Chrystal Chollet-Norton enters her 24th sea-son as head coach of the Rutgers Universitywomen’s gymnastics program. She was ele-vated to full-time status in July of 1999 after13 seasons as a part-time coach.

During her tenure at The State University ofNew Jersey, she has made significantprogress in moving Rutgers’ gymnastics pro-gram toward becoming a national power.

Since her first year as a Scarlet Knight men-tor, Chollet-Norton has consistently upgradedthe program and schedule, pitting her teamsagainst strong Division I opponents, includingPenn State, George Washington, Maryland,Alaska, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Tow-son and North Carolina, and is always lookingto challenge her squad against other elite

programs in an effort to showcase her program on a national stage.

Known for her wealth of expertise in gymnastics, Chollet-Norton was recentlyappointed the NCAA Northeast Regional Advisory Chair. She was responsiblefor collecting and finalizing the team selection for the 2009 NCAA NortheastRegional qualifier. This is her second time holding this position as she alsoserved from 2000-04. She is also on the EAGL Conference Committee as sec-retary for the Conference for the last five years.

In the classroom, Chollet-Norton’s student-athletes have seen unprecedentedsuccess. Last season, 12 gymnasts were named to the EAGL All-Academic team.

She has more than 200 wins at Rutgers and is poised to build on that stellarmark with a plethora of talent returning in 2010, following injury-plagued sea-sons in 2008 and 2009. Despite the setbacks, Chollet-Norton sees promise ina young core of gymnasts that already have proven their worth as freshmen, highlighted by Danae Johnson’s All-American honor last winter.

The 2007 team finished sixth in the highly-competitive East Atlantic GymnasticLeague (EAGL) Championships and qualified for the NCAA Regionals as well asthe USA Gymnastics (USAG) Championships.

Four members of her 2006 team earned First Team All-America honors at theUSAG National Championships- further proof that Chollet -Norton’s teams arerecognized on a national level and possess the talent needed to compete withthe very best in the sport.

The Scarlet Knights also enjoyed a standout season in 2005, as they werenamed USAG Collegiate National Champions. In addition to earning the champi-onship crown, Stephanie Zick and Beth Fittery received All-America honors andChollet-Norton was named the Coach of the Year. Rutgers was also one of sixteams to qualify for the 2005 NCAA Northeast Regionals in Durham, N.H.

As a testament to Chollet-Norton’s success in nurturing well-rounded student-athletes, Zick and Fittery were also the recipients of the Rutgers Athletic Direc-tor’s Award. The award is given to the student-athlete, who has accumulated agrade point average of 3.50 or higher; earned All-America honors nationally orregionally during the year of award consideration; and has demonstrated leader-ship and character or performed community service, during her time at Rutgers.

In 2004, Chollet-Norton coached fiveRU gymnasts to the Northeast Re-gional. It was also a big year for theRU mentor on an individual note, asshe notched her 200th career vic-tory and 150th at Rutgers on Jan.24 against James Madison.

In 2002, Chollet-Norton saw herprogram elevated into the nationalspotlight as Courtney Turner ad-vanced to the NCAA National Cham-pionships in the floor exercise aftertying for first at the Northeast Re-gionals at Penn State.

During the 1999 season, Chollet-Norton and the Scarlet Knights onceagain eclipsed many of the team andindividual scoring records. As theseason came to an end, the squadconsistently set new marks in everymeet, culminating in an unprece-dented 193.875 mark — good forsecond place — at the USA Gymnas-tics National Invitation Tournament, where they upset the number-two seed,Bowling Green. Another milestone in the history of the program came in 1998,when Chollet-Norton and her squad traveled to Pittsburgh to participate in theirfirst-ever NCAA Regional competition. Despite a seventh-place finish, it broughtRutgers well-deserved recognition from the gymnastics community.

From 1998-2000, Chollet-Norton was awarded the Rutgers Director’s Awardfor the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. In 1995, shewas instrumental in guiding Rutgers toward its affiliation with the EAGL.

Now an NCAA-affiliated league, the EAGL has become one of the premiere col-legiate women’s gymnastics leagues. In 1998, Rutgers served as the venue forthe league championship, one of the most successful championships to date, which set a league attendance record at the time.

Prior to being named full-time at Rutgers, Chollet-Norton was a health andphysical education teacher in the Bridgewater-Raritan school district for 26years. In addition, she has been rated as an International Brevet Gymnastics of-ficial since 1980. The Brevet rating qualifies her to judge international competi-tions; she again passed the Brevet Course in Indianapolis, Ind., in July, 2009.

During the summer of 1986, Chollet-Norton served as a gymnastics judge atthe United States Olympic Festival in Houston, Texas, and in 1987 she was ajudge at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. She again visited Indianapo-lis as a judge’s assistant for the 1991 World’s Gymnastics Championships, which was the preliminary for the 1992 Olympics. She also served as a Train-ing Site Coordinator at the gymnastics events for the 1996 Olympics Gamesin Atlanta, Ga., where she was responsible for coordinating and overseeingthe training schedules of all men’s and women’s participating teams. Sheplayed a major role in the daily operations of all training for the athletes dur-ing the months of July and August in the gymnastics venue. She has alsoserved as a judge’s assistant at the 1998 Goodwill Games, held at the Nas-sau Coliseum in Long Island, N.Y.

A 1973 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Chollet-Norton earned abachelor’s degree in health and physical education. While at East Stroudsburg, she was a four-year varsity letterwinner in gymnastics, competing on beam, floor, and vault. She received her Master’s Degree in Health Education fromTrenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) in 1975. Chollet-Nortonlater served as head coach of the school’s women’s gymnastics team from1979-1986, and coached the Lions to the Division III Nationals and AIAW III Re-gionals and Nationals. Prior to her stint with the Lions, she served as headcoach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School from 1973-79. During her 30-yearcareer, she has compiled a 260-246-1 record, including a 223-221-1 mark inher 23 seasons at Rutgers.

Chollet-Norton and her husband, James Norton, reside in Whitehouse Station, N.J.

The ingredients for a strong season are all in place as thegymnastics program embarks on a new year. The healthy re-turn of several top veterans who were sidelined with injurieslast season, coupled with the addition of a highly-touted classof newcomers gives the coaching staff excitement headinginto the season.

The senior trio of Laura Sevarino, Prishani Seebadri and AlyssaLewandowski will serve vital roles and look to lead a young, buttalented, program by example. A core group of 20 letterwin-ners return this season giving the Scarlet Knights depth ineach event and pushing each gymnast during competition.

“As a coaching staff, we are excited to open the new seasonand challenge our team to reach new heights this year,” saidhead coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton. “We return a lot of gym-nasts this year, including some veterans who were injured formost of last season. We are also anxious to see our talentednewcomers compete at the collegiate level. We believe theycan have success early on. If we stay healthy, we can have avery successful season.”

ALL-AROUND

Senior Laura Sevarino and sophomore Nicole Schwartz eachreturn with experience under their belts. Sevarino was theScarlet Knights’ top all-arounder before ending her season pre-maturely due to injury each of the last two seasons. Newcom-ers Nicole Romano, Jenna Zito, Emma-Rose Trentacosti andJayne Jeffreys could also perform in the all-around, which givesthe Scarlet Knights great depth.

“This season will see a strong class of all arounders for theteam,” said Chollet-Norton. “Laura has had a great pre-seasonand is looking good for the season. Nicole Schwartz stepped uplast season when Laura was injured. Several members of theincoming freshman class could also perform in the all-around.All these girls will help to make our line-up one of the strongestwe have had in several seasons.”

VAULT

The return of top vaulter Laura Sevarino, Alyssa Lewandowskiand Kiah Banfield will make this unit very strong. Danae John-son, Maddie Zwiebel and Nicole Schwartz add experience, whilefreshmen Jenna Zito, Nicole Romano, Emma-Rose Trentacostiand Jayne Jeffreys could also see time on the vault during theseason. Returning letterwinners Kerry Silverman and Stacy Ru-derman will also be another force in a strong line-up of vaulters.

The groupof newcomers will add depth to this year’s team to this event. We are also hoping to see the return of Prishani back in theline-up. She is recovering from a early season surgery and isdoing well getting her skills back. Her addition to the line-up willbe an added addition in the middle of season to take this eventto a possible team score of 49.”

20 GYMNAST ICS 2009 -10

The 2009 Rutgers gymnastics team persevered through injuries to its veteranall-around talents and saw its youth step in and contribute immediately and con-tinue to build the Scarlet Knights’ program.

Headlining the freshman class was Danae Johnson, who finished her stellarrookie season as a Scarlet Knight with a 9.650 in the floor exercise at the USAGymnastics Collegiate Nationals to earn First Team All-America honors.

The influx of young talent added to the core of experienced gymnasts in a seniorclass that included Kristy Behr, Jessica Haddaway, Alison Hartwig and LataraNorthcutt. Behr competed in every meet on the bars, while Haddaway was a reg-ular in the lineup on the beam. Hartwig competed on both the beam and thebars in nearly every meet. Northcutt was one of the Scarlet Knights’ top all-arounders before suffering an injury in the fifth meet of the season. She returnedto compete in the vault the rest of the season, while also participating in the floorexercise and on the beam towards the end of the campaign.

Northcutt was one offour Scarlet Knightshonored by the East At-lantic GymnasticsLeague at their annualbanquet. She joinedsophomore Erica Ger-lach and freshmenNicole Schwartz andJohnson on the All-EAGL team. Northcuttearned Second Teamhonors on the beam, while Gerlach was rec-ognized for her achieve-ments on the bars andJohnson and Schwartzwere honored for theirperformance in thefloor exercise.

While their perform-ance in the gymreached new heights, the Scarlet Knights con-tinued their standout effort in the classroom with 14 gymnasts earning All-EAGLAcademic laurels, tied for the second-most in the league. The four members ofthe senior class combined to total 15 academic honors in their career.

After missing half of last season with an injury, top all-around competitor LauraSevarino returned to form in the season opener at New Hampshire. She placedthird on the balance beam, fifth on the bars and in the floor exercise, and sixth onthe vault. She teamed with Northcutt to pace the Scarlet Knights at the event.

However, the junior, who earned All-EAGL honors a year ago, was forced to missthe rest of the season after injuring her foot following the opening meet.

Northcutt took over as RU’s all-around competitor in the next three meets be-fore suffering an injury herself during warmups. Freshman Nicole Schwartzstepped in as the Scarlet Knights all-arounder, competing in all four events in thefinal six meets with a career-high mark of 38.025 against Bridgeport andAlaska-Anchorage.

That meet, which was broadcast live on RUTV, saw Rutgers post its highestscore in two years with a 192.050 to place second in the tri-meet against astrong Alaska-Anchorage squad. Sophomore Kiah Banfield’s 9.775 led a stellarperformance for RU in the floor exercise that included three scores of 9.700 orhigher. Sophomore Erica Gerlach and Behr led the way with second and third-

place finishes on the bars with season-high marks of 9.750 and 9.725, respec-tively. A season-high score of 48.325 on the beam gave RU a first-place finish inthe event.

After a fifth-place performance against a strong field at the Lyndsey Ferris Invita-tional in Washington, D.C., RU hosted Penn, William & Mary and George Wash-ington in the first meet at the Livingston Recreation Center of 2009. The ScarletKnights recorded a 189.050 to place second, led by Johnson’s 9.725 in thefloor exercise and Northcutt’s 38.200 in the all-around.

Johnson bested her score in the floor exercise one meet later at Temple with a9.750 to tie for second place in the event as Rutgers finished fourth againstTowson, Bridgeport and the host Owls.

In their third quad meet in a span of eight days, RU traveled to Morgantown, W.Va. to face West Virginia, George Washington and Maryland. For the third-

straight meet, Johnsonposted a career-high in thefloor exercise, this timerecording a 9.850 to finishin a tie for fourth place. Jun-ior Alyssa Lewandowski hada 9.600 and Behr regis-tered a 9.500 to lead RU inthe vault at the meet.

Rutgers opened the monthof February with its secondhome meet of the season.RU hosted Pittsburgh andYale, placing second with ascore of 189.575. In whatbecame routine, Johnsonposted a career-high in thefloor exercise with a 9.875to take top honors in theevent. ond. Schwartz competed in her first all-around with a 37.925.

Led by Behr’s first-place finish on the bars, Rutgers downed Cortland with a187.500 in the middle of February, followed by a fourth-place finish in a highly-competitive meet at Penn State.

The Scarlet Knights’ senior class was honored March 7 in the final home meetof the 2009 campaign that saw Johnson once again steal the show with a9.800 to take second in the floor exercise as Cornell edged RU in the meet.

Rutgers rounded out the regular-season with a fifth-place showing at Towsonwhere Lewandowski posted a 9.800 on the vault to place second overall andBanfield score a 9.650 to finish 11th. Gerlach’s 9.700 on the bars tied her forfourth overall.

The Scarlet Knights registered a 189.125, led by strong performances fromNorthcutt in the all-around (37.450) and Johnson in the floor exercise and onthe vault (9.750 in both) and Lewandowski (9.725) in the vault to place eighth inthe EAGL Championships in Raleigh, N.C.

Injuries to several of the Scarlet Knights’ key competitors limited RU in 2009,but youth stepped in and provided a solid outlook for the future of the program.

LIVINGSTON RECREATION CENTERRutgers Gymnastics entered a new home in 2001 with the completion of the training and competition areas at the Livingston

Recreation Center.

The training area is set up with two uneven bars, four beams, and a full-size floor for practice.

The gymnasium, which has served as a recreation facility for several years, has undergone an internal facelift to accommodate anew, 6,000 square-foot gymnastics practice facility with state-of-the-art training equipment. The Scarlet Knights have benefitedfrom newly-designed enhancements to its facility in 2008 which provided optimal training conditions for the program. A brand

new surface for the floor exercise and a newly-added in-ground tumbling pit has opened up the facility's layout and made it moreconducive for training. New bleachers were erected in the facility which presents a pleasant experience for fans on the day of ameet. The facility will debut a new scoreboard in 2010 which will allow fans to follow the action more closely. The new facility al-

lows the Scarlet Knights to train to their full potential, as well as helps attract some of the top gymnastics recruits in the country.

Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jer-sey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rut-gers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the Universityof North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington.

Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public re-search universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experi-ence for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems;diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the peopleof New Jersey.

President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate edu-cation at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expandedaccess to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty.

A BRIEF HISTORYRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate andgraduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and NewBrunswick.

Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 asQueen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in NewBrunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts in-stitution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, ColonelHenry Rutgers.

Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers ScientificSchool, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with thefounding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineer-ing) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precur-sors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the ErnestMario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in1918, and the School of Education in 1924.

In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number ofschools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women whenthe New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University Col-lege was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under theGI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designatedRutgers as The State University of New Jersey.

A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambi-tious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residentialexperience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the GraduateSchool–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; crimi-nal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as in-dustry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged.

In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organizationcomprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 180 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sci-ences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve lifeboth in New Jersey and around the world.

A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions andstrengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences.

With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than10,000 students each year, and has more than 350,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jerseycounties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century.Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university's goals for the future include the continuedprovision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.

34 GYMNAST ICS 2009 -10

In collegiate team competi-tion, six gymnasts perform ineach of four events (vault, un-even parallel bars, balancebeam, and floor exercise). Thefive best individual scores perevent comprise the cumulativeteam total.

Collegiate competition re-quires at least two judges toevaluate the score of an ath-lete’s performance. Thescores are averaged to arriveat a final mark. A perfect teamscore is 200, with top colle-giate scores ranging between190.00 and 197.00.

Optional routines, choreo-graphed by the gymnast to ex-

press herself through the skills she may perform best, are based on ascore of 9.6 with an additional four-tenths (.4) for completing moredifficult skills and/or combinations.

Judges use the following categories to evaluate optional routines:Value parts (difficulty) .................................... 3.00Special Requirements................................... 1.20Bonus Parts....................................................... 0.50Composition ...................................................... 0.60Execution ............................................................. 4.70-5.20Total....................................................................... 10.00

VAULTThe vaulting event requires speed, quickness and explosive power.

Vaults are divided into four categories: handsprings, forward saltos, backward saltos and vaults from a roundoff. Each of these vaults is as-signed a vault of up to 10.0. Deductions are taken from the startingvalue of the vault. Basis for deductions stems from technical errors inthe areas of preflight (approach to the horse), repulsion (the rise ofthe horse), and the afterflight (distance and height from the horse).

In 2001, the rules were modified so that each gymnast would bepermitted to perform one vault for scoring purposes. This is achange from previous seasons, where gymnastics could perform twoof the same or two different vaults, and were awarded the higher ofthe two scores.

Due to safety concerns, in 2003 the design of the vault horsewas been changed. It now has a larger top, allowing thegymnastmore room to place her hands on the horse. It is referred to asthe “tongue”, since that is what the new shape resembles.

UNEVEN BARSA complete routine on the un-

even bars comprises some 10 to15 moves, consisting mainly ofswinging and suspension skills utiliz-ing both bars with many regrasps.A change of direction is required inthe routine, while pauses for con-centration, extra swings and un-characteristic elements are to beavoided. The gymnast must changebars at least two times, and musthave at least two flight elements. As mentioned above under scoring, bonus parts worth up to 0.40 canbe awarded for completing difficultskills. On this event, some of thebonus moves include somersaultingrelease moves, difficult pirouettework, and somersaulting mounts.

BALANCE BEAMThe routine must be composed of elements from the following

groups: tumbling with and without flight; strength; and dance (i.e. turns, leaps, and body waves). Special requirements on the balance beamare a tumbling series, a leap or a large jump, a full turn and a series ofskills combining dance and acrobatics. The routine must last between1:10 and 1:30. Performing on the beam requires precise movementand intense concentration, as each ‘wobble’ results in a deduction. Ele-ments performed on the beam that receive bonus points are somer-saulting mounts, double-back dismounts, double turns, one-armhandstands, and jumps showing maximum flexibility.

FLOOR EXERCISEFloor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics

performed to music. Creative and dynamic changes in rhythm and en-ergy levels help to create anexciting routine where com-position plays an importantrole. The exercise must lastbetween 1:10 and 1:30. Aroutine consists of threetumbling “passes” and thegymnast must balance thedifficulty of both her tumblingskills and dance skills andshould finish the routine asstrongly as it was started.Bonus points are awarded onthis event for more than twotwists in the same somer-sault, a double-back pre-ceded by a front orbacksomersault, a triple turn, and certain unique dance ele-ments. Specific deductionsare taken for stepping off themat and for being out of syncwith the music.
