Season Preview

When the conference season begins on Sept. 10 against Cal Poly Pomona, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team will look to defend their six consecutive CCAA North Division titles. How-ever, despite an oustanding 2009 campaign, it would be untrue to say the season hasn’t left something of a bitter taste in the mouths of the Seawolves.

It was a great start to 2009 as the Seawolves started 10-0-2 through their first 12 matches. The squad headed into homecoming weekend with a pair of huge matches against two very tough opponents – defending national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 1 ranked Cal State L.A.. Ranked No. 7 in the country themselves, Sonoma State was eager to go to battle with the Golden Eagles in the No. 1 versus No. 7 homecoming game on Sunday.

Enter the Toros on Friday. Despite what was at that point a down year for the perennial powers, CSUDH came away with three points after a 2-0 win over Sonoma.

“You have to give (CSUDH) credit,” said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “They came out and worked their butts off. This is the first time all season that we have been outworked.”

Still smarting from the loss to the Toros, two days later Sonoma State bounced right back and defeated top-ranked Cal State L.A. in their most highly anticipated matchup of the season. For the rest of the regular season, the Ziemer-led team hit some bumps along the road and finished 2-2-2 in the final six matches, including two ties against Humboldt State to end the season.

A win to open up the CCAA Championship Tournament propelled the Seawolves into the championship for a rematch with their nemesis, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. The southern California team again defeated Sonoma State, this time 3-2 on a penalty kick in double overtime. Particularly frustrating was the fact that the Seawolves were just over three minutes away from winning the title in regulation play before a late Toro goal tied it up and sent the game to overtime.

The NCAA tournament draw didn’t exactly shape up as the Seawolves would have hoped either, pairing SSU with the same CSUDH squad that beat the Seawolves twice earlier this season. And again, the same bitter-tasting result – a 3-0 loss, eliminating Sonoma State from national title contention. Finishing with a 14-5-4 overall record in 2009, three of the five Seawolf losses came at the hands of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

With last season in the rear view mirror, Ziemer will return six starters and welcome in a talented group of freshmen and transfers to continue the winning Sonoma State tradi-tion and work towards capturing the program’s first national title since 2002. It will take 18 matches to decide their postseason fate, including two non-conference friendlies against Fresno Pacific (Sept. 4) and Dominican (Sept. 7) at the top of the schedule. Then it’s on to the CCAA and business as usual.

Eight of the Seawolves’ first 10 conference matches will be played within the friendly confines of Seawolf Soccer Field, but Sonoma State will end the regular season with five of its last six on the road, including another highly anticipated matchup with Cal State Dominguez Hills. On Oct. 17, the Seawolves will square off with the Toros at 2 p.m. in Carson looking for their first victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills since a 2-0 victory on Oct. 5, 2007.

The annual Humboldt State rivalry fires up when the Seawolves travel to Humboldt State on Oct. 22. The series will then change scenery, as the two teams will play two days later on Oct. 24 in Rohnert Park. It will be “Senior Day” as Sonoma State will wrap up its 2010 regular schedule the following weekend at San Francisco State (Oct. 29) and at Cal State Monterey Bay (Oct. 31).

All-West Region selections Ryan Hall and Trevor Hurst will return for the Seawolves, as well as several other key role players in Ebby Lombardi, David Holleran and Jomed Tejan.

While an impressive group of experienced players return, the Seawolves will be without the services of last year’s leading scorer, Taylor Jones, and 2009 All-West Region pick Cory Taufer. Both are out for the year following injuries.

It will be an unfamiliar face in the box this season, though, as Brook Johnson, the reign-ing SSU Male Athlete of the Year completed his eligibility and graduated from the uni-versity last spring. Three student-athletes will be competing for the starting job – Ryan Smitchger, Andrew Ball and Juan Sosa. Smitchger and Ball served as Johnson’s backup last season and Sosa, who is making a return to the team after taking a year off, also played behind Johnson in 2008.

Starting with a non-conference matchup with Fresno Pacific on Sept. 4, Ziemer and company will look to getting back to the conference championships for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons and a NCAA appearance for the fourth consecutive year.

CCAA PREVIEW

Seawolves Are Coaches' Pick To Win CCAAWALNUT CREEK, Calif- After a preseason vote of coaches in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the nationally-ranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team has been selected to win the North Division for the seventh consecutive season. The coaches also recognized the Seawolves as the favorites to claim the 2010 CCAA Cham-pionship Tournament title that will be held at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock on Nov. 5-7.

“Although it is an honor to be picked by the coaches to win the CCAA, we know that we have a lot of work to do,” head coach Marcus Ziemer said, who will begin his 20th-year at the helm for SSU. “The North Division is going to be much improved, so just winning the North will be a big challenge, let alone the CCAA.”

Sonoma State, who fell in the CCAA title game one season ago, received 65 points 10 first-place votes to repeat as the North Division champion and six votes to claim the conference title.

For the second consecutive year, the CCAA Championship Tournament will be played at Warrior Field in Turlock, on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus. This year’s event will be held on November 5th and 7th.

The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State Univer-sity.

A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 19 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA Tournament appear-ances and a NCAA West Region Championship in 2007.

The 2009 season was another banner campaign for Sonoma State soccer. Ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation, the Seawolves started out the season with ten wins and two ties in their first 12 outings. However, late in the season, the Seawolves were edged in double overtime for the conference crown, then oustered in the first round of the NCAA West Regional by rival Cal State Dominguez Hills. These losses have the Seawolves thirsty for revenge.

Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship.

Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Confer-ence Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play.

In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Ziemer lives in Glen Ellen with his wife Trish (Gretton), a member of SSU’s 1990 women’s soccer national championship team. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor, and Tera.

Former Cardinal Newman High and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell returns for his fourth sea-son on the Sonoma State coaching staff in 2009. Percell came to the Seawolves from Seattle Univer-sity, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team.

Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valu-able Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach.

In addition to his coaching experience with the Sounders, Percell spent three seasons as an assistant with the Seattle University women’s team, helping lead the Redhawks to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in 2004. Prior to that, he was an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams at Santa Clara University, winning a national championship with the women’s side in 2001. Along with his current coaching duties at Sonoma State, Percell also guides the Santa Rosa United Celtic, an Under 17 team.

Percell is still active on the field as he was an instrumental part of the Sonoma County Sol’s 2009 NPSL national championship squad. He loves to follow the Seattle Sounders, the best team in the MLS.

Benjamin Ziemer, head coach Marcus’ younger brother, returns for his fifth season on the Seawolf staff.

Ziemer attended Sonoma State in 1990 and 1991 and ranks sixth in school history with 21 assists. During his first season, he had 12 assists and in his senior campaign, he scored six goals and assisted on nine others for the NCAA Division II runner-up Cossacks.

Ziemer is also the head coach at Sonoma Academy and the head coach of the 2009 national cham-pion Sonoma County Sol.

The CALIFORNIACOLLEGIATEATHLETICASSOCIATION(CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its estab-lishment in December 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports in-clude men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball com-prise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Champion-ships (101 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

CCAA teams have had great success in women’s soccer. Just last season, Cal State Dominguez Hills, the CCAA Championship runner-up, was also the NCAA Division II runner-up after a strong run through the post-season.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institu-tions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

Bill FuscoDirector of Athletics

Bill Fusco is now in his 14th year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Sonoma State University. Under his leadership, SSU intercollegiate teams have become a competitive force since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1998. SSU teams have performed well at the regional and national level during his tenure.
