Gravure@RIT 2010 Update

Abstract

Professor Robert Chung was appointed as the Gravure Research Professorship in 2004. Over the past six years, he has built a curriculum that attracts undergraduate as well as graduate students to study gravure printing process in relation to color management and printing process control. In his 2010 Gravure Day presentation, he will reflect his view of the industry transformation in terms of changes and opportunities. This includes the research projects in reproducing marbles and wood patterns using n-channel ICC profiles, color agreement between packaging printing and proofing, and printing process audits and certification services.

Predicting the Future of Printing

Abstract

Yogi Berra said that it’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future. With that in mind, John Seymour will present some predictions of the present from the vantage point of a guy who develops press control systems. Intermingled with this will be a bit of information about how new products are developed, why they are bought, and why applied mathematicians should be invited to parties.

Gravure Cylinder Specifications

Abstract

Electro-Mechanical Engraving is most popular for cylinder preparation in the Gravure industry. Explanation of electro-mechanical engraved cell specifications were composted by five elements, line screen, angle, stylus, wall, and channel. The importance and relationship of any element will affect the engraved cell configurations. By using mathematical equations to calculate cylinder-engraving time, engraved cell volume and line screen ruling. Different ink and substrate will require specific engraved cell specifications for printability. Study the relationship of engraved cell size and dot percentage and ink transfer from cell to substrate.

Biograph

Elie Khoury received a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in 1984 and 1992 respectively. In 1992 he founded Le Pixel with Luc Regnault for the development of print quality enhancement software, which went on to achieve international success. In 1996 Elie began working on ICC and ColorSync™ based color management as a consultant to Apple Europe. In 1997 he founded Alwan Color Expertise which became a driving force in color management and standardization services and software. In 1998 Elie began his involvement with ISO standards and was among the first print experts to implement ISO 12647 and PSO in global Publishing and Printing groups. In 2006 he was nominated chair of the French TC 130 committee, Elie sits regularly on ISO TC 130 and ECI meetings. In 2007 Elie founded KEE Consultants, an international network of ISO and PSO experts and consultants whose objectives are to promote, contribute to the development and to the implementation of the Graphic Arts Industry Standards.

Implementing ISO 12647 standards

Abstract

ISO 12647 standards and their implementation in print production workflows are gaining importance and adoption worldwide. However, some limitations and lack of clarity in the way these standards should be implemented are affecting their adoption as well as the necessary benefits they bring to the industry. Elie Khoury’s presentation will cover possible ways to overcome these limitations and will also introduce Alwan’s PDF and PRINT standardization solutions that are widely used in PSO certified companies in Europe, and that may also help PSA implementation and adoption in the USA.

Note:

Abstract

Flexible Packaging presents daunting challenges for any printing technology. First, intense competition for consumer attention on the store shelf drives the use of saturated colors and difficult to print design elements in packaging. Next, the technology used to print these designs must be compatible with a huge range of substrates which are optimized for product protection as opposed to printability. Finally, the emergence of big box retailers has created a relentless drive to reduce the cost of packaging.Over the years, gravure and flexographic printing have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to meet these challenges with technology breakthroughs that cut time to market, improved packaging quality, and cut the cost of packaging. Unfortunately, the most recent breakthrough, extended gamut printing, has so far been the exclusive preserve of flexographic printing. Today, gravure is losing market share in packaging and will need to rise to this new challenge if it is to retain its historical position as a major package printing technology. This presentation explores the impact of extend gamut packaging printing and how printers adopting this technology are able to offer “faster, better, cheaper” packaging to their customers. It then discusses the obstacles to implementing extended gamut printing in gravure, and the opportunities that new gravure technologies offer to overcome these limitations.
