STEVE CUNNINGHAMEHEAD COACH

Steve.Cunninghame.returns.for.his.16th.season.as.coach.of .the.Sonoma.State.men’s.tennis.team..Last.year’s.team.finished.7-10.after.going.up.against.some.of .the.top.competition.in.Division.I.and.Division.II.tennis...They.also.qualified.for.the.NCAA.West.Regionals.for.the.second.straight.year.and.fourth.time.since.the.program.was.resurrected.in.1998.

A.player.for.the.Cossack.tennis.team.in.1979.and.again.from.1981-83,.Cunninghame.served.as.an.assistant.coach.to.Jay.Potter.from.1984-87,.focusing.his.coaching.skills.on.the.men’s.team.

In.1988,.he.was.named.the.head.coach.of .the.women’s.team.and.took.over.the.head.coaching.duties.for.both.teams.the.following.year..As.head.coach.of .the.SSU.women’s.squad,.Cunning-hame.compiled.a.70-42.record,.coached.the.Cossacks’.first.tennis.All-American,.and.led.five.nationally.ranked.teams,.including.the.1989-90.team.that.finished.ninth.in.the.nation.

In.men’s.tennis,.Cunninghame.compiled.a.record.of .36-64.before.the.sport,.along.with.five.oth-ers,.was.dropped.at.the.end.of .the.1991-92.school.year.due.to.budget.constraints..The.team.was.resurrected.in.1997-98,.and.Cunninghame.also.returned.to.lead.the.team.to.a.11-9.mark.in.their.first.season.back.in.NCAA.competition.

JOAQUIN LOPEZASSISTANT COACH

Joaquin.Lopez.enters.his.fifth.year.with.the.Sonoma.State.men’s.tennis.team.in.2007..A.gradu-ate.of .the.University.of .Arkansas,.Lopez.was.named.the.university’s.top.student-athlete.as.a.senior..He.then.played.four.years.of .professional.tennis,.defeating.several.Top.100.ATP.players.

In.1996,.Lopez.received.his.Master’s.Degree.in.Sport.Psychology.in.Spain..He.has.coached.top.juniors.in.Germany.and.has.worked.as.a.tennis.psychologist.with.professional.players.in.Spain..Lopez.graduated.in.May.2000.from.the.Institute.of .Transpersonal.Psychology.with.a.Master’s.in.Counseling.Psychology.

Currently,.Joaquin.has.a.psychotherapy.and.sports.psychology.private.practice...He.also.teaches.Transformational.Tennis.at.La.Cantera.Tennis.Club...He.resides.in.Forestville.with.his.wife.Aimee.and.two.children,.Ian.and.Vida.

BILL FUSCODIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSBill.Fusco.is.now.in.his.13th.year.as.the.Director.of .Athletics.at.Sonoma.State.University..Under.his.leadership,.SSU.intercollegiate.teams.have.become.a.competitive.force.since.joining.the.California.Collegiate.Athletic.Association.(CCAA).in.1998..SSU.teams.have.performed.well.at.the.regional.and.national.level.during.his.tenure.

Fusco.has.overseen.an.unprecedented.number.of .changes.in.the.SSU.intercollegiate.athletic.program,.since.his.arrival.in.1997..SSU.Athletics.has.successfully.moved.into.the.California.Collegiate.Athletic.Association.(CCAA),.initiated.the.awarding.of .athletic.scholarships,.transitioned.to.a.new.mascot,.established.media.partnerships.and.has.expanded.fund.raising.through.special.events.like.Bidnight.Madness,.the.annual.car.drawing.and.the.Annual.Fund.Drive.of .the.University.Athletic.Association.

Fusco.has.served.as.President.of .the.CCAA.(2004-05).and.is.the.Past.President.of .the.NCAA.Division.II.Athletics.Directors.Association..He.also.served.for.four.years.(1999-2003).on.the.Executive.Committee.of .the.National.Association.of .Collegiate.Directors.of .Athletics.(NACDA)..Fusco.also.served.on.the.NCAA.Division.II.Degree.Completion.Scholarship.Committee.and.the.NCAA.West.Region.Women’s.Tennis.Committee..He.recently.completed.a.term.on.the.California.State.University.Risk.Management.Authority.Athletic.Injury.Medical.Expense.Board..Fusco.was.recently.appointed.to.a.four-year.term.on.the.NCAA.Championships.Committee.

As.President.of .the.NCAA.Division.II.Athletics.Directors.Association.he.helped.develop.the.Division.II.Model.Athletics.Department,.a.program.that.establishes.the.guiding.principles.of .operating.a.Division.II.intercollegiate.athletic.program.

With.over.27.years.of .combined.athletic.administrative.experience,.Fusco.has.served.as.Director.of .Athletics.at.the.University.of .San.Francisco.and.Dominican.University.of .California.and.as.Sports.Information.Director.at.St..Mary’s.College.in.Moraga.and.the.University.of .San.Francisco..He.is.an.adjunct.faculty.member.in.the.USF.Graduate.Sports.Management.Program.where.has.taught.an.elective.class.titled.Administrative.Leadership.in.Intercollegiate.Athletics..He.is.also.an.adjunct.faculty.member.at.Dominican.University.and.has.taught.a.class.titled.Introduction.to.Sports.Management.
