In this enironmental report we describe the eects o our operations on the
enironment, and our actions, either planned or accomplished, to reduce
enironmental impact in all our countries o operation. Nordkalk has beenpublishing enironmental reports since 1996.

ResponsibleopeRation
We take our responsibilit or enironmental issues,
and we actiel work to minimize the impacts
o our operations to the surrounding enironment.
Many o Nordkalks products contribute to the main-tenance and improvement o the standard o living in
our community. Our products are needed or the man-uacture o many daily necessities, and the products
are also necessary or environmental care, or examplewater cleaning, pH regulation and ue gas cleaning.
Nordkalks operations have many various impacts onthe environment. We use a non-renewable raw mate-rial and we cause changes in the environment in ourmines and quarries. These changes are not possibleto restore completely. We also emit so called green-house gases as the refnement o our raw material
oten includes emission o carbon dioxide (a chem-ical-thermal process rom calcium carbonate to cal-
cium oxide + carbon dioxide).
Nordkalks operations are characterized by the ideao responsible actions. We take our responsibilityor environmental issues, we make our role clearto ourselves and we actively work to minimize the
impacts o our operations to the surrounding envi-
ronment. Concerning our operations, we are verycareul about health & saety concerns and well-being at our operation plants and in the surround-
ing environment.
Responsible actions are more and more oten pre-
requisites set by society as well as by the authoritiesand permit-granting bodies. Local legislation as wellas directives and requirements rom the European
Union call or more knowledge, lobbying and inor-
mation on important environmental issues.
Nordkalk assures its capacity to proactively meetthese challenges by updating and improving theinternal knowledge base by means o education and
recruitment. We are visibly present and we activelyparticipate in important orums as well as in trade
organizations locally and internationally.
Nordkalk meets the requirements o ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and OHSAS 18001, and acts in compliancewith the EU directive on handling o chemicals, or
example. We also actively participate in various devel-opment programmes aiming at a more environmen-
tally riendly industry, or example in connection withMotiva, the Finnish Energy Efciency Agreement.

limestone is a paRtof ouR Daily life
Nordkalks products are needed or the manuacture o a large number o
dail necessities which orm the basis or our current standard o liing.
Nordkalk extracts and refnes limestone or the indus-try, agriculture and environmental care. We all use
limestone-based products daily: or example on our
breakast tables, there are many products, the manu-acture o which has required the use o limestone atsome stage. Limestone is needed or the productiono paper, steel, sugar and glass as well as or water
treatment. Crops grow in well-limed soil, and hens
need lime to produce strong egg shells.
In short: Lime is used or flling, cleaning and stabi-lizing. Its chemical qualities are needed or variousprocesses and in many cases it can be said that the
community is truly built on limestone.
Nordkalk is the leading manuacturer o limestone-based products in Northern Europe and the third larg-est manuacturer in the whole o Europe.
A particularly positive economic development was
recorded in 2010 and the demand or limestone-based products increased considerably. Most o the
customer segments seem to have recovered rom theeconomic depression last year. Still there is uncer-
tainty about the uture market development.
Health and saet are primar issues
Nordkalk continued its systematic work to improveoccupational health and saety in the company. At
present the operations in Finland, Sweden, Poland
and Estonia are certifed according to OHSAS 18001and in Russia the certifcation is expected to be com-pleted in 2011.
Nordkalk is ull-owned b Rettig
On 19 May 2010 Rettig bought the whole share capi-
tal in Nordkalk and on 12 August the agreement wasapproved by the EU Competition Authority. Nord-kalk ceased to be a public company and the Finnishname is now Nordkalk Oy Ab (earlier Oyj Abp).
New limestone uarr on Gotland
Nordkalks plan to open a new limestone quarry in
Bunge on Northern Gotland was ensured in October2010 when the Supreme Court o Sweden inormedthat it will not hear the case. This means that Nord-kalk will invest approximately EUR 50 million andthe operations will continue or 25-40 years. Got-
lands limestone is an ir replaceable raw material orthe Nordic steel industry.
Enironmental permit orthe limestone mine in Kolari
To meet the increasing needs o the mining industry,Nordkalk is going to resume its operations in Kolari
lime quarry in Northern Finland. At the end o Decem-ber 2010, Nordkalk was granted an environmental
permit or extraction. The ull-scale extraction will
reach an annual volume o maximum 400 000 tons.
New dolomite uarr in Estonia
Nordkalks only dolomite deposit is in Kurevere in
South-Western Estonia. The quarry is nearly ully
extracted, and last year extraction was begun in the
nearby Esivere quarry.
Support to enironmental proectsand research
In Finland Nordkalk is supporting the associationHll Skrgrden Ren (Keep the archipelago clean),which is in charge o waste disposal in the archipelagoand actively inorms about environmental issues. In
Nokia, Nordkalk is ollowing up the water quality othe Alinenjrvi lake system and, i needed, a possibleacidifcation is hindered by means o added liming.In connection with the 100-year anniversary o the
actory plants in Lappeenranta on 15 November 2010,Nordkalk donated 100 000 euros to the local Tech-
nical University to support research and education.
In Sweden Nordkalk is actively participating inthe activities o the MinFo association, operations
o which include investments in the environment

and a sustainable development. Nordkalk has also
participated in a survey on the use o alkaline by-
products or solving environmental problems in old
mining areas. The results o the survey were pub-
lished in 2010.
Sstematic enironmental workin entire Nordkalk
The objective o the environmental work is to sys-
tematically emphasize primary goals or improve-
ment and to maintain an environmental managementsystem in cooperation with the line organizations.
Nordkalks operations in Finland, Sweden and Polandhave already earlier been certifed according to ISO14001 and this was expanded to include Estonia as
well in 2010. The objective is to certiy the opera-
tions in Russia in 2011.
This year the Environmental Manager o the cor-
poration, Tua Welin was awarded with NordkalksAward o Merit, the Environmental Achievement
o the Year 2010, or managing and registering limeproducts in compliance with REACH, the EuropeanCommunity Regulation on Chemicals.

In comparison to the year earlier, the number ooccupational accidents in the whole Group rosesomewhat in 2010. This is partly due to the increasedactivities and to an integrated reporting system. The
most common injuries are slipping and stumbling.
Last year there were no injuries with lethal outcome.
Reports on near misses and other hazardous situa-
tions received much attention. The production unitsare encouraged to stimulate reporting by means o
various prizes and campaigns. This led to results:
The number o reports doubled in comparison to2009 and a total o ca 1000 near-miss incidentswere reported. By correcting hazardous conditionsin the work environment, it is possible to prevent
accidents. As the employees report about risks andhazards they simultaneously become more awareo saety issues.
Saety revisions are a possibility to infuence
In 2010 a lot o work was done to improve issues con-cerning the saety management system. The objec-tive is to certiy all production locations according to
OHSAS 18001. Many employees participated in the
work and in risk assessment o dierent work tasks;
many had an opportunity to inuence on his or her
work and the work environment. At the end o the
year the certifcation was granted in Finland, Swe-den, Poland and Estonia to the locations that had not
previously been certifed. The organization in Russiawill be audited in spring 2011.
Saety audits concerning heavy machinery and min-ing continued. All the biggest mines in all operationalcountries have been audited. The audits oered an
excellent opportunity to improve the saety routines
in the whole corporation.
Saet is an attitude issue
A policy o zero tolerance or drugs and alcohol thatbegan in 2009 is still prevailing. The policy, which
concerns the whole group, was implemented in amanner that is supported by local regulations aswell as local culture. The superiors were given spe-cifc methods in order to deal with aults. The mostimportant message o the zero tolerance policy isor all to have the right attitude towards questions
concerning saety and wellbeing. The employeeshave been inormed about health related and social
eects o intoxicants.
For the frst time a Health & Saety Day was arrangedon corporation level, and it joined partic ipants romall operational countries. The objective o the H&SDay is to convey knowledge and readiness and topresent a possibility to exchange experiences.
The employees get on well and are motivated
In autumn 2010 an employee survey was carriedout and it showed that the Nordkalk employees are
happy with their jobs. Development needs that were
identifed in the previous survey in 2007 have been
met and especially in Poland the employees are morecontent than beore. These positive results are con-
nected to ollowing issues: employees own work,responsibilities and arrangements o work, work-load and clear goals. During the coming years the
whole corporation is going to concentrate on devel-
oping an appreciative, confdent and equitable work-ing environment.
Know-how is continuously being developed
The personal development discussion is an impor-
tant part o leadership and know-how development
in Nordkalk. The objective is to have personal

Enironmental matters are taken into consideration alread
in the planning o the production. Continuous eorts are
made to reduce noise, dust and ibration.
Nordkalk is actively working to minimize the impactso its operations on the surrounding environment as
well as on the employees working environment. Lime-stone is extracted rom quarries or underground mines.The stone is then transported or preliminary crushingand sorting and urther on or processing. The opera-tions cause vibrations, noise and dust and the quarrychanges the landscape. Other inconveniences are sur-plus stone in connection with the extraction and sec-ondary products rom the production processes. Waterruns down into the mines and can have an impact ongroundwater levels in the surrounding environment.
Limestone products include crushed, ground orsieved limestone, i.e. calcium carbonate (CaCO
3).
Limestone grinding is usually a dry process, whichcauses dust at the grinding plants and this is the maininconvenience or the environment. The dust caneectively be controlled by fltering the out-coming
air. By watering roads and stored stone material thedust can be reduced around the quarries.
Nordkalk processes calcite and wollastonite in Lap-peenranta. The subsidiary Suomen Karbonaatti Oy
processes the concentrated calcite into paper pig-
ment. The otation process mainly takes place in a
confned space.
Continuous enironmental workon the production plants
In 2010 many investments were made to reduce noise
and dust on the production plants. In Poland the noiseisolation on the sorting equipment in Miedzianka
has been improved and the test results show thatthe noise level has been lowered. In Miedzianka a
mobile washing unit or car wheels was taken into use.
In Storugns on Gotland the exceptionally dry sum-
mer and all caused problems with dust rom theflter dust dumps. The neighbors have complained,
and the authorities have noticed this inconvenience.
The situation with flter dust will be improved this
year; the primary goal is to increase utilization o
the flter dust. As the modernization o the plant pro-ceeds, also diuse dusting will decrease.
In Lule the personnel has been working to fndusage areas or the flter dust which builds up inall lime kilns.
In Raahe there was a problem with dust emissionsrom the kilns. Filters will be repaired and renewed
during 2011.
Making the most o the resources
In addition to extracting the proper useul stone, alsosurplus stone is extracted. It can be used as mac-adam. The amount o surplus stone extracted has todo with geological actors and extraction plans. Theobjective is to urther increase the useulness o thesurplus stone and to extract in an environmentally
riendly way. In Nordkalk Group the utilization o
quarried stone was 88 percent in 2010. All mines aremaking a plan or how to manage and store surplus
stone according to the regulation on management owaste rom extractive industries.
In Pargas, new methods or using grayish lime-stone instead o white limestone have been devel-
oped together with customers. The availability othe whitest limestone is limited, which means that
the using o grey limestone makes it easier to utilizethe dierent limestone qualities o the quarry. The
stone storage area has been expanded, which makesit easier to separate the dierent stone ractions.
Enironmental products
Nordkalks products are also used or environmentalcare. By means o various limestone-based applica-
tions it is possible to prevent and deal with environ-mental problems. Soil improvement is about limingthe felds in order to reduce the acidity o the soil,
which also decreases need or ertilizers.
Lime products play an important role in water

treatment. Limestone products, as well as quick-lime and slaked lime, are used to puriy drinking
water and clean waste water. Liming o watercoursesreturns the quality o the water to a level preceding
the acidifcation. Nordkalk is strongly taking steps
to develop products and methods to reduce diuse
watercourse loading. In Sweden a state subsidy is
granted or cutting phosphorous emissions romfelds into watercourses. This opens new possibili-
ties or Nordkalks limestone-based Fostop concept.
The ue gases o power plants can be efcientlyneutralized with the help o quicklime, slaked lime
or limestone powder. Also the waste incinerationemissions can be reduced with the help o dierentlimestone-based products.
Nordkalk extracts limestone at 21 locations and processes it into crushed and ground
limestone, concentrated calcite, and quick and slaked lime. Nordkalks range of products
also includes dolomite and wollastonite.
Limestone is extracted rom the bedrock in either quarries or underground mines. The
stone is then transported or rough handling and sorting, ater which it goes on to be
processed urther elsewhere. Carbonate or limestone products, i.e. calcium carbonate
(CaCO3), consist o crushed, ground or sieved limestone.
Quicklime is produced by heating crushed and sorted limestone to a temperature o
some 1,100 C in either a rotary or shat kiln. Quicklime (CaO) is grainy or foury in
appearance. It is sited into dierent ractions or ground to a ne four. Slaked lime
is made by adding water to quicklime. The calcium dioxide reacts with the water to
produce calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH)2), slaked lime, which is a dry, powder-like four,
light in colour.

Nordkalk is using various types o energy in the manu-acturing o its products and continuous work is done toimprove the energy efciency at all production plants.This is also an important aspect when planning new
investments, and existing production processes areoptimized in order to cut down the specifc energyconsumption.
When it comes to lime burning, coal, oil and natural
gas have traditionally been used, but now an inten-
sive work is being done to fnd alternative orms o
energy. Electricity is used or crushing and grinding,uel oil and liquid petroleum gas or the drying pro-
cess. Nordkalk emphasizes research and developmento new and environmentally riendly technologies.
The work on improving process efciency andreducing the operations impact on the environ-ment continues. In Finland Nordkalk has already
or many years been associated with the energyefciency agreement or industries, whose objec-
tive is to introduce new energy efcient technology
and increase the use o renewable energy sources.
Man etensie proects in 2010
In Finland a development project continues in order
to implement bio uels at the lime kiln in Pargas,which also means development o the burning pro-
cess in the kiln. The project received unding rom
Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency or Technologyand Innovation).
The grinding plant in Vampula has received a new
burner, which also makes it possible to use biogas.
The test period started in December 2010 and the
burner was taken into ull-scale use at the begin-ning o 2011. The gas is delivered through a 1.5 kmpipeline rom Vambio, a biogas producer nearby.There the gas is produced o by-products rom the
ood industry, slaughter houses, livestock produc-tion and o wastewater sludge.
The lime kiln in Kping in Sweden has already or
many years been running on alternative uels in
addition to traditional ones. In 2010 storage acilitiesand equipment were improved in order to increase
the use o alternative uels. In autumn Nordkalk meta preliminary agreement on delivery o biogas withthe Swedish company Cortus, which is planningto build a pilot scale gasifcation plant in Kping.
The gasifcation process makes it possible to refne
problematic and low-quality biouels to high-qual-
ity, CO2
neutral uel gas, which is suitable or lime
burning. During the coming three years the processwill be fne-tuned, dierent uel combinations will
be tested and the cost-eectiveness will be assessed.
The whole Nordkalk saes energ
A great deal o the energy saving at Nordkalk is donevia better equipment, improved process control andnew routines at the plants. The personnel is trained
to take energy efciency into consideration in the
daily routines and beside the big investments small
improvements are continuously done at the plants.
In Kping a new control system or the lime kiln
has been taken into use, which has led to remarkableenergy savings.
In Tytyri tests to run the lime kilns with converted oil
continued during the year. The compressor station wasrenewed in the end o 2009, which had a considerablepositive impact on the energy consumption in 2010.
The Parfll plant in Pargas has improved the pneu-matic conveyor, which transports products directlyto the customer. This makes it easier to optimize the
energy consumption.
During several years the quarry personnel has system-atically been trained to drive the quarry machines as
economically as possible, which decreases the impacton the environment.
Less emissions and more reccling
Nordkalk is actively participating in the research on
reduction o carbon dioxide emissions, capture and
permanent storage o CO2.

Regarding lime burning, about two thirds o the emis-sions are process discharges rom the raw material, i.e.limestone when it is being refned into quicklime. Therest o the emissions are due to the use o ossil uels.
Carbon dioxide capture means that the CO2
is sepa-
rated, or instance, rom a plants ue gases. The sep-arated carbon dioxide is stored in such a way that it
wont escape into the atmosphere. This can be done,
or example, in porous geological ormations. CO2
canalso be used in dierent products, or example whenmaking paper pigment (PCC) the CO
2released dur-
ing burning is re-entered into the permanent product.
The waste heat o the lime kilns is utilized in the dis-
trict heating network in the Finnish towns o Lappeen-ranta, Lohja and Pargas. In 2010, the amount o heat
delivered by Nordkalk was equivalent to an amountneeded or heating and providing warm water to about2300 households.

Nordkalks production process releases particles(dust) into the air, and fue gases rom the process
contain oxides o nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide
(CO2) and varying amounts of sulphur dioxide (SO
2).
The fgures show the most essential emissions inrelation to quarried limestone. They are based on
measurements and calculations for Nordkalks plants
in the whole Group. The increase of particle emissions
results rom lter disturbances at one Finnish lime
plant. The situation is corrected by changing orrepairing lters.

In Pargas (Finland) new methods were taken into use in order to usegray limestone instead o white limestone. Expanded raw materialstorage areas also make it easier to homogenize the raw material.
The test run with converted oil in the lime kilns in Tytyri (Finland)continued. The compressor station was modernized at the end o 2009,and it resulted in considerable energy savings in 2010.
The grinding plant in Vampula (Finland) has received a new burneror biogas.
In Kping (Sweden) storage acilities and equipment have beenimproved in order to increase the use o alternative uels. Here agasifcation plant or biogas is planned to be built. A new controlsystem or the lime kiln was taken into use to keep the rotary kilnuel consumption down.
At all locations the employees are taught to operate mine machin-ery as economically as possible. This saves uel and reduces envi-ronmental load.
In Finland a development project continues in order to introduce theuse o bio uels in the Pargas lime kiln.
In the Parfll actory in Pargas the pneumatic conveyor which trans-ports products directly to the customer was improved in order tourther optimize the energy consumption and thereor car transportsare not needed.
New energy saving technology has been implemented in the limekiln in Lule.
Enhanced sound isolation on the plants in Miedzianka (Poland),Landskrona (Sweden) and Sipoo (Finland).
A project or ollow-up observations o diuse dusting was startedin Pargas in cooperation with the additional industry and with theauthorities o the city.
Watering o otation sand basins in Lappeenranta (Finland)
New dust flters in Tytyri (Finland) and Rakke (Estonia).
Asphalting o roads and places o loading in Tytyri (Finland) andKarinu (Estonia).

AFTER-CARE OF qUARRIES
All Nordkalk quarries must have an ater-care plan.
Exhausted mines are used or new purposes.
The operations are integrated into the community.
Restoration o one disposal area in Pargas (Finland) is completed.
The fnal restoration plans o the old Ignaberga site (Sweden) are estab-lished by the authorities. The fnal goal is to create bird ponds and natu-ral vegetation in the surroundings.

Juha Pykl, researcher at the Environmental Centre
of Finland, has studied biodiversity near Nordkalks
quarries.
Nordkalks Mine Closure Policy defnes how to carryout ater-care. For each mine a plan is drawn up andit pays regard to the characteristics o the mine and
the environment. The aim o these plans is to bet-
ter take the needs o the community in considera-
tion in the uture. The liespan o a mine is tens o
years and the plan is updated according to how the
extraction is advancing and how the area is chang-
ing. The initial point o ater-care is to guarantee thesaety at the quarry area, or example, with a ence.Oten parts o the steepest sides are evened and thequarry is enhanced to positively contribute to thesurrounding landscape.
The mine is part o the communit
The characteristics that a mine or quarry oers caneven be utilized in many other ways. In the under-
ground mine in Tytyri, Finland, there is a museum,
exhibition hall and estival hall in the parts that are nolonger in mining use. Some o the empty mine shats
in Tytyri are used or fnal storage o power plant ash.A lit manuacturer is using the abandoned shat ortesting lits. At Storugns on Gotland a motorsports
track has been built in a ceased quarry, and closeby, land is appointed to a wind power plant. In the
mining areas concerts have been kept and the spec-tacular landscape in the operating mine in Pargashas been eternalized on pictures and advert flms,
as well as in movies. Economically it is possible to
use the lime-rich soil, or example, or true culti-vation as they do on Gotland.

Ater-care o parts that are no longer in use at the
Ignaberga quarry in Southern Sweden is taking place
while extraction is continued in other parts o thequarry. Some o the steepest sides have been evenedout, stone heaps removed, and areas still with steepsides protected by a ence. The work is carried out
in good understanding with the authorities. Green
areas have ormed on the area in the course o many
years, and this has been taken into consideration in theater-care work. Decreasing the amount o pumpedwater is being planned in order to create bird pondsor the rich birdlie o the area. The Ignaberga quarry
is connected to a water protection area which is thesource o the countys drinking water. In the uture,the landscaped areas can serve as a nature attractionand hiking area.
In cooperation with the University o Tartu an ater-care plan is made up or the Kamariku quarry near
Rakke, Estonia. The cooperation has continued or
many years and similar plans have been made or
the quarries in Kurevere and Vasalemma. One oNordkalks objectives is to increase the utilization
o soil that has been removed because o quarry-ing. The objective is to separate soil material (e.g.
humus and clay) that can be used, or example, orater-care and to separately deposit this material oruture use. Also in Karinu quarry in Estonia an ater-care project is carried out while quarrying contin-
ues in other parts.
The ater-care o the old disposal area o the Par-gas mine in Skrbble was completed in 2010. Theplan was already drawn up in 2005 in compliance
with authority requirements. The plan, as well as
the completed work, included utilization o clean
material rom the citys feld works and extraction
o moraine and mould in the mine to orm the dis-
posal site. The surace was covered with harmless
compost material rom an industry nearby in order toimprove vegetation and to create an attractive greenarea or the uture.
2010 was the year o Biodiersit
The UN designated 2010 as the International Year
o Biodiversity. The theme is still current as EU didnot reach the objectives set to stop impoverishmento biodiversity. It is necessary to improve the under-
standing o undamental socio-economic aspects toreach the objectives set or 2020.
In limestone-rich mining environments you can fnd
several rare plants and living organisms and a fn-
ished quarry provides an excellent environment orplants thriving in lime-rich soil. Biodiversity is prev-alent in lime-rich environments and always superior
in comparison to nearby lime-poor environments. Asurvey o dierent groups revealed that you can fnd

the largest number o various species in Finland in
the lime-rich areas o Vstboland. Esivere in Esto-nia is another example o the act that plants thrive
in the lime-rich soil o quarries. In order to save theorchids growing in Esivere, Nordkalk has protected
some areas in the vicinity to the mine.
The Environmental Centre o Finland carried out a
survey on moss and lichen at the open pits o Tytyriand Mustio in Lohja and at the mine area in Pargas
in 2009. The survey revealed several rare and to someextent endangered species. The project continuedduring 2010 and the examined areas expanded to
include Vimpeli, Vampula and Sipoo. The Environ-mental Centre is planning to make a record o the
species living in Nordkalks mines and inventories
are planned in Lappeenranta and Kolari. The lime-
stone mines contribute considerable aspects or pre-serving the biodiversity and can oer guided natureexperiences or tourists when quarrying operations
are fnished.
Ater-care o parts that are no longer in use in the

place simultaneously with the extraction in otherparts o the quarry. Bird ponds are ormed on the
bottom o the quarry.

ensuReDThere is an obious need to fnd a unctional balance between
the protection o nature and the eploitation o natural resources,
which are essential or maintaining our current standard o liing.
Access to land must be guaranteed
Nordkalk has actively participated in the communica-tion o the European Unions Raw Material Initiativeo 2008. The background is the rising awareness o
the need to secure mineral-based raw materials in thegrowing global competition. The essential content o
the Initiative is ocused on the issue o access to land,which means that identifed raw material sources mustbe made accessible or exploitation by the means o
unctional mining regulations and a land use planning
which balances dierent land use interests.
EU is not aiming or a mining directive or any other
binding, harmonised mining legislation. This is con-sidered to be the competence o the member states,
due to the sovereignity in land control issues.
Based on the EUs Raw Material Initiative, a mineral
strategy has been ormulated in Finland. It defnesthe common policy regarding mineral resources and
supply o raw material taking environmental issues
in consideration. In Finland the new mining law wasapproved by the Parliament in the spring o 2011. Thenew law includes certain new ees and responsibili-
ties or the mining companies but it is not expected
to have a considerable eect on Nordkalks opera-tions, partly because some elements in the new law
are well known rom the existing environmental leg-islation. Drat o a national mineral strategy is being
planned also in Sweden.
It is possible to combine the interests of
industr and nature
A new EU Guidance on Non-energy mineral extrac-tion and Natura 2000 was published in June 2010.
Natura 2000 areas are sometimes overlapping with
mineral exploitation interests. In northern Gotland
there are a number o Natura 2000 areas adjacentto Nordkalks quarries. The new guidance statesthat there is no automatic exclusion o non-energy
activities in or near Natura 2000 areas. It also recog-nises that some extraction projects can be benefcial
to biodiversity because ora and auna enjoy lime-
rich soils. There is an obvious need to fnd a unc-
tional balance and ratio between nature protection
and the exploitation o the natural resources which
are so essential in maintaining the standard o living.
The continued work on the raw materials initiative hasbeen based on two main topics which were reported
during 2010. They are sharing best practice experi-ences in the area o access to land, within the mem-ber states in the EU and identiying the critical and
important mineral-based raw materials. Limestone islisted among the important ones especially concern-ing the white calcite used in carbonate-based paper
pigments. Access to raw material may be consideredcritical in a regional context as well. This is the case
o the Gotland limestone which is an irreplaceable
raw material or the Nordic steel industry.
Emission rights ital or the lime business
The lime industry has participated in the prepara-
tion o the EU ETS (emission trading scheme) or
the third phase 2013-2020. The European Parlia-ment is going to take a stand on this revised direc-
tive during 2011. Based on the proposed directive,
the lime industry will be granted ree emission rightsaccording to a benchmark value o 0.954 emission
rights per produced ton o quicklime. This is a cru-
cial question or the lime producers, as the industry
has brought up on dierent orums.
Lime production is given only one ratio, whichmeans that the conditions or burning limestone in
a shat kiln are dierent than in a rotary kiln. This
emphasizes the importance o cutting emissions rom
rotary kilns and increasing the use o non-ossil uels.

REACH registration accomplished
The new European Chemicals Regulation, REACH,
or registration, evaluation, authorisation and restric-tion o chemicals became eective on 1 June 2007.
Nordkalk Groups products quicklime (CaO), slakedlime (Ca(OH)
2) and dolime (CaMgO
2) were regis-
tered according to the REACH regulation.
Chemically unmodifed minerals, which occur innature, are exempted rom registration. Consequently
Nordkalks products limestone, aggregates, calciumcarbonate and wollastonite all under this exemptionand were not registered. REACH aims at improvingthe protection o human health and the environmentand maintaining the competitiveness o the EUschemical industries.
