claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in

Pennsylvania.

Th e PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member

institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commis-

sioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in

Lock Haven, Pa.

in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University,

and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private

university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300

continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development,

admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and

buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In

achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op-

portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso-

phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the

University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of

Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.”

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post

Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution

since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he

was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in

England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on

a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian

studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary

degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where

he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as

executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught,

lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in

World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi-

tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the

Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major

textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence

of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and

Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when

Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies,

the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple

has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom-
