WSchedule HighlightsThe Western Illinois volleyball schedule features seven nonconference matches against in-state opponents in addition to a full Summit League slate.

Once play concludes at the season-opening tournament at Bradley, the Leathernecks host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Aug. 31 for the team’s home opener at Western Hall. Next, the Leathernecks hit the road for a tournament at Troy, Sept. 4-5, in Troy, Ala.

Western concludes the road swing with Summit League-opening matches at Centenary Sept. 10 and Oral Roberts Sept. 11.

“For the second year in a row, Summit League play will start earlier than any other conference in the country as conference play starts on the third weekend of the season,” ninth year head coach Kym McKay said. “With this type of timing, we need to play as much volleyball as possible in September.”

The Fighting Leathernecks will play 30 matches with 12 matches scheduled against nonconference opponents from seven different conferences. The Leathernecks will play 17 matches on the road with nine home conference matches scheduled at Brophy Hall and four home nonconference matches scheduled at Western Hall.

The ReturnersLosing only one starter from last season to graduation, the Leathernecks return five and the libero for the 2010 season.

“This season we want to play more consistent, execute when the pressure is on and increase

our competitive toughness,” McKay said. “We dropped some matches where we were up 2-1 last season and not being able to finish when we’re in a position to win is a sign of a young team. The girls have worked really hard on understanding the importance of competitive maturity.”

Lone senior Ellen Miller (pictured left) took on Western’s starting setter role in the 2009 season as she led the Summit League and recorded the fourth-highest single season assists in program history with 1,134.

Junior Cait Egan returns in the middle as the Leathernecks’ kill leader. Egan accounted for roughly 25 percent of Western’s kills as she tallied 351 for a .268 attack percentage last season. Egan also returns a majority of Western’s blocking game as she recorded 86 total blocks. Beside Egan, sophomore Katie Hosteng assisted with 58 blocks for 66 total last season.

Others who proved aggressive at the net with at least 100 kills last season were Hosteng, Allison Gilbert, Krissy Bergquist, Megan Toczek and Brooke Stittleburg.

The NewcomersFour freshman have been added depth to the 2010 roster in Alaina DiGiorgio-Verdin, Jessie Lantz, Meghan Ross and Heather Smith. DiGiorgio-Verdin will follow the lead of Egan and Hosteng in the middle. Lantz and Ross will compete for time at the defensive specialist role, while Smith will learn from the examples of Miller and Holum at setter.

As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues.

Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing field and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees.

During the 2009-10 campaign North Dakota State’s volleyball team set a new mark with its 37th consecutive League win en route to its second straight undefeated season. Southern Utah joined the league in volleyball for the 2009 season, expanding the competition to 10 teams.

Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades.

Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic

and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions.

The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland

University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University.

In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and

diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011.

These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their

student-athletes.

The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports.

Throughout the year, the Leathernecks recorded wins over teams from the Big East (DePaul), Missouri Valley (Bradley), Horizon League (Illinois-Chicago) and Ohio Valley (SIU-Edwardsville) Conferences and came back from a 0-2 deficit for a thrilling 3-2 win over eventual Summit League Tournament champion IPFW on the road.

McKay in the Record BookNot only did McKay become the longest-tenured coach in program history in 2009, but the Leathernecks’ five-set win over Bradley Sept. 15 helped her pick up her 81st coaching win to move past Connie Truelove (1976-81) for the second-most in Western’s volleyball history. McKay currently has 88 wins, sitting behind only legendary Western coach Juli Kartel who led the program to 112 wins from 1986-92.

Players Changing the BooksIn addition to McKay, several Leatherneck volleyball players made moves in the Western Illinois record book during the 2009 season. Senior defensive specialist Elise Crnjak recorded 288 digs throughout the 2009 season to finish her career with 1,548 digs, which ranks as the third-highest career digs total in team history. Crnjak also ranks sixth in school history with a career average of 3.87 digs per set.

Senior Erin Frick also finished her career in record fashion as the middle hitter posted 11 total blocks (2 block solos, 9 block assists) in 2009 to move into a tie for fourth in school history in career block assists with 281 and a tie for fifth in career total blocks with 317.

Western players Cait Egan and Ellen Miller also made it into the school annals for their record-setting single-season efforts. Egan recorded a team-leading 351 kills in 2009 to take over the ninth spot on the Western Illinois single-season kills chart. The sophomore also had 935 attack attempts throughout the season, which is the 10th-most in program history.

Egan also entered the Western Illinois record books after recording 11 blocks (all block assists) against Bradley. The mark ranked as the second-most block assists in a match in school history and tied for the fourth-highest mark in total blocks. Egan led the team with 86 total blocks on 19 block solos and 67 block assists for the season.

Miller’s Breakout Season at SetterIn her first year as the team’s full-time setter, Miller recorded 1,134 assists to take over the No. 4 spot in Western’s single-season assists chart. Miller led the Summit League in total assists and ranked fourth in the conference with an average of 9.49 assists per set. Her season-high 55 assists against Southern Illinois-Carbondale ranked as the most by a Summit League player in a four-set match in 2009.

Miller’s breakout season not only included record-setting offensive numbers, but she also led the defense with 377 digs for an average of 3.19 digs per set. Her 31 digs against UMKC were not only the most by any Western player in a match this season, but also ranked as the second-most digs by a Summit League player in a four-set match in 2009. Her efforts against the Kangaroos earned Miller the Summit League defensive player of the week honor Sept. 21. Miller recorded a double-double (assists-digs) in 21 out of Western’s 31 matches and ended the season on a streak of 11-consecutive matches with double-doubles.

100-Kill ClubWhile Egan was the primary beneficiary of Miller’s sets throughout the year, Western also had five other players record at least 100 kills throughout the season. Allison Gilbert was second on the team with 253 kills (2.39/set), Katie Hosteng had 198 kills (1.89/set), Krissy Bergquist had 189 kills (1.93/set), Megan Toczek had 136 kills (2.03/set) and Brooke Stittleburg had 134 kills (1.54/set).

Leathernecks Dig ItFreshman Bridget Murphy ranked second on the team with 366 digs for an average of 3.10 digs per set. Murphy split libero duties throughout the season with Crnjak and senior Lindsay Muehlbauer. Muehlbauer recorded 311 digs for the season for an average of 2.66 digs per set. Stittleburg came on strong for the Leatherneck defense late in the season to finish with the team’s best digs average at 3.49 digs per set (304 total digs).

Academic SuccessThe Leatherneck volleyball team also continued a tradition of excellence in the classroom as senior Emily Harrison earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine academic all-District V second team honors for the second consecutive season.

As a team, the squad turned in the highest grade point average of any Western Illinois athletic team in the spring as it posted a 3.71 GPA. It helped the entire department achieve its highest overall GPA of 3.19 in athletics history.

Her 31 digs against UMKC were not only the most by any Western player in a match this season, but also ranked as the second-most digs by a Summit League player in a four-set match in 2009. Her efforts against the Kangaroos earned Miller the Summit League defensive player of the week honor Sept. 21. Miller recorded a double-double (assists-digs) in 21 out of Western’s 31 matches and ended the season on a streak of 11-consecutive matches with double-doubles.

100-Kill ClubWhile Egan was the primary beneficiary of Miller’s sets throughout the year, Western also had five other players record at least 100 kills throughout the season. Allison Gilbert was second on the team with 253 kills (2.39/set), Katie Hosteng had 198 kills (1.89/set), Krissy Bergquist had 189 kills (1.93/set), Megan Toczek had 136 kills (2.03/set) and Brooke Stittleburg had 134 kills (1.54/set).

Leathernecks Dig ItFreshman Bridget Murphy ranked second on the team with 366 digs for an average of 3.10 digs per set. Murphy split libero duties throughout the season with Crnjak and senior Lindsay Muehlbauer. Muehlbauer recorded 311 digs for the season for an average of 2.66 digs per set. Stittleburg came on strong for the Leatherneck defense late in the season to finish with the team’s best digs average at 3.49 digs per set (304 total digs).

Academic SuccessThe Leatherneck volleyball team also continued a tradition of excellence in the classroom as senior Emily Harrison earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine academic all-District V second team honors for the second consecutive season.

As a team, the squad turned in the highest grade point average of any Western Illinois athletic team in the spring as it posted a 3.71 GPA. It helped the entire department achieve its highest overall GPA of 3.19 in athletics history.Gilbert Hosteng

• Western Illinois University student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom, recording a spring 2010 semester GPA of 3.19, the third-straight semester posting at least a 3.0 and the highest semester cumulative GPA in Athletics Department history. • In addition to increasing the overall GPA from the previous all-time high of 3.15 GPA set in fall 2009, the Leathernecks also increased the number of perfect 4.0 averages from 53 in the fall to 64 (16.45 percent of student-athlete body) in the spring.• Posting a GPA of 3.6 or better, 109 student athletes earned Semester Honors and 229, or more than half (58.87 percent of student-athlete body) of the student-athletes, earned a 3.0 or better. Since Al Goldfarb, Western Illinois University’s 10th president, officially took office July 1, 2002, the University has outlined goals and values within the framework of a strategic plan, expanded the University’s operations in the Quad Cities through a gift from Deere and Company of facilities and land which will become a riverfront campus, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2012, and designated the southwest section of the Macomb campus as a fine arts quadrant and location for a new Performing Arts Center.

Under his leadership the University has expanded its Cost Guarantee program to include graduate degree students, making Western the only public university in the state which guarantees tuition, fees, and room and board at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Goldfarb oversees the University’s current comprehensive campaign, “Set the Standard: Higher Values in Higher Education,” which to date, has raised just over $30 million of the campaign’s $60 million goal. University fundraising efforts resulted in $8.2 million in Fiscal Year 2009, the highest annual total on record.

W. Garry Johnson was named vice president for student services in 1998. In this capacity, Johnson provides administrative leadership for the educational and service activities and programs provided by 26 different areas of campus, to include athletics.

Johnson has 38 years of professional experience in higher educaiton including administrative positions at Southern Colorado State (1969-70), University of Missouri-Columbia (1970-80) and WIU (1980-present).

He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and history from Southern Colorado State College in 1970, his master’s degree in counseling and personnel services at Missouri-Columbia in 1972, and his doctorate in counseling psychology from Missouri-Columbia in 1982.

The competitive nature and success of most athletics programs is measured and evaluated on a daily basis, primarily on the scoreboards, newscasts, and newspapers. Often times the basis of a sport program’s competitiveness and ultimate success extends behind the headlines deep into the support offered by its administration.

In nine years at Western Illinois, Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine has instilled a commitment to developing a broad-based gender-

neutral, yet competitive NCAA Division I athletics program.

Western has won 23 conference championships under Van Alstine, winning three Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner’s Cups, 2003, 2004, 2005 and finishing second the following three years.

Twenty Western Illinois teams have advanced to NCAA postseason competition and 58 student-athletes have competed as individuals representing Western at the NCAA’s. Further, since 2001, Western coaches have earned 26 “Coach of the Year” accolades.

Football attendance during the 2003 season reached a total of 77,426 - the highest attendance figure in school history - and an average of 12,904 fans per game - the second highest mark in the program’s 108 years. Each of the average football attendances during Van Alstine’s first three years rank among the top 15 marks.

Van Alstine has increased the academic expectations as well. For the first time in program history, Western Illinois student athletes exceeded the 3.0 grade point average in consecutive semesters (spring 2009 and fall 2009) with a then-all-time high 3.15 GPA after the 2009 fall semester. In spring 2010 athletics had its third-straight semester with at least a 3.0 GPA as the student-athletes achieved an unprecedented 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes have had a steady 76 percent graduation success rate (1999-2002 cohort).

The national and regional yardstick by which a program’s support base is measured is in its facilities. The coaches and staff at Western Illinois are vigilant in monitoring the successes, failures, resources, and facilities of their peers and rival institutions. These comparisons are provident because in intercollegiate athletics, just as with other components of the University, most often there is a direct relationship between the facilities and resources and the competitive success of the program. In July 2008, the Leatherneck Volleyball program unveiled Sport Court flooring, the NCAA official volleyball playing surface. Western is the only school in The Summit League to host all conference matches on the surface.

• Western Illinois Athletics began participating in NCAA Division I Volleyball in 1976. In July 1977 a county-wide nickname contest was held to establish an identity for Western’s female student-athletes. From more than 100 entries, women athletes and coaches voted for the nickname “Westerwinds,” helping fuel an increasingly popular national climate of women’s intercollegiate athletics.• The 1992 team stands as the only Western Illinois Volleyball squad to appear in the conference championship match. Western competed to the semifinals in 1998 and the again in 2004. The squad in 2004 ended the team’s six-year absence from the tournament, sparking four consecutive seasons in attendance (2004-07).• After the turn of the century, with the number of sports offered for men and women being equal, attention turned to creating a gender neutral athletics environment. Significant improvements have been made in recent years to marketing and publicity efforts, salaries, facilities and other resources. In 2009, the men and women again began using a unified nickname, “The

Fighting Leathernecks.”

Women’s Athletics at Western Illinois• Colonel Rock III made his Leatherneck debut on May 15, 2010, ending a 37-year hiatus of a live bulldog mascot at Western Illinois. The English bulldog is the traditional mascot of the U.S. Marine Corps.• A costumed version of Rocky was developed in 1973. He has received three “groomings” since his first appearance, the most recent on Feb. 15, 1997. Rocky was immortalized in the form of a 900-pound cement statue in 1971, which now sits at the entrance of Hanson Field.

• Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. • The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname.• Hanson coached Leatherneck football for 16 years (1926-41) and was Western’s all-time winningest coach until 1998. In 1950, Western’s football stadium, Hanson Field, was dedicated in his honor. Rock retired in 1964 after serving at Western Illinois for 38 years. He passed away in 1982, at the age of 86.
