Board Chair’s Message

Last year, the Army Heritage Center Foundation was able to report the completion of construction of the first phase of the Visitor and Education Center (VEC) and the building’s transfer to the U.S. Army. For the Foundation, 2011 was a transition year as we worked to facilitate the opening of this new facility, sustain existing programs, and staged ourselves for a new effort to build the second phase of the Visitor and Education Center.

The Visitor and Education Center was opened to the public on May

20, 2011, to great acclaim from all who attended. As a component of the Army Heritage Days program – a timeline living history event of U.S. Army history from the mid-eighteenth century to today, the facility’s grand opening included the launch of the main gallery, an exhibit entitled “A Great Civil War: 1861, the Union Dissolved,” and the photograph exhibit entitled, “Understanding War Through Imagery: The Civil War in American Memory.” The weekend was memorable to all who attended and marked a great beginning for this facility that will tell the Soldier’s and the Army’s story to the public.

The Foundation funded the opening of USAHEC’s museum store and provided significant support in outfitting the café. The Foundation-operated museum store will provide appropriate military pride, historical products that support U.S. Army history and heritage, and merchandise that allows our guests to remember their visit to the Center. The café, a partnership with the Carlisle Barracks Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program, supported the more than 127,000 visitors, who toured the USAHEC campus in 2011, as well as the special programs,

veterans’ reunions, and other educational activities. Each of these efforts demonstrates the value of the public-private partnership that is developing USAHEC. The Foundation’s educational programs also continued to expand. The Foundation began a program that matched veterans with student teams to document their history and record their memories. Projects were produced to standards established by USAHEC and were incorporated into the Veterans Surveys collection of the archives, a win-win for the students and participating veterans. Our schools to career program sustained the staff’s efforts to expand the Soldiers’ stories on the Foundation’s website – a resource for teachers and students. In April, the Education Department again promoted the academic study of military history with its annual award to Temple University’s Barnes Club, and in May, the Foundation hosted National History Day in PA, supporting more than 800 students in grades 5 to 12 who had demonstrated excellence at the local and regional competitions. Our efforts seek to promote a better appreciation of our Nation’s history.

2011 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

ARMY HERITAGE CENTER FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIP

Be proud of your accomplishments! Our members’ and supporters’ involvement made 2011 another successful and memorable year for the Foundation and the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. Owing most prominently to your unwavering support and generosity, the Foundation’s development program witnessed continued growth in 2011, especially in the area of Foundation membership. Your help was critical as the Foundation sought to improve the Center’s public outreach and educational services. We truly appreciate your financial assistance and commitment to honoring American Soldiers with a world-class facility devoted to preserving and telling their stories. In 2011, the Foundation saw significant growth in the size of its membership, thanks in large part to our continued partnership with Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Recruit membership exceeded 2,000 for the first time in program history. Additionally, the Foundation increased its overall membership by 38%, while retaining 56% of its existing members. A complete membership roster for 2011, less Recruit members, is appended to this report. A highlight among the Foundation’s annual activities was its Membership Dinner and Silent Auction. Over 350 attendees celebrated the selfless service of retired Army Rangers James A. Herbert and Robert W. Black. Guests were treated to an appearance by Mr. H. Ross Perot who received the Foundation’s Boots on the Ground Award for his selfless service to Soldiers and their Families. The U.S. Army Brass Quintet provided the evening’s entertainment and ended their performance with a rendition of Yellow Rose of Texas to honor Mr. Perot. In conjunction with the Fourth Annual Membership Dinner, the Foundation announced its newest undertaking — a $10 million capital campaign to complete Phase Two of the Visitor and Education Center. Fundraising for the Build on Success campaign commenced in November, with contributions exceeding $10,000 before the close of CY2011. Another notable fundraising effort for the Foundation in 2011 was the Soldiers Walk commemorative brick and paver program. More than just a fitting tribute to American service members, all proceeds help to enhance the facility. Sales spiked 51% from the previous year and generated over $20,000 toward VEC Phase Two construction.

Donations in-kind surpassed $260,000 last year, including innumerable book donations and Booz Allen Hamilton’s pro bono work creating and disseminating public service announcements promoting USAHEC. The Foundation also successfully managed the acquisition and transferal of two large private library collections valued at more than $70,000 into USAHEC’s archives. In 2011, the Foundation raised over $315,000 from membership dues, campaign contributions, pledge payments, and brick/paver sales thanks to our more than 350 individual donors, corporate affiliates, foundations, and Veteran associations. None of this was possible without ardent and loyal supporters like you. As a gesture of our appreciation, we have publicly recognized each donor within this report.

2011 was a year of positive growth and change for the Foundation’s Education Department. Achievements for the year included another successful year of managing the statewide National History Day in Pennsylvania program. Over 1,200 people attended the state contest at Millersville University in May. Seventy-two students advanced to the national contest, where high school freshman Gabriel Schroeder from Natrona Heights, PA, took first place in the Senior Paper category.

Through a grant from the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources, the Foundation hosted a series of professional development workshops for teachers. Teachers received an introduction to the resources at USAHEC, learned the basics of finding primary sources online, and gained an understanding of how to incorporate these resources into the classroom through National History Day in Pennsylvania.

Students working in the Foundation’s internship program continued to provide outstanding research support for our online educational materials while gaining valuable experience and honing their academic and career skills. The Foundation hosted seven college and five high school interns during the year.

2011 saw the addition of new Soldier Stories in the education section of our website, including: BG Anna Mae Hays (America’s first female general and World War II and Korean War Veteran), CPL Abial Edwards (Civil War), Nurses Jane and Bell Robison (Civil War), SSG Richard Turner (Korea), COL Robert Black (Korea and

Vietnam), BG James Herbert (Korea), MG Adolphus Greely (Artic Exploration and San Francisco Earthquake), and CPT Samuel Shute (Revolutionary War). These materials include first-hand accounts of service from the Soldiers, supporting articles about the events and places the Soldiers experienced, information about Soldiers’ equipment, and four highly-popular photo galleries: World War I, Korea, the 8th Ranger Company (Airborne), and Vietnam.

The Voices of the Past Speak to the Future Veteran’s Oral History Program grew to include two new schools: Central Bucks High School West and Central Bucks High School East. These students joined the students of Cumberland Valley High School, who began the program in 2010. Students from all three schools attended training sessions at USAHEC, where they took classes in a World War II classroom, interacted with Veterans and re-enactors, and ate a meal of MRE’s served in a World War II mess hall.

Additional support to USAHEC included Act 48 Professional Development Credits for Pennsylvania teachers who attended USAHEC events such as the Perspectives in Military History lectures, Brooks E. Kleber Memorial Readings, and living history events.

Mr. Laurence Burke, a graduate student at Carnegie-Mellon, was the 2011 Ruth Fellow. Mr. Burke spent three weeks in the archives researching the early development of military aviation. The Ruth Fellowship honors the service of Robert L. and Robert C. Ruth and is funded through contributions from AHCF Board Member Mr. Chris Gleason.

The Foundation presented the Russell F. Weigley Award to Mr. Alec Lalonde from the Royal Military College of Canada for his paper “Why ‘Europe First’?: The Economic and Ideological Underpinnings of America’s Europe-First Strategy, 1940-1941” at the 2011 Barnes Club Conference at Temple University. Mr. Ryan Johnson, from Temple University, received an honorable mention for the paper “Silent Casualty: Chemical Warfare and the Environment on the Western Front.”
