Dale StarrHead Coach

Dale Starr enters his first season as the head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s volleyball team. Starr brings a vast background in col-legiate coaching to Robert Morris, having served as the head coach at McNeese State University for six years (2004-2010) and the head coach at Division II Mississippi University for Women (1999-2002). He also has experience working as an assis-tant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin (1998-1999; 2003-2004) and Boise State University (2002-2003). While at McNeese State, Starr recorded an overall record of 96-81 and a league record of 57-43 in the Southland Conference. In 2006, he guided his team to a Southland Conference East Division Championship. During his tenure, he coached five teams to conference tournaments, with three of them making semi-final appearances. He coached eight All-SLC players, six All-Louisiana players, the 2004 Louisiana Player of the Year, the 2009 Louisiana Freshman of the Year and the 2004 SLC Newcomer of the Year. He also coached the program’s first ever AVCA Sports Imports National Player of

the Week in 2004. His teams also performed strongly on the academic spectrum with 19 players earning All-Southland Conference Academic honors. Additionally, his team was honored with a player on the Academic All-American Second Team in 2006, a first for the program. Prior to his appointment with McNeese State, Starr spent a season with the two-time defending Ohio Valley Conference

Champions, the University of Tennessee at Martin, and a season as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for Boise State. He captured his first head coaching experience at the Mississippi University for Women, where he coached three First Team Academic All-Americans and six All-Gulf South Conference players. He led his team to a third-place finish in the GSC West Division and a berth in the GSC Tournament for the first time since 1996. He finished with an overall record of 50-47 in three seasons. Starr began his career at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1998 and was the only assistant for a team that set school records for wins in a season (15) and conference wins in a season (8). Before beginning his collegiate coaching career, Starr worked as a head coach at Eagle Valley High School, Highland High School and Colorado Extreme Volleyball Club and also worked as a volunteer assistant for his alma mater, the University of Northern Colorado. Starr obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1995. He and his wife have two daughters.

SaRah kacZukAssistant Coach

Sarah Kaczuk enters her first season as the assistant coach of the Robert Morris University volleyball team. Kaczuk brings both a collegiate playing background and noteworthy coaching experience to the Colonials. She began her collegiate volleyball career at Ashland University, playing for the Eagles during the 2005 season. After transferring to Kent State, she played for the Golden Flashes in 2007 and 2008, helping KSU finish 35-28 over those two seasons. Kaczuk played in 21 matches and finished fourth on her team with 1.66 digs/game in 2008. She graduated from Kent State in December 2008 with a degree in business management. Kaczuk, a native of Solon, Ohio, began her coaching career in 2006, assisting with teams from Renaissance Volleyball Club in Cleveland, Ohio, and Summit Volleyball Club in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. For the past two years, she has served as a head coach of numerous youth teams within these clubs. Kaczuk also was as an assistant coach with the United States Air Force Adult Women’s Volleyball Team that won the gold medal in the All-Armed Forces Games in May 2010.

tyleR WaRdenStudent Assistant

Tyler Warden enters his fourth season as a volleyball student assistant for Robert Morris University. He graduated from Norwin High School where he was a three-year letterwinner in volleyball. While at Norwin, Warden garnered both all-section honors and All-WPIAL accolades in 2006 and 2007 and was named to the Finest-40 All-State team in 2007. Warden helped lead Norwin to four sectional titles and a 24-2 overall record in 2005, including a 19-1 section mark. In addition to competing in volleyball, Warden also participated in club baseball at Norwin. Warden is entering his senior year at Robert Morris and is pursuing a degree in sport management.

2010 outlook

The Robert Morris University volleyball team struggled to find its footing in the early portion of its 2009 schedule as a series of losses eventually resulted in the program’s first losing season in over a decade. However, the Colonials showed strong resolve and determination by righting the ship and closing the regular season with wins in 11 of their final 17 matches. This turnaround ensured that RMU would qualify for the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament for the 11th consecutive season, the longest active streak in the conference. The Colonials will look to carry over their encouraging finish into the 2010 season under first-year head coach Dale Starr. Though it is a necessary starting point, Starr has greater goals in mind for RMU than qualifying for its 12th straight conference tournament. “I took this job in large part because of the potential to win NEC championships,” Starr said. “There is a rich tradition for volleyball at RMU, and the potential to rebuild a dynasty like the one they experienced from the late 1990s through 2003 was very attractive to me.” In 2010, Starr hopes Robert Morris can add to its impressive display of volleyball hardware that includes seven NEC Tournament championships, six regular-season titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Though Starr is in his first season at RMU, there will definitely be a level of continuity and familiarity when Colonial fans enter the arena. Starr has a plethora of veterans returning that saw significant playing time in 2009 that he hopes can help the Colonials reach their goal of an NEC championship. Robert Morris brings back five starters and its primary libero from last season’s squad and counts five seniors on its roster.

outSide hitteR

Robert Morris returns two outside hitters who saw considerable time last season and will have two newcomers to work into the rotation as well. Senior Charla Drabant is the most experienced of the quartet with 78 matches and 253 sets played in her collegiate career, second on the team in both categories. She knocked

down 81 kills and recorded 101 digs last season and is the only player on the Colonial roster that has at least 500 kills and 500 digs in her collegiate career (574 kills, 508 digs). “Charla is healthy and looking to have a great senior season,” Starr said. “She is a vocal and emotional player, and I really like that.” Sophomore Lindsey Monger will look to complement Drabant and is one of three returning Colonials that played in every match in 2009. Monger made important contributions in her freshman season in which she was fourth on the team in kills (148) and fifth on the team in digs (117) while also tallying 39 blocks. “Lindsey got good experience last season, and I look for her to improve her game after a solid freshman year,” Starr said. “She has a big upside.” The addition of sophomore transfer Una Janpundza will add to the depth and experience of this group. Japundza will look to make the transition to outside hitter after primarily serving as a middle hitter with UNC-Asheville last season. Japundza saw time in eight matches with the 25-10 Bulldogs in 2009. “Una will give us experience and great size on the outside,” Starr said. “I feel she will really step up and compete for time on the floor even though this is a position she hasn’t played in awhile.” The other addition to the RMU lineup at outside hitter is freshman Stephanie McCarl. McCarl, a local product out of Darlington, Pa., brings an impressive high school resume to RMU. She was twice named all-state first team and copped numerous all-section and all-league awards in her career at Blackhawk High School.

“Stephanie has good size and should get better and better as the season goes on and she adjusts to the college game,” said Starr. Despite having two sophomores and one freshman at this position, Starr remains optimistic about the prospects of these four student-athletes. “I am really excited about this group of hitters,” Starr said. “Although we are a bit young at this position, I feel it will become a strength for us. I am looking for big things from this group as it is very important in the new offensive schemes

we will be running in 2010.”

middle hitteR

The Colonials return three talented and highly-experienced players at middle hitter, making it the deepest position on the roster. Senior Amanda Graham highlights the list of returnees for RMU. Graham earned All-NEC recognition for the third consecutive year in 2009, collecting first team honors for the second time. She led the team in hitting percentage (.332) and blocks (1.14 per game), ranking second and fourth, respectively, in the NEC. Graham also led Robert Morris in kills per game (2.63) and aces per game (.31) in 2009 and enters 2010 in second place among Colonials all-time in both hitting percentage (.332) and block assists (233). “Amanda had a great junior year, being named All-NEC First Team, and will obviously be looked upon for leadership,” said Starr. After posting strong numbers in her sophomore season, including earning a NEC Player of the Week award, junior Hannah Veith will serve as another very reliable option at middle hitter for the Colonials. Veith, who played in 33 matches last season, finished just behind Graham and third in the NEC in hitting percentage at .324. She finished third on the team in kills (235) and second in blocks (95). Her 95 total blocks were the eighth highest total in single-season school history. “Hannah has a big ceiling and will be a big part of our future both in 2010 and as a senior in 2011,” said Starr.

Senior Jaye Hellmich rounds out the trio of returning middle hitters for RMU. Hellmich competed in 23 matches a season ago and finished third on the team in blocks per game (.70) and fourth on the team in both kills per game (1.47) and hitting percentage (.268). Hellmich enters her senior season with 271 career kills and 124 career blocks. “Jaye had a solid spring and will look to break out in her senior year,” said Starr. Japundza will also serve as depth at middle hitter after competing at that position in 2009. Starr definitely believes that middle hitter will be a position of strength for Robert Morris in 2010. “This group is going to be our core,” Starr said. “We will be depending on this group both offensively and defensively. We are going to need this group to produce, and with the offensive scheme we will be running, they will be a big, important part of our success.”

oppoSite hitteR

RMU will return two players at the opposite hitter position in 2010. Sophomore Amanda Craig will look to build on an impressive freshman campaign in which she was named to the NEC All-Tournament Team and was also recognized with NEC Rookie of the Week honors after her first weekend of collegiate play. Craig posted strong numbers across the board, leading the team in kills with 253, while finishing third on the team in both aces (27) and digs (244). She also compiled 66 blocks and had four double-doubles, in which she recorded at least 10 kills and 10 digs in the same match. “Amanda had a great freshman year and will look to build upon that success and experience,” said Starr. Senior Addie Jennings provides Starr with another option at the opposite position. She appeared in 20 matches last season, totaling 15 kills and three blocks. Jennings could also see time at the outside hitter position in 2010. “Addie will provide much needed depth to both the opposite and outside hitter positions, and with her size, she should help with our blocking scheme,” said Starr. Starr is glad that he has two opposite hitters coming back in 2010. “With two experienced players at the opposite position, we are in good shape,” Starr said. “I look for this position to be solid for us on both offense and defense. This will be key to

maintaining balance in our offense and shutting down opposing team’s outside hitters.”

SetteR

Freshman Alex Deines will likely take over the starting setter role for RMU in 2010. Deines, a native of Centennial, Colo., competed for Littleton High School in the highly-competitive Continental Conference for four years. She earned All-Continental honors in her senior season while finishing fifth in state of Colorado in assists and 12th in the state in digs. Deines also participated in the 2010 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships this past summer with her club team, Colorado Performance Volleyball Club. “I am really excited about Alex being our new setter,” Starr said. “She comes from a great club background and competed in the toughest league in the state of Colorado on her high school team. She has experience running the same basic things that we will run, so she will be ahead of the curve as far as learning the offense. She has a great attitude and a high volleyball IQ. I feel she will do a great job running our offense.” Sophomore Andrea Catucci will serve as Deines’ backup at the setter position.

libeRo / deFenSiVe SpecialiSt

The only returning player to appear in every game last season, senior Corinne Moser returns after a breakout junior season. Moser posted a team-leading 410 digs and her per game average of 3.39 digs per game ranked seventh in the NEC. She posted double-digit

dig totals in 22 matches and had two separate stretches of seven consecutive matches with double-figure digs. Moser also contributed 48 assists and 10 service aces. Catucci will look to earn playing time at both the libero and defensive specialist positions in 2010. She competed in 28 matches in her rookie year and accumulated 49 digs and 12 assists. Despite these players’ defensive assignment, Starr also considers them an important part of the offense he will employ. “This group will be vital in solidifying our ball control in order to run the up-tempo offense that we plan on running,” Starr said. “Everything we do will be started with our ball control, so this is a vital position for us. I look for this group to raise its level of play in order for us to improve all of our defensive and offensive numbers from 2009.” This Colonial squad will be tested with a schedule that features a large majority of matches on the road, as RMU will play 21 of its 33 matches away from its campus. Robert Morris opens the season by co-hosting the Duequesne / Robert Morris Invitational, where it will play four matches over two days, August 27-28. The Colonials will then commence with a 13-match road trip, the longest road trip for the program since 2001, which will last for the duration of September. The trip includes matches with preseason No. 8 Washington, Big Ten foe Indiana and the first of two scheduled matches at crosstown rival Pittsburgh. RMU opens its second season of double round-robin play in the NEC during the last weekend of September, beginning with a Sept. 25 trip to Long Island, the defending NEC champions. Robert Morris will finally return home and open its NEC home schedule Saturday, Oct. 2, when it hosts Bryant. The Colonials hope that their tough schedule will continue deep into November. Starr believes that his 2010 team is capable of producing such a run and expects big things from his veteran squad that closed strongly last season. “I am extremely excited for this season,” Starr said. “I am expecting great things from this group, and the seniors have been great in accepting a new philosophy and getting everyone on board with what we are trying to do. I can’t wait to see what the season will hold for us, and hopefully we will be celebrating an NEC Championship in November. That is our goal and one we will work tirelessly to achieve.”

Fairleigh Dickinson won the first three Northeast Conference titles (1987-89) before the sport took a two-year hiatus from league competition. Robert Morris claimed the 1992 and 1993 titles when volleyball returned, but Rider ended the Colonials’ dominance with its “three-peat.” Saint Francis (Pa.) won the first regular-season title in the post-Rider era with a perfect 10-0 mark in 1997, while Wagner won the tournament title. UMBC, in its first year in the NEC, capped off a perfect regular season by capturing the 1998 NEC title and earned the NEC’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After failing to qualify for the tournament in 1998, Robert Morris captured its third NEC championship in 1999, and then went on an amazing run by winning five straight league titles before Long Island halted the streak in 2004 with its first tourney crown. For the next three years, Long Island added three more NEC titles to its collection. In 2008, the Colonials returned to the top of the league by earning an 8-0 NEC record and winning the NEC Regular-Season Championship, but RMU was not able to succeed in the NEC Tournament and Long Island captured its fifth NEC Tournament Title and fifth bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials own an overall record of 111-32 against NEC foes since 1994 when the conference began to have a regular-season champion, including a 82-13 mark over the last 10 years. Since 1992, Robert Morris is 30-14 in NEC Tournament action.

GreGory G. Dell’omo, Ph.D.President of Robert Morris University

Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. Taking the reins of the university during a period of unparalleled growth, Dell’Omo quickly developed a clear vision for RMU as a place that provides transformational experiences for students through engaged learning. He assembled a committee of faculty, staff, students and trustees, and charged them with turning his vision into a roadmap for the future. By the end of Dell’Omo’s second year, the university had unveiled a refined mission statement, six core values, and a comprehensive five-year strategic plan to guide RMU into the year 2012. In addition, a new 10-year campus master plan was set in motion to guide RMU’s evolution to a more residential campus with a strong living-learning environment. Dell’Omo’s tenure has been marked by a greater emphasis on internationalism in student experiences, faculty research and exchanges, and academic programs and partnerships, to better prepare students for success in today’s global society. Key achievements include accreditation of the School of Business by AACSB International – The Association to Advance College Schools of Business; accreditation of the School of Education and Social Sciences by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council; creation of the Student Engagement Transcript; increases in the number of RMU students studying abroad and the number of international students studying at RMU, and the establishment of academic partnerships with schools in Chile, China, Germany, Nicaragua, Turkey and Israel. Dell’Omo also has committed to building the Institutional Advancement division by providing a greater focus on fundraising, alumni relations and brand building – all of which are key to supporting the university’s continued growth. In his first

four years, Dell’Omo has overseen the construction or renovation of numerous buildings, the addition of several degree programs, and the launch of a new alumni magazine, athletic logo and mascot. Known as a “people’s president,” Dell’Omo places a high level of importance on staying connected with the campus community. He has expanded the annual new student orientation and attends all freshman seminars to meet new students each fall. He holds regular Town Hall Meetings to keep faculty and staff updated on the latest university happenings, and sometimes sits in on new employee orientation sessions. At the forefront of RMU’s golden age of intercollegiate athletics is Craig Coleman, M.D., who enters his sixth academic year as Director of Athletics at Robert Morris in 2010-11. He was named to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Led by Coleman’s guidance, the RMU department of athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. In the summer of 2010, Coleman was instrumental in helping to attract the 2013 NCAA Men’s Division I Frozen Four to the city of Pittsburgh, which will be played at the CONSOL Energy Center, the new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). The 2013 NCAA Frozen Four will mark the first time in NCAA history a national championship in a major team sport will be decided in Pittsburgh. The winning bid for the NCAA Frozen Four in 2013 came on the heels of a 2010 spring season in which the Robert Morris men’s basketball team made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, becoming a household name after almost pulling off an upset of Big East foe Villanova in the first round. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball squad earned its third postseason bid in four years in 2010, making its inaugural appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The same month, the RMU men’s lacrosse program, in just its sixth year of existence, earned its first national ranking by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), peaking at No. 19. The success for Robert Morris in 2009-10 is just part of a period of unparalleled growth for the department of athletics under Coleman’s watch. In his first year as director of athletics in 2005-06, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on the ESPN  The  Magazine District II Academic All-America District II Team, the

most in school history. Coleman has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris athletics logo and mascot as well as the launching of the official website for RMU athletics at www.rmucolonials. Six head coaches have been hired by Coleman, including a pair of men’s basketball head coaches in Mike Rice and Andrew Toole. Also hired by Coleman are Midge McPhail (women’s rowing), Jeff Layman (men’s and women’s tennis), Olivia Netzler (field hockey) and Dale Starr (volleyball). All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 20 years. During that period, RMU has won four Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a record of 17-3 in league play to claim the NEC regular-season championship, followed by a perfect 3-0 record in the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and earn its first bid to the NCAA Tournament. From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh

School of Medicine. He served as the Medical Director of several impatient units, residential treatment facilities and partial hospital programs at UPMC. Coleman earned his medical degree from The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted just 19 victories in the previous three seasons. During his 20 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 491-433-4 (.531), including a record of 211-84-2 (.717) against NEC foes. In 2007, Coleman garnered his 400th career victory in game one of doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. In his first four years as head coach, Coleman guide the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships. In 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the  USA  Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom, as well. His players include 13 ESPN  The  Magazine District II Academic All-Americans, three NEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for softball and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. In 2009, Robert Morris achieved the highest cumulative team grade point average among all Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.610 grade point average. It marked the second time under Coleman’s watch Robert Morris finished in the top five, as in 2000 the Colonials finished second with a 3.409 team grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571).

The Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is not all about winning on the field, court or ice. Success in the classroom through aca-demics is as much a triumph as the athlet-ic competitions themselves. Robert Morris University is committed to the total devel-opment of its student-athletes. The 2009-10 academic year followed the trend set before it as 85 Colonials were named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, 43 to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and 113 to the NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. A total of 14 student-athletes from the RMU men’s ice hockey team were also named to the 2010 College Hockey America Academic Team. A pair of individuals were also named Student-Athlete of the Year by the NEC in their respective sports, as Amanda Graham garnered the honor in volleyball and Annie Dubovec was bestowed the ac-colade in softball. Additionally in 2009-10, Robert Morris had five student-athletes named to their respective ESPN  The  Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Joining Graham (vol-leyball) and Dubovec (softball) were Christy Baldesberger (women’s soccer), Mike Lovely (football) and Jaci Timko (soft-ball). In all, 15 of the University’s 23 squads fin-ished with team GPA’s of 3.0 or higher in the 2009-10 academic year, and nearly 65 percent of all RMU’s 550 student-ath-letes posted a 3.0 or high-er grade point average. During the 2009-10 academic year, RMU’s 23 intercollegiate programs combined to compile an overall GPA of 3.221, which ranked third in the NEC. The Colonial wom-en’s cross country, field hockey, football and soft-ball programs also boast-ed the highest Team GPA’s

in the league, with women’s cross country posting a 3.66 team GPA, while softball fin-ished with a team GPA of 3.63. RMU’s field hockey team finished with a team GPA of 3.53 during the 2009-10 academic year, while the football program tied with Sacred Heart for the highest team GPA in the NEC at 2.88. Since 1988, a total of 17 Robert Morris student-athletes have been named the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, including former Colonials Jeff Witmyer (2004-08) and Jim Baughman (1996-2000) of the RMU track and field team. Witmyer was a three-time selection, earning the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year after the 2007 indoor season and the honor for both indoor and outdoor track and field in 2008. Baughman was awarded the 1999 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for indoor track and field and was bestowed the honor again in 2000 for out-door track and field. The Robert Morris volleyball, football and softball programs have each had three student-athletes named the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year since 1988, which is tops among RMU’s 23 intercollegiate programs. Robert Morris has also placed 39 student-athletes on ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams since 1992, including 15 individuals that were hon-ored in consecutive years. Football has led the way with 11 student-athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine District

II Academic All-America Team, followed by softball with nine honorees and vol-leyball with six. CoSIDA’s District II cov-ers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. A pair of former student-athletes also garnered the honor of being named the NEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year in the first four years the award has been dis-tributed. Sponsored by the league’s fac-ulty athletic representatives, the award is bestowed annually upon the NEC male and female student-athlete who has ex-hausted his or her eligibility, graduated and has posted the highest cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the academic year. In July of 2009, senior Tara Maxwell of the women’s track and field team earned the honor after compiling a 3.99 grade point average as a manufacturing engi-neering major throughout her four years at Robert Morris. Maxwell was one of three NEC female student-athletes to earn the award in 2009, joining Kathleen Henry of the Sacred Heart cross country program and Erin Reifsteck of the Saint Francis (Pa.) field hockey team. Maxwell joined former Colonial volley-ball player Lisa Jaszka (2003-06) as a win-ner of the award, as Jaszka was honored in 2007 for owning a perfect 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major. The reason for RMU’s success in the

classroom is simple. Colonial student-athletes receive the very best support when it comes to their academic cur-riculum. Evening study halls are monitored by the depart-ment’s student services per-sonnel, and academic counsel-ing is available from both the athletic department and the University’s enrollment man-agement office. Graduation is the goal, and Robert Morris University strives to ensure its student-athletes achieve that objective.

From its fertile beginning as a men’s basketball junior college powerhouse to one of the most diverse programs in the tri-state area, intercollegiate athletics and success at Robert Morris University go hand-in-hand. Since moving to Division I with its men’s basketball program in 1976-77, Robert Morris has witnessed its intercollegiate athletics program grow to 23 sports, including the only men’s and women’s Division I ice hockey squads and Division I men’s lacrosse team in the Pittsburgh region. Over the last 34 years, the Colonials have claimed 32 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 37 league tournament titles among 23 sports. A total of 11 of RMU’s intercollegiate athletic programs have earned at least one NEC Tournament championship, with men’s basketball and volleyball leading the way with seven each. The RMU men’s basketball program has also claimed nine regular-season championships, while volleyball owns six, football five and softball four. The 2009-10 athletic campaign saw the Colonials continue to rank near the top of their respective conferences, as the men’s basketball team became the first program in the NEC to earn back-to-back NEC Tournament championships in 16 years with a thrilling 52-50 win at Quinnipiac. Robert Morris advanced to its seventh NCAA Tournament with the victory and became a household name after almost pulling off an upset of Big East foe Villanova

in Providence, R.I., before succumbing in overtime. The RMU women’s basketball program earned its third postseason bid in four years in 2010 by making its inaugural appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), while the Colonial men’s lacrosse program, in just its sixth year of existence, earned its first national ranking by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), peaking at No. 19. The Colonial men’s ice hockey program continued to carve out a name for itself in 2009-10, producing a two-game sweep of No. 1 ranked Miami (Ohio) in January of 2010, including a 3-1 victory over the RedHawks in the fourth annual Pittsburgh College Showcase at Mellon Arena. The exploits of the RMU intercollegiate athletic program in 2009-10 has continued a trend that Robert Morris has established since its move to Division I three and-a-half decades ago. In just the last 10 years alone, Robert Morris has claimed 15 NEC regular-season championships and 13 NEC Tournament titles. Included in that stretch are four NEC Tournament championships in volleyball (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), two in both men’s (2009, 2010) and women’s (2007, 2008) basketball and one each in men’s indoor track & field (2000), women’s indoor track & field (2000), men’s outdoor track & field (2000), men’s soccer (2005) and softball (2005). In addition, former Colonial Stephanie Kuhn of the women’s indoor track & field squad became the first student-athlete in school history to qualify for

the NCAA Championships when she qualified in the javelin in outdoor track & field as both a freshman (2004) and a senior (2007). The success RMU athletics has had in the recent years has followed the seasons before it, as the Robert Morris football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s  National  Football  Weekly  Gazette. The program moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s rowing team claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football finishing No. 1. Since 1982, Robert Morris has sent 18 teams to the NCAA Tournament. Men’s basketball has made an NEC record seven appearances, while volleyball owns five appearances. The Colonial men’s basketball program qualified for the NCAA

Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009 and 2010, while volleyball made five straight appearances from 1999 to 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several student-athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 National Football League (NFL) Draft as a running back. In 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. Fraley has played nine years in the NFL for the Eagles and the Cleveland Browns and will don his third jersey in 2010 after signing with the St. Louis Rams. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer (MLS) as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Shannon is one of 21 former Colonials that have played professional soccer after their career at Robert Morris, including Rhian Dodds (2003), who played for Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. In addition to former RMU student-athletes playing in the professional ranks, inaugural women’s ice hockey goaltender Brianne McLaughlin (2009), who finished her career as the NCAA all-time saves leader, earned a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of

experience in the National Football League (NFL), including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL alum in John Banaszak, who was promoted to assistant head coach in the spring of 2008. Banaszak was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Banaszak replaced former assistant head coach Dan Radakovich, who spent 48 years in the coaching

profession in both the college and NFL ranks, including 13 at Robert Morris, before retiring. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also served as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.
